The important distinction is between storing photos and protecting them. A cloud library can be convenient yet incomplete if videos are excluded, a folder is not selected, the account quota is full, or the app has been restricted by battery settings. This guide compares capacity, quality, privacy, discovery, recovery and setup so you can choose a service and verify that your Pixel library is actually protected.

No single service wins every category. In particular, “unlimited photos” does not necessarily mean unlimited Pixel video, and a second cloud copy does not replace an independent archival copy.

What a Pixel backup service must do
Back up every folder you actually use
Pixel cameras normally write to the Camera folder, but screenshots, downloaded images, edited exports, messaging-app media and screen recordings may live elsewhere. A service that backs up only the camera roll can leave important files on the phone. Look for a folder-selection screen and review it after installing the app.

Handle original quality and large video files
Original-quality backup preserves the file as captured, including full-resolution photographs, RAW files where supported and high-resolution video. It consumes substantially more storage than compressed or storage-saver modes. Pixel owners who record 4K video should check the service’s video allowance separately from its photo allowance.
Show an unambiguous completion state
A thumbnail appearing in a gallery is not proof of upload. Google’s help documentation notes that the Photos app can display local items even when they are not backed up. A reliable workflow includes an item-level backup indicator, an account storage view and a way to check that the library is visible from another device or the web.
Offer recovery, export or migration tools
Accidental deletion, a damaged phone and a move between providers are normal events, not edge cases. Check how long deleted files remain recoverable, whether originals can be downloaded in bulk and whether the service can import an existing library.
Google Photos: the easiest Pixel experience
Google Photos includes 15 GB at no cost, shared across Photos, Gmail and Drive. That quota can disappear faster than expected when email attachments and Drive files use the same space. Google One lists 100 GB for $1.99 per month and 2 TB for $9.99 per month.
Why it remains the default recommendation
- Backup is built into the Pixel and Android experience rather than being an afterthought.
- You can choose which device folders are included, control mobile-data use and inspect backup status.
- Search, albums, sharing and access from other devices are integrated into the same library.
- Original quality supports full-resolution RAW photos and 4K video, subject to your available shared quota.
How to configure backup on a Pixel
- Open Google Photos.
- Tap your profile picture, then choose Photos settings.
- Open Backup and turn it on.
- Review Back up device folders and enable screenshots, downloads or app-specific folders you need.
- Set your mobile-data limit, or restrict uploads to Wi-Fi if your plan is limited.
- Leave the phone charging on Wi-Fi and check the backup status before deleting anything locally.
Google warns that battery optimization can interfere with background backup. If uploads pause, review the battery settings for Google Photos, open the app and let the pending queue finish, then confirm the status again.
Amazon Photos: the strongest Prime-based photo alternative
Amazon gives every customer 5 GB. In supported countries, Prime members receive unlimited full-resolution photo storage plus 5 GB for videos and other files. That distinction matters for Pixel owners: a Prime account can hold a very large photo collection while still running out of space when a library contains frequent 4K recordings.

When Amazon Photos makes sense
- You already pay for Prime and want to use an included photo benefit.
- Your library is photo-heavy and your video collection fits within the 5 GB allowance.
- Full-resolution photos are more important to you than a single, unlimited photo-and-video quota.
Android setup and the video check
- Install and open the Amazon Photos Android app.
- Sign in to the account that has the Prime benefit, if applicable.
- Enable Auto-Save for the Android camera roll and grant the requested photo permissions.
- Review whether videos are selected for upload.
- Compare the size of your Pixel videos with the account’s 5 GB video allowance before relying on the service as your only copy.
If the video allowance is too small, leave videos in a separate storage plan or use another destination for video originals. Do not assume the unlimited-photo wording covers them.

Proton Drive: privacy-first backup
Proton Drive is the clearest choice when preventing the provider from reading stored files matters more than having the largest free quota. Proton says its mobile backup uses end-to-end encryption and zero-access encryption, meaning Proton cannot decrypt the stored files. The free tier includes 5 GB; paid plans reach up to 3 TB.
What the privacy model changes
End-to-end encryption protects files before they leave the phone and keeps the provider from inspecting their contents. That is valuable for sensitive personal images, but it can limit some server-side conveniences compared with services designed around broad indexing and automated discovery. Decide whether private storage or advanced search is the higher priority for your library.
Set up original-quality backup on Android
- Open Proton Drive and go to the Photos tab.
- Tap Turn on backup and grant photo access.
- Allow the initial upload to run, preferably on Wi-Fi for a large library.
- Open Settings > Photo backup to add folders beyond the default Camera folder.
- Wait for the completion status before removing local files or changing phones.
Proton’s Android instructions state that original-quality backup starts from the Photos tab and defaults to the Camera folder. Add every other folder that matters, especially screenshots and edited exports. The 5 GB free tier is enough for a test or a small photo collection, but paid storage is generally necessary for substantial Pixel video libraries.
OneDrive: best value when Microsoft 365 is already in your budget
OneDrive provides 5 GB free storage. Microsoft lists a 100 GB Basic plan at $1.99 per month or $19.99 per year, and Microsoft 365 Personal with 1 TB at $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year. Microsoft also documents Android photo backup, Personal Vault and ransomware-recovery features.

