1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf you wanted Halo’s reported Project Ekur extraction shooter, start with Helldivers 2. It is the closest overall substitute for a four-player science-fiction squad: you choose equipment together, complete objectives, call in powerful support, and survive a battlefield where friendly fire is always possible. Choose Deep Rock Galactic for class-dependent exploration and replayable caves, Warhammer 40,000: Darktide for first-person hordes and melee pressure, or wait for Halo: Campaign Evolved if the Halo universe matters more than the extraction format.
There is no confirmed one-for-one replacement because Project Ekur’s cancellation and its reported design history come from industry reporting rather than an official product announcement. The recommendations below therefore match the cooperative PvE experiences players can actually choose, not an unverified feature list.

What happened to Halo’s reported extraction game?
In July 2026, an Insider Gaming report claimed that Halo Studios canceled Project Ekur and described a development history that reportedly included a PvE extraction-shooter direction after the earlier Tatanka project. That is a reported cancellation, not an official Microsoft confirmation. Microsoft’s September 22, 2026 Xbox Wire restructuring announcement discussed a new Halo team and a future title but did not name Ekur.

Because Microsoft has not published a complete, final Ekur feature set, nobody can accurately promise that another game reproduces its weapons, progression, extraction rules, map structure, or story. The useful comparison is instead about the player fantasy suggested by the reports: a small squad cooperating in a science-fiction PvE battlefield, making complementary loadout choices, completing objectives under pressure, and replaying missions with friends.
#1 Best Overall
- EXPANSIVE CAMPAIGN: Many real-world locations have been captured using photogrammetry to recreate a living, immersive environment, and multiple infiltration and extraction points and kill list targets provide a whole new perspective on each mission. Take on the Nazi plot solo or work with a partner, with improved co-op mechanics allowing you to share ammo and items, give orders and heal each other.
- ADVANCED GUNPLAY PHYSICS AND TRAVERSAL: Use ziplines, slide down slopes and shimmy along ledges to reach the perfect vantage point, or to sneak past a sharp-eyed lookout. Factor in rifle stock and barrel options along with gravity, wind and heart rate while you line up your sights on the target.
- HIGH CALIBRE CUSTOMISATION: Use workbenches to customise and upgrade virtually every aspect of your weapon – change scopes, stocks, barrels, magazines and more. Rifles, secondaries and pistols all have a huge variety of options. On top of that you can select the ammo to suit your target, from armour-piercing right down to non-lethal.
- INVASION MODE – CAMPAIGN DROP IN PvP AND CO-OP: Invade another player’s Campaign as an Axis sniper and engage in a deadly game of cat and mouse, providing a new dimension to the challenge as you stalk your prey. Alternatively, as Karl you can call for assistance and have a second sniper drop in to help you out of a tricky situation.
- TENSE ADVERSIAL MULTIPLAYER: Customise your character and loadout and earn XP, medals and ribbons as you take on intensely competitive 16 player battles that will really test your sharpshooting skills. If co-op’s more your style, you can team up with up to 3 other players against waves of enemies in Survival mode.
The four options below cover different parts of that fantasy. Helldivers 2 is the strongest match for coordinated military-style operations. Deep Rock Galactic turns cooperation into an exploration and resource-gathering problem. Darktide prioritizes close-range survival against dense waves. Halo: Campaign Evolved preserves Halo’s weapons, setting, and campaign co-op, but it is not an extraction game.

