There is no single best ceramic BBQ for every buyer. The right choice depends on how many people you cook for, how much space you have, which cooking methods you want, and how much weight you give to warranty terms. This guide gives you a framework for comparing ceramic kamado grills on those points, using published manufacturer material from Big Green Egg, Kamado Joe, and Ideal Home’s 2024 comparison. It is not a hands-on review, and it does not rank models by measured performance.
What a ceramic kamado grill is
A ceramic kamado grill is a charcoal-fired cooker with a thick ceramic body, a hinged dome lid, and adjustable airflow through vents at the top and bottom. Because the walls hold heat and the airflow is controlled, the cooker can run low and slow for hours or reach high temperatures for searing. Big Green Egg describes its cooker as a ceramic oven that uses natural charcoal and live fire, with its shape and airflow supporting temperature control. Big Green Egg’s own explainer on how the Egg works sets out that design, although it is the manufacturer’s description rather than an independent test of heat retention or fuel use.

“Kamado” is a category name, not a guarantee of construction. Kamado Joe’s international FAQ says its Classic and Big Joe bodies are entirely ceramic, while its Kettle Joe model has ceramic inserts inside a traditional steel kettle body. If you search broadly for an “egg” grill, you will see both designs, and they are not interchangeable in weight, heat behaviour, or warranty coverage. Kamado Joe’s FAQ is the primary source for that distinction.

What “best” means for a ceramic BBQ
Published comparisons often search-optimise for “best ceramic BBQ,” but a single winner cannot be established from the material available. Manufacturer pages describe features and components; they do not compare models on equal terms, and the sources reviewed for this guide do not include independent side-by-side performance tests. A useful way to decide is to score each candidate against the same checklist: size and cooking area, construction, cooking configuration, accessories, and warranty. The sections below explain each point.

Readers searching for a direct head-to-head often use the phrase “Big Green Egg vs Kamado Joe.” Ideal Home’s 2024 article uses that exact comparison framing, which is a reasonable place to start, but the features that matter most are the ones listed below rather than the brand name.
Construction: ceramic body or ceramic inserts
Start here, because it changes what you are buying.
- Fully ceramic body: Kamado Joe says its Classic and Big Joe bodies are entirely ceramic. Big Green Egg describes its cooker as a ceramic oven.
- Ceramic inserts in a steel body: Kamado Joe’s Kettle Joe uses ceramic inserts inside a traditional steel kettle body.
Ceramic bodies are the traditional kamado form and are the construction the warranty language below is written around. Steel-bodied models may suit buyers who want a different weight or footprint, but check the component warranty for the ceramic parts before assuming the same coverage applies.

- TRIPLE-WALL INSULATED STEEL CONSTRUCTION: The insulated steel body retains heat and limits airflow for greater fuel efficiency, steadier temperatures, and longer burn times that keep meats juicy and tender.

- PRECISE TEMPERATURE CONTROL: Indexed dual adjustable dampers and a built-in temperature gauge let you fine-tune airflow and hold your target temperature, from low-temperature smoking to high-heat searing.
- EASY CLEANUP AND MOBILITY: The EasyDump Ash Pan makes ash removal quick, the included grill grate lifter simplifies charcoal access, and 8-inch locking caster wheels plus foldable side shelves keep the grill easy to move and easy to work around.
Cooking configuration and included parts
Once you have confirmed construction, compare what comes in the box. Included racks, the number of cooking levels, and whether a deflector is supplied all change how far the grill can go beyond direct grilling.
Big Green Egg says its convEGGtor accessory converts the Egg into a pizza oven, smoker, or slow roaster. Kamado Joe’s product material describes multi-level cooking configurations. Kamado Joe’s Big Joe III product page describes a three-tier Divide & Conquer cooking system and a SlōRoller insert. Those are model-specific features: check the exact product page before assuming a feature is standard on another size or model. The Big Joe III product page is the reference for that configuration.
The table below sets out what the manufacturer sources state for the models named in this guide. Where a published source does not give a value, the cell says so.

The gaps in the cooking-area column are the most important limitation. Without a consistent cross-brand capacity figure, compare cooking area on each manufacturer’s current spec sheet, using the same unit (square inches or square centimetres) for every model on your shortlist.

Size and cooking area
Match size to the meals you actually cook. A grill that suits a couple may be cramped for a family roast, and a large unit needs stable installation space and room to open the dome. Measure the footprint and the clearance above the lid before you order, and note whether the grill will sit in a table or outdoor kitchen, which affects installation (see below).
Accessories
A heat deflector or convEGGtor can support indirect cooking, but accessories are brand-, size-, and model-dependent. Before buying an accessory, confirm that it fits your exact grill size. Charcoal is the recurring consumable for every model in this category, so factor ongoing fuel cost into your comparison.

Warranty: read the component table, not the headline
Warranty is where ceramic kamado buyers most often misread the offer. Big Green Egg’s US warranty page states: “We offer a limited lifetime guarantee on the materials and structure of all the ceramic parts of the Egg.” That is a limited guarantee for ceramic parts, not blanket lifetime coverage for the whole grill, and it is subject to the published terms. Big Green Egg’s warranty page is the primary reference.
The US terms, as published on that page and checked on 7 October 2026, break down as follows. Terms may change and differ by region, so confirm them on the current local page before you buy.

| Limited three years | convEGGtor, baking stones, and split heat deflector |
| Shorter periods | Other listed parts and accessories (check the page for each) |
Before you rely on any of these terms, verify three things: that your grill is registered if the manufacturer requires it, that you have proof of purchase, and that the warranty applies in your market. Big Green Egg directs customers to its warranty documentation and dealer support for claims, so a purchase from an authorised dealer can simplify service.

Care, installation, and first use
Follow your grill’s own installation and care manual, because guidance varies by brand and region. Big Green Egg Europe’s service page gives specific advice for its cookers. When an Egg is installed in a table or outdoor kitchen, use a table nest and do not place a stone under the Egg, so air can circulate beneath the cooker. Big Green Egg Europe’s service and warranty page sets out this installation guidance.
After long disuse or exposure to rain, the same page recommends heating the cooker gradually and not exceeding 100°C during the first hour. That is brand-specific guidance for the Egg in that situation; do not apply it to other kamado models without checking their manuals.
Buying checklist
- Confirm construction: fully ceramic body or ceramic inserts in a steel body.
- Check cooking area on the current spec sheet, using one unit for every model you compare.
- List included racks, cooking levels, and deflectors for the exact size you intend to buy.
- Confirm accessory fit before buying a convEGGtor, deflector, or insert.
- Read the warranty by component, and check the terms for your country.
- Register the product and keep proof of purchase.
- Follow the manufacturer’s installation and first-use instructions for your model.
The best ceramic BBQ for you is the one whose construction, size, included cooking system, and warranty match how you plan to cook. Use the table and checklist above to narrow the field, then confirm details on each manufacturer’s current product and warranty pages.
