How many mAh do you need for hiking?
A 10,000 mAh bank is a practical starting tier for many day hikes where the main backup is a phone. Anker’s camping guide puts 10,000 mAh in the day-hike category and 20,000 mAh in a weekend category; that is manufacturer guidance, not a universal rule. The right size depends on your phone’s battery, trip duration, navigation and camera use, expected signal, any headlamp or GPS you need to charge, and whether you set off with a full phone battery. If your phone is already charged and you want only an emergency top-up, a smaller bank may be enough. For a long day, poor-signal route, multiple devices, or a phone used heavily for navigation and photos, consider more capacity—but weigh that against the extra load.

Why a 10,000 mAh bank does not mean a fixed number of phone charges
The advertised mAh figure describes nominal battery capacity, not the amount that will arrive at a phone. Voltage conversion and charging losses reduce usable output, and the result also varies with the phone and how it is used. Anker gives a rough estimate of about 1.5–2 full smartphone charges from a 10,000 mAh bank; treat that as a ballpark, not a promise for your handset or conditions.

Where available, compare rated energy in watt-hours (Wh) and manufacturer-rated output capacity at 5 V as well as nominal mAh. They provide useful context for comparing banks, but still do not guarantee a particular number of charges on a specific phone.
What to compare before buying
- Weight and size: Check the listed weight and dimensions, not just the capacity. A few extra grams may be worthwhile for more output or protection, but not if those features do not serve your route.
- USB-C input and output: Confirm that the bank can recharge through the connector you plan to use and that its output supports your device. Fast charging requires compatible charging modes on both the bank and device; a maximum wattage on the bank does not mean every phone will charge at that rate.
- Ports and cables: Count the connections you will actually need. An integrated cable can reduce what you pack, while USB-A can help with older accessories. Check whether the stated maximum output is shared when multiple devices are connected.
- Weather and impact protection: Read the exact model’s rating and what it does—and does not—claim. IP65, IPX8, IPX5, and IP67 are not interchangeable, and a weather rating is not a general promise that a bank is indestructible.
- Cold suitability: Separate manufacturer operating-temperature claims from independent test results. Cold can affect real-world battery behavior, and results for one model do not apply to all banks.

For a route where cold is a particular concern
NITECORE states that the SUMMIT 10000 operates at ambient temperatures down to −40°C. That is the manufacturer’s claim, not an independent verification of performance at that temperature. Separately, CleverHiker reports a 13% efficiency drop for the NB10000 Gen4 in its refrigerator test; its finding is limited to that model and the publisher’s test conditions.

Make the bank work for the whole outing
- Start with the phone fully charged and bring the cable the bank requires.
- Check that your headlamp or GPS can charge from the bank’s available ports and output.
- Keep the bank and cable accessible, and protect them from conditions beyond the exact model’s stated rating.
- For routes where navigation or emergency communication matters, plan around your devices’ expected use rather than assuming a capacity label guarantees a set number of charges.
