There is no single best Character.AI replacement. Choose according to what you want to keep: Kindroid is the clearest fit for building one highly specified companion, Nomi is aimed at continuity across short-, medium-, and long-term memories, and NovelAI or AI Dungeon make more sense when your priority is interactive fiction rather than relationship-style chat. Character.AI itself remains the better fit if you want a large public character ecosystem and are comfortable with its changing plans and safety rules.
This guide separates companion chat, character creation, collaborative roleplay, story generation, and text adventures. It also explains what each service actually says about memory, age requirements, content controls, plans, and moving characters between platforms.

Which Character.AI alternative should you choose?
Start with the job, not the app name. “Roleplay” can mean an ongoing relationship with one companion, a multi-character scene, a branching adventure, or co-writing a story. Those formats need different memory systems and controls.

| Service | Best match | Memory information stated by the service | Character control or format | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Character.AI | Public character discovery and general roleplay | Story Memory and pinned messages are available to all users; automatic Facts and additional memory management vary by subscription. Facts can be copied into a new chat. | Write with or roleplay as original Characters in an interactive entertainment platform. | Users must be at least 13, or 16 in Europe; teen protections and age-assurance procedures apply. |
| Kindroid | Designing a particular companion with extensive personal specifications | The official page describes long-term memory. | Create a “Kin” with a chosen name, personality, backstory, appearance, and voice; text, voice, video calls, and group chats are listed. | The official page says users must be 18 or older. |
| Nomi | Continuing conversations and immersive roleplay | The official page describes short-, medium-, and long-term memory and says it can recall immersive roleplay. | Companion-style conversations and roleplay. | Memory descriptions are vendor claims, not an independent head-to-head benchmark. |
| NovelAI | Collaborative story writing | Not stated in the reviewed official description. | Presented by its maker as a storyteller rather than a companion service. | Do not assume persistent relationship memory or a public companion roster. |
| AI Dungeon | Branching, game-like text adventures | Not stated in the reviewed official description. | Presented as an AI text-adventure game. | Its adventure structure is not the same as a long-term companion chat. |
The table shows why a universal ranking would mislead. A service can be excellent for an authored adventure and unsuitable for remembering personal preferences over months.

Best alternatives by what you want to preserve
Choose Kindroid for a deeply specified custom companion
Kindroid’s official description is unusually explicit about setup: “You create a character, called a Kin, and choose its name, personality, backstory, appearance and voice.” That makes it a strong candidate when the defining feature you want to preserve is control over one character’s identity rather than browsing a community catalogue.
The same page lists text, voice, video calls, group chats, and long-term memory. Those features point to a companion model with several conversation modes, not merely a single text box. If your roleplay depends on a carefully written backstory, a consistent speaking style, or a defined visual and vocal presentation, this is the most direct match in the reviewed options.
Do not turn “long-term memory” into a guarantee that every detail will be recalled forever. Memory depends on what the system stores, how it retrieves information, the length and topic of a conversation, and changes to the service. Keep a concise character bible and restate critical facts when a scene depends on them. The official page also says users must be 18 or older, so it is not an option for younger users.

Choose Nomi when continuity across roleplay is the priority
Nomi’s official page describes short-, medium-, and long-term memory. It specifically says memory can cover preferences and quirks as well as continuing to recall immersive roleplay. That makes Nomi a logical candidate if your frustration with a chat service is that a character loses the relationship context or a previous storyline between conversations.
These are the vendor’s descriptions, not results from an independently published memory test. Before committing to a long campaign, check how you can inspect, correct, or delete saved information, and test a few facts that matter to your scenario. A useful trial is to establish a preference, continue the conversation later, and then ask for the detail without repeating it. Treat the result as an observation of your account and current version, not a permanent guarantee.
Choose NovelAI for writing rather than a simulated relationship
NovelAI calls itself a storyteller. That framing matters: the central task is generating and extending fiction with you, not maintaining a companion persona that represents an ongoing relationship. It is a sensible choice for scenes with a narrator, multiple invented characters, or prose that you want to revise and steer.
Use it when you want control over plot direction, tone, and narrative viewpoint. Do not select it solely because you expect the same kind of persistent personal memory advertised by companion-oriented services; the reviewed official description does not establish that feature.

