Best Chromebook Alternatives in 2026: Windows Laptops, MacBooks, and More

The best Chromebook alternative depends on what you need to run and how you use your laptop. Choose Windows for traditional desktop apps, specialist software, broad hardware choice, or PC gaming; choose a MacBook if macOS apps or integration with your iPhone and iPad matter most; and choose a Windows 2-in-1 if you want touch, pen, or tablet modes. Check the exact model’s apps, peripherals, configuration, and price before buying—especially with Windows on Arm.

Which Chromebook alternative fits your needs?

Option Best fit Main check
Windows laptop Traditional desktop software, specialist applications, broad hardware choice, or the wider PC game catalogue. Confirm support for the specific apps and peripherals you rely on. On Arm models, verify driver and app compatibility.
MacBook Neo Everyday browsing, writing, streaming, video calls, and mainstream productivity in macOS. It has no touchscreen; check whether its memory and ports meet your needs.
MacBook Air M5 Buyers who want a higher memory and storage tier, more connectivity, and Apple-device integration. It costs more than the Neo, and macOS may not suit Windows-specific apps or devices.
Windows 2-in-1 People replacing a convertible Chromebook who want laptop, tablet, stand, or tent use. Check that the exact configuration has the touchscreen and pen support you want; size and weight affect comfort in tablet mode.
Lightweight Windows on Arm Buyers prioritizing portability and interested in models such as the ASUS Zenbook A14 range. Verify that essential apps, assistive technology, and peripherals work on Arm.

These are broad platform tendencies, not guarantees for every laptop. A Chromebook that already handles your browser-based work may not need replacing with a premium machine. List the apps and devices you actually depend on before comparing models. Best Buy’s platform comparison and Which?’s Chromebook-versus-laptop guide offer broad consumer orientation.

When should you choose Windows?

Windows is the strongest starting point if your work depends on a desktop application, specialist tool, or game that is unavailable or unsuitable on ChromeOS. It also offers a wide range of hardware, including touchscreen laptops and convertibles. That breadth does not make every Windows laptop compatible with every app: check the software publisher’s requirements and confirm support for the exact processor, Windows edition, and connected devices.

Windows 11’s published minimum requirements include a supported 1 GHz or faster processor with at least two cores, 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of storage, UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability, and a display larger than 9 inches with at least 720p resolution. These are eligibility minimums, not a sensible performance target for demanding work. Particular apps and features may need more. Microsoft also says Windows 11 Home and Pro for personal use require an internet connection and Microsoft account during initial setup. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 requirements.

Check Windows on Arm before buying

Windows laptops use different processor architectures, and the Arm-specific caveat matters if you choose an Arm model. Microsoft says most printers are supported, including Mopria-compatible printers, but peripherals need either built-in Windows drivers or vendor-published Arm64 drivers. It advises checking with the relevant app publisher or assistive-technology vendor because support varies. This is not a blanket warning against Windows laptops: it is a compatibility check for Arm devices and the software and hardware you plan to use. Consult Microsoft’s Windows Arm-based PCs FAQ.

When does a MacBook make more sense?

A MacBook is a natural option if you want macOS applications or already use an iPhone or iPad and value continuity between Apple devices. The 2026 examples below illustrate two different tiers: an entry-level model for everyday tasks and a more capable Air configuration. Neither is a touchscreen convertible, so a MacBook will not preserve the touch-and-tablet experience of a convertible Chromebook.

MacBook Neo: everyday tasks at a lower entry point

TechRepublic’s 2026 US snapshot lists the MacBook Neo at $699 and reports a base configuration with an Apple A18 Pro chip, 8GB of unified memory, a 256GB SSD, and a 13-inch Liquid Retina display; it weighs 2.7 pounds. TechRepublic describes it as suited to browsing, writing, streaming, video calls, and mainstream productivity, while noting no touchscreen and limited USB-C connectivity. Tom’s Guide reports an 8GB memory ceiling and no Thunderbolt for its tested/configured product; verify those details against the exact current listing. Its battery test reached 13 hours 28 minutes, a Tom’s Guide test result rather than a promise of real-world runtime. MacBook Air M5: more headroom and connectivity

TechRepublic reports the MacBook Air M5 base configuration at $1,299 in its 2026 US snapshot, with 16GB of unified memory, a 512GB SSD, two Thunderbolt 4 ports, MagSafe charging, and support for up to two external displays. Apple rates it for up to 18 hours of video streaming, as reported by TechRepublic. That manufacturer-rated streaming figure is not directly comparable with Tom’s Guide’s Neo battery test: the source and workload differ. The Air’s higher configuration and port tier come at a higher price, and the same app-compatibility question applies if you rely on Windows-specific software. Source: TechRepublic.

When should you get a Windows 2-in-1?

If you use a Chromebook as a tablet as well as a laptop, a Windows convertible is the closest fit among these alternatives. Depending on the design, it can work in laptop, tablet, stand, or tent mode. Microsoft’s form-factor guidance notes that a 2-in-1 can serve as both laptop and tablet, while a traditional laptop may be more comfortable for long typing sessions or specialized software. See Microsoft’s desktop, laptop, and tablet guidance.

Do not assume every configuration includes the features you want. Confirm touchscreen support, pen compatibility, and whether a pen is included or sold separately. A convertible’s size and weight can also make it less comfortable to hold than a tablet-oriented Chromebook.

  • All-day comfort: Dell ComfortView Plus helps reduce harmful blue light emissions while preserving true-to-life color, keeping your eyes comfortable even during prolonged screen time.

  • Adaptive thermals: Built-in technology allows your PC to sense when it's on a stable surface and adjusts its power and thermals to run more efficiently.

What should you compare before leaving ChromeOS?

  • Apps and peripherals: Write down required programs, printers, accessories, and any assistive technology. Check them against the specific laptop and processor architecture.
  • Memory and storage: Compare the configuration you will actually buy, not only the model name or starting price. Consider whether your applications and files need more than the base configuration offers.
  • Screen and form factor: Decide whether you need a touchscreen, pen, convertible modes, or a particular screen size. A conventional laptop can be a better fit for extended typing.
  • Ports and displays: Check the number and type of ports, charging connection, and external-display support against your existing accessories and monitor setup. A hub may help if your chosen laptop lacks a port you need, but it is not universally necessary.
  • Battery claims: Distinguish manufacturer ratings from review tests. Runtime varies with workload, settings, and test method, so figures from different sources should not be treated as directly comparable.
  • Phone and device ecosystem: Factor in whether your phone, tablet, and other devices make Windows or macOS more convenient for you.
  • Budget and offline use: Set a spending limit for the complete configuration and consider whether your important apps and files need to work without an internet connection.

Chromebooks often suit basic browser and Android-app tasks; specialized software can change the decision. A consumer comparison is useful for orientation, but your actual app list, connected devices, and workflow should decide the platform. See Which?’s comparison.
