Marshall Emberton II is the strongest conventional-speaker match if you want a small, stereo Bluetooth speaker with an amp-inspired look, a genuinely useful physical control knob and IP67 protection. Tivoli Audio PAL BT is the more distinctive alternative when analog radio controls, FM reception, an auxiliary input and a headphone output matter more than stereo playback or a formal IP rating.
Neither should be called the best-sounding without independent listening tests; the documented differences are in control layout, format, connections, protection, size and manufacturer battery claims.

Why physical controls change the choice
Many compact speakers put almost everything behind a phone app. That can be convenient at home, but it is awkward when your phone is charging, another person is controlling the music, or you simply want to turn a knob without opening software. A retro design makes the controls part of the object: the speaker looks like equipment rather than a featureless plastic puck.

The two models take different approaches. Emberton II uses one multidirectional control knob to combine the common playback actions. Tivoli PAL BT separates its functions into traditional knobs, including a real tuning dial for FM. That distinction matters more than small differences in dimensions because it determines how the speaker behaves when you are not using Bluetooth.
Marshall Emberton II: the conventional portable-speaker pick
Design and portability
Emberton II is deliberately styled after a small amplifier. Marshall describes its textured silicone sleeve as recalling the vinyl covering used on classic amplifiers, with a grille and script logo completing the look. At 160 × 68 × 76 mm and 0.7 kg, it is short and relatively light for a stereo portable speaker. Those measurements are manufacturer specifications, not a measurement made for this article.
The proportions make it easy to place on a desk, shelf, kitchen counter or picnic table without giving up the visual identity that attracts people to retro equipment. It is still a modern sealed portable speaker, however, rather than a miniature vintage amplifier with analog circuitry.
What the top controls do
The top panel has a multidirectional control knob and a separate Bluetooth pairing button. Marshall says the knob can turn the speaker on or off, start or pause playback, skip tracks and adjust volume. That gives you the most important music controls without reaching for a phone. The separate pairing button keeps connection management distinct from playback.
Marshall’s own short description is: “Control it with the multi-directional control knob.” The important qualification is that the knob does not provide the independent tuning, source and volume controls of a radio; it is a multifunction digital control.

Audio, wireless and durability specifications
Emberton II is specified as a stereo speaker with two 2-inch full-range drivers and two passive radiators. It uses Bluetooth 5.1 and has no wired audio input. If you need to connect a turntable, laptop headphone output or other source with a cable, this model is not the right fit unless that source can transmit Bluetooth.
The IP67 rating covers dust resistance and protection against temporary immersion under the conditions defined by the rating. It is a formal ingress-protection code, unlike a general statement that a cabinet is weather resistant. Do not treat the rating as permission to charge the speaker while wet; dry the speaker and its port before connecting power.

Marshall claims more than 30 hours of playback. The company also says a 20-minute charge provides four hours of playback. Both figures are manufacturer claims and should be treated as conditions-dependent rather than guaranteed runtime in every listening situation. High volume, a cold environment or an aging battery can reduce endurance.
Price and app qualification
The official US product page displayed $159.99 when accessed. That is a dated price snapshot, not a promise of the current price or availability in another country. Marshall says its app is optional and that the speaker works without it, which is useful if your priority is immediate physical operation rather than app-based setup.
Tivoli Audio PAL BT: the radio-first retro alternative
Design and controls
PAL BT is a compact, colorful portable radio/speaker with a more literal analog appearance. Tivoli describes it as having three simple, functional knobs. The detailed controls are a power/source knob, a volume knob and a larger tuning dial; Bluetooth pairing is handled by a button on the rear.

This arrangement is easier to understand at a glance when you switch among FM, Bluetooth and an auxiliary source. You can turn a tuning dial instead of dragging a frequency indicator on a screen. Tivoli’s product wording says, “With vivid colors and three simple, functional knobs, the PAL BT embodies a simpler time when audio quality and reception were most important.” That is a description of the interface, not independent evidence of sound quality.

Mono playback and connections
PAL BT is mono. It can still be a sensible choice for speech, radio, background listening or a single-room setup, but it is not a like-for-like stereo competitor to Emberton II. The published connections include Bluetooth, FM radio, an auxiliary input and a headphone output. Those wired options make it more adaptable to older sources and private listening than Emberton II.
Size, weight and cabinet protection
The detailed product page lists dimensions of 6 × 3.6 × 4.5 inches and a weight of 2 pounds. That is substantially heavier than the 0.7 kg Emberton II specification, despite both being compact. Tivoli calls the cabinet weather resistant, but no IP code appears in the reviewed text. Without an IP rating, do not infer a defined level of dust sealing or immersion protection.
The battery figures are inconsistent
Tivoli’s official PAL BT pages do not agree on one runtime. The introductory section of one detailed page says 14+ hours, its technical specifications list 10 hours, and a separate official PAL BT page states a minimum of 16 hours. The conflict may reflect different generations, regional versions or page maintenance. Confirm the exact model revision and its manual before relying on a single number.
Charging requirements
Tivoli’s FAQ says to use a USB-C Power Delivery-compatible charger delivering at least 2.5 W and no more than 20 W, and identifies 20 W at 9 V as the fastest charging arrangement. Verify the manual for your exact PAL BT revision before buying a charger; do not assume that any USB-C adapter will provide the same charging behavior.

