A compact travel router can connect to a hotel’s existing Wi-Fi in repeater mode and rebroadcast it as a private local network for your devices. The clearest documented option in this comparison is the GL.iNet Beryl AX (GL-MT3000), which has published size, weight, port and power specifications and a documented repeater setup. It is not an independently tested hotel-speed winner: sign-in portals, device limits and hotel network rules can affect whether any router works.
What a travel router can do in a hotel
In repeater mode, a travel router joins an existing Wi-Fi network and creates a local wireless network for your phone, laptop and other devices. GL.iNet documents this setup for the Beryl AX in its repeater setup guide. That can be useful when you want to connect multiple devices through one router rather than configure each device separately.

It does not bypass a hotel’s access rules. You may still need to complete the property’s authentication flow, and device limits or network configuration can prevent or complicate the connection. GL.iNet’s instructions establish that repeater setup is available; they do not guarantee compatibility with every hotel login portal.

Choose Beryl AX when documented portability details matter
Beryl AX is the stronger-documented pick here for travelers who want a compact Wi-Fi 6 router with stated dimensions, weight, port speeds, power input and a published repeater procedure. Its listed radio rates describe manufacturer-published wireless link rates, not the speed you will receive from hotel internet or a result from an independent test.
Consider Slate AX if its ports and current availability fit your setup
The cited 2023 catalog lists Slate AX with one WAN and two LAN ports, compared with Beryl AX’s one WAN and one LAN port. The Slate AX rate figures are also from that dated catalog, and the cited material does not establish its dimensions, weight, port speeds or power input. Confirm current specifications and availability before treating those catalog figures as a purchase comparison.

How to connect a travel router to hotel Wi-Fi
- Check the hotel’s rules and connection method. Ask whether guests can use a personal router, whether the network requires a browser sign-in, and whether it limits connected devices.
- Power the router and open its setup interface. For Beryl AX, follow the repeater procedure in GL.iNet’s repeater guide to select the existing Wi-Fi network and configure the router’s local network.
- Complete the property’s authentication flow if prompted. The hotel may require sign-in through a browser or another process; successful repeater setup alone does not guarantee that the portal will accept the router.
- Connect your devices to the travel router’s local Wi-Fi and check that they can reach the internet. If authentication fails or the network blocks the connection, contact hotel support or use an allowed alternative rather than trying to evade the property’s controls.
What to check before an international trip
The cited manufacturer material does not establish country-by-country hotel behavior or local wireless regulatory compatibility. Check current GL.iNet guidance for the specific model and destination, and verify the hotel’s network rules instead of assuming that a device that works at home will work at every property abroad.

Beryl AX’s listed power input is USB-C at 5V/3A. Bring a power source that meets that requirement, and check what is included in the regional package and whether its plug suits your destination. A short Ethernet cable can also be useful if your hotel room offers wired Ethernet, although the sources do not establish that any particular hotel will provide it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.VPN support is a capability, not a subscription
GL.iNet says Beryl AX comes with OpenVPN and WireGuard support and supports more than 30 VPN services on its product page. This describes router capability; it does not mean a paid VPN subscription is included, verify that every provider or setup will work, or guarantee security on every network. Check the VPN provider’s own terms and configuration requirements before relying on it.

How to choose a compact travel router
- Portability: Compare dimensions and weight, not just a “pocket-sized” description. Beryl AX has published measurements; the cited Slate AX sources do not state them.
- Wireless specifications: Treat band rates as published link-rate figures, not predictions of hotel internet speed. Actual service depends on the hotel connection and network conditions.
- Wired connections: Check the number and speed of WAN and LAN ports if you need Ethernet. Beryl AX lists one WAN port up to 2.5 Gbps and one LAN port up to 1 Gbps; the cited Slate AX catalog gives port count but not speeds.
- Power: Verify the model’s input requirement and what the regional package includes. Beryl AX specifies USB-C, 5V/3A.
- Hotel setup: Look for documented repeater instructions, then account for the property’s sign-in method and device policies. Documentation for a setup mode is not a guarantee of hotel compatibility.