1. Helldivers 2: the closest overall substitute
Helldivers 2 is the best first stop for anyone who imagined Ekur as a modern military-science-fiction co-op game. PlayStation describes it as a frenetic third-person cooperative team shooter in which players fight across a hostile galaxy. Missions support up to four online players, so a complete four-person group can fill the squad without relying on matchmaking.
Why it matches the missing squad fantasy
Every player brings a loadout and a set of stratagems, then the team coordinates those choices around shared objectives. Stratagems can provide weapons, defensive equipment, ammunition, or devastating support from outside the immediate fight. The important decision is not simply which gun feels best; it is how the squad covers mobility, crowd control, anti-armor needs, survivability, and the objective itself.
The third-person camera makes the battlefield easy to read while moving between objectives, and the game’s scale gives support calls a physical presence. A successful mission usually depends on deciding when to push, when to regroup, and which resources to spend rather than on every player pursuing a separate kill count.
The friendly-fire rule changes how four friends play
Friendly fire is always on. Explosives, orbital attacks, sentries, and even ordinary weapons can injure or kill teammates. That rule creates the communication discipline many players want from a squad shooter, but it also makes careless equipment choices punishing. Call support away from the team’s escape route, announce airstrikes before throwing them, and leave room for allies to cross a fight before deploying area-denial tools.
Friendly fire is also the clearest reason Helldivers 2 is not a friction-free replacement. Players who want independent power fantasies may find the accidental deaths frustrating. Players who enjoy shared responsibility will find that the danger makes positioning and voice chat meaningful.
Price and platform qualification
The official PlayStation listing showed a $39.99 standard edition when accessed for this article and listed the game for PS5, PC, and Xbox. That is a time-specific listing, not a universal or permanent price: regional taxes, sales, editions, and platform policies can change. The same page also listed a Super Citizen Edition.
Best fit and limitations
- Pick it if: you want four-player online missions, military-science-fiction presentation, coordinated equipment, objective play, and dramatic battlefield support.
- Expect: a live-service game whose factions, content, prices, and platform policies can change.
- Do not expect: a confirmed recreation of Ekur’s reported systems or a campaign built around Halo’s weapons and fiction.
2. Deep Rock Galactic: the teamwork-and-exploration choice
Deep Rock Galactic is the strongest alternative when cooperation means making the environment workable for the whole team. Its developer presents mining operations in which “TEAMWORK IS KEY,” with players relying on distinct classes and equipment to move through dangerous caves, collect resources, and finish objectives.

- Play as movie heroes Dr. Bravestone, Ruby, Mouse, and Prof. Shelley in a hilarious new 3D action adventure.
- In online or split-screen modes, work together with up to three friends or AI teammates to defeat enemies, survive deadly traps, and save the world.
Why its classes matter
The class design gives each player a practical job rather than four interchangeable damage builds. The developer specifically highlights tools such as flamethrowers, plasma chargers, and platform launchers. A platform can create a route or bridge a gap; a traversal tool can reach a deposit that another class cannot; a weapon can control a tunnel while the team works. The result is cooperation expressed through movement and access as much as through shooting.
That division of labor is a strong match for players who want to talk through a problem before firing. One person identifies the next resource, another establishes a route, and another covers the team during a swarm. When the squad ignores those roles, the cave becomes harder even if everyone’s equipment is individually powerful.
Replayable caves and progression
Ghost Ship Games says no two caves will ever be the same. Procedural variety changes the routes, sightlines, verticality, and practical value of class tools from one operation to the next. The game also includes rank progression, giving regular groups a reason to return beyond a single story mission.

This is not the same loop as a military extraction shooter. The tension comes from navigating, mining, defending, and getting out of an underground space rather than from occupying a battlefield with a conventional front line. If your imagined Ekur replacement is primarily about tactical corridors, large combat arenas, and orbital support, Helldivers 2 is closer. If it is about a team depending on one another to reach an objective and escape a hostile environment, Deep Rock Galactic may be the better fit.
Best fit and limitations
- Pick it if: your group likes exploration, resource gathering, procedural spaces, distinct classes, and problem-solving through movement.
- Expect: objectives shaped around mining and cave operations rather than standard military deployments.
- Do not expect: a Halo-like arsenal or a confirmed Ekur-style extraction system.
The developer’s official site also links a Deep Rock Galactic board game. That is an optional extension for fans of the setting, not part of the video game’s co-op requirements.
3. Warhammer 40,000: Darktide: the horde-combat choice
Darktide is the recommendation for players who want the most relentless combat of the group. Fatshark’s official site presents an actively updated cooperative game set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, with new missions, weapon families, and classes. Its combat is first-person and places unusual pressure on surviving dense enemy waves at close range.
Why the combat feels different
Darktide combines firearms with a substantial melee layer. Enemies can collapse on the team quickly, turning a supposedly safe firing position into a scramble for space. Blocking, dodging, timing attacks, and protecting a downed teammate are as important as aiming. Ranged weapons still matter, but the group cannot assume that distance will remain available.
That makes Darktide a useful choice for players who want the pressure of a horde game rather than the broad battlefield of Helldivers 2. A squad’s formation, target priority, and retreat route matter because the enemy can surround it. Communication is often about immediate survival: calling an elite enemy, warning that ammunition is low, or deciding who will hold a doorway while another player revives an ally.

