Stockfish is the best-supported chess engine to start with on a Raspberry Pi 5: its official download page offers a Linux ARM64 build, matching the Pi 5’s 64-bit Arm platform. That makes it a credible, practical choice—not a proven speed or strength winner on the Pi 5. Stockfish is an engine, not a chessboard app, so you will also need a compatible graphical user interface (GUI) if you want to play or analyze through a board on screen.
Which chess engine should you use on a Raspberry Pi 5?
Stockfish is the clearest default
Stockfish is free, implements the Universal Chess Interface (UCI), and provides an official Linux ARM64 download. Its download page currently labels the release “Stockfish 19” and says its universal binaries detect optimal CPU features automatically. Check the official download page for the current release, then select the Linux ARM64 option appropriate to your system.

The Pi 5 has a 2.4GHz quad-core 64-bit Arm Cortex-A76 processor, so ARM64 is the relevant download category. The architecture match supports trying Stockfish; it does not establish how fast a particular binary will run on your device.
Why this is not a measured ranking
Available evidence does not establish a controlled Raspberry Pi 5 comparison of Stockfish against Leela Chess Zero, Maia, or other engines. There are no reliable Pi 5-specific nodes-per-second or playing-strength figures here. Treat Stockfish as the best-documented starting recommendation, not a verified universal winner.
#1 Best Overall
- Raspberry Pi 5 with 8GB RAM: Model SC1112 featuring a quad-core ARM Cortex-A76 processor running at 2.4GHz. Enhanced Connectivity: Includes dual 4K micro HDMI ports, USB-C power input, and high-speed USB 3.0 ports. PCIe Expansion Support: FPC connector enables M.2 NVMe SSDs when using compatible adapters. Fast Storage Options: Works with microSD cards for booting, or optional NVMe storage for advanced projects. Built for Projects & Learning: Ideal for programming, home labs, DIY electronics, automation, and Linux-based development.
For context, the Stockfish project reported that Stockfish 17.1 gained “up to 20 points” of Elo over its predecessor in the project’s testing, in an announcement dated 2025-03-30. That is a developer-reported engine-version result; it is not a Pi 5 benchmark or an independent comparison of engines on the Pi.
Engine versus chess GUI: what you need
A chess engine calculates moves and evaluations. A GUI supplies the visible board and controls for starting games or analysis. Stockfish does not include a graphical interface. The Stockfish project and its getting-started documentation explain the engine-and-GUI workflow and list computer GUI options.

After installing a GUI, add Stockfish as a UCI engine by following that GUI’s instructions and pointing it to the Stockfish executable. The exact menu names and installation steps depend on the GUI you choose; do not assume every desktop chess program supports the same setup.

- Install a supported 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS. Raspberry Pi lists 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS as compatible with Pi 5. The Pi 5 product page says current Raspberry Pi OS (Trixie) and legacy Bookworm work, while older releases do not. Check the Raspberry Pi OS downloads page before installing because releases change.
- Download Stockfish for Linux ARM64. Visit the Stockfish download page, verify the current release, and choose the Linux ARM64 build suited to your operating system and CPU. Follow the download’s instructions for making the executable runnable if needed.
- Install a compatible GUI separately. Choose a computer chess GUI that supports UCI engines and follow its installation instructions. Stockfish’s getting-started guide describes adding an engine to a GUI.
- Register Stockfish in the GUI. Use the GUI’s engine settings to locate the Stockfish executable and add it as a UCI engine. Start a game or analysis session to confirm the interface can launch it.
- Set a sensible analysis limit. Begin with modest time or search limits, then adjust to your needs. There is no Pi 5-specific recommended setting established here, so treat the GUI’s controls as practical options rather than tested prescriptions.
Power and cooling for sustained analysis
Raspberry Pi recommends a high-quality 5V/5A USB-C supply for Pi 5. It says an underpowered supply may cause problems; with a 3A supply, downstream USB current is limited to 600mA. This matters especially if your build uses USB peripherals. Check the Raspberry Pi 5 product page for the current power guidance.

- CanaKit 45W PD Power Supply for the Raspberry Pi 5
- Set of Heat Sinks
Raspberry Pi says ordinary use can work without added cooling, but a heavy continuous workload can cause thermal throttling. Long engine analysis is a reason to consider cooling, not evidence that every Pi 5 chess setup requires it. The optional Raspberry Pi Active Cooler is a clip-on heatsink with a temperature-controlled blower. Raspberry Pi’s cooling guidance explains the broader thermal behavior.
