Need Windows desktop programs? Buy a Windows 11 laptop; the Dell XPS 13 is the closest all-purpose replacement for a light, touchscreen-friendly Chromebook. Choose the HP OmniBook X Flip 14 if you want tablet, tent and stand modes. The ASUS Zenbook A14 is the travel-weight specialist, but its Snapdragon Windows-on-Arm platform requires an application and peripheral compatibility check.

Need macOS-only software? Buy a Mac. The $699 MacBook Neo is the least expensive entry in this comparison, while the MacBook Air M5 provides substantially more memory, storage, ports and external-display capacity. Android phones work with either platform for web, cloud and messaging, but Apple’s deepest Continuity features are designed for Apple devices.

Want to reuse an old computer? ChromeOS Flex can install on certified Windows, Mac or Linux hardware and restore many ChromeOS-style features. It cannot run native Windows or macOS applications, so it is not a solution to that requirement.

Start with the software you cannot replace

A Chromebook alternative should be selected by the applications you must run, not by its resemblance to a Chromebook. Make an inventory of the exact desktop programs, plug-ins and peripherals in your workflow.

#1 Best Overall
  • Windows-only software: choose Windows 11. This is the safest route for specialist engineering, accounting, testing, enterprise and creative applications, along with the broadest printer, scanner and controller support.
  • macOS-only software: choose a MacBook. A Windows laptop or Chromebook cannot provide a native macOS application.
  • Browser, Android and cloud applications: Windows and macOS both work, but you may be paying for desktop capability you do not need.
  • Old hardware: investigate ChromeOS Flex only when web applications are sufficient and your exact computer is certified.

Check processor architecture before ordering. Snapdragon-based Windows laptops can be exceptionally light and efficient, but an unsupported driver, plug-in or older application can block an otherwise suitable workflow. Printers, docks, scanners, specialty controllers and external monitors also depend on model-specific drivers and connection standards.

Best Windows replacements for a Chromebook

Dell XPS 13: the safest general recommendation

The Dell XPS 13 is the most direct replacement when your priority is native Windows software in a compact format. The comparison’s 13.4-inch touchscreen configuration preserves the small, touch-friendly feel many Chromebook owners like while providing Windows 11 compatibility.

The cited US starting price is $699.99 (TechRepublic, 2026). Treat that as a configuration and date-specific price, not a promise that every retailer will sell the same specification. The base configuration’s 8GB of memory and 256GB SSD are adequate for light office work, browsing and streaming, but leave less room for large projects, virtual machines, photo libraries or simultaneous desktop applications. If your Chromebook habit involves keeping dozens of browser tabs open while running demanding software, select a higher-memory and larger-storage configuration.

HP OmniBook X Flip 14: the Windows 2-in-1

The OmniBook X Flip 14 is the closest fit for someone who uses a Chromebook as a tablet as often as a laptop. Its 2-in-1 hinge supports laptop, tablet, stand and tent modes, so you can type at a desk, fold the display for reading, or prop it up for video.

The cited configuration costs $929.99 in the US (TechRepublic, 2026). A 14-inch convertible gives you more workspace than a small Chromebook, but its size and weight make one-handed tablet use less comfortable. Confirm pen support, included accessories and the exact processor before purchase if handwriting or drawing is central to your routine.

ASUS Zenbook A14: for frequent travelers

The Zenbook A14 lineup starts below 2.18 pounds in the cited configurations and offers OLED displays, Snapdragon processors, up to 32GB of memory and up to a 1TB SSD (ASUS information reported by TechRepublic, 2026). The cited starting price is $1,099.99 in the US.

That low weight is attractive if your Chromebook is mainly a travel computer. Snapdragon models use Windows on Arm, so do not assume every legacy desktop application behaves like it does on an Intel- or AMD-based Windows laptop. Before buying, check the application publisher’s architecture support and confirm that your printer, scanner, dock, VPN client, plug-in and specialty controller have compatible drivers. If one unavailable driver is business-critical, choose a conventional Windows architecture instead.

Microsoft Surface Laptop: a premium Windows route

Microsoft lists the Surface Laptop at $1,199.99 for the 13-inch model, $1,419 for the 13.8-inch model and $1,699.99 for the 15-inch model in 2026 US pricing. The larger configurations provide a premium alternative when you want a polished Windows laptop without a convertible hinge.

