It is a semi-automatic espresso machine with an integrated grinder and both automatic and manual milk frothing. That is a useful starting point if you want fresh-ground espresso with guided controls, but the right choice depends on how much of the process you want to handle yourself, what milk you use and how much bench space you have.

The combination suits someone who wants freshly ground coffee and help through espresso preparation without giving up all control. The trade-off is a relatively large machine and a workflow that may not fit every kitchen or drink preference.
What to weigh before buying
- Space and access: TechRadar calls the machine bulky and notes that its rear-mounted water tank can be awkward to reach. Check the space behind and above the machine as well as its counter footprint.
- Milk texture: TechRadar’s reviewers found its AutoMilq system performed better with plant-based milk than dairy. They reported better dairy results when steaming manually.
- Preset drinks: The guide notes that some common drinks are missing from the preset menu. Consider whether you are comfortable adjusting the workflow rather than choosing a preset.
Choose a machine by the coffee-making work you want to do
The most important distinction is not simply the number of drinks on a menu. It is how much preparation and control the machine gives you, and how much work it expects from you.

How to narrow down the right machine for your kitchen
- Decide between capsules and fresh-ground coffee. Capsules prioritize convenience; a machine with a grinder gives you a fresh-bean workflow but adds preparation and cleaning.
- Choose your control level. If you want the machine to stop a shot at a preset amount, consider semi-automatic. If you want to stop the flow yourself, a manual machine gives you that responsibility.
- Match milk features to your drinks. If you regularly make milk drinks, check whether the machine froths automatically, uses a steam wand or supports both. For the Breville pick, TechRadar’s reviewers preferred manual steaming for dairy and reported stronger automatic results with plant-based milk.
- Check the physical layout. Measure the available counter space and check where the water tank, controls and grinder sit. A rear-access tank can be inconvenient if the machine will be pushed against a wall or under cabinets.
- Look beyond preset menus. Confirm that the drinks you actually make are available as presets, or that you can readily customize them.
- Check current Australian availability and price. Prices and stock for specific shortlisted models were not established here. De’Longhi Australia’s catalogue is a live source for its current range, but its displayed models and prices can change; verify the exact Australian model and retailer listing before purchase.