Choose AI Dungeon for interactive, branching adventures
AI Dungeon describes itself as an AI text-adventure game. Its game framing suits readers who want to make choices, encounter consequences, and explore a scenario that branches like an adventure rather than chatting with one stable companion.
It can be a better fit for a campaign with locations, quests, and player decisions. It should not be ranked as a like-for-like replacement if your main requirement is a character that remembers your preferences and relationship history across ordinary conversations; the reviewed official description does not make that claim.
Stay with Character.AI when discovery and a public roster matter most
Character.AI describes its service as “an interactive entertainment platform that allows you to write your own stories, roleplay with original Characters, and immerse yourself in new worlds.” Its distinctive advantage is the combination of creating characters and finding public ones made by other users. If discovering many interpretations of a character is more important than owning a carefully structured memory system, switching may remove the feature you value most.
Its own memory tools have also expanded. A May 2026 guide describes Story Memory, pinned messages, and automatically captured Facts. Story Memory and pins are available to all users, while Facts and additional memory management vary by subscription. Facts can be copied into a new chat, which gives you a manual way to carry essential context even when a conversation changes.

How memory works in practice
Separate visible notes from automatic recall
There are at least four different things people call “memory”:
- Story or scenario notes: instructions that define the current setting, cast, or plot.
- Pinned messages: selected conversation material kept available for later turns.
- Automatic facts: details a service extracts from chats without you writing each entry.
- Long-term retrieval: information selected from an older conversation and inserted into a new response.
A service can support one category without supporting the others. Ask whether you can see, edit, delete, or export memories, whether they apply in a new chat, and whether they consume a plan allowance.
Character.AI’s current memory controls
Character.AI’s May 2026 documentation says Story Memory and pinned messages are available to all users. It describes Facts as automatically captured information and says access to Facts and additional memory management varies by subscription. The practical workflow is to keep a compact, authoritative set of facts, pin only information that must remain in the active context, and copy important Facts into a new chat when you intentionally restart a story.
Rank #3
Because the company can change feature access, open the memory controls in your own account before planning a long project. A feature listed in a help page may be limited by plan, region, rollout status, or a later policy update.
Kindroid and Nomi: strong stated goals, no shared benchmark
Kindroid’s page states that it offers long-term memory; Nomi’s page states that it uses short-, medium-, and long-term memory and can recall immersive roleplay. Those descriptions make both candidates worth testing for continuity, but they do not establish that either one remembers every detail, outperforms the other in all contexts, or retains information indefinitely.
For a fair personal test, create the same short scenario in each service, introduce five facts, continue on another day, and ask about the facts in a different order. Record which details are correct, which are invented, and how easily you can correct an error. Do not put sensitive personal information into a test account simply to measure recall.
Custom characters: what to define before you start
A convincing character is more than a name and a catchphrase. Prepare a one-page specification that separates facts from performance instructions:
- Identity: name, age range where appropriate, role, location, and relationship to the player.
- Personality: motivations, boundaries, strengths, flaws, humor, and conflict style.
- Backstory: only events that should influence present behavior; avoid an undifferentiated biography.
- Voice: sentence length, vocabulary, formality, recurring expressions, and topics the character avoids.
- World rules: technology, magic, institutions, time period, and facts that must remain consistent.
- Scene rules: whether the character narrates actions, asks questions, controls side characters, or waits for the player’s choice.
Kindroid’s official setup explicitly covers name, personality, backstory, appearance, and voice. On a roster-based service, you may have less control over the original definition, so save a copy of any public character description you are allowed to use and rewrite it in your own words when creating a private version.

Companion conversation
This format emphasizes an ongoing relationship, personal preferences, and continuity between sessions. Kindroid and Nomi are the closest matches among the reviewed alternatives because their official pages focus on custom companions and memory. Test how the service handles corrections, forgotten details, and a new conversation before investing in a long-running storyline.
Multi-character or group scenes
Group roleplay needs clear turn-taking and distinct character identities. Kindroid’s official page lists group chats. If you use any service for a group scene, keep a cast list with each character’s goal and speech style; otherwise, similar voices and conflicting instructions can make the scene unstable.
Collaborative fiction
Storytelling tools are better when you want prose, narration, and plot control. NovelAI’s storyteller positioning fits this job. Define the narrator’s tense and viewpoint, maintain a short continuity ledger, and treat generated text as a draft that you can edit.
Branching adventure
AI Dungeon’s text-adventure framing fits choice-driven play. Write the player’s objective and constraints before starting, then make decisions rather than trying to sustain a relationship simulation. A campaign log helps you recover if the generated story contradicts an earlier event.