Microsoft’s stated local-video-playback figures are up to 22.5 hours for 13-inch, 20 hours for 13.8-inch and 19 hours for 15-inch models. Its active-web-browsing claims are up to 18, 16 and 14 hours respectively. These are manufacturer results under specified test methods; your brightness, applications, network use and processor configuration will change runtime. Use them to compare the models within the range, not as a guaranteed workday.

Dell Latitude 5420 14" FHD Business Laptop Computer, Intel Quad-Core i5-1145G7, 16GB DDR4 RAM, 256GB SSD, Camera, HDMI, Windows 11 Pro (Renewed)
  • 256 GB SSD of storage.
  • Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
  • Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.

Samsung Galaxy Book: the strongest Android-specific story

If your phone is a Samsung Galaxy model, a Galaxy Book has the clearest first-party integration described in the available documentation. Samsung advertises sharing large videos and documents between Galaxy devices, remote access to photos, videos and documents stored on a Galaxy phone, and control of a phone or tablet with the Galaxy Book’s keyboard and trackpad.

These features are most useful in a Galaxy-to-Galaxy setup. Availability depends on the exact phone, tablet, PC software, account, region and current software version. Check Samsung’s compatibility list for your devices before treating any feature as a purchase requirement. Android phones from other manufacturers can still use Windows file-transfer, cloud-storage and messaging tools, but they should not be assumed to offer the same first-party experience.

MacBook choices for people who need macOS

MacBook Neo: the lower-cost entry

The MacBook Neo is listed from $699 in the comparison, making it the lowest-cost route into macOS among these choices. It is suitable when a required application is macOS-only and your workload is modest.

The base configuration starts with 8GB of memory and has no touchscreen. That is enough for ordinary browsing, documents, video calls and cloud work, but leaves less headroom for large creative projects, development environments, virtual machines or many simultaneous applications. Android phones work with a Mac for web services, cloud drives and messaging; they do not turn the Mac into a Chromebook-style Android tablet.

MacBook Air M5: more memory, storage and displays

The MacBook Air M5 starts at $1,299 in the cited US comparison. It includes 16GB of unified memory, a 512GB SSD and Thunderbolt 4, and supports up to two external displays. Those specifications make it the more comfortable choice for sustained multitasking, larger local files and a desk with multiple monitors.

There is no touchscreen, and the higher price is justified by capacity rather than a Chromebook-like tablet mode. If your choice is driven by a single macOS-only application, verify that the application’s current version supports the M5 platform and that any required plug-ins or hardware interfaces are available.

What Android users lose on a Mac

Android phones can exchange files through cloud services, USB connections and web applications, but Apple’s richest Continuity features are built around Apple hardware. Apple documents Handoff, iPhone Mirroring, iPhone Cellular Calls, Text Message Forwarding, Universal Clipboard, AirDrop and related requirements for combinations of Mac, iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Apple TV and Apple Vision Pro.

Consequently, an Android owner should buy a Mac for macOS software, hardware quality or a specific workflow—not with the expectation of Apple’s full cross-device handoff. Keep your existing Android messaging, password-manager and cloud-storage services in mind when planning the transition.

ChromeOS Flex: useful reuse, not a Windows or Mac substitute

Google says administrators can install ChromeOS Flex on Windows, Mac or Linux devices to provide many features available on ChromeOS devices. It is a practical way to extend the life of a compatible computer when your work is browser-based and the machine meets Google’s certification requirements.

  • LIGHTWEIGHT DESIGN | ONLINE COMMUNICATION: Designed with a slim, portable profile, this laptop is easy to carry for school, commuting, and travel. The 3300mAh battery works with the low-power system design to support practical daily use, while thermal optimization helps maintain quieter operation during extended tasks.

Flex differs from ChromeOS and does not provide a compatibility layer for native Windows or macOS applications. Installing it will not make an old laptop run a Windows accounting package, a Mac-only editor or a specialist desktop plug-in. Before installation, verify the exact model on Google’s certified list, back up local data and confirm that Wi-Fi, sound, sleep, touch, cameras and any required peripherals are supported.

