Captured Steam listings in 2026 put three of them at $14.99, one at $19.99 and one at $24.99 before temporary regional discounts.
These are not interchangeable “cheap Soulslikes.” Their cameras, combat rhythms, exploration structures and narrative priorities are very different. The guide below separates those differences so you can pick the game that matches the experience you actually want rather than buying on atmosphere alone.

How to choose among these five
“Gothic” can mean medieval dark fantasy, cosmic horror, industrial horrorpunk or simply a bleak visual palette. Camera perspective changes the feel just as much: third-person games make spacing and animation readability central, first-person games make movement and weapon reach feel immediate, and isometric games let you read the whole arena while managing a build.
- Pick Blade of Darkness if you want the most traditional third-person melee experience and the sense of an older action-adventure design.
- Pick ELDERBORN if you prefer first-person speed, aggressive movement and a compact campaign you can finish in several focused sessions.
- Pick Morbid if Lovecraftian horror, ranged weapons, perks and resource management matter more than a medieval setting.
- Pick Fall of Light if you want a story-led dungeon crawl in which timing, puzzles and a companion are as important as defeating enemies.
- Pick Eldest Souls if you want to fight demanding bosses one encounter at a time and enjoy pixel-art presentation rather than long stretches of exploration.
Blade of Darkness: deliberate third-person melee
What makes it different
Blade of Darkness is the closest match here for someone imagining a classic dark-fantasy action game with a behind-the-character camera. Steam describes it as a hardcore fantasy action-adventure with unique combat mechanics and role-playing elements that helped pioneer the “soulsborne” genre. That heritage is important: the appeal is deliberate positioning, commitment to attacks and learning how encounters behave, not a lightweight hack-and-slash loop.
The third-person view gives you a clear read on your character, enemy spacing and incoming attacks. In a game built around melee timing, that makes the camera part of the challenge: you need to keep threats in view while choosing when to swing, defend or reposition. Expect combat to reward patience and observation rather than button mashing.
Who should play it
- Old-school combat fans: The presentation and design lineage suit players who enjoy systems that feel less streamlined than modern action RPGs.
- Replay-minded players: Character selection gives you a reason to revisit the campaign and approach fights through different roles.
- Dark-fantasy readers: Gore and a grim medieval tone are central to its identity rather than a decorative side theme.
Choose it over ELDERBORN if you want a measured third-person perspective; choose it over Eldest Souls if exploration and a full action-adventure journey matter more than a sequence of boss encounters.
ELDERBORN: a short, fast first-person slasher
Combat and campaign shape
ELDERBORN translates the Souls-like idea into first person. Steam lists 11 weapons, a hand-crafted world and an 8–10 hour single-playthrough length. That makes it the most focused recommendation in the group: you are buying a compact campaign rather than a sprawling role-playing time sink.
First-person melee changes how you process danger. You read attacks through enemy motion and sound while using movement and weapon reach to create openings. The game’s emphasis on brutal combat and mobility makes it a natural fit for players who want to stay active, circle threats and keep momentum instead of waiting behind a shield.

- The Unkindled Dice Set features 8 engraved, polyhedral, resin dice, perfect for bringing the dangers of your Dark Souls roleplaying campaigns to life…or death.
- Forged in the flames of despair and presented in a sleeved, magnetic collector’s box featuring the iconic YOU DIED message, these luxury dice capture the flickering glow of the bonfire beneath their glassy surface. Will they be a beacon of hope in the darkness?
- Time to dice with death and let the bonfire guide your fate. Embrace the darkness and roll with the flame…
Best reasons to buy
- You want speed: Its first-person presentation and movement-focused combat are a better fit than the slower, more methodical feel associated with many third-person Soulslikes.
- You want a defined finish line: The listed 8–10 hour length is useful if you have limited time or prefer replaying a compact game.
- You want weapon variety without an enormous catalog: Eleven weapons provide meaningful choices while keeping the campaign readable.
Its short length is a feature for some players and a limitation for others. If you are looking for extensive exploration, companion storytelling or a large world, Fall of Light is the better direction. If you want a concentrated burst of dark-fantasy violence, ELDERBORN is the clearest match.
Morbid: The Seven Acolytes: Lovecraftian isometric horror
Systems and atmosphere
Morbid: The Seven Acolytes is the most overtly horror-focused option. It uses an isometric viewpoint and combines melee weapons with guns, boss encounters and perk-based leveling. Its systems also track health, stamina and sanity, so survival is not only about landing attacks: you must manage several resources while dealing with grotesque enemies and pressure from the setting.
The developer description on Steam calls it a “Horrorpunk Action RPG” filled with Lovecraftian horrors and Cronenbergian gore, and presents it as an especially gruesome interpretation of the isometric Souls-like format. That combination separates it from the medieval fantasy of Blade of Darkness and the first-person slasher approach of ELDERBORN. The visual and thematic target is body horror, cosmic dread and a harsher science-fiction-meets-punk sensibility.
Why the isometric view matters
An isometric camera lets you see more of an encounter at once. That helps with reading groups of enemies, planning routes and deciding when to spend stamina or use a ranged weapon. It also creates a different relationship with character control: you are directing a fighter through an arena from above rather than judging every strike from the character’s eyes.
Who gets the most from it
- Horror-first players: Choose it when grotesque imagery and Lovecraftian themes are the primary attraction.
- Build tinkerers: Perk leveling gives progression decisions beyond simply finding a stronger sword.
- Players who want ranged options: Guns change how you open fights and manage distance compared with the all-melee focus of the other recommendations.
The captured Steam listing shows a Mostly Positive rating of 75% from 966 reviews, lower than the Very Positive listings for Blade of Darkness and ELDERBORN but still indicating a broadly favorable reception. Treat that figure as a snapshot of the store page, not a permanent score.

