Best Co-Op Pirate Games to Play Instead of Sea of Thieves

Skull and Bones is the clearest pirate-themed multiplayer alternative if your group wants ship combat, ship builds, and shared-world events. It is not a like-for-like replacement for Sea of Thieves: its focus is naval progression, while Sea of Thieves is more strongly shaped by crew-led sandbox play and encounters with other crews. For cooperative survival and crafting, consider Windrose, which PC Gamer reported entering early access in April 2026. If you mainly want a solo pirate adventure, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag delivers Caribbean exploration and ship combat, but it is not co-op.

Which co-op pirate game is closest to Sea of Thieves?

Choose Skull and Bones if what you want most is sailing with friends, fighting from ships, and improving a naval loadout. Ubisoft describes solo and team play, ship classes, progression, and cooperative events in a shared world. Its official description also mentions an ocean of up to 20 players; that figure describes the shared world, not a 20-player co-op party. Ubisoft’s official Skull and Bones page lists the game’s current features and platforms.

The distinction matters if you are searching for “games like Sea of Thieves.” Similar pirate settings do not guarantee similar multiplayer structure. PC Gamer characterizes Sea of Thieves around crew-based play and competition between crews; Ubisoft’s framing for Skull and Bones emphasizes ship combat and build choices instead. If social encounters with other crews are the core of what your group enjoys, that difference may outweigh the shared pirate theme. PC Gamer’s pirate-game guide provides the comparison context.

Best alternatives by the kind of pirate adventure you want

Naval combat and progression with friends: Skull and Bones

Skull and Bones is the strongest fit here for a group interested in ship classes, loadouts, advancement, and cooperative events. Ubisoft lists cross-play and cross-progression, and says a free trial is available on PC storefronts, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. It also says trial progress and purchases carry over. Availability can vary by platform and region, so check Ubisoft’s live page and your storefront before relying on access or carryover for a particular account.

#1 Best Overall
Pirates Plund-Arr
  • Fight your way through a fantastic adventure with creature-filled areas including a murky swamp, an Aztec temple and a haunted village
  • Share the excitement with up to 3 other friends in a party style, 2D beat-em up
  • Find and use an arsenal of weapons with 5 distinct weapon types and dozens of variations, each with different attacks and abilities
  • Use the environment to your advantage; pick up and throw rocks and barrels to damage creatures, or just pick up your enemies and throw em overboard
  • Fight up to 40+ unique enemies from skeletons to zombies and battle giant deadly bosses that will try to keep you from finding your treasure

This is a better match for a crew focused on building and fighting with ships than for players seeking an open-ended social sandbox organized around unpredictable meetings between rival crews. The available descriptions establish cooperative play and shared-world events, but do not establish that those systems reproduce Sea of Thieves’s crew-versus-crew dynamic.

Co-op survival, crafting, and ship repair: Windrose

Windrose takes a survival-and-building route: PC Gamer describes open-world exploration, gathering resources, crafting a base, repairing a ship, rescuing a crew, and ship battles that can include boarding. That mix makes it worth considering if your group wants to prepare and maintain a home and vessel as part of the pirate adventure, rather than focusing chiefly on naval progression.

PC Gamer reported on 14 April 2026 that the game was entering early access. Because early-access status and availability can change, confirm the current listing on your platform before buying or planning a group session. The cited coverage does not establish the game’s current release status beyond that report. PC Gamer’s Windrose coverage describes its systems and early-access timing.

Solo Caribbean exploration: Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag is a strong option for a solo pirate campaign built around sailing the Caribbean, exploring ports, hunting for treasure, diving, and fighting from a ship. It is not a co-op substitute for Sea of Thieves: the recommendation is for players who want the pirate atmosphere and exploration without requiring multiplayer. PC Gamer and Le Monde both describe its Caribbean setting and ship-focused activities. Le Monde’s 2025 pirate-game roundup also covers other styles of pirate games.

Le Monde’s roundup includes Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, SteamWorld Heist II, and Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew, which span action, turn-based tactics, and stealth. They can broaden a pirate-game shortlist, but the cited roundup does not establish them as direct co-op replacements for Sea of Thieves. Choose them for their particular genre and play style, not on the assumption that they offer the same kind of crew-based multiplayer.

How to choose for your group

  • You want ship fights and shared progression: start with Skull and Bones, and confirm the trial and cross-play details for your region and platforms.
  • You want to gather, build, and keep a ship running: look at Windrose, checking its current early-access or release status first.
  • You want a pirate campaign, not multiplayer: choose Black Flag for its solo Caribbean adventure.
  • You want other crews to be central to the experience: do not treat pirate setting alone as proof of a close match; the available descriptions position Skull and Bones around naval combat and builds, rather than establishing the same crew-versus-crew sandbox loop as Sea of Thieves.
