1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor the best all-round compact passive speaker, choose the Q Acoustics 3020i. It works on a shelf, on stands or with optional wall hardware, and its recessed terminals make a close-to-wall installation easier to keep tidy. Choose the ELAC Debut 2.0 B6.2 if deeper bass matters more than cabinet size, the KEF Q150 for a conventional compact bookshelf design, or the DALI OBERON ON-WALL when the least visually intrusive wall-mounted format is the priority.
All four are passive speakers: they contain no power amplifier. You need a separate amplifier, suitable speaker cable and a placement plan that leaves room for ports, connectors and vibration control. The right choice therefore depends on more than the front-panel dimensions.

At-a-glance comparison
| Model | Format and published information | Best fit | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Q Acoustics 3020i | Bookshelf speaker; 278 × 170 × 282 mm (H × W × D); 64 Hz–30 kHz frequency response; shelf, stand or optional wall-bracket mounting | Most flexible installation in a small room | Its depth still needs to fit the shelf, with clearance for the rear terminals and port |
| ELAC Debut 2.0 B6.2 | Bookshelf speaker; 37.4 × 19.5 × 26.8 cm (dimensions as listed by What Hi-Fi?); 6 ohms; 87 dB sensitivity; 44 Hz–35 kHz reported by What Hi-Fi? | More bass from a conventional cabinet | Largest cabinet in this group; confirm shelf or stand capacity |
| KEF Q150 | Compact passive bookshelf speaker; 86 dB sensitivity (2.83 V/1 m) in KEF’s current specification | Small, conventional bookshelf or stand placement | Check the cabinet depth and rear clearance before putting it close to a wall |
| DALI OBERON ON-WALL | Slim wall-mounted design with a down-firing bass-port system | Discreet installation with no speaker on furniture | The cited manufacturer page is marked discontinued; availability varies by region |
The figures come from the manufacturers’ cited specifications, except the ELAC response and dimensions, which come from What Hi-Fi?’s 2019 review. A response range is not a guarantee of equal output throughout the band, so use these numbers to understand positioning and system priorities rather than to predict an exact in-room result.

Passive means a separate amplifier
A passive speaker receives an amplified signal from an external stereo amplifier or AV receiver. It cannot play directly from a phone, television headphone output or a line-level streaming box. Your system needs a source, an amplifier with speaker outputs, two speakers and cable. If the amplifier has a subwoofer output, you can add a powered subwoofer later without replacing the speakers.

Cabinet size is a trade-off, not a sound-quality rating
A smaller cabinet is easier to hide and usually easier to place, but it leaves less internal volume for low-frequency output. The larger ELAC cabinet is the bass-oriented option in this shortlist; the Q Acoustics and KEF models are easier to accommodate on ordinary furniture. Wall-mount designs solve a different problem: they reduce furniture clutter and visual projection rather than maximizing bass from a small enclosure.
Near-wall placement changes the decision
“Close to a wall” can mean a shallow shelf, a speaker on a stand a few centimetres from the wall, or a purpose-built wall speaker. Those are not equivalent. A conventional bookshelf model has a cabinet and rear terminals that need physical room, while the DALI is designed around a slim wall format and a down-firing port. Measure the available depth and the space above the shelf before choosing a model.
Model-by-model guide
Q Acoustics 3020i: the flexible all-rounder
The 3020i is the easiest recommendation when you have not finalized the installation. Q Acoustics lists a 278 × 170 × 282 mm cabinet and a 64 Hz–30 kHz frequency response. It can sit on its fitted rubber feet on a shelf, go on conventional stands, or use optional dedicated stands and wall brackets. That range of mounting choices lets the same speaker move with you if a temporary shelf installation becomes a permanent stand or wall setup.
Its recessed low-profile terminals reduce how far cable connections project behind the cabinet. That is useful on a shallow shelf, although it does not eliminate the need to check the speaker’s full depth and the clearance required by the cable bend. Leave a little space around the cabinet so the speaker does not touch the wall or rattle against the furniture.
Choose the 3020i when adaptability is more important than chasing the deepest published bass figure. It is also the most straightforward shortlist option for renters or anyone who wants a reversible installation: start with the supplied feet, then add compatible hardware only after confirming the bracket’s load rating and the wall construction.