- Fight your way through a perilous world In a 4-player co-op story campaign where you must work together to survive increasingly challenging missions
- Choose from 8 customizable cleaners and a range of lethal weapons and items
- Play with or against friends in PvP
- A new Roguelike card system creates different experiences each and every time

Ongoing updates and setting
Fatshark’s official site currently advertises updates including Depths of the Damned, alongside new missions, weapons, and playable classes. Live updates mean the available content and balance can change over time, so a guide written around a particular class or weapon should be checked against the current version.
The Warhammer 40,000 setting is also a major commitment. It is darker, more oppressive, and more deliberately grim than Halo’s military science fiction. That difference is a feature if you want a grimdark atmosphere; it is a mismatch if you want clean military hardware, heroic space-opera tone, and Halo’s visual language.
Best fit and limitations
- Pick it if: you want first-person combat, dense waves, melee pressure, and a dark science-fiction universe.
- Expect: close-range danger to shape encounters as much as shooting does.
- Do not expect: Halo’s tone, a military sandbox, or an extraction loop confirmed to match Ekur.
4. Halo: Campaign Evolved: the direct Halo answer
Halo: Campaign Evolved is the most direct answer for readers whose priority is playing Halo with friends, even though it does not replace an extraction shooter. Halo Studios announced two-player split-screen and online or networked co-op for up to four players on console and PC, with cross-platform play.
What it preserves
A campaign remake keeps the parts that alternatives cannot: Halo’s fiction, weapon identity, enemy factions, vehicles, and mission style. If your group wants to replay familiar campaign scenarios or experience them together for the first time, this is the option that addresses the underlying Halo preference rather than imitating it through another universe.
What it does not provide
The announced feature set describes campaign co-op, not a repeatable extraction structure. You should not buy or plan around it expecting procedural operations, persistent extraction progression, or the live-service mission cycle associated with the reported Ekur concept. Its release timing is also subject to change because it was announced as a future project.
For that reason, Campaign Evolved works best as a second answer: choose Helldivers 2, Deep Rock Galactic, or Darktide for a game you can use as an immediate co-op PvE substitute, and keep Campaign Evolved on your list if the Halo setting is non-negotiable.
How the four choices differ
| Decision axis | Helldivers 2 | Deep Rock Galactic | Darktide | Halo: Campaign Evolved |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Core activity | Complete objectives across hostile planetary operations | Mine, traverse, gather resources, and complete cave objectives | Advance through missions while surviving enemy hordes | Play Halo campaign missions cooperatively |
| Camera | Third-person | First-person | First-person | Halo campaign perspective |
| Team identity | Shared loadouts and stratagem coordination | Distinct classes and complementary traversal equipment | Cooperative strike team with ranged and melee roles | Shared campaign progression and Halo abilities |
| Environmental challenge | Open combat spaces, objectives, enemy pressure, and friendly fire | Procedurally varied caves, vertical routes, and resource logistics | Chokepoints, waves, elites, and limited safe space | Designed campaign levels rather than procedural extraction maps |
| Progression information | Loadout and live-service progression; details can change | Rank progression is described by the developer | Classes, weapons, and updates are actively expanded | Campaign co-op announced; future details may change |
| Best reason to choose | Closest overall science-fiction squad operation | Best teamwork through exploration and class synergy | Best for relentless horde combat | Best for staying inside the Halo universe |
Choose by the kind of evening your group wants
For four friends who want a military-style operation
Choose Helldivers 2. The up-to-four online structure, shared objectives, loadout planning, stratagems, and friendly-fire rule all make the squad feel like one unit. Agree on roles before launching: who handles heavy targets, who carries defensive support, who brings ammunition or utility, and who can clear a retreat route.

