Start Castlebound on the Medium quality preset at your monitor’s native resolution. If frame pacing breaks up during large fights or local co-op, change only the quality preset to Low. Try High after Low is consistently smooth and your system still has headroom. Castlebound currently documents only three graphics presets—Low, Medium and High—so there is no evidence-based per-option tuning order or guaranteed frame rate yet.
The best starting settings
Castlebound’s documented PC graphics menu has three selectable quality levels: Low, Medium and High. No separate controls for resolution scaling, V-Sync, frame limits, anti-aliasing, shadows, effects or textures have been published. That makes the preset itself the reliable control to use today.

| Situation | Preset to try | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| First launch on a PC that meets the published baseline | Medium | Play a normal stage at native display resolution and watch for uneven motion. |
| Stutter, hitching or uneven frame delivery in combat | Low | Repeat the same type of encounter. Keep Low if motion becomes consistently smooth. |
| Low is smooth and the game remains responsive | High | Raise the preset and test a busy fight, not just a quiet menu or opening area. |
| Local co-op with several players and many enemies | Low or Medium | Judge the busiest shared screen; co-op consistency matters more than a calm solo scene. |
This is a practical starting recommendation inferred from the three documented presets, not a developer benchmark. No hands-on test or published frame-rate measurement establishes that any preset reaches a particular FPS on a particular graphics card.

Ogre Pixel’s August 14, 2025 Steam announcement identifies the available quality choices as Low, Medium and High. The official Steam listing describes Castlebound as a one-to-four-player action platformer with roguelike elements in which players defend a walking castle. That combination matters for tuning: a setting that appears smooth while standing still can feel worse when enemies, effects and multiple players occupy the screen.

The published material does not identify a target frame rate, a recommended PC, a minimum graphics processor, or any additional graphics switches. Treat advice that promises a specific 1080p, 1440p or 4K FPS as unverified until a release build or official update supplies those figures.
Set up Castlebound before changing quality
Use this order so that a background problem is not mistaken for a graphics-preset problem.
- Confirm the operating system. The published Windows baseline is Windows 10. If you are using another Windows edition or an older operating system, compatibility is not established by the listing.
- Check the computer against the listed baseline. The official listing specifies an Intel Core i3 running at 3.2 GHz, 8 GB of RAM and 1,000 MB of available storage. It does not publish a GPU minimum.
- Install the game on a drive with free space. Leave additional working space for Windows, updates and save data rather than filling the drive to its limit. The listing’s 1,000 MB figure is the stated available-storage requirement, not a promise that future patches will use no more.
- Close unnecessary workloads. Pause large downloads, video exports, virtual machines and browser sessions with many active tabs. These can compete for processor time, memory or disk activity regardless of which preset you select.
- Use the display’s native resolution. Begin without forcing a non-native desktop or game resolution. Because resolution scaling is not documented, do not assume a hidden scaling slider exists.
- Start at Medium. Load a representative stage, then test a combat encounter. Menus and quiet areas are poor performance tests.
Choosing Low, Medium or High
Medium: the sensible first balance
Medium is the most useful starting point because it avoids immediately sacrificing image quality while leaving a lower step available if combat becomes uneven. Spend enough time in an actual level to encounter movement, enemies and the castle-defense pressure described for the game. If motion remains even and controls respond promptly, keep Medium rather than changing settings merely because a counter reports a number you cannot feel.

Choose Low when the game hitches during enemy-heavy sequences, when local co-op becomes inconsistent, or when input feels delayed during action. Since the documented menu does not expose individual effects, Low is the supported way to reduce the overall quality workload. Test the same kind of scene after changing it; a quiet room cannot confirm that the problem is solved.

High: an option to earn, not a default promise
High is reasonable only after Low or Medium has shown stable frame pacing in the most demanding situations you can reproduce. Raising the preset can increase rendering work, but the available documentation does not say which effects change or by how much. Do not infer that High is suitable merely because your computer exceeds the CPU or memory baseline; no recommended GPU or benchmark is published.
Improve perceived smoothness without undocumented tweaks
Because Castlebound’s public settings list is short, concentrate on repeatable conditions rather than hunting for switches that may not exist.
Use a repeatable test scene
Choose one combat situation with several enemies, move through it in the same way, and compare presets one at a time. Restarting the game between changes is useful if you suspect a temporary hitch, but do not treat one unusually smooth or rough pass as a benchmark. Record whether the issue is a sustained slowdown, a brief hitch, or input delay; each points to a different cause.
Reduce contention from Windows
- Stop active downloads and cloud synchronization while testing.
- Close recording, streaming and browser applications you do not need.
- Keep the laptop connected to power if its battery profile limits performance.
- Allow Windows and the graphics driver to finish pending updates, then reboot before comparing presets.
These steps do not add Castlebound-specific features or guarantee a frame rate. They simply remove common sources of variable frame delivery so the Low/Medium/High comparison is meaningful.