Fall of Light: Darkest Edition: story, puzzles and a companion
A different kind of Souls-like
Fall of Light: Darkest Edition is a story-driven dungeon crawler set in a world consumed by Darkness. Its identity comes from the things around combat: environmental puzzles, exploration and the responsibility of protecting a companion named Aether. If your ideal dark-fantasy game includes a reason to move through a ruined place, not just a series of fights, this is the most narrative-oriented choice.

- Official Steamforged Games Dark Souls: The Roleplaying Game miniatures featuring iconic characters, creatures, and enemies inspired by the acclaimed fantasy game series
- Compatible with Dark Souls: The Roleplaying Game and suitable for use in a variety of fantasy tabletop roleplaying adventures and miniature-based encounters
- Highly detailed unpainted miniatures provide an excellent canvas for hobbyists who enjoy assembling, painting, and customizing fantasy figures
- Perfect for players, game masters, collectors, and miniature enthusiasts looking to create immersive tabletop adventures and memorable battle scenes
- Expand your collection with a variety of character and creature miniatures that bring the atmospheric world of Dark Souls to life on the tabletop
Combat emphasizes defense, parrying and perfect timing. The listing also identifies 20 battle stances and 10 weapon classes, which gives you room to adapt your approach instead of relying on one universal attack pattern. Those options matter because protecting Aether adds another consideration to encounters: positioning and threat control are not purely about your own survival.
Trade-offs to understand
Steam’s captured listing shows Mixed reviews, with 56% of 202 reviews positive. That is a materially weaker storefront reception than the other four games in this selection. The rating does not explain every individual criticism, but it is a useful signal to set expectations: choose Fall of Light for its story, puzzles, companion dynamic and stance variety, not because it has the strongest aggregate review score.
It is the best fit for players who value atmosphere and exploration enough to accept uneven edges. If your priority is highly concentrated boss combat, Eldest Souls is a safer match. If you want the most established hardcore melee feel, start with Blade of Darkness instead.
Eldest Souls: pixel-art boss encounters
Structure and challenge
Eldest Souls is a pixel-art, isometric Soulslike built around fast-paced and brutally challenging boss encounters. Its structure is more focused than a traditional action RPG: the bosses are the main event, so the appeal comes from learning patterns, refining movement and improving your execution over repeated attempts.
The isometric presentation keeps the arena visible while preserving the intensity of a high-difficulty fight. This makes it a strong choice if you enjoy games where each victory feels like a solved combat problem rather than the result of simply out-leveling an enemy.
Expansion value
The free “Depths of the Forgotten” expansion adds a region, three bosses, weapons, weapon customisation and a new ability, according to the Steam page. That is substantial extra material for a game whose core appeal is encounter mastery. It also broadens the reasons to return after completing the original set of challenges.

Choosing by camera perspective
Third person: Blade of Darkness
A behind-the-character camera gives you visual context for spacing, animation and the surrounding arena. It is the natural choice if you want an action-adventure feel and prefer seeing your chosen hero on screen.
First person: ELDERBORN
First person puts weapon reach and enemy movement directly in front of you. It tends to feel more immediate and physical, especially when mobility is a major part of the combat loop.
Isometric: Morbid or Eldest Souls
An isometric view reveals more of the battlefield at once. Morbid uses that space for mixed melee-and-gun combat, resource management and exploration, while Eldest Souls uses it to frame demanding boss arenas.
Dungeon-crawler view: Fall of Light
Fall of Light’s perspective supports exploration and puzzle navigation as much as direct fighting. It is the pick when the route through the world matters alongside the battles.
Choosing by combat priority
- Most deliberate melee: Blade of Darkness.
- Most mobile and aggressive: ELDERBORN.
- Most system-heavy: Morbid, because health, stamina, sanity, perks, guns and melee weapons all affect decisions.
- Most timing-and-defense focused: Fall of Light, with parries, perfect timing and multiple stances.
- Most boss-centric: Eldest Souls.
These labels describe emphasis, not a difficulty ranking. All five expect you to learn enemy behavior and pay attention to positioning, but they distribute that learning differently. A player who dislikes repeated boss attempts may prefer Fall of Light’s exploration and puzzles; a player who enjoys mastery through repetition may prefer Eldest Souls.

Price, sales and what “cheap” means here
The captured list prices range from $14.99 to $24.99. Blade of Darkness, ELDERBORN and Fall of Light: Darkest Edition were listed at $14.99; Eldest Souls was $19.99; and Morbid: The Seven Acolytes was $24.99. Those are useful comparison points, but Steam pricing is regional and promotional.
Sale snapshots illustrate how sharply the cost can change: Morbid appeared at $3.74 and Fall of Light at $1.49 during temporary promotions. A sale price is not recurring, and the exact discount may not appear in every country. Verify the current store listing, currency and edition before you decide that one game is cheaper than another.
The evidence for this list covers digital Steam listings. It does not establish physical editions, boxed extras, manuals, soundtracks or collectibles, so those should not be assumed when calculating value.
