If you want a co-op survival game to play before State of Decay 3, choose by the part of the experience you most want now: 7 Days to Die for zombies and base defense, Sons of the Forest for horror exploration, Grounded for a shared world that can persist between sessions, or Valheim for open-world exploration and crafting. None is established as a substitute for State of Decay’s survivor-community management.
Xbox Wire’s June 7, 2026 gameplay-reveal article says the team is aiming for a 2027 release; that is a target, not a confirmed launch date. The reveal describes solo play or shared-world co-op for up to four players, settlement construction, maintaining a survivor community, and fighting a zombie threat in an open-world survival sandbox: Xbox Wire’s State of Decay 3 gameplay reveal.

The announced design combines several things—zombie combat, settlement building, and managing a survivor community—so no single recommendation here covers the whole mix. Use this comparison to narrow the choice around your group’s priorities.
| Game | Best fit | What the cited source establishes | Main difference from State of Decay 3 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 Days to Die | Zombies, scavenging, crafting, and base defense | GamesRadar’s 2026 crafting guide includes it among zombie survival games and lists PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. | It is a genre fit, not an established equivalent to survivor-community management. | Sons of the Forest | Co-op horror exploration, crafting, and building | The Steam listing describes surviving alone or with friends in an open-world survival-horror game and tags it for co-op and base building. | Its horror setting and focus differ from State of Decay’s community and settlement emphasis. | Grounded | A group world that can continue between sessions | Obsidian describes it as a multiplayer survival-adventure and says Shared Worlds preserve progress so play can continue when the original host is absent. | Its shrunken-backyard premise has a very different tone and setting from a zombie apocalypse. |
| Valheim | Open-world exploration and survival crafting | The official site describes player-hosted servers and survival play with others; its support FAQ discusses crossplay and says versions continue to be updated at the same pace. | Its Norse fantasy setting and exploration-and-crafting emphasis differ from State of Decay’s modern zombie community loop. |

- Survive Above All: Hunger, thirst, basic safety, and protecting yourself from the weather are all part of the game

- Customize Everything: An extensive crafting system invites you to mix and match materials scavenged from the island, while also modifying the colors, textures, shapes, and styles
- Explore the Island: Solve the mystery of The ARK as you explore this massive island, discovering Explorer's Notebooks (filled with clues!) throughout
That makes it the closest fit on this list by genre, not a confirmed stand-in for State of Decay’s survivor-community management. Check the current store listing for your platform and edition, and confirm whether everyone in your group can play together; the cited guide does not establish crossplay specifics.
For co-op horror exploration: Sons of the Forest
Choose Sons of the Forest if your group wants survival horror, exploration, crafting, and building rather than a modern zombie-community loop. Its Steam listing describes struggling to survive alone or with friends in an open-world survival-horror game and includes co-op and base-building tags: Sons of the Forest on Steam.

For a persistent group world: Grounded Shared Worlds
Grounded is worth considering when the practical issue is keeping a group world going even when the person who started it is offline. Obsidian describes the game as a multiplayer survival-adventure and says Shared Worlds preserve progress so the world can continue without its original host: Obsidian’s Grounded page.

Quick Recap
Best Value
Check these details before choosing together
- Which gameplay element matters most? Choose 7 Days to Die for zombies and defense, Sons of the Forest for co-op horror exploration, Grounded for a world that can persist between sessions, or Valheim for open-world crafting and exploration.
- Can everyone play on their platform? Confirm the current edition and platform for each player, then check whether the game supports the cross-platform setup your group needs. The sources cited here do not verify full platform-by-platform crossplay for every title.
- Does your group need the host to be online? Grounded’s Shared Worlds specifically address continuing a world when its original host is absent. Valheim’s official site describes player-hosted servers; check the current setup details if hosting requirements are a deciding factor.
- Is the setting a deal-breaker? The choices range from zombie survival to horror and fantasy. If the modern zombie-community premise is essential, the other games share only selected survival elements, not the full premise described in the State of Decay 3 reveal.
