Current operating systems, browsers and security software are part of the defense. A VPN adds an encrypted tunnel from your device to a VPN server, making it harder for someone on the same coffee-shop, airport or hotel network to inspect unencrypted traffic or tamper with connections. It does not inspect every file for malware, decide whether a login page is genuine or recover an account after a password has been stolen.
What a VPN can and cannot hide

DNS-leak protection
DNS requests can reveal which domains a device is looking up even when other traffic uses a tunnel. Choose a service and app configuration that keep DNS requests inside the VPN path. Use a leak-checking website before handling sensitive work, and repeat the check after changing protocol or network. Internet works only when the VPN is off
Confirm that the device clock is correct, the app has permission to create a VPN profile, and another VPN or security filter is not competing for the same connection. Reinstalling a damaged profile can help, but export or record any settings you need before removing it.
Speed is too slow