How to choose without an expensive mistake

  1. List applications by operating-system requirement. Mark each as Windows-only, macOS-only, browser-based, Android-compatible or uncertain. Resolve the uncertain items with the software publisher before buying.
  2. Record your peripherals. Write down the model numbers of printers, scanners, docks, displays, drawing tablets, security keys, controllers and specialty hardware. Check driver and connection requirements, especially for Windows on Arm.
  3. Set a realistic memory target. The cited 8GB base configurations of the MacBook Neo and Dell XPS 13 offer less multitasking headroom than the 16GB MacBook Air M5, higher-tier Surface models or a Zenbook A14 configured with more memory.
  4. Size storage for local work. A 256GB SSD fills quickly with photographs, video, development tools and offline cloud files. Moving to 512GB or 1TB can be cheaper and less disruptive than replacing the computer later.
  5. Choose the physical design. Select the XPS 13 for a compact touchscreen, the OmniBook X Flip 14 for folding modes, the Zenbook A14 for low travel weight, or a conventional Surface Laptop, Galaxy Book or MacBook when a standard clamshell is preferable.
  6. Verify phone integration. Galaxy owners should check Samsung’s exact supported-device and regional requirements. Other Android owners should plan on generic cloud, USB and messaging workflows rather than guaranteed manufacturer-level integration.
  7. Recheck the transaction. The prices cited here are US figures from 2026 and can change with stock, configuration and promotions. Confirm the memory, storage, processor, keyboard layout, warranty and return policy on the day you order.

Moving from ChromeOS to Windows or macOS

Preserve data and accounts

Export local Chromebook files from the Downloads folder, verify that cloud files are synchronized, and make a separate copy of browser bookmarks, passwords and two-factor recovery codes. Identify which Android applications have desktop or web equivalents; installing a similarly named app is not proof that it uses the same data.

Recreate the daily workflow

Install the required desktop applications first, then drivers for printers, docks, scanners and displays. Sign in to your cloud storage and test one complete work cycle before wiping or repurposing the Chromebook. Check printing, camera permissions, microphone input, sleep/wake behavior and external-monitor resolution rather than assuming they will match ChromeOS.

Keep a fallback

For the first week, retain access to the Chromebook or another known-good computer. If a specialist application, plug-in or peripheral fails, you can continue working while the publisher supplies a compatible version or you select a different laptop architecture.

Common failure points and fixes

A Windows application installs but behaves incorrectly

Confirm whether the laptop uses Windows on Arm and whether the publisher supplies a native Arm build. Update Windows and the application, then check the publisher’s driver and plug-in notes. If a required component remains unsupported, return the laptop within its return period and choose a compatible processor platform.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A printer, scanner or dock is not recognized

Use the hardware maker’s driver for your exact Windows or macOS version, connect through the recommended port or adapter, and update the dock firmware where applicable. A generic USB connection does not guarantee support for every function, such as duplex scanning, charging or multiple displays.

Phone features are missing

Check that both devices use supported software, the same account where required, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are enabled, and the feature is offered in your region. Galaxy integration is not automatically available on every Android phone, and Apple Continuity features require the Apple device combinations Apple specifies.

The replacement feels slower than expected

Compare memory and storage, not just the processor name or starting price. An 8GB system with a nearly full 256GB SSD can feel constrained during multitasking even when the laptop is otherwise fast. Close unnecessary startup applications, keep adequate free storage and select a higher-memory configuration if your workload is sustained.

Bottom-line buying decisions

  • Choose the Dell XPS 13 for the broadest, least complicated move from Chromebook habits to Windows desktop software.
  • Choose the HP OmniBook X Flip 14 when folding tablet, tent and stand modes are essential.
  • Choose the ASUS Zenbook A14 when travel weight matters most and every required application and peripheral is confirmed compatible with Windows on Arm.
  • Choose a Samsung Galaxy Book when you already use supported Galaxy phones or tablets and want Samsung’s documented cross-device features.
  • Choose the MacBook Neo for the least expensive entry to a required macOS workflow, accepting 8GB memory and no touchscreen in the base configuration.
  • Choose the MacBook Air M5 for 16GB memory, 512GB storage, Thunderbolt 4 and up to two external displays.
  • Choose ChromeOS Flex only when reusing compatible hardware for browser-based work; it cannot run native Windows or macOS software.