ELAC Debut 2.0 B6.2: the bass-first choice
The B6.2 is specified at 6 ohms and 87 dB sensitivity. What Hi-Fi?’s 2019 review reports a 44 Hz–35 kHz response and dimensions of 37.4 × 19.5 × 26.8 cm. Among these four models, it occupies the most cabinet volume and reaches the lowest published bass figure, making it the logical pick when you want more low-end weight without immediately adding a subwoofer.
The trade-off is physical. A deep, heavy bookshelf cabinet can overhang a narrow shelf, block a television remote sensor or sit too close to a rear wall. Use a rigid shelf or stand, keep both speakers at the same height, and check that the support can carry the cabinet without flexing. If your available space is genuinely shallow, the B6.2’s bass advantage may be less valuable than a smaller speaker that can be positioned correctly.
Because the published load is 6 ohms, confirm that your amplifier is rated for that impedance before buying. The sensitivity figure is useful when comparing it with a modest amplifier, but amplifier capability, listening distance and room gain still determine the practical volume you will achieve.
KEF Q150: compact conventional bookshelf placement
KEF describes the Q150 as a compact passive bookshelf speaker and lists 86 dB sensitivity measured at 2.83 V/1 m. That is a useful reference for amplifier matching, but the cited specification does not establish a cabinet dimension here, so measure the actual unit and your shelf rather than assuming that “compact” means shallow.
The Q150 suits buyers who want a normal bookshelf or stand speaker rather than a slim wall panel. Before placing it near a wall, verify the rear clearance recommended for the cabinet and allow space for the speaker cable. A shelf that is wide enough for the front baffle can still be too shallow once the cabinet, terminals and cable bend are included.

Pick the Q150 when a conventional compact footprint and straightforward furniture placement matter more than the B6.2’s deeper published extension or the 3020i’s explicit optional bracket ecosystem. Keep the pair symmetrical and avoid trapping one speaker in a corner while the other is in open space.

DALI calls the OBERON ON-WALL a “slim, discreet and surprisingly powerful on-wall speaker.” Its down-firing bass-port system is designed around wall placement, so it is the clearest fit when the goal is to keep speakers off shelves and stands. The shallow visual profile can work beside a wall-mounted television, in a hallway listening area or anywhere furniture space is limited.
The cited DALI page is marked discontinued. Treat that as a buying risk rather than assuming the model is available everywhere: check your country’s current stock, warranty and replacement-bracket situation before designing the installation around it. If local availability is uncertain, the 3020i is the safer shortlist choice because its manufacturer explicitly documents shelf, stand and optional bracket use.
Wall mounting still requires a sound fixing method. Identify studs or use anchors rated for the wall material, route the cable before tightening the bracket, and confirm that the speaker cannot slide or vibrate against the wall. Follow the hardware instructions for spacing and load; do not substitute a generic bracket unless its dimensions and load rating are compatible.
Choose by room and installation constraint
| Your priority | Best starting point | Why | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smallest practical conventional bookshelf setup | KEF Q150 or Q Acoustics 3020i | Both are intended for bookshelf or stand use; the 3020i also documents optional wall hardware | Actual cabinet depth, shelf load and rear cable clearance |
| One model that can move between shelf, stand and wall | Q Acoustics 3020i | Its fitted feet, stand option and dedicated optional brackets cover the widest range of installations | Bracket compatibility, wall material and the space needed behind the cabinet |
| Most bass from this shortlist without a subwoofer | ELAC Debut 2.0 B6.2 | It has the lowest published bass figure and the largest enclosure here | 6-ohm amplifier support, shelf depth and stand capacity |
| Speaker nearly flush to the wall visually | DALI OBERON ON-WALL | Purpose-designed slim wall format with a down-firing port | Regional availability, discontinued status and secure wall fixing |
| Modest amplifier already in hand | Compare KEF Q150 and ELAC B6.2 specifications first | Their published sensitivity figures are close enough that impedance and amplifier compatibility deserve equal attention | Supported impedance range, listening distance and desired volume |
Amplifier matching without guesswork
Check impedance before wattage
Start with the speaker’s nominal impedance and the amplifier’s supported range. The B6.2 is listed at 6 ohms; the cited Q150 specification gives sensitivity but does not give an impedance figure for this model, so obtain the current manual or specification for your exact regional version. Never assume that every small stereo amplifier is comfortable driving every nominal load.