If you already need Microsoft 365 Personal, the included 1 TB can cover a Pixel photo and video library without adding another storage subscription. The comparison should be made against your total household software budget, not against the storage line alone.

Android backup considerations
Microsoft describes OneDrive as supporting photo backup from Android phones. After enabling camera upload, inspect the selected folders and verify that videos are included if you need them. OneDrive is particularly practical when the same account also stores documents, scans and work files, but readers seeking photo-specific search and album tools may prefer a dedicated photo library.
Recovery and sensitive files
Personal Vault adds an extra access step for files that need stronger protection. Microsoft also documents ransomware recovery features. Treat these as recovery and access controls, not as a substitute for checking that every Pixel folder has uploaded.
Dropbox: a broad file-sync workspace
Dropbox Plus costs $9.99 per month for 2 TB and supports Android and web access for photos, videos and other files. Dropbox lists 30 days to restore deleted files.

Choose Dropbox when your library is part of a wider file system
Dropbox is a good fit if the same workspace must hold project folders, shared documents, scans and media across phones and computers. Its strength is consistent file synchronization and recovery rather than photo-specific discovery.
What to verify before switching
- Confirm that camera uploads include the folders and media types you expect.
- Check how the app handles large videos when the phone is on mobile data or battery saver.
- Confirm that the 2 TB plan covers the combined size of documents and media, not just photos.
- Test downloading an original file from the web before erasing it from the Pixel.
pCloud: useful for migration and secondary storage
pCloud’s documented strength in this comparison is one-time importing. It can import from Google Photos, Google Drive, Dropbox and OneDrive. Google Photos imports are limited to 2,000 photos per backup, and ongoing Google Photos backups are unavailable because of API changes.
Plan a staged migration
- Inventory your Google Photos library and separate photos from large videos if the destination has different limits.
- Start an import batch of no more than 2,000 photos.
- Wait for the batch to complete, then spot-check originals, dates and file counts.
- Repeat until the required photo range is copied.
- Transfer videos separately and confirm that their original files open correctly.
Because ongoing Google Photos backup is unavailable through the documented integration, pCloud is better treated as a migration or secondary-storage tool than as a replacement for continuous Pixel camera backup.

How to verify that your Pixel is really backed up
Use an item-level check
Open several recent photos, older photos, screenshots and videos in the service’s app. Look for the service’s uploaded or backed-up indicator rather than relying on the fact that the item appears in the gallery.
Check the oldest and largest files
A new photo may upload while older folders remain excluded, and short clips may upload while 4K files exceed a limit. Test at least one large video and one file from every folder you selected.
Confirm from another device or the web
Sign in from a browser or second device and open the same files. This catches cases where the phone is showing local thumbnails, cached previews or files stored only on the handset.
Review account capacity and exclusions
Check the provider’s storage meter, video allowance and any file-size or plan restrictions. For Google, remember that Gmail and Drive share the same 15 GB free quota. For Amazon Prime, remember that the unlimited benefit applies to full-resolution photos, not unlimited video.
Keep the phone powered until the queue finishes
Large first-time uploads can take hours or days. Use Wi-Fi, charge the phone and avoid battery restrictions that suspend background activity. Do not factory-reset or wipe the old Pixel until the destination account shows completion and your sample files open elsewhere.
Cloud backup is not the same as an archive
A second cloud copy protects against some forms of phone loss, but it can still be affected by account deletion, an incorrect folder selection, quota exhaustion, synchronization mistakes or a provider policy change. Keep an independent copy of irreplaceable originals on a computer, external drive or another storage system. Periodically open a sample of archived files and update the copy when your library changes.
A practical decision framework
Choose Google Photos if convenience is the deciding factor
Use it when you want the least setup, strong Pixel integration and one place for search, albums and sharing. Budget for the shared quota if Gmail and Drive already consume space.
Choose Amazon Photos if you have Prime and mostly take photos
It can provide exceptional photo capacity in supported countries, but make a separate plan for videos beyond 5 GB.
Choose Proton Drive if provider-readable storage is unacceptable
Accept the smaller free allowance and likely paid upgrade in exchange for end-to-end, zero-access encryption and original-quality backup.
Choose OneDrive if Microsoft 365 already covers your household
The included 1 TB can be a better overall value than buying a separate photo plan, especially when documents and photos belong in one account.
Choose Dropbox if you need a general file workspace
Its 2 TB plan and 30-day restoration are useful when photos are only one part of a broader synchronized file collection.
Choose pCloud for a controlled migration or extra copy
Use staged imports, verify each batch and do not expect the documented Google Photos integration to keep backing up new Pixel photos continuously.
