ChatGPT Work’s Data agent is the closest general alternative to Claude Dashboards when you want to describe a business question and receive an interactive dashboard built from company data. Choose Power BI Copilot instead when your organization already governs reports and semantic models in Power BI. If your team works in Tableau, Sigma, ThoughtSpot, Omni or Oracle BI, connecting that existing platform may preserve more of your permissions, definitions and publishing workflow than moving to a separate dashboard builder.
There is no independently verified overall winner in the available documentation. The practical choice depends on your data source, required dashboard action, governance model, administrator setup and capacity. What Claude Dashboards does—and what an alternative must replace
Claude Dashboards is documented as a beta feature for Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans. It connects to a warehouse or another connected app, writes a SQL query for each chart, and displays both the query and the chart’s last refresh time. Dashboards begin private and can be shared. Anthropic positions the feature for quick exploratory questions and recommends moving deeper analysis to another tool. That baseline matters because “dashboard alternative” can mean two different things:

ChatGPT Work’s Data agent is the closest match to the first category. Power BI Copilot and the connected BI products listed by OpenAI are usually better understood as the second category. A tool can answer questions about an existing report without automatically creating the same kind of dashboard artifact that Claude or ChatGPT Work creates, so confirm the exact action before switching.

OpenAI describes the Data agent in ChatGPT Work as a way to connect company data, context layers and visualization tools so people can build and explore dashboards with natural-language requests. The resulting dashboards are interactive and can be edited, shared and refreshed. OpenAI’s examples include operational, adoption, retention and financial analyses; those are vendor examples, not a guarantee that your organization will obtain the same result. Typical prompts can be concrete and outcome-focused:
- “Build a dashboard of this quarter’s revenue by region.”
- “Show weekly signups for the last six months, split by plan.”
- “Make a dashboard of my open Salesforce opportunities by stage and owner.”
After the first result, ask for a defined change—such as adding a filter, changing a time grain or separating new and returning customers—rather than issuing a vague request to “make it better.” The agent’s ability to perform that change is determined by the connected tool and your access rights.
Where it is stronger than a single-purpose dashboard beta
- Broader workflow: The documented design combines data sources, context layers and visualization tools instead of limiting the conversation to one warehouse connection.
- Artifact lifecycle: OpenAI says dashboards can be edited, shared and refreshed, which supports an iterative workflow after the first prompt.
- Existing BI connections: OpenAI names Power BI, Tableau, Sigma and ThoughtSpot in its data-team material; its Help Center also lists Omni and Oracle BI as connected tools.
Constraints to verify before adoption
Do not assume that every integration supports dashboard creation, editing, publishing or refresh. OpenAI states that available actions depend on the connected product’s capabilities and your access. Workspace administrators control which connections are available. The Data agent therefore works best when an administrator has already approved the source and the data team has documented the metric definitions the agent should use.

Connected queries use the account’s existing permissions, including table-, row- and column-level restrictions, according to OpenAI’s Data plugin guidance. That is a control, not proof that the resulting chart is safe to distribute. Test with a least-privileged account and inspect the returned data before sharing.
2. Power BI Copilot: the logical choice for an established Microsoft BI estate
What the documented feature covers
Microsoft documents Power BI Copilot for summarizing report content, answering questions and surfacing insights grounded in Power BI report data. It can produce report summaries and executive overviews in the Copilot pane. The cited documentation is about analyzing Power BI reports; it does not establish that Copilot replaces every dashboard-building workflow or that it creates the same artifact as Claude Dashboards.
Use Power BI Copilot when the report, semantic model, definitions and sharing process already live in Power BI. Keeping the conversation in that environment can reduce duplication of metrics and avoid exporting data to a separate dashboard service.
Eligibility and administrator prerequisites
Availability is conditional, not automatic. Microsoft requires administrator enablement, eligible Microsoft Fabric capacity and a supported region. Fabric trial SKUs are not supported. Your administrator should confirm the tenant setting, capacity type, region and licensing status before promising users that Copilot is available. Requirements can change, so check the current Microsoft Learn Copilot documentation during rollout.
When Power BI Copilot is not the right substitute
- Your source data is not modeled in Power BI and you primarily need a new dashboard assembled from several unmodeled sources.
- You need a connector or action that your tenant has not enabled.
- You are evaluating a Fabric trial capacity, which the cited page says is unsupported.
- You need evidence that Copilot builds every chart type or publishing flow supported by another product; the cited material does not make that claim.
3. Connected BI platforms: preserve the system your team already trusts
OpenAI lists Tableau, Sigma, ThoughtSpot, Omni and Oracle BI as connected BI tools in its data documentation. This makes them relevant alternatives when your organization already operates one of those platforms. The value is less about replacing the BI platform and more about adding a natural-language interface to an established environment.

