For workout retention, Tom’s Guide reported that Shokz OpenFit Air 2 stayed secure during the reviewer’s workouts; if you prefer a clip-on, its review of Shokz OpenDots 2 also noted stable workout wear. Those are individual review observations, not promises of fit.

Clip-on or ear-hook: which fit should you choose?
Clip-on earbuds
A clip-on grips or cuffs the outer ear rather than hanging from a hook. It can be a less fussy shape for someone who dislikes an ear hook, but the pressure and stability depend on the individual ear and model. Sony’s optional Air Fitting Cushions are a model-specific way to adjust LinkBuds Clip’s fit; they are not a universal accessory for clip-ons.
Ear-hook earbuds
An ear hook loops over the top of the ear and can provide a more anchored feel for some wearers. The trade-off is that the hook occupies space where glasses, hats or other headwear sit. Try the combination you plan to use before relying on it for long workouts.

What to expect from calls, sound and awareness
Calls depend on the model and environment
Sony says LinkBuds Clip has “precise voice pickup technology” and offers a Voice Boost listening mode; those are Sony’s product claims, not independent proof of best-in-class calls. Tom’s Guide found OpenDots 2 calls intelligible but tinny. If calls matter, look for independent microphone samples or reviews and consider the background noise where you will speak.
Open fit is not isolation
Open designs leave the ear canal unsealed, so some environmental sound remains audible. That does not mean you will hear every hazard or that using earbuds near traffic is safe. Wind, surrounding noise and attention can all affect awareness. Tom’s Guide found OpenDots 2 was drowned out on noisy trains and planes, a reminder that open designs are a poor match when you need strong isolation.

Leakage and bass are real trade-offs
Sound can escape from open earbuds, potentially making listening less private for nearby people. Open designs can also deliver less bass than sealed earbuds, and wind may interfere with listening. If you need deep bass, low leakage or noise isolation, compare sealed models rather than assuming all open-ear earbuds perform alike.

How to compare water resistance, battery and price
Ratings and battery figures are model-specific advertised or reported details, not category-wide guarantees or controlled comparisons. IP ratings also differ between the earbuds and their case, so read each figure carefully. Bose’s “up to” seven-hour stereo play-time claim, for example, applies to its Ultra Open Earbuds; it does not predict another model’s runtime.

Why open-ear earbuds are gaining attention
Omdia’s 2026 report says open-ear products accounted for more than 10% of the global personal-audio market, with annual shipments exceeding 30 million units by 2025.
