Best Co-Op Games to Play With a Non-Gamer or Younger Player

The best first shared game depends on what the new player finds comfortable. Choose Untitled Goose Game for a clear, cooperative objective; Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for short, familiar racing rounds; Minecraft in Creative mode for open-ended building; Overcooked! 2 for teamwork with time pressure; and It Takes Two only when both players are comfortable with a Teen-rated adventure. Before buying, confirm the exact platform, edition, player count, age rating, and local or online requirements.

Quick answer: which game should you try first?

For most mixed-experience pairs, start with a mode that has a shared goal, lets the experienced player explain without taking over, and does not punish experimentation. That usually makes Untitled Goose Game the gentlest first recommendation. The two players work together as geese, planning pranks rather than competing for a score.

If the new player would rather try something in brief sessions, choose Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Nintendo includes it in its guide for introducing someone who is less experienced with games, and individual races are easy to stop between attempts. It is primarily a racing and competitive game, however, not a cooperative campaign.

For a child or adult who likes making things, try Minecraft in Creative mode. For players who enjoy communication and a little frantic energy, Overcooked! 2 can be excellent, although its time pressure is not relaxing for everyone. It Takes Two is designed specifically around two-player cooperation, but its ESRB Teen rating and content descriptors make it unsuitable as the automatic choice for a younger child.

How to match a game to the players

Think through these five questions before choosing a title. They matter more than a generic “best game” ranking.

1. How old is the younger player, and what content is acceptable?

Use the rating board for your territory and read the descriptors, not just the age label. ESRB rates Minecraft E10+ for Fantasy Violence, while its parental guide also lists a PEGI 7 rating. ESRB rates It Takes Two Teen for Animated Blood, Comic Mischief, Fantasy Violence, and Language. Those are substantially different content decisions even though both games can be played cooperatively.

2. Do both players want cooperation or competition?

Cooperative play means the pair pursues a shared objective. Nintendo explicitly describes Untitled Goose Game’s two-player mode as two geese teaming up to plan pranks. Mario Kart, by contrast, is racing: Nintendo recommends it as an approachable way to introduce a new player, but the basic activity is still competing in races.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. What pace feels fun?

Some new players need time to look around and ask questions. Others learn fastest when a game gives them a concrete task. Overcooked! 2 is chaotic cooperative cooking that asks players to coordinate under pressure; that can create funny teamwork or immediate stress. Minecraft Creative mode is much slower and more exploratory. Mario Kart offers short attempts, while It Takes Two is a longer adventure with changing situations.

4. Will you play in the same room or online?

Check the exact platform and edition before purchase. No current official listing establishes current local-multiplayer details for every candidate, and Minecraft’s multiplayer setup varies by edition and platform. EA states that It Takes Two’s Friend’s Pass supports local and online co-op for a first-chapter trial; for the complete game, one player must own it. Do not assume that a feature listed for one edition applies to another.

5. What controls can the new player comfortably manage?

Ask whether steering, moving a camera, or handling several inputs at once sounds manageable. Detailed control and accessibility settings were not established for every game in this shortlist, so check the current product page or in-game options rather than promising a particular assist feature. A patient partner and a low-stakes first session often matter as much as the control scheme.

Shortlist at a glance

Game How the shared play works Pace and learning profile Age or content information Main caveat
Untitled Goose Game Two players control geese and cooperate on pranks across the game. Task-based and collaborative; the pair can discuss what to try next. The cited Nintendo guide describes the cooperative mode but does not provide a rating in the supplied material. Verify current platform availability and accessibility options.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Players race, so the mode is competitive rather than a shared campaign. Familiar racing and short rounds make it easy to attempt, stop, and try again. Nintendo includes it in a guide for introducing less-experienced players; the supplied material does not establish a rating. Do not describe it as cooperative, and verify the edition and any assist options.
Minecraft Players share a world. Creative centers on building; Survival adds hunger and health mechanics. Creative is open-ended and unhurried; Survival adds more systems to learn. ESRB E10+ for Fantasy Violence; the parental guide also lists PEGI 7. Multiplayer and couch-play arrangements depend on edition and platform.
Overcooked! 2 Players cook together and divide tasks while communicating. Chaotic, coordinated, and time-pressured rather than calm. A University of Sydney family factsheet suggests age 8+; younger children may need help. The cited platform and subscription information is older, so verify current requirements.
It Takes Two An adventure created specifically for two-player co-op. Structured progression with changing cooperative challenges. ESRB Teen for Animated Blood, Comic Mischief, Fantasy Violence, and Language. Not the default pick for a younger child; Friend’s Pass only provides a first-chapter trial.

