The most reliable Civilization VI setup is not a universal preset. Start with the graphics options the game detects automatically, then change one control at a time while checking the same map and display conditions. On Windows, also test the DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 launch choices available through Steam. For readability, use the resolution and window mode that make text and map details clear on your own monitor rather than assuming that a lower resolution is always better.
What “best settings” means in Civilization VI
Performance and readability can pull in different directions. A setting that reduces rendering work may make a game run more comfortably on one computer, while a different resolution or window mode may make interface text easier to read on another display. Civilization VI’s official manual documents the available controls, but it does not publish setting-by-setting frame-rate tests, readability measurements, or one combination that is optimal for every computer.

The manual states: “The game will automatically select the best graphics options for you when you first start the game.” That automatic selection is the safest baseline because it is made for the detected system rather than for a hypothetical universal computer.

The manual names these controls but does not provide a universal value for each slider or a ranked list of which reductions produce a specific frame-rate gain. Avoid copying a preset from another computer as if it were a guaranteed result.
How to tune graphics settings one change at a time
- Record your baseline. Note the current resolution, window mode, selected GPU and the positions of the performance and memory impact controls. Use the same save, camera position and zoom when judging a change.
- Confirm the platform. Windows, macOS and SteamOS/Linux have separate support information. Do not apply a Windows-only launch instruction to a Mac installation.
- Check GPU selection. If the computer has more than one GPU, make sure Civilization VI is using the intended one. A wrong selection can make every later graphics adjustment misleading.
- Test the display arrangement. Compare the available window modes at the same resolution. Keep the mode that gives you stable behavior and readable interface text on your monitor.
- Adjust the performance-impact control. Move it in a small step, restart or reload if the game requires it, and repeat the same test. There is no official figure for the frame-rate gain from a particular position.
- Adjust memory impact only if needed. If the system still pauses, becomes unstable or appears constrained by available memory, make a small reduction and test again. Do not assume that changing this control will fix a graphics-API or driver problem.
- Touch advanced options last. Change one advanced setting, write down the old value, and compare the same workload. If the result is worse, restore the previous value rather than changing several controls at once.
- Stop when the problem is solved. More reductions are not automatically better. Keep the highest visual clarity that remains comfortable on your hardware.
Resolution and window mode for readability
Choose clarity on your actual display
Resolution determines how sharply the game’s text, icons and map elements are represented on your display. A lower resolution can reduce the amount of rendering work in some circumstances, but it can also make text look softer or cause scaling artifacts. The official guidance does not identify an optimal resolution or a universal interface-scale value, so judge this on the monitor and operating-system scaling you actually use.
If text is difficult to read, first try the display mode and resolution that make letters and map symbols crisp. Do not lower resolution solely because it is a commonly repeated performance tip; the change may reduce legibility on a high-density panel. Conversely, if the native mode is too demanding and another supported mode remains clear enough for you, compare it using the same map and zoom.

Window mode can affect how the game behaves when you switch applications and how the operating system scales the image. Compare the modes offered by your installation while keeping resolution constant. If one mode produces blurry text, flickering, poor focus behavior or inconsistent performance, return to the mode that behaves correctly on your system. The manual lists window mode as configurable but does not declare one mode universally superior.

Do not invent a UI-scale recommendation
No official source in the available guidance specifies a numeric interface scale for Civilization VI. If the game or your operating system offers a scaling control, choose the value that makes labels and tooltips comfortable on your screen, but do not present an unverified number as the best setting for everyone.
Performance settings: what the documented controls actually do
Performance-impact slider
The manual identifies a performance-impact control intended to balance visual work against speed. Start at the automatically selected value. If turns, camera movement or map rendering are not acceptable, lower the control incrementally and compare the same scene. Because no official benchmark links a slider position to a fixed frame rate, describe the result in terms of your own observation rather than a promised percentage improvement.
Memory-impact slider
The memory-impact control addresses how much memory the game’s graphics choices are allowed to use. It is separate from the performance-impact control, so change it only when the symptom suggests memory pressure or when a test shows that it helps. A memory setting cannot by itself establish that your computer meets the game’s requirements, and it should not be used as a substitute for checking available RAM and graphics memory.
Advanced options
Advanced options can expose additional visual controls, but the documented guidance does not publish a complete universal reduction order or measured gains for each one. Treat every advanced change as an experiment: alter one option, keep the test conditions constant, and restore the previous value if readability or stability gets worse.

