Best Car Insurance for Teens and Young Drivers in October 2026

There is no single best car insurer for every teen or family. In its October 2026 comparison, CNBC Select names Travelers for affordability, Progressive for accident forgiveness, Auto-Owners for driver monitoring, State Farm for customer satisfaction, GEICO for multiple-car families, and USAA for military families. Treat those as starting points—not guarantees of the lowest price or best fit. Rates and availability depend on the state, drivers, vehicles, coverage, and insurer.

The useful next step is to compare personalized quotes with the same drivers, cars, limits, and deductibles. A teen’s premium can differ sharply from a national average, so use published figures only as context.

Which car insurers are worth comparing for teen drivers?

CNBC Select’s October 2026 guide assigns different strengths to six insurers. These are the publisher’s categories, not a standardized ranking of every insurer or a promise about an individual quote.

Priority Insurer to consider What to verify
Affordability Travelers Get a quote for your household; availability and discounts vary by state.
Accident forgiveness Progressive Check eligibility, availability, and policy terms before assuming the feature applies.
Driver monitoring Auto-Owners Confirm local availability and whether the household is comfortable with the monitoring program.
Customer satisfaction State Farm CNBC Select’s category is its own assessment; compare service and claims information for yourself.
Multiple cars GEICO Compare the total household premium and coverage, not only the added cost associated with the teen.
Military families USAA Eligibility is restricted; confirm that the driver or family qualifies.

CNBC Select reports that Travelers offers more than a dozen discounts, including safe-driver, good-student, new-car, homeowner, and electric-vehicle-related discounts; some are state-specific. The guide also says Travelers’ IntelliDrive program may save up to 30%. That is an advertised maximum, subject to eligibility, state availability, and program terms—not a typical or guaranteed saving. See CNBC Select’s October 2026 comparison for its methodology and details.

How much does teen car insurance cost?

CNBC Select reports two September 2026 averages from The Zebra: $5,040 per year for a teen driver and $2,324 per year as a national average. These are comparison-site averages reported secondhand, not quotes for a particular driver. They do not predict what a teen will pay in a particular state or household.

A state example shows why context matters. The North Carolina Department of Insurance gave an illustrative figure of $991 for a six-month full-coverage policy for parents, rising to $1,730 after adding a 16-year-old. Those figures, published June 17, 2026, are a regulator’s example—not a statewide or national rate estimate. Read the North Carolina Department of Insurance example.

How should a family compare quotes?

Start before the teen begins driving, and ask the current insurer and several competitors for quotes using the same information. Washington’s insurance regulator recommends shopping around and getting a quote before buying a car for the teen.

  1. Set the same comparison details. Give each insurer the same household drivers, vehicles, liability limits, collision and comprehensive coverage, and deductibles. A minimum-liability quote is not comparable to a full-coverage quote.
  2. Compare policy arrangements. Ask whether the teen can be added to a parent’s policy and, if appropriate, request an individual-policy quote as well. State Farm says a teen’s own policy will likely cost substantially more than being added to a parent’s policy, but the result and eligibility depend on the household and insurer.
  3. Ask about discounts by name. Check good-student, driver-education, multi-car, bundling, student-away-at-school, and safe-driving discounts. Ask for the conditions that apply to the specific teen and policy in your state.
  4. Quote the exact car before buying it. Provide the make, model, and year. A less expensive older car is not automatically safer or cheaper to insure; compare its safety characteristics, replacement cost, and actual premium.
  5. Review telematics terms before enrolling. Ask what driving data the program measures, how it is used, what the terms are, and whether the program is available in your state.

Washington and Utah regulators also recommend shopping around. See Washington’s guidance on auto coverage for teen drivers and the Utah Insurance Department’s teen-driver insurance advice.

Should a teen be on a parent’s policy or have a separate policy?

