If you want another game that feels most like Escape Academy, start with Escape Simulator: it uses interactive rooms, objects and clues, and supports online co-op. For a different kind of teamwork, choose We Were Here or its sequels, where each player sees different information and must communicate a solution. Portal 2 is the strongest physics-and-spatial alternative, while Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes turns communication into short, high-pressure bomb-defusal rounds. It Takes Two is excellent for two players who want a changing story adventure, but it is a looser match for an escape-room fan.
There is no single best choice for every pair. The right game depends on whether you want rooms, separated clues, physics, timed verbal instructions or a broader two-player adventure.

Escape Simulator: the closest follow-up to Escape Academy
Why it fits
Escape Simulator is the natural first recommendation when the part you liked most was physically searching a room, picking up objects and connecting clues. Pine Studio describes it as a first-person puzzler playable alone or in online co-op, with interactive escape rooms and a level editor. You can examine objects directly, combine information and work through mechanisms together rather than taking turns on a conventional board-game interface.

Room scale and community content
The built-in rooms are listed as suitable for up to three players, although the store description recommends that limit rather than presenting it as a universal rule for every scenario. Community rooms have been tested with up to ten players. The community collection was listed at more than 4,000 rooms in 2026; that total is volatile, so treat it as an approximate snapshot rather than a permanent specification.
The editor and workshop integration are important if you expect to keep playing after the campaign-style rooms. They let creators publish additional scenarios, so the amount and quality of content varies. Read a room’s description and player-count guidance before starting with a large group.
Choose it when
- You want the closest room-based format to Escape Academy.
- Your group prefers exploring objects at its own pace instead of racing a clock.
- You may play with three people or occasionally organize a larger community-room session.
It is not identical to Escape Academy: room themes, puzzle logic and pacing differ. The attraction is the same broad activity—cooperatively investigating a space—not a one-for-one recreation of another game’s design.

What makes the series different
In the We Were Here games, the two players are separated. Each person receives only part of the information needed to progress. In the first game, one player is the Librarian and the other is the Explorer in an abandoned castle. They describe symbols, objects and room layouts through voice communication and a walkie-talkie, then use those descriptions to guide each other.
This asymmetrical design changes the social dynamic. You are not jointly looking at the same lock; you are translating observations into useful instructions. A patient partner who asks precise questions can be more valuable than someone who solves a clue quickly but explains it poorly.

We Were Here
The first game is the clearest introduction to the format. It is an online, first-person cooperative puzzle adventure for two, and the official listing includes PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch with cross-platform play. Expect compact situations built around comparing separate clues and testing whether your description is specific enough.
Choose it if you want the shortest route from an escape-room mindset to the series’ signature split-up communication. It works especially well for two people who enjoy talking through uncertainty rather than silently manipulating the same objects.

We Were Here Too
We Were Here Too uses the same fundamental idea: two players are separated and solve asymmetrical puzzles through communication, teamwork and observation. Its official page lists PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch, with cross-platform play.
Treat it as another chapter in the same style rather than a completely different genre. It is a good next choice when you already know that the divided-information format suits your partnership and want more scenarios without changing the basic rules of cooperation.
We Were Here Forever
We Were Here Forever is described by its developer as the fourth game in the series. It keeps the two-player, online, first-person structure and asymmetrical puzzles, then places them in a larger story involving Rockbury and Castle Rock. The listing covers PC, PlayStation and Xbox and states that cross-platform gameplay is supported.

This is the series entry to favor when you want the communication mechanics plus more exploration and narrative momentum. It asks you to stay engaged with the world between individual puzzles, making it a better fit for a pair looking for an adventure rather than a sequence of disconnected tests.

- Read symbols exactly, including color, orientation and repeated marks.
- Confirm an instruction before acting when a wrong input could reset a puzzle.
- Say what you have already tried so your partner does not repeat a dead end.
Portal 2: a complete two-player puzzle campaign
Why it belongs on the list
Portal 2 is not an escape-room collection, but its dedicated cooperative campaign is one of the strongest choices for coordinated problem solving. Steam describes a separate two-player story with unique test chambers and two new characters. The puzzles revolve around portals, momentum, timing, environmental hazards and spatial planning.
Both players can usually see the same chamber, yet success still depends on coordination. One person may place a portal while the other carries an object, times a launch or activates a switch. The game rewards experimentation: failed attempts are often useful information about the physics rather than a simple penalty.
Local or online play
The Steam listing identifies both online co-op and shared/split-screen co-op. That makes Portal 2 a practical choice when you and your partner are in the same room, as well as when you are playing remotely. Confirm the mode supported by your platform before purchasing, especially if your pair is mixing hardware.
Choose it when
- You prefer physics and spatial reasoning to searching a room for hidden objects.
- You want a structured campaign with a distinct two-player story.
- You value local split-screen as an option as well as online play.
It is less suitable if your favorite Escape Academy moments involved inventory-style clue hunting. Portal 2’s challenge is understanding and exploiting a small set of powerful mechanics.

Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes: high-pressure communication in short rounds
How a round works
In Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes, one player can see the bomb, while the other players use the defusal manual and cannot see the device. The bomb-viewer describes modules, wires, symbols and indicators; the manual-holder identifies the correct instructions and communicates them back. The team must be verbally precise before the timer expires.
The official page classifies it as local co-op, party and puzzle play, and lists PC, mobile, console and VR availability. Remote groups can use a voice-chat service. One copy of the game is enough for the team, and the manual is available to view online or print for free, so a second game license or paid manual is not required.
Why it stays replayable
Procedurally generated bombs change the combination of modules from one attempt to the next. Steam Workshop support adds community-created content. That makes the game particularly effective for repeat sessions, parties and pairs who enjoy improving their shared vocabulary under pressure.
Choose it when
- You want sessions that fit into several short rounds.
- Your group enjoys urgency more than leisurely exploration.
- You have a local party or a remote voice channel and want everyone to participate verbally.
This is not a continuous escape-room campaign. Its appeal is the repeated communication challenge: identify the module, find the relevant rule and deliver the instruction accurately before time runs out.

What changes compared with escape-room games
It Takes Two is built specifically for two players and changes its character abilities and gameplay from level to level. EA describes couch co-op and online play through Friend’s Pass. Instead of keeping one puzzle format, it mixes platforming, action sequences, minigames, environmental interactions and story scenes.
Best Value
That variety is its reason to be here—and also why it should not be marketed as a direct escape-room substitute. Choose it when you want a long, evolving co-op adventure in which puzzle solving is one activity among many. If your group wants every session to center on clues, locks and room mechanisms, Escape Simulator or We Were Here is a better starting point.
Platform note
EA’s page lists PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch. On October 8, 2026, EA also highlighted Switch 2 availability. Regional release details and current platform support can differ, so verify the store listing for both players before relying on a particular version.
Choose by the kind of cooperation you enjoy
If you want rooms, objects and clues
Pick Escape Simulator. Its interactive-room structure is the nearest continuation of Escape Academy, and the editor and community rooms provide a large changing pool of additional scenarios.
If each player having different information sounds appealing
Start with We Were Here, then continue with We Were Here Too or We Were Here Forever. The first two emphasize the core separated-partner format; Forever adds more story and exploration around that format.
If you want systems to experiment with
Choose Portal 2. Its cooperative campaign turns portals and physics into the shared language, with online and split-screen options on the Steam listing.
If you want short, tense sessions
Choose Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes. It is the most flexible option for a party because the manual can be shared freely, one copy is sufficient and additional players can participate in local play.
If you want a story adventure rather than a puzzle specialist
Choose It Takes Two. Its changing abilities and activities make it the broadest recommendation, but also the least similar to a dedicated escape-room game.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPlan the session before you buy
- Count the players. Most entries are designed around two people. Escape Simulator’s built-in rooms recommend up to three, while community rooms may support larger groups; Keep Talking is the explicit party-oriented exception.
- Match the play location. Decide whether everyone will share a screen or connect online. Portal 2 lists both online and shared/split-screen co-op; It Takes Two supports couch and online play; the We Were Here games are built around online communication.
- Check platform and cross-play details. A game being available on two systems does not automatically mean those systems can play together. The We Were Here pages state cross-platform support, but verify the current listing for your exact pair of devices.
- Arrange voice communication. Voice chat is central to We Were Here and Keep Talking. Test microphones before starting, and agree on precise descriptions for colors, directions and symbols.
- Decide how much replay you need. Escape Simulator’s editor and community rooms and Keep Talking’s generated bombs and Workshop content are the clearest options for ongoing variety. A fixed campaign may be preferable if your group wants a curated beginning and ending.
Common pitfalls and how to avoid them
- Assuming every recommendation is an escape-room game: Portal 2 is a physics campaign, Keep Talking is a modular timed challenge and It Takes Two is a mixed story adventure.
- Ignoring communication skill: In We Were Here and Keep Talking, unclear descriptions can be the real obstacle. Use agreed reference points and repeat critical instructions.
- Overlooking player-count limits: A community room that supports many people may not play well with a large group, and built-in Escape Simulator rooms are recommended for up to three.
- Buying an unnecessary accessory: Keep Talking’s manual is free to view or print, and none of these games requires a particular controller or VR headset across the entire list.
- Relying on an old platform list: Store pages and regional catalogs change. Check availability, cross-play and the selected edition immediately before purchase.
Bottom line
For the most direct follow-up to Escape Academy, choose Escape Simulator. Choose the We Were Here series if communication and asymmetric information are what made co-op puzzles memorable. Pick Portal 2 for physics, Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes for repeatable timed rounds, and It Takes Two when you want a much broader two-player adventure.