Windows requirements and what they do—and do not—promise
Civilization Support’s Windows requirements page, published and updated January 22, 2025, lists the following baseline figures:

These numbers describe compatibility expectations for the Windows version as displayed on that dated support page. They do not guarantee a particular frame rate, turn-processing time, resolution, visual quality or experience on every map. Hardware details and operating-system support can change, so verify the current official requirements page when installing or troubleshooting.
If your computer is below the minimum, graphics adjustments may not prevent severe slowdowns, launch failures or instability. If it meets the recommended figures, you still need to tune for your display, background applications, drivers and chosen graphics API.
Steam on Windows: choose DirectX 11 or DirectX 12 deliberately
Civilization Support documents Steam launch choices for DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 after removal of the 2K Launcher. The choice is made through Steam’s launch options rather than through the former launcher workflow.

- Open Civilization VI’s Steam properties.
- Locate the launch-options or graphics-API choice provided by the current Steam build.
- Select DirectX 11 or DirectX 12, then launch the game from Steam and test the same workload.
- Keep the API that is stable and performs acceptably on your computer; there is no official claim that one is universally faster.
There is an important launch-path caveat: Civilization Support warns that starting the game from a desktop shortcut opens the DirectX 12 version even when DirectX 11 was selected as the preferred Steam option. For a fair comparison, start from Steam itself and confirm which API you are testing. If a setting change appears to have no effect, first make sure you have not silently switched APIs through a shortcut.
macOS guidance is separate
Aspyr’s Mac support FAQ recommends using the default graphics settings designated at launch. It also warns that running below the minimum requirements can cause severe performance problems and crashes. That advice is platform-specific: do not copy the Windows RAM, graphics-memory or DirectX figures into a Mac requirement, and do not assume that a Windows launch option exists on macOS.
For a Mac installation, begin with the designated defaults, confirm that the computer meets the current Mac requirements, and then make only small, reversible display or graphics changes when the game itself provides them. If the game crashes or performs severely below expectations, check the current Aspyr support information before treating a Windows-style setting change as a solution.

The Steam listing publishes separate requirements for Windows, macOS and SteamOS/Linux. Use the requirements for the operating system you are actually running instead of assuming that a Windows configuration transfers unchanged.
The same listing notes that Mac and PC can be out of sync during updates or patches. A feature, fix or performance behavior visible on one platform may therefore not be available on another at the same time. When comparing reports or troubleshooting after an update, record the platform and game version first, and avoid promising cross-platform patch parity.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The game is slow everywhere
- Return to the detected defaults if you have changed several controls.
- Confirm that Civilization VI is using the intended GPU on a multi-GPU computer.
- Lower the performance-impact control one step, test the same map and repeat only if the result helps.
- Check the platform-specific requirements and close unrelated workloads that are consuming memory or graphics resources.
- On Steam for Windows, compare DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 from Steam itself, not from a desktop shortcut.
Text or map details are hard to read
- Check that the selected resolution is appropriate for the physical display and operating-system scaling.
- Compare window modes without changing resolution, then keep the mode that renders text most clearly.
- Do not assume that reducing resolution improves readability; inspect labels, tooltips and map symbols at your normal zoom.
- If you changed advanced options, restore the last known-clear configuration before making another performance change.
The game crashes or becomes unstable
- Restore the automatically selected graphics settings and test again.
- On Windows, test the other documented DirectX option through Steam while keeping the launch path consistent.
- On macOS, follow Aspyr’s default-settings guidance and verify that the computer is not below the platform’s minimum requirements.
- Do not interpret a slider change as proof that the hardware is adequate; requirements and stability are separate questions.
DirectX 11 seems selected, but the game behaves like DirectX 12
Check how you launched the game. Civilization Support specifically cautions that a desktop shortcut opens DirectX 12 even if DirectX 11 was selected as the preferred Steam option. Launch from Steam, recheck the option and repeat the comparison under identical conditions.
An update changed behavior on one computer but not another
Record whether each installation is Windows, macOS or SteamOS/Linux. Steam’s listing warns that Mac and PC may not receive updates or patches in lockstep, so platform differences can explain why the same setting produces different results at the same time.
How to make a meaningful before-and-after comparison
Without a published universal benchmark, your own controlled comparison is more useful than a copied preset. Use this checklist:
- Keep the same operating system, game build and graphics API.
- Use the same save, map area, zoom level and display resolution.
- Change exactly one setting between tests.
- Observe both motion and readability: camera movement, map redraws, turn transitions, labels and tooltips.
- Test long enough to catch pauses or instability rather than judging from the first few seconds.
- Write down the old value so you can undo a change.
This method cannot produce a universal FPS claim, but it can identify the best compromise for your computer and monitor while keeping the comparison honest.

Use Civilization VI’s automatically selected graphics settings as the baseline. If the game is too slow, make one measured reduction at a time, beginning with the documented performance controls; if the interface is hard to read, tune resolution and window mode for your own display rather than chasing a supposed universal value. Windows players should test DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 through Steam with the same workload, while Mac players should follow Aspyr’s separate default-settings guidance. The official requirements tell you whether a system is within the supported range, not what frame rate or readability you will receive.