There is no arrangement that is right for every household. State Farm says a teen can be listed on a parent’s or spouse’s policy and that an individual teen policy will likely cost substantially more than being added to a parent’s. Ask insurers to quote the arrangements available to your family rather than assuming every carrier treats household drivers alike.

Tell the insurer where the teen lives, which cars the teen uses, and how often. If parents live separately or the teen drives cars kept at both homes, ask each insurer how the teen and vehicles must be listed. Washington’s regulator notes requirements can differ when a teen uses vehicles at both parents’ homes. Get the insurer’s answer for your precise living and driving arrangements before the teen drives. State Farm’s guidance for teen and new-driver insurance describes policy options and common coverage types.

Which coverage and deductible should a family choose?

Coverage depends on state requirements, household finances and assets, the car’s value, and any loan or lease conditions. Common options include liability, collision, comprehensive, uninsured or underinsured motorist, medical-payments, and emergency-road-service coverage. A state minimum may not fully protect against the financial consequences of a lawsuit, the Illinois Department of Insurance warns; do not treat a minimum limit as universally adequate.

  • Liability: Covers eligible claims for injury or property damage the insured driver causes, subject to the policy limits and terms. Compare limits with your state’s requirements and household circumstances.
  • Collision and comprehensive: Consider the car’s value and whether your finances can absorb repair or replacement costs. A lender or lessor may require physical-damage coverage.
  • Deductibles: A higher deductible can reduce the premium, but the policyholder pays more out of pocket for a covered claim. Raise it only if the household can afford that expense.
  • Uninsured or underinsured motorist and medical-payments coverage: Check state rules and consider how these options fit the household’s needs; availability and requirements vary.

Utah’s Insurance Department advises weighing a larger deductible against the loss you could have to pay and reviewing whether physical-damage coverage remains worthwhile for an older car, subject to lender requirements. The Illinois Department of Insurance’s teen-driver guidance discusses minimum coverage and protection.

What changes a teen’s premium?

  • State and location: Rates, insurer availability, minimum coverage rules, and discount conditions vary by state. National averages cannot replace local quotes.
  • Age, experience, and driving history: Teens have less driving experience and elevated crash risk, according to Washington’s regulator. North Carolina’s regulator also identifies experience and driving record as factors affecting premiums.
  • Car and usage: Vehicle make, model, value, safety, and how much the teen drives can affect the price. Quote the specific vehicle before purchasing it.
  • Policy design: Limits, deductibles, covered vehicles, and whether the teen is on a family or individual policy all affect the quote.
  • Household details: Where the teen lives and which household vehicles they drive can affect how insurers require the policy to be set up.

How can families lower the cost without choosing blindly?

Ask insurers to identify discounts the teen actually qualifies for, then compare the final premiums at identical coverage levels. State Farm advertises a good-student discount of up to 25% for eligible drivers; qualifications, availability, and savings vary. It also describes driver-training and safe-driving programs, whose terms should be checked with the insurer. A discount’s advertised maximum is not a prediction of what a family will save.

Other levers require a trade-off. Choosing a car with a modest replacement cost and good safety characteristics may help, but the exact car still needs a quote. Raising a deductible can lower premiums while increasing the amount due after a covered loss. Dropping collision or comprehensive coverage may be worth evaluating for an older vehicle, but first consider its value, the household’s ability to replace it, and any lender or lease requirements.

For broader context on comparing family and individual arrangements, NerdWallet describes a May 2026 analysis of hypothetical scenarios in its guide to car insurance for teens and young drivers. Its scenarios are not personalized quotes either.

What should a family in Oklahoma—or any other state—ask?

A question such as “Which company is best for a family with a new driver in Oklahoma?” cannot be answered reliably from a national ranking alone. The answer depends on that household’s drivers, cars, coverage, insurer eligibility, and local underwriting. Ask several insurers for comparable quotes, including the family’s current carrier, and confirm that any recommended feature or discount is available for the specific policy in the state.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