Untitled Goose Game: best for a shared first objective

Nintendo’s new-player guide describes a two-player cooperative mode in which “two horrible geese” honk together and plan pranks. That design gives both players the same immediate purpose: look at the situation, decide what to disrupt, and work out how to do it. A new player does not need to understand a large character build, inventory system, or competitive ranking before contributing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why it works for mixed experience

  • The pair can talk through a task before acting.
  • Both players have a reason to watch the same space and coordinate.
  • The experienced player can suggest an idea without needing to perform every action.

When to choose something else

Do not buy it on the assumption that every console or computer version has identical multiplayer or accessibility options. Check the current product listing for the platform you own, including whether the two-player mode is available in that edition.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: best for short, low-commitment attempts

Racing is familiar even to people who rarely play games: steer, stay on the track, and reach the finish. Nintendo names Mario Kart 8 Deluxe in its guide to introducing someone less experienced. Short races also create natural breaks, so you can change settings, explain one control, or stop without abandoning a long story section.

What the experienced player should explain

  • How to steer and recover after leaving the track.
  • What an item does when it appears, instead of explaining every item in advance.
  • That finishing position is less important than learning the course and having another attempt.

The important distinction

Mario Kart is not a cooperative campaign. Players normally race against one another and the computer. Choose it when friendly competition is welcome or when the new player prefers a clear, repeatable activity. If losing feels discouraging, start with a relaxed agreement that the first races are practice rather than a test.

Minecraft: best for building together

Minecraft appears in Nintendo’s guide for new players because it lets a beginner enter a world and make something at their own pace. The mode matters. The parental guide distinguishes Creative, focused on building, from Survival, where hunger and health mechanics add risk and resource management.

Start with Creative mode

Creative is the safer first experiment for a player who is still learning movement and the camera. Agree on a small project such as a house, bridge, garden, or signposted village. The experienced player can demonstrate one building action, then let the new player choose materials and layout.

Move to Survival only when the systems sound appealing

Survival introduces hunger and health, so the pair must gather resources and respond to danger as well as build. That can be rewarding for players who enjoy a challenge, but it adds more rules for someone who is still learning the controls. Explain one immediate task—finding shelter or collecting basic materials—rather than presenting every crafting recipe at once.

Content and setup checks

ESRB lists Minecraft as E10+ for Fantasy Violence, and the cited parental guide lists PEGI 7. Ratings vary by territory, so use the rating board relevant to your family. Multiplayer arrangements depend on the edition and platform; verify whether the version you plan to buy supports the local or online setup you want.

Overcooked! 2: best for communication under pressure

A University of Sydney factsheet describes Overcooked! 2 as cooperative cooking built around teamwork and communication, suggests age 8+, and notes that younger children may need help. Players divide kitchen jobs, pass ingredients, prepare dishes, and react to changing layouts while a clock creates urgency.

Choose it when the pair likes energetic teamwork

  • Both players enjoy talking constantly and assigning tasks.
  • Small mistakes are funny rather than upsetting.
  • A timed challenge feels motivating instead of stressful.

Make the first session manageable

  1. Explain one job at a time, such as washing dishes or chopping ingredients.
  2. Use short instructions: “I will chop; you put it on the plate.”
  3. After the round, change one responsibility so both players learn the kitchen.
  4. Pause the experiment if the clock is creating arguments; a slower game may be a better fit.

It Takes Two: a strong co-op design for older players

EA describes It Takes Two as an adventure created purely for co-op, so the two players are essential to progression rather than merely sharing a screen. Friend’s Pass supports local and online co-op for a first-chapter trial. To continue through the full game, one player must own it.