Do not stack unverified fixes
Changing several Windows power, driver and display options at once makes it impossible to know what helped and can introduce new problems. Change one condition, reproduce the same scene, and keep the change only if the result is clearly better. There is currently no published evidence that a particular overlay, registry setting, launch argument or third-party optimizer is required for Castlebound.
Resolution and display guidance
Run at the monitor’s native resolution for the first comparison. Native output preserves the display’s intended sharpness and gives you a stable reference when judging Low, Medium and High. If the game later exposes resolution scaling or an internal render-resolution control, that would be a separate test variable; the current documentation does not confirm such a control.
Do not use a claimed “best 1080p setting” as a universal rule. The evidence does not include a 1080p, 1440p or 4K benchmark, and performance depends on the eventual rendering path, graphics hardware and driver. A higher-resolution monitor may require more rendering work, but the amount cannot be quantified from the published information.

Local co-op: tune for the busiest moment
Castlebound supports one to four players. In local co-op, test with the maximum number of players you normally use and include a crowded fight. Several characters, enemies and effects can create a different workload from solo play, so a preset that feels fine alone may not remain consistent with a full group.

- Start a solo session at Medium and confirm basic responsiveness.
- Repeat a representative combat section with the number of local players you expect to use.
- If motion becomes uneven, switch to Low before changing anything else.
- Retest the same group size and encounter. Keep Low for co-op if it is the only preset that remains consistent.
- Try High only after both solo and co-op tests remain smooth at the lower setting.
Prioritize consistent frame delivery and readable action over a higher preset. In a cooperative platformer, a brief hitch during a jump or defense sequence can matter more than small visual differences between quality levels.
Can your PC run Castlebound?
The official Steam listing currently gives the following Windows minimums:
| Component | Published baseline | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 | This is the listed Windows requirement; support for other operating systems is not stated. |
| Processor | Intel Core i3 at 3.2 GHz | The listing gives this model class and clock; it does not identify a generation or equivalent AMD processor. |
| Memory | 8 GB RAM | This is the published minimum, not a recommended amount for large co-op scenes. |
| Storage | 1,000 MB available | The listing states available storage; future updates may change the space you need. |
| Graphics processor | Not stated | No minimum GPU, recommended GPU or graphics-memory figure has been published. |
Meeting those entries means your computer matches the currently listed baseline; it does not establish a guaranteed FPS, preset or resolution. The missing GPU specification is especially important for graphics planning. Until an official requirement appears, avoid buying a particular card or assuming that an integrated GPU will perform at a given quality level.
What FPS should you expect?
No published Castlebound benchmark supplies an FPS target or frame-time result. That means a responsible guide cannot promise 30, 60 or 120 FPS at any resolution, nor can it claim that Low, Medium or High corresponds to a particular frame rate. Your practical test is whether motion and input remain consistent in the scenes you actually play.
Best Value
If you use a frame counter, treat it as an observation for your own system rather than a universal result. Record the display resolution, preset, CPU, GPU, RAM, Windows version and scene. A single peak number in an empty area says little about performance during combat or four-player play.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| Symptom | First action | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Uneven motion during crowded fights | Change Medium to Low. | Repeat the same encounter with background downloads and overlays closed. |
| Solo is smooth but four-player co-op stutters | Use Low for the co-op session. | Test with the usual number of players and the busiest defense sequence. |
| Hitches occur at irregular intervals | Check downloads, synchronization, recording and other disk or CPU activity. | Restart Windows and compare the same scene before changing presets again. |
| Controls feel delayed even when the image looks smooth | Check for background load and display latency. | Test a different display mode or monitor only if the game exposes that option; no Castlebound-specific latency setting is documented. |
| The game does not start | Confirm Windows 10 compatibility, available storage and current system updates. | Because no GPU minimum is published, record the graphics hardware when seeking support rather than assuming it meets an unstated requirement. |
| Performance changes after an update | Return to Medium and retest a known scene. | Recheck the game’s current listing and patch notes for changed requirements or settings. |
A preset change cannot fix every problem. Crashes, driver faults, overheating, failing hardware and network issues require separate diagnosis. Do not lower quality repeatedly when the symptom is a complete launch failure or a system-wide error.

- Windows edition and version.
- CPU model and clock, GPU model and driver version, and installed RAM.
- Display resolution and refresh rate.
- Quality preset: Low, Medium or High.
- Number of local players and the level or encounter where the problem appears.
- Whether the issue is a sustained slowdown, a single hitch, visual corruption, crash or input delay.
- What changed after moving between presets.
This record avoids misleading comparisons. For example, “High is slow” is incomplete without the resolution, hardware and scene, while “Medium hitches only during a four-player defense sequence on this configuration” gives a reproducible lead.
What may change before release
The Steam Community page currently lists Castlebound as coming to Steam, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 on November 11, 2026. That is a planned date and can change. Requirements and graphics controls can also change before release or in later builds.
Revisit the official listing and update notes after major patches. The most useful future additions would be a minimum and recommended GPU, a target frame rate, and documentation for any resolution, synchronization, frame-cap, anti-aliasing, shadow, effects or texture controls. Until those details are published, the three-preset method is the narrowest advice that can be supported: begin at Medium, use Low when heavy scenes are not smooth, and test High only after stable frame pacing is demonstrated.
Bottom line for PC players
Use Medium at native resolution as your first Castlebound configuration. Move to Low for combat or local co-op stutter, then consider High only after the demanding scenes remain consistently smooth. The currently published Windows baseline is Windows 10, a 3.2 GHz Intel Core i3, 8 GB of RAM and 1,000 MB of available storage, but no GPU requirement, recommended specification or FPS benchmark is available. Treat every performance result as system-specific and recheck the requirements as the planned November 11, 2026 release approaches.
