Best Coffee Concentrates: Flavor, Strength and How to Choose

Coffee concentrates are not interchangeable: their dilution instructions, flavor, caffeine disclosure, packaging and servings per bottle vary. In NBC Selected’s October 2, 2026 roundup, editors said they tested products over two months and named Jot Original Ultra Coffee Concentrate best overall. That is their verdict, not an independent test by Freedom251. The right choice for you also depends on whether you want a smooth, chocolate-forward cup, a single-origin option, or a clearly labeled caffeine amount.

How the concentrates compare

The available product details come from different publications and dates, so treat them as attributed examples rather than a single head-to-head test. The sources do not provide comparable current prices for these products; check the seller’s listing and calculate cost per prepared cup using the bottle’s stated yield.

Jot Original Ultra Coffee Concentrate NBC Selected named it best overall in its October 2, 2026 roundup. Tester Zoe Malin described it as smooth, rich and chocolate-forward, and said she especially liked the vanilla flavor. NBC Selected’s product details NBC lists 14 cups per bottle and a ratio of 0.5 part concentrate to 8 parts water. Those are product-specific instructions and yield, not a standard for other concentrates. Current price and stock may change.
Kloo WIRED’s 2025 review discusses Kloo’s single-origin options and its own sensory impressions. WIRED’s review WIRED reports 0.75 ounce concentrate to 7 fluid ounces of water, 12 servings per bottle, and refrigeration for up to three weeks after opening. These details are from a separate 2025 review, not NBC’s 2026 test; verify current packaging and instructions.
TrueStart Espresso Coffee Concentrate TrueStart’s UK-market product page lists water and 100% Colombian Arabica coffee concentrate (13%) as ingredients, and states natural caffeine at 150 mg per 100 ml. TrueStart product page The page presents it as mixable with milk or water; a comparable serving yield is not stated on that page. This is a UK-oriented product page and does not establish availability in every country. Check the local label for ingredients and caffeine.

For Jot, the NBC recommendation and flavor notes reflect its editors’ two-month testing process; they are not a universal ranking of all concentrates. WIRED’s Kloo details and TrueStart’s label information answer different questions and should not be treated as part of that same test.

What coffee concentrate is—and how it differs from iced coffee

Coffee concentrate is coffee made with a higher coffee-to-water ratio than a ready-to-drink cup, so it is generally diluted before drinking. Cold brew describes a brewing method: coffee steeps in room-temperature or cold water over a longer period. Iced coffee is traditionally brewed hot and then served cold. Cold brew concentrate is therefore not simply another name for iced coffee; it contains less water relative to coffee than ready-to-drink cold brew.

  • ABOUT 80MG CAFFEINE PER SHOT Each tablespoon of NESCAFÉ Instant Espresso Concentrate contains about 80 mg of caffeine, one serving is 2 tbsp

Marco Suarez, co-owner of Methodical Coffee, told NBC Selected that a typical coffee-to-water ratio is around 1:17, while concentrate is usually around 1:10. These are explanatory approximations, not instructions for a particular bottle. Follow the label because products use different formulas and serving ratios.

How to dilute concentrate

  1. Read the product’s directions. Check the stated amount of concentrate and water or milk per serving. For example, NBC lists Jot’s instruction as 0.5 part concentrate to 8 parts water; WIRED reports Kloo’s as 0.75 ounce to 7 fluid ounces of water. Do not assume those ratios apply to another brand.
  2. Measure a first serving. Use the label’s ratio as your starting point rather than pouring by eye, especially if you are also tracking caffeine.
  3. Choose a hot or cold mixer. Concentrate can be combined with hot or cold water, or with milk if the product’s directions allow. Some products can also be used in drinks or recipes; those uses are product-dependent.
  4. Adjust gradually to taste. Add a little more water or milk if it tastes too strong, or use less mixer next time if you prefer a bolder cup. Changing the dilution changes the drink’s strength and volume, not the caffeine already present in the amount of concentrate used.

As Kaleena Teoh, co-founder and director of education of Coffee Project NY, told NBC Selected: “I think the tricky part is getting the right amount of water to get a balanced strength for the coffee so it tastes good.”

Is concentrate stronger, and how much caffeine does it contain?

Concentrate is more concentrated in coffee relative to water than a prepared cup, but that does not tell you exactly how much caffeine is in a serving. Caffeine depends on the product and on how much concentrate goes into your drink; adding water or milk dilutes the prepared beverage but does not remove caffeine from the concentrate.

Compare products using labeled caffeine in milligrams per fluid ounce or per serving, and check the serving size. Spencer Turer, vice president of Coffee Enterprises, advised NBC Selected: “Keep in mind that when researching caffeine in coffee concentrates, it’s important to look at the amount of caffeine in milligrams per fluid ounce in the concentrate, which is listed on the packaging.” A dilution ratio alone is not a reliable caffeine comparison because products and coffee varieties differ.

  • ABOUT 90MG CAFFEINE PER SHOT Each tablespoon of NESCAFÉ Instant Espresso Concentrate contains about 90 mg of caffeine, one serving is 2 tbsp

TrueStart’s UK product page, for example, lists 150 mg of natural caffeine per 100 ml. That figure applies to the product information on that page, not to coffee concentrate generally. Check the current local packaging for the product you buy.

What to check before choosing a bottle

  • Flavor and aftertaste: Look for tasting notes from a named reviewer or tester, and remember that descriptions such as “smooth” or “chocolate-forward” are subjective. NBC’s notes for Jot are its tester’s impressions.
  • Strength and instructions: Prefer a product with clear dilution directions, then adjust the prepared drink to your taste without losing track of how much concentrate you used.
  • Caffeine disclosure: A labeled amount per fluid ounce or serving is more useful than guessing from a product’s strength or dilution ratio.
  • Yield and value: Compare the current bottle price and stated number of servings in the same market. Cost per prepared cup is meaningful only when both figures are current and the yield follows the product’s prescribed serving.
  • Packaging and storage: Consider how easily the bottle pours, whether it needs refrigeration, and how long it keeps after opening. Use the current label’s storage advice; WIRED’s reported Kloo storage period is from its 2025 review.
  • Product type and ingredients: “Concentrate” can describe different formulations, including espresso-style products. Check the ingredient list and whether the product is intended to be mixed with water, milk, or both.

Convenience is a real reason to choose concentrate: Spencer Turer told NBC Selected, “Concentrates are typically more convenient than brewing a fresh coffee beverage because all the roasted coffee grinding, measuring and brewing was already completed for you.” That convenience is most useful when the label makes preparation and storage clear.

Which one should you choose?

If you want a tested recommendation with a published flavor description and preparation ratio, Jot is the clearest starting point in the current sources: NBC Selected named it best overall and reported its tester’s positive impressions. Choose Kloo if its single-origin options appeal and its reported serving format fits your routine, while verifying current directions and storage details. If caffeine transparency is your main concern, inspect the local package for a clear milligram amount and serving size; TrueStart’s UK page is one example of such a disclosure, not proof that it is available in your market.

For any option, compare the current price against the labeled yield rather than relying on an older roundup’s price. No market-wide winner or consumer-preference statistic is established by these product reviews.