Which speaker fits your use?
Choose Emberton II for stereo music and outdoor confidence
- You want stereo output from a conventional portable Bluetooth speaker.
- You prefer one multifunction control that handles power, playback, track skipping and volume.
- You need a formal IP67 dust-and-water rating rather than an unspecified weather-resistant claim.
- You value the lighter 0.7 kg body and the manufacturer’s 30+ hour claim.
- You do not need FM radio, an auxiliary input or a headphone output.
Choose PAL BT for radio and source flexibility
- You specifically want FM reception and a physical tuning dial.
- You want separate source, volume and tuning controls instead of one multifunction knob.
- You need an auxiliary input or headphone output for wired use.
- You prefer a colorful radio shape and accept mono playback.
- You are prepared to verify the exact battery specification and charger requirements for your revision.
Choose by control philosophy, not only appearance
Both speakers look retro, but they create different routines. Emberton II is still a modern Bluetooth speaker with a digital control scheme placed on top. PAL BT behaves like a radio that also accepts Bluetooth. If you mostly start playlists from a phone, Emberton II’s knob is likely the more direct interaction. If you regularly change stations or sources, PAL BT’s dedicated controls avoid mode-dependent button presses.
Setting up Emberton II without relying on an app
- Charge the speaker with a suitable USB-C power source before extended use, especially if it has been stored for a long period.
- Turn it on with the multidirectional control knob.
- Press the separate Bluetooth pairing button and select Emberton II in your phone, tablet or computer’s Bluetooth menu.
- Use the knob for volume, play/pause and track skipping after pairing.
- Install Marshall’s app only if you want its optional software features; Marshall says the speaker operates without the app.
The speaker has no wired audio input, so a source must support Bluetooth. If a second device is connected unexpectedly, disconnect it from the first device’s Bluetooth settings before pairing the intended source.

- Charge PAL BT using a USB-C PD-compatible charger within Tivoli’s stated 2.5 W minimum and 20 W maximum range. Check the manual for the exact revision.
- Use the power/source knob to select Bluetooth, FM or the auxiliary input.
- For Bluetooth, press the rear pairing button and choose PAL BT from the source device’s Bluetooth menu.
- For FM, extend or position the antenna as designed for your model, select the radio source and rotate the tuning dial to the station.
- For a wired source, connect it to the auxiliary input and select the auxiliary position; use the headphone output when you need private listening.
- Adjust loudness with the dedicated volume knob rather than changing source selection accidentally.
Because PAL BT is mono, placing it centrally can make speech and radio easier to follow. It will not create left-right stereo separation from a Bluetooth music stream.
Battery claims: how to read the numbers
Runtime figures are not interchangeable specifications. Marshall’s “30+ hours” is a manufacturer claim for Emberton II, while Tivoli presents three different PAL BT figures across official pages. A plus sign indicates a stated minimum or threshold, whereas a plain technical-specification number may represent a stated test condition that is not shown in the reviewed material.
When comparing your own use, consider whether you play music loudly, leave Bluetooth connected between sessions, use FM, or operate in cold weather. None of those factors is quantified in the supplied manufacturer claims, so a lower real-world result would not by itself identify a fault.

Water, dust and outdoor use
Emberton II’s IP67 code gives you a defined rating to consult when planning outdoor use. It does not make the speaker indestructible, and the charging port still needs to be dry before power is connected. PAL BT’s weather-resistant wording is less specific: it supports cautious use around ordinary weather but does not establish an immersion or dust-test level.
If a speaker will live beside a pool, travel in dusty conditions or face frequent splashes, the presence of an IP code is a more useful decision point than a retro finish. If it will stay indoors or under cover, PAL BT’s radio functions may outweigh that difference.
What this comparison can and cannot establish
The published information establishes control layouts, audio format, connections, dimensions, weight, protection language and manufacturer battery claims. It does not establish which speaker sounds better, reaches a higher maximum volume, has stronger bass, lasts longer in an independent test or maintains a Bluetooth connection better in a particular building.

For most people seeking a compact retro Bluetooth speaker with physical controls, Marshall Emberton II is the clearer recommendation: it combines a small stereo body, a useful top control knob, Bluetooth 5.1, IP67 protection and a manufacturer claim of more than 30 hours. Its trade-offs are equally clear: no radio, no wired input and no independent claim of superior sound.
Tivoli Audio PAL BT is the specialist choice. Select it when FM radio, analog source and volume controls, an auxiliary input or headphone output are central to how you listen. Accept mono playback, the heavier body, less specific protection language and the need to verify which conflicting battery figure applies to your model.