For a group that enjoys exploration and improvisation
Choose Deep Rock Galactic. Its caves ask the team to read the environment and combine class tools. It is particularly suitable for players who enjoy discovering a route, gathering resources, and adapting when a familiar objective appears in an unfamiliar layout.
Rank #4
- Arcade-paced, bullet-time fueled, cooperate FPS
- Kick down doors, shoot bad guys, exploit the element of surprise
- Instantons cooperative multiplayer thrills both local and online play
- Daily Play challenges, leaderboards, and unlockable rewards for incentive replay value
- Randomly generated cases, operations, and environments
For players who want immediate combat pressure
Choose Darktide. The horde structure makes each mission about maintaining a defensible position, controlling close-range threats, and recovering quickly when the line breaks. It is a better fit than the other options if your group prefers constant action to long periods of traversal or planning.
For players who mainly want Halo
Choose Halo: Campaign Evolved when it becomes available and when campaign co-op is enough. It is the only choice here that retains Halo’s setting and campaign identity. Until then, use Helldivers 2 for the closest current sci-fi squad substitute rather than treating another game as a hidden Halo sequel.
A practical selection checklist
- Decide whether the setting or the format matters more. If the setting is Halo, Campaign Evolved is the relevant future option. If the format is repeatable PvE operations, compare the three available co-op shooters.
- Choose your camera preference. Helldivers 2 is third-person; Deep Rock Galactic and Darktide are first-person. Camera perspective changes how much of the battlefield you can see while moving and how weapons feel.
- Identify your group’s preferred teamwork. Pick shared stratagem planning in Helldivers 2, class-and-traversal dependence in Deep Rock Galactic, or formation and melee survival in Darktide.
- Set expectations about repetition. Deep Rock Galactic emphasizes caves that do not repeat, while Helldivers 2 and Darktide are live-service games whose missions and content can change. Campaign Evolved is built around designed Halo campaign missions.
- Check the current platform and price before buying. The Helldivers 2 listing examined for this guide showed PS5, PC, and Xbox availability and a $39.99 standard edition at that time. Regional pricing, editions, platform policies, and future availability can differ.
- Confirm your communication plan. All three current recommendations benefit from voice or text coordination. If your group cannot communicate, avoid relying on the most coordination-heavy loadouts and start with lower difficulty or simpler roles.
Common mistakes when replacing a canceled game
Assuming the reported design is a confirmed specification
Project Ekur’s reported cancellation does not establish a final feature list. Statements that present extraction rules, progression, weapons, or story details as settled facts go beyond what has been officially announced. Compare the available games by their documented features instead.

Helldivers 2, Deep Rock Galactic, and Darktide all provide cooperative PvE missions, but they create tension differently. Deep Rock Galactic’s cave and mining objectives, Darktide’s horde pressure, and Helldivers 2’s planetary operations should be treated as distinct loops rather than interchangeable labels.
Ignoring friendly fire and role dependence
Helldivers 2 can punish an unannounced support call, while Deep Rock Galactic can punish a team that ignores class tools. Darktide can punish a squad that loses formation when a horde arrives. Discuss those rules before the first mission instead of interpreting a predictable failure as a bad game.
Using old platform or pricing information
Live-service content, regional prices, editions, retailer stock, and platform policies are volatile. Recheck the relevant store page immediately before purchase, especially if your group is split across platforms or is choosing between standard and expanded editions.
Verdict
Helldivers 2 is the closest overall replacement for the reported Halo extraction-game concept. It offers the clearest combination of science-fiction squad play, four-player online missions, coordinated loadouts, objective pressure, and consequential friendly fire. Choose Deep Rock Galactic instead when exploration and class synergy are your priorities, or Darktide when relentless first-person hordes and melee combat are more appealing. Choose Halo: Campaign Evolved when preserving Halo’s universe and campaign co-op matters more than reproducing an extraction format.
