For supervised homework, Khanmigo is the strongest documented choice. It is designed as an AI tutor rather than a general-purpose chatbot: it guides a student through the reasoning instead of simply supplying an answer, connects to Khan Academy’s academic content, and lets a parent or school supervise a minor’s use. Brainly is the strongest alternative when a family wants AI explanations plus the option of help from human tutors. Both services describe moderation and age-aware support, but neither safety controls nor polished explanations guarantee factual accuracy. A child should still check important work against the assignment, textbook, teacher rubric, or another trusted source.
Which child-safe AI homework helper should you choose?
Choose Khanmigo when your priority is guided practice, adult visibility, and a tutoring experience built around school subjects. Choose Brainly when your child benefits from a combination of AI explanations and access to human tutors. The distinction matters: a general chatbot may answer a question fluently, while a tutoring product is intended to keep the learner involved in solving it.

Common Sense Media reported in 2026 that 86% of 1,032 children ages 9–17 use or interact with AI, 67% have used AI chatbots, and 38% have used AI-powered learning tools such as Khanmigo or Socratic Owl. The figures show why families need a clear supervision plan, not simply a promise that an app is “safe.”

Why a tutoring product is different from a general chatbot
Guidance instead of answer dumping
Khan Academy describes Khanmigo as an “AI-powered personal tutor and teaching assistant.” Its stated approach is that it “doesn’t just give answers. Instead, with limitless patience, it guides learners to find the answer themselves.” In practice, a parent should expect prompts, hints, questions about the student’s method, and requests to show work rather than an instant completed worksheet.
Brainly describes a complementary model: AI gives an explanation, and a real expert can intervene. That can be useful when a child is stuck after trying a problem, but it also makes it important to ask the child to explain the reasoning in their own words. A fluent explanation is not proof that every step is correct.
Supervision is a process, not a label
“Child-safe” should mean that an adult has a way to control access, understand what the child is doing, and respond when something goes wrong. It should not be read as a guarantee that an AI will never produce an unsafe, biased, or incorrect response. Khan Academy explicitly warns that AI-generated content may include errors, even in subjects such as math, and that inappropriate content is possible. Brainly’s “100% kid-safe” wording is a vendor claim; its documented monitoring and age-adjusted explanations are controls to evaluate, not independent proof of perfect safety.

Khanmigo: best documented option for supervised homework
What it does
Khanmigo covers math, humanities, coding, social studies, science and other academic subjects. Khan Academy describes coverage from elementary school through college, so the same service can support a child moving from basic practice to more advanced coursework. How a minor gets access
An individual registrant must be at least 18. A user under 18 can use Khanmigo only through one of the documented routes below:
- A linked parent or guardian account.
- A Khan Academy Districts partnership.
- A specified teacher writing-coach assignment.
Khan Academy says a parent subscription can provide access for up to 10 children under 18. The subscription price and regional availability are not stated in the material available here, so a family should confirm both before planning a household rollout.
What parents can see and what moderation does
Khan Academy’s safety documentation says a connected parent or guardian can see a child’s chat history and activity. The service uses moderation technology and can automatically email a connected adult when moderation is triggered. It also says images shared with the service are not stored under its privacy policies. These are useful accountability mechanisms, but they do not replace an adult reviewing a child’s work or discussing an upsetting interaction.

Important limitation
Khan Academy’s own warning is the right operating assumption: AI output can contain errors and inappropriate content is possible. A correct-looking algebra explanation can still contain a sign mistake; a history response can confidently blend events. Treat Khanmigo as a patient study partner, not an authority.