A connection can be attractive when your organization already relies on Tableau’s data model, permissions and publishing conventions. OpenAI’s product material quotes Tableau executive Southard Jones saying that the connection is intended to ground answers in the same business semantics teams use and let users publish new views to Tableau. That is a vendor statement about the product direction, not an independent evaluation. Verify whether your specific Tableau deployment supports the action you need.

Sigma and ThoughtSpot
Sigma and ThoughtSpot are named as connected BI options. They may be a better operational fit than a standalone conversational dashboard when analysts already maintain definitions, access rules and refresh schedules there. The available sources do not provide a side-by-side feature matrix or prove that both products expose identical actions through a connection, so test chart creation, filtering, editing and publishing with a representative account.
Omni and Oracle BI
OpenAI’s Help Center lists Omni and Oracle BI among supported Data connections. Treat that listing as an indication of relevance, not a promise of universal feature parity. Confirm connector availability in your workspace, the objects the connection can read, and whether the resulting analysis remains inside the BI platform or is rendered as a separate dashboard artifact.
How to choose the right alternative
Start with where the authoritative data lives
List every source involved in the dashboard: warehouse, CRM, finance system, spreadsheets and existing BI reports. Then ask whether the candidate can connect to that exact source in your edition and region. A tool that cannot reach the authoritative table will force manual exports, creating a second version of the truth.

Evaluate governance and semantic consistency
Ask how the system handles metric definitions such as “active customer,” “net revenue” or “churn.” A natural-language answer can be syntactically valid while using the wrong business definition. Prefer a platform where the approved semantic model is already maintained, or supply a context layer that explicitly defines the measures. Validate a sample of values against the source query and have the metric owner approve the dashboard before it becomes a recurring report.
Check permissions with a real user role
Use a test account that has the same table, row and column restrictions as the intended audience. Confirm that filters cannot reveal records outside that role, that downloaded data follows the same controls, and that sharing does not broaden access. OpenAI says connected queries honor the account’s existing permissions; your administrator still needs to configure the connection correctly.
Confirm operational ownership
Identify who owns the connection, credentials, metric definitions, refresh schedule and incident response. A dashboard that works only while one analyst’s personal connection is active is not a production process. Document the owner and a recovery path before publishing.

Step-by-step pilot plan
- Choose one bounded use case. Select a dashboard with a clear audience and a small set of approved measures, such as weekly signups by plan for the last six months.
- Record the source of truth. Write down the exact tables or report, time zone, date field, currency and definitions for every measure.
- Ask for the minimum useful dashboard. Use a prompt such as “Show weekly signups for the last six months, split by plan. Use the approved signup definition and display the total and weekly trend.”
- Inspect the generated logic. Where the product exposes SQL or another query, check joins, filters, date boundaries, null handling and aggregation. Claude Dashboards explicitly shows the query for each chart; other products may expose different levels of detail.
- Reconcile values. Compare totals for at least three periods with the source report or a manually verified query. Investigate any difference before adding more charts.
- Test restricted access. Repeat the dashboard with a user who has limited rows or columns. Confirm that both the visual and any export respect the restriction.
- Test refresh and failure behavior. Disconnect the source in a controlled test, observe the error shown to users and document how credentials or capacity are restored.
- Share with a small audience. Use the narrowest sharing scope first. Record who can edit, view, export or refresh.
- Document the production handoff. Store the prompt, metric definitions, owner, refresh cadence, source and validation checks beside the dashboard.
Prompt patterns that produce more reliable dashboards
Specify the measure
Instead of “Show revenue,” write “Show recognized revenue in USD, excluding refunds, using the finance-approved revenue field.” If the definition is not available in the model, state that the result is provisional and requires review.