Character.AI requirements and age assurance
Character.AI’s Safety Center says users must be at least 13, or 16 in Europe, and describes additional protections for teens. Its age-assurance FAQ says the service first uses account and activity signals. If it classifies an adult as under 18, the person may choose selfie verification through Persona; an ID may be requested as a final step if the selfie is inconclusive. This is the company’s stated process, not an independent audit of privacy or accuracy.
Kindroid’s age rule
Kindroid’s official page says users must be 18 or older. Do not bypass that requirement by entering a false age. For Nomi, NovelAI, and AI Dungeon, check the current terms and onboarding screen yourself; the reviewed pages do not establish a single cross-service age policy.
Content rules are not interchangeable
There is no reliable basis in the reviewed material for calling any option “no filter.” Moderation, allowed topics, account enforcement, and age gates can differ by product and change over time. Read the current safety and acceptable-use rules before moving a sensitive roleplay project, and avoid assuming that a character prompt can override platform policy.
Minimize personal data
Memory features are useful because they retain information, which also makes the information worth protecting. Do not provide passwords, financial details, identity numbers, private contact data, or another person’s confidential information. Use fictionalized details for experiments and delete saved memories or chats when the service provides that control.

Availability and pricing change frequently, so check the service’s current web and mobile listings and the checkout region you will actually use. Character.AI currently describes Free, lite, and c.ai+ tiers. Its September 2026 help pages say lite includes a daily allowance of premium chat styles, fewer ads, and more memory pins, while c.ai+ includes the full memory suite. The company says prices vary by country; there is no responsible universal price to print here.
Best Value
For every alternative, verify five items before subscribing:
- Whether the features you need are available on the web, iOS, Android, or only one of those platforms.
- Message, generation, voice, video, or group-chat allowances and how they reset.
- Which memory controls are included in the free tier and which require payment.
- Whether a subscription is monthly, annual, or subject to local taxes and currency conversion.
- How to cancel, export, delete, or correct your account data.
A free account can be enough to evaluate conversation quality. Do not pay solely for a “memory” label until you have tested whether the controls match your workflow.
Can you move Character.AI characters to another app?
A July 27, 2026 commercial comparison says there is no direct export path, but that statement was not independently confirmed in official Character.AI documentation reviewed here. Treat migration as a manual process unless your account currently shows an export function.
Before leaving, copy material you own or are permitted to reuse:
- Write a neutral character sheet covering identity, personality, backstory, voice, boundaries, and world rules.
- Copy your essential Story Memory, pins, or Facts into that sheet rather than relying on a transcript alone.
- Remove private information and any text belonging to another creator that you do not have permission to reproduce.
- Rebuild the character in the new service and run a short continuity test before starting a major campaign.
Expect differences in formatting, moderation, memory retrieval, and response style. A successful manual recreation is not the same as transferring the original internal state.
A practical decision process
- Define the primary job. Choose companion continuity, a custom persona, public-character discovery, collaborative fiction, or a branching adventure.
- List must-have memory behaviors. Specify whether you need editable notes, automatic facts, recall in a new chat, or merely a campaign log.
- Set your age and policy boundaries. Eliminate services whose stated age requirement or content rules do not fit your situation.
- Run the same small scenario. Introduce several facts, continue later, correct one mistake, and test a second character or scene if group play matters.
- Inspect controls before paying. Confirm memory visibility, deletion, usage caps, platform access, local price, and cancellation.
- Keep a portable character bible. Store the facts that matter outside the chat service so a policy change or account problem does not erase your work.
If the test centers on a designed companion, begin with Kindroid or Nomi. If it centers on prose or game decisions, begin with NovelAI or AI Dungeon. If the public roster is the irreplaceable feature, Character.AI may still be the right choice, with its current plan and safety limits understood.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best free Character.AI alternative?
No single service is established as best for every free user. Compare the free tier’s current memory controls, message or generation limits, ads, age rules, and platform access in your region; a storyteller or text-adventure service may fit better than a companion app even when both have free access.
Which Character.AI alternative has the best memory?
Kindroid and Nomi are the strongest candidates from the official feature descriptions: Kindroid states that it offers long-term memory, while Nomi describes short-, medium-, and long-term memory for preferences and immersive roleplay. These are vendor claims rather than independent comparative results, so test the exact memories you need.
Is there a Character.AI alternative with no filter?
The reviewed sources do not establish a genuinely unrestricted option. Content rules and enforcement differ and can change, so read each service’s current safety policy instead of relying on a “no filter” label.
Can I move my Character.AI characters to another app?
A July 27, 2026 commercial comparison reported no direct export path, but that point was not independently confirmed in official documentation reviewed here. Plan on manually copying a permitted character sheet, memory notes, and world rules, then rebuilding and testing the character.
