For U.S. shoppers, the Google Pixel 10a is a well-rounded Android starting point, the Motorola Moto G (2026) targets tighter budgets, and the iPhone 17e is the option to compare if you want iOS. Prices and stock change, so check the unlocked price, storage, and carrier compatibility before buying.

Which cheap phone should you buy?
Google Pixel 10a: the balanced Android choice
The Pixel 10a is the natural starting point if you can spend around $500 and want an Android phone with a strong camera experience. Tom’s Guide reported a $499 price in its 2026 guide and measured 15 hours 16 minutes in its battery test. TechRadar praises its camera experience, while cautioning that Pixel 9a owners have little reason to upgrade. Check the current price and storage configuration before comparing it with other phones.
Motorola Moto G (2026): a lower-budget, battery-focused option
Tom’s Guide measured 19 hours 10 minutes for the Moto G (2026), the longest result among the three phones with figures listed here. That is a useful sign for buyers who value endurance, but not a promise of how long the phone will last in their routine. The same guide notes limited graphics performance, slow wired charging, and only two Android-version updates for Motorola’s model. Confirm the unlocked price rather than assuming it is under $200.

Apple iPhone 17e: for buyers who want iOS
If you prefer Apple’s operating system, consider the iPhone 17e separately rather than comparing it only on Android-phone terms. TechRadar names it its best cheap iPhone but says it is not a slam-dunk bargain. Tom’s Guide measured 12 hours 35 minutes in its battery test. Apple’s product page is a current product reference; check Apple’s current price and storage configuration for a direct value comparison.
How to choose by budget and platform
- Near $500, Android: Start with the Pixel 10a if camera experience and all-around use are priorities.
- Tighter budget: Consider the Moto G (2026) if its live unlocked price fits your limit and you value battery life more than graphics performance or fast wired charging.
- iOS: Compare the iPhone 17e against your budget and storage needs; it is a distinct platform choice, not a direct substitute for the cheapest Android models.
“Cheap” covers more than one price bracket: TechRadar distinguishes affordable phones under $500 from cheap phones at $300 or less. Treat those as useful budget frames, not guarantees that every recommended phone is currently available below a given ceiling. Carrier promotions can obscure the total cost, so compare unlocked prices first.

What to check before buying
Price, storage, and unlocked status
Compare the total unlocked price for the exact storage configuration you want. A temporary carrier offer may require a qualifying plan, trade-in, or installment commitment, so do not treat its advertised amount as the phone’s general price. Prices and inventory move quickly.
Camera, display, and performance
Consider the photos you take, how often you use the phone outdoors, and whether you play demanding games. Budget phones make trade-offs: a strong camera reputation does not establish display quality or gaming performance, and a bright-looking display does not settle camera quality. The Moto G (2026), for example, has a specific graphics-performance limitation reported by Tom’s Guide.
Rank #3
- Compatibility: Compatible with T-Mobile, Metro, Boost, Mint, Ultra, Ting, and Consumer Cellular. If your carrier is not listed, please confirm compatibility with your preferred carrier. This device is 4G/LTE only and does not support band 71 or 5G. This device is not compatible with networks like AT&T, Cricket, Verizon, or Tracfone and does not include a SIM card.
- All of the Essentials: The Unnecto Bolt One has a 5" screen, 5MP main camera and 2MP front facing camera.
- Connect Everywhere: Bluetooth 4.2, Wi-Fi, GPS, and USB Type C ensure that you can connect however you need.
- Software: Android 14 Go runs in parallel with the 2GB of RAM and 1.3 GHz Quad core processor.
- Customizable Storage: with 32GB of internal storage and an additional 512GB of expandable storage with a microSD card, the Bolt One offers the flexibility to expand your device's capacity, providing additional space for photos, videos, and files.
Battery and charging
Reviewer battery tests are useful for comparing phones tested under the same publisher’s procedure, but your screen brightness, signal, apps, and usage change real-world endurance. Also check charging speed and method: Tom’s Guide specifically identifies slow wired charging as a Moto G (2026) drawback.
Software support and durability
Check how many operating-system upgrades and security updates the manufacturer commits to, and how long the phone is expected to receive them. Tom’s Guide reports two Android-version updates for Motorola’s Moto G (2026); do not infer a longer commitment from that figure. Compare physical durability and warranty terms for the exact model and market rather than assuming all affordable phones are equally protected.

Carrier compatibility
Before ordering, confirm the precise model supports your carrier’s network bands and activation requirements. Compatibility can differ by model variant and carrier; an unlocked label alone does not establish that every phone will work fully on every U.S. network.