Use sensitivity as a comparison tool
KEF lists 86 dB at 2.83 V/1 m, while ELAC lists 87 dB sensitivity. These are laboratory-style reference figures, not a promise of identical loudness in your room. A one-decibel difference is small compared with the effects of listening distance, room reflections and placement, so do not choose solely on sensitivity.
Allow headroom for real listening
An amplifier that sounds clean at moderate level can clip when asked to play loud, complex music. Use the manufacturer’s continuous-power guidance, avoid running the volume control at its limit, and leave thermal ventilation around the amplifier. If you regularly listen at high levels or sit far from the speakers, a more capable amplifier is safer than selecting a speaker purely because it is small.
Confirm the complete signal chain
Connect the left amplifier output to the left speaker and the right output to the right speaker, observing polarity at both ends. Use cable with secure terminations, keep bare strands from touching adjacent terminals, and disconnect power before changing wiring. A passive speaker cannot compensate for a missing amplifier, an incompatible load or a loose connection.
Placement and installation procedure
- Measure the location. Record shelf width, usable depth, height to the ceiling or television, and the weight the furniture can support. Include the connector and cable bend in the depth measurement.
- Choose the mounting method. Use the 3020i’s fitted feet for a shelf, a rigid stand for free-space placement, or the manufacturer’s optional brackets when wall mounting. Treat the DALI as a wall-installation project rather than a shelf speaker. For the KEF and ELAC, use furniture or stands that fully support the cabinet.
- Protect the cabinet from vibration. Keep the speaker stable and level. Do not let it touch a wall, glass panel or another object that can buzz. On a shelf, the supplied rubber feet or an appropriate isolation pad can prevent sliding.
- Set a symmetrical layout. Place the two speakers at similar distances from the main listening position, with tweeters at approximately ear height when seated. Avoid putting one speaker in a corner unless you can compensate by moving the pair or adjusting the system later.
- Leave port clearance. Do not seal a rear port against the wall or push a conventional bookshelf cabinet into a recess. The DALI’s down-firing port is part of its wall-oriented design, but the bracket and lower clearance must still follow the installation instructions.
- Connect and test quietly. Verify polarity, select the correct amplifier input and begin at low volume. Play a familiar recording, listen for buzzes or imbalance, then raise the level gradually.
- Fine-tune by moving the speakers, not by forcing them. Small changes in distance from the wall and toe-in can alter bass and stereo focus. Move both speakers together and change one variable at a time so you can identify what helped.
Common mistakes and fixes
“The speaker fits, but the shelf does not”
Cabinet width is only one dimension. A rear terminal, banana plug or angled cable can require additional depth, while a front overhang can make the speaker unstable. Re-measure with the cable attached, then choose a deeper shelf, shorter connector or stand.

Move both conventional bookshelf speakers farther from the wall if the room allows, keep them out of corners and check that the shelf is not resonating. If the room cannot provide clearance, favor a model and mounting method intended for that constraint rather than forcing a large cabinet into a recess.

“The amplifier shuts down”
Turn the system off and inspect for stray wire strands, reversed or shorted connections and blocked amplifier ventilation. Recheck the amplifier’s supported impedance against the speaker specification. If the protection circuit returns at ordinary listening levels, stop using the combination until the manufacturer or a qualified technician confirms compatibility.
“One channel sounds quieter”
Swap the left and right cables at the amplifier, then at the speakers, to isolate the fault. Check the source balance control and confirm that both speakers are wired with the same polarity. A loose terminal or damaged cable can mimic a speaker problem.
“Wall mounting creates rattles”
Check every fastener, bracket interface and cable path. Ensure the wall anchor is appropriate for the wall material and that the cabinet is not touching the wall outside the intended mounting points. Do not increase volume until the mechanical source of the rattle is corrected.
Buying checklist
- Measure the complete available depth, including terminals and cable.
- Confirm whether you need a shelf, stand or wall installation.
- Check amplifier impedance support before ordering, especially for the 6-ohm ELAC B6.2.
- Compare sensitivity figures only when their measurement conditions are stated.
- Verify current dimensions, bracket compatibility and regional warranty for the exact model.
- For the DALI OBERON ON-WALL, confirm local availability because the cited page is marked discontinued.
- Budget for stable stands or correctly rated wall hardware; the speaker price alone is not the installation cost.
- Plan cable routing before fixing a bracket or pushing a speaker onto a shallow shelf.
Verdict
The Q Acoustics 3020i is the strongest general recommendation because it accommodates the widest range of discreet installations without committing you to a wall-only design. The ELAC Debut 2.0 B6.2 is the specialist choice for deeper bass when its larger cabinet and 6-ohm load suit your room and amplifier. The KEF Q150 is a sensible compact bookshelf alternative, provided you verify its actual depth and wall clearance. Choose the DALI OBERON ON-WALL only when a slim wall format is the central requirement and you have confirmed that the discontinued model is available and supportable in your region.