Why it is not the default younger-player recommendation

ESRB rates It Takes Two Teen for Animated Blood, Comic Mischief, Fantasy Violence, and Language. The Teen classification makes it a poor automatic choice for a younger child even though its cooperative structure is excellent. Check the rating board and your household’s content rules before starting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When it makes sense

Choose it for two players who both want a structured adventure and are comfortable with the listed content. Discuss whether online play is needed, then confirm that Friend’s Pass and the full-game ownership arrangement match your plan.

A practical first-session plan

The first hour should test comfort, not prove gaming ability. Use this sequence with any of the shortlisted games.

  1. Agree on the goal. Say whether you are building, completing a prank, finishing a race, cooking a dish, or reaching the next story section.
  2. Show one control. Demonstrate movement or steering, then hand the controller back. Avoid a long lecture about every button.
  3. Give the new player an active job. In a building game, let them choose the design; in a cooking game, give them one station; in a racing game, let them set the practice pace.
  4. Keep the first attempt short. A race, one kitchen round, or one small building project gives you useful feedback without fatigue.
  5. Ask what felt difficult. Was the problem the camera, timing, unclear objective, or content? Change that variable before switching games.
  6. Stop while it is still positive. A successful short session makes a second attempt more likely than forcing completion.

Buying and setup checklist

  • Confirm the exact platform and edition.
  • Verify local player count and whether the desired mode is actually available.
  • For online play, check the current service, account, and subscription requirements.
  • Read the rating and content descriptors for your territory.
  • Check whether both players need a controller or input device.
  • For Minecraft, confirm which edition you are buying before planning multiplayer.
  • For It Takes Two, confirm whether Friend’s Pass covers your intended first chapter and who owns the full game.
  • For Overcooked! 2, verify current platform and subscription information rather than relying on an older listing.
  • Do not assume that an accessibility or assist feature exists until the current edition’s options confirm it.

Common mismatches and how to recover

The new player keeps losing races

Mario Kart may be functioning exactly as designed: it is competitive. Remove the pressure to place highly, run another short race, or move to a shared-objective game such as Untitled Goose Game or Creative-mode Minecraft.

Cooperative play feels like one person is doing everything

Set a rule that the experienced player explains but does not take the controller. In Minecraft, give the new player ownership of the project’s design. In Overcooked! 2, switch stations between rounds. In a Goose Game prank, ask the new player to propose the next attempt.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The game feels too fast

Overcooked! 2 deliberately adds time pressure. If the clock prevents learning, choose a slower activity first and return later. Short Mario Kart rounds can also help a player who needs frequent resets, while Minecraft Creative provides the most room to pause and explore.

The content is not right for the child

Stop and use the relevant rating board’s descriptors. Minecraft’s E10+ Fantasy Violence and It Takes Two’s Teen descriptors are classifications, not guarantees that a particular family will consider the content acceptable. Choose an age-appropriate title rather than trying to explain away a rating.

The promised multiplayer arrangement does not work

Recheck the platform, edition, mode, and online requirements. Multiplayer details can differ between versions, and the supplied evidence does not establish a universal couch-play setup for every candidate. If the product page does not clearly confirm your arrangement, do not buy on assumption.

Decision guide

If the players want… Start with… Why
A shared task with minimal competition Untitled Goose Game The cited Nintendo description centers on two geese planning pranks cooperatively.
Very short attempts and familiar racing Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Nintendo recommends it for introducing less-experienced players, and races provide natural stopping points.
Building without a strict timer Minecraft Creative The parental guide describes Creative as focused on building.
Energetic teamwork and communication Overcooked! 2 Its cooperative cooking design requires players to coordinate tasks under pressure.
A longer, purpose-built two-player adventure for Teen-rated audiences It Takes Two EA created it specifically for co-op, with a Friend’s Pass trial for the first chapter.

Bottom line

Choose by relationship and comfort, not by the game’s reputation. Untitled Goose Game is the clearest shared-objective starting point; Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the easiest short-session introduction; Minecraft Creative suits builders; Overcooked! 2 suits players who enjoy noisy coordination; and It Takes Two belongs with older players who accept its Teen rating. Confirm the exact edition and multiplayer arrangement before purchase, then make the first session short, collaborative, and easy to stop.