Brainly: AI explanations with human-tutor backup
What the service combines
Brainly presents “always-on” help from AI and human tutors across school subjects. Its described workflow lets AI explain a question, brings in a real expert when needed, and supports worksheets and review notes. That combination can suit a student who needs a quick hint first and a person’s explanation when the hint is not enough.
Age-aware and monitored interactions
Brainly says responses are adjusted to a student’s age and grade level and that interactions are monitored. Its privacy section references the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and the California Consumer Privacy Act as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA). Those references indicate the service addresses major privacy frameworks; they do not, by themselves, tell a parent exactly what data is retained, how long it is kept, or which features are available in every country.
What is not established
The available Brainly material does not establish a complete minimum-age and parental-consent policy. Before allowing a child to register, an adult should read the current account and consent terms for the child’s country, check whether a parent-managed account is required, and confirm how chat history and tutor communications are handled.
How to set up a safe homework routine
- Put the adult account first. For Khanmigo, create or use the adult account and add the child through the linked-parent route, or ask the school whether a Districts or teacher assignment applies. Do not let a minor create an adult account by entering a false birth date.
- Read the current consent and privacy screens. Check the minimum age, what activity is visible to adults, retention of chats and uploads, moderation escalation, and any country-specific limits. For Brainly, pay particular attention to the missing age-policy detail in the available product description.
- Set a purpose for each session. Tell the child to request a hint, worked example, quiz, or explanation of a concept—not a finished submission. A useful prompt is:
Ask me one question at a time and do not give the final answer until I show my work. - Require an attempt before help. Have the child paste the problem in their own words and show what they tried. This reduces accidental copying and gives the tutor context for an age-appropriate explanation.
- Verify the result. Compare the response with the assignment directions, class notes, textbook, teacher rubric, or a trusted reference. For calculations, redo the arithmetic; for essays, verify quotations and dates; for coding, run and inspect the code rather than assuming it works.
- Save the learning, not just the answer. Ask the child to write a short explanation of the method, list one remaining question, or solve a similar problem without assistance. This turns a chat into practice.
- Review activity periodically. With Khanmigo, use the parent-visible chat history and activity to spot confusion, overreliance, or inappropriate exchanges. If moderation produces an alert, read the context calmly and decide whether to pause access or contact the school.
Choosing between guided practice and human help
Choose Khanmigo when the learning process is the priority
- Your child needs prompts that keep them solving rather than copying.
- You want a documented parent-linked or school-linked access model for minors.
- You value visibility into chat history and activity.
- You want one tutor interface spanning math, science, coding, humanities and social studies.
Choose Brainly when escalation to a person matters
- Your child often needs a human explanation after an AI hint.
- You want help with worksheets and review notes in addition to conversational answers.
- You are prepared to verify the current age, consent, privacy and regional terms before creating a child account.
Use neither as an automatic answer machine
If a student is submitting AI text or solutions without understanding them, the product choice is not the main problem. Set a family rule that AI may explain, question, quiz and give feedback, while the child remains responsible for the final work. A teacher’s policy always takes precedence.

Accuracy, privacy and safety checks parents should perform
Check accuracy in proportion to the stakes
For routine practice, ask the child to verify one or two steps. For graded essays, laboratory reports, applications, health topics, or anything involving legal or financial consequences, verify every material claim with a teacher-approved or primary source. Neither service has been shown by the available evidence to be independently more accurate than the other.
Protect personal information
- Do not enter a child’s full name, address, school schedule, passwords, medical details, or another student’s private information.
- Crop worksheets so they show the question but not identifying labels, student numbers or teacher comments.
- Ask whether uploaded images are retained. Khan Academy states that shared images are not stored under its privacy policies; do not assume the same rule applies elsewhere.
- Use the adult’s email and recovery method for a parent-managed account, and enable any available security controls.
Recognize an escalation signal
Stop the session and involve an adult if the system produces sexual, violent, hateful or self-harm content, asks the child to keep the interaction secret, requests personal details, or repeatedly insists on an answer that conflicts with the textbook or teacher. Save enough context to explain what happened, then use the service’s reporting or support process.
Common homework scenarios
“I do not understand this equation.”
With Khanmigo, ask for a hint and then a check of each line of the child’s work. Have the child solve a parallel equation afterward. With Brainly, ask the AI for an explanation at the child’s grade level; if the method remains unclear, use the human-tutor option described by the service. In either case, substitute the child’s own numbers into the final step to catch arithmetic errors.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →“Write my history paragraph.”
Ask either service for an outline, questions that test understanding, or feedback on a draft. The child should verify names, dates and quotations against class materials and write the final paragraph in their own voice. A polished paragraph that contains an invented citation is not successful homework.
Best Value
“My code does not run.”
Provide the error message without personal data and request a diagnosis, not a replacement project. Test one change at a time, explain why it works, and keep a copy of the original code. The child should be able to describe the bug and the fix to a teacher.
What the evidence does—and does not—show
The documented differences are about product design and supervision: Khanmigo specifies adult-linked or school-linked access and parent-visible activity; Brainly describes monitored, age-adjusted AI support with human tutors. The available material does not establish a controlled comparison of factual accuracy, a guaranteed absence of inappropriate content, or improved grades. Vendor statements such as “100% kid-safe,” “always-on,” or claims about tutoring quality should therefore be read as product descriptions, not independent outcomes.
Availability can also vary. Khanmigo’s school route depends on a Districts partnership or a specified teacher assignment, and Brainly’s regional terms are not detailed in the available description. Confirm the current rules for the child’s country, school and age before relying on a feature.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBottom line for families
Khanmigo is the best-documented fit for supervised homework because it is built around guided tutoring and explicitly connects minors to a parent, guardian or school account with visible activity. Brainly is the better fit when access to human tutors is as important as AI assistance. Whichever you choose, keep an adult in the loop, require the child to show work, and verify important answers. A child-safe setup reduces risk; it does not turn generated text into unquestionable truth.