Include the time grain, date range and comparison: “Display weekly values from January 1 through June 30, using the account-created date, and compare each week with the prior week.” This prevents an agent from silently choosing a different date field or aggregation.
Specify audience and interaction
Describe required filters, default period, drill-down path and viewer role: “Add region and plan filters, default to the current quarter, and let sales managers see only their assigned region.” The system still must enforce that restriction through the connected platform; a sentence in a prompt is not an access control.
Request an explanation alongside the visual
Ask for the source, refresh timestamp, applied filters and a short list of assumptions. This makes review faster and exposes when a chart used a fallback field or incomplete period.

OpenAI says generated dashboards can be edited, shared and refreshed. Its Help Center also warns that publishing through Sites copies the analysis data into the published site. Treat that as a data-handling event: review retention, audience permissions and whether the copied data can become stale or be accessed by people who cannot query the original source.
Claude Dashboards starts private and can be shared, but privacy defaults do not replace a formal access review. For any option, decide whether viewers need the live dashboard, a scheduled snapshot or an exported file; each mode can have different permission and freshness implications.

Common failure modes and fixes
The chart looks plausible but the number is wrong
Check the measure definition, join cardinality, duplicate rows, date field, time zone and currency conversion. Compare the generated query with an approved source query. Do not “fix” a discrepancy by manually editing the displayed number.
The connector is visible but the action is unavailable
Connection availability does not guarantee dashboard creation or publishing. Ask the workspace administrator which actions are enabled, then consult the connected product’s documentation for the specific object and operation.
Users see data they should not see
Stop sharing, revoke the connection or dashboard, and test with a restricted account. Review table-, row- and column-level permissions at the source and in the BI platform. Never rely on a filter written in natural language as the sole protection.

The dashboard is stale
Check the last refresh time, source credentials, capacity limits and failed scheduled jobs. If the product shows a refresh timestamp, place it next to the dashboard’s owner and escalation path so viewers know when the values were last updated.
Power BI Copilot cannot be enabled
Have the administrator verify tenant enablement, eligible Fabric capacity and region. A Fabric trial SKU is not supported according to Microsoft’s cited guidance. If the environment is ineligible, use the existing report experience or pilot a separate connected agent rather than promising Copilot access.
Security and governance checklist
- Approved data sources and connector owner are documented.
- Metric definitions have an accountable business owner.
- Least-privilege access is tested with representative roles.
- Generated queries, assumptions and refresh timestamps are reviewable.
- Exports, shared links and published copies have explicit retention and access rules.
- There is a documented process for correcting a metric without silently changing historical results.
- Users know that vendor examples and fluent explanations are not independent validation.
Which option should you choose?
Choose ChatGPT Work Data when
- You want to begin with a plain-language question and create an interactive dashboard.
- Your sources span a warehouse, business application and one or more BI tools.
- Your administrator can approve the required connections and your team can validate outputs.
Choose Power BI Copilot when
- Your trusted reports and semantic models are already in Power BI.
- You primarily need summaries, answers and insights grounded in those reports.
- Your tenant has eligible Fabric capacity, a supported region and administrator enablement.
Stay with an established connected BI platform when
- Governed definitions, row-level security and publishing workflows already operate there.
- The platform supports the exact AI action your users need.
- Moving the data would create a duplicate semantic layer or complicate compliance.
Use Claude Dashboards when
- Its beta access is available on your plan and a warehouse or connected app contains the needed data.
- You value seeing the SQL behind each chart and the last refresh time.
- The objective is quick exploration, with deeper analysis or production reporting handled elsewhere.
Bottom line
For most teams explicitly seeking a Claude alternative that can build dashboards from company data, start by piloting ChatGPT Work’s Data agent against one governed use case. If your organization already runs Power BI, first check whether Copilot’s capacity, region and administrator requirements are met; its report-grounded summaries and insights may be more useful than moving data to a new dashboard builder. Teams invested in Tableau, Sigma, ThoughtSpot, Omni or Oracle BI should test the connected workflow inside that existing platform before creating a parallel reporting stack.
Whichever route you choose, validate the generated logic against source data, test real user permissions and document refresh ownership before anyone treats the dashboard as an operational decision system.
