It is not right for every show. A Canon EOS C70 is a compelling run-and-gun alternative if you can source one; a Sony FX3 suits compact B-camera work; and fixed house coverage may call for a PTZ or broadcast camera rather than another handheld cinema body.
Reality TV covers observational location shoots, interviews, competition sets and continuously monitored houses. Choose for the whole production package—camera, lens, audio, power, media, synchronization and delivery requirements—not resolution or body price alone.
Quick picks by production job
| Camera or category | Best suited to | Why consider it | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sony FX6 | Best all-around field camera | Full-frame sensor, electronic variable ND, fast hybrid autofocus and professional production design. Sony FX6 information | Body price is only part of the cost; lenses, media, batteries and support gear add up. |
| Canon EOS C70 | Handheld documentary and run-and-gun | Built-in ND, mini-XLR inputs, rotating touchscreen, Dual Pixel autofocus and timecode. Canon C70 product page | Canon’s U.S. page showed the model unavailable/discontinued; verify stock rather than relying on an expired promotion. |
| Sony FX3 | Compact B-camera or specialty angle | Small Cinema Line body for tight spaces, vehicles and travel. FX3 specifications | No FX6-style built-in ND; production ergonomics may require accessories. |
| Sony FX30 | Lower-cost Sony-based package or extra angle | Compact Super 35 Cinema Line option for productions using Sony E-mount lenses. Sony Cinema Line store | Needs a filtration plan and does not offer the FX6’s full-frame low-light position or integrated variable ND. |
| Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro 4.6K G2 or 12K | Controlled interviews, confessionals and premium inserts | Built-in ND, professional controls and Blackmagic RAW workflows. URSA Mini Pro technical specifications | More demanding in size, power, media and post-production than a light field setup. |
| Sony FR7 or another PTZ/broadcast system | Remote or fixed-position coverage | Remote camera movement can cover positions where an operator cannot be stationed. Sony Cinema Line overview | Requires control, monitoring and suitable infrastructure; not a handheld-camera replacement. |
These are different tools, not interchangeable entries in a single image-quality ranking. A broadcast-style camera can be the better choice when fast servo zooms and long-lens operation matter more than a large sensor or shallow depth of field.
What matters more than resolution
ND filters for changing locations
Internal neutral-density filtration lets an operator control exposure without changing shutter speed or aperture every time the action moves from a bright exterior to an interior. The FX6 uses electronic variable ND; the C70 and URSA Mini Pro models have built-in ND systems. The FX3 and FX30 need an external filter or a lens/accessory solution. Fixed external filters remain workable, but they add handling steps and can slow a fast transition.

Autofocus that helps without taking over
Face and subject tracking can reduce workload when one operator is following unpredictable people. Canon lists Dual Pixel CMOS autofocus and face detection for the C70; Sony describes fast hybrid autofocus for the FX6. Those are manufacturer claims, not a guarantee that a camera will hold focus in every situation. Subjects can overlap, turn away or pass behind foreground objects. Test the actual body, lens and dimmest expected location; decide when to use tracking, manual focus or a focus puller.
Dialogue capture and monitoring
Clean dialogue usually matters more than extra pixels. Check the number and type of professional inputs, phantom power, headphone monitoring and whether the camera accepts a mixer feed. The C70 includes mini-XLR inputs; other bodies may need an audio handle or external interface. Whenever the production permits, use a sound recordist, suitable wireless lavaliers or boom microphone, and a mixer. A camera cannot repair clipped, distant or poorly recorded speech.
Timecode and synchronization
For several cameras and a separate sound recorder, confirm timecode input/output, jam-sync procedure, drift behavior over long takes and whether genlock is required. Canon lists a timecode terminal on the C70, and Blackmagic lists timecode support for the URSA Mini Pro. Timecode alone does not guarantee frame-accurate sync: verify that every device shares a compatible standard and frame-rate setup, and keep an audio-sync fallback.
Continuous recording, power and media
Long coverage depends on more than a camera’s headline recording limit. Card capacity, codec data rate, battery changes, heat, recording settings and ambient conditions all matter. Do not assume a claim of “unlimited recording” applies across every resolution, frame rate, media type or temperature. For a fixed position, plan continuous external power and card changes; for mobile coverage, rehearse battery and media swaps so they do not leave an important moment uncovered.

Lens handling and field of view
A practical zoom often matters more than a small body-to-body image difference. A stabilized standard zoom covers general action; a wide zoom helps in cramped interiors; a telephoto or servo zoom supports observational distance. Stills zooms can be compact and useful, while a broadcast servo zoom enables fast reframing from a stationary position. Consider autofocus compatibility, stabilization, parfocal behavior, focus throw and whether an operator can change focal length without losing the moment.
Codec, storage and finishing
Choose a format the editorial and finishing pipeline can handle. Compare bit depth, chroma subsampling, intra-frame or long-GOP recording, RAW availability, data rate and proxy options. The URSA Mini Pro 12K records Blackmagic RAW to CFast or SD media and can record to an SSD over USB-C. RAW and high-resolution capture can help with grading or reframing, but increase storage, backup and processing demands. For a conventional HD or 4K reality delivery, 12K is not automatically useful.
Camera recommendations in detail
Sony FX6: the safest single-camera starting point
The FX6 is the best default when one camera must cover a broad mix of location work: it pairs a full-frame sensor and Sony-highlighted dual base ISO values of 800 and 4000 with electronic variable ND, autofocus and a production-oriented body. Its combination is useful when crews move between daylight, dim rooms and handheld action. Sony’s specifications and product details are at Sony Professional.
Pair it with a versatile stabilized zoom selected for the show’s typical room sizes and working distance; add a wider option for tight interiors if needed. Consider the FX6 if the crew needs integrated ND and a cinema-style workflow. Skip it if the production mainly needs unattended fixed cameras, long servo-zoom reach or the lowest-cost body. Sony’s U.S. store showed $6,999.99 body-only and $8,299.99 with lens kit during the cited price snapshot; check the current Sony store listing before budgeting.

Canon EOS C70: a strong handheld alternative, subject to availability
The C70 combines a Super 35 DGO sensor with built-in ND, mini-XLR, a rotating touchscreen, Dual Pixel CMOS autofocus, internal Cinema RAW Light, XF-AVC Intra and a timecode terminal. That mix suits documentary-style location work, interviews and a compact multi-camera package. Canon describes RF lens compatibility and adapted EF options on its C70 body page. A stabilized standard zoom is a sensible field pairing; select a wider lens when rooms are restrictive.
Canon’s U.S. product page displayed a regular $4,799 price and a $3,499 promotion that ended July 26, 2026; it also showed the body unavailable/discontinued. Those are not dependable current buying prices. Check authorized-dealer availability or consider rental before building a package around it. Check Canon’s product page.
Sony FX3: compact B-camera and specialty tool
The FX3 is useful where size matters: a car mount, travel kit, tight room or secondary angle. It shares Sony Cinema Line context and can complement an FX6 package, but lacks the FX6’s integrated electronic variable ND and more production-oriented body design. Plan the filtration and rigging before assigning it to long handheld shifts. Sony’s U.S. store showed $3,899.99 on sale against a listed regular $4,299.99 during the price snapshot; confirm current pricing at the Sony store.
Sony FX30: an economical route to matching angles
The FX30 is a lower-cost Super 35 option for secondary angles, smaller productions or crews already invested in Sony E-mount. Its sensor format is not inherently a problem for reality work; lens choice and matching exposure matter more. Compared with the FX6, it gives up the full-frame low-light position and built-in variable ND, so budget for filtration and any audio, power and rigging accessories the production needs. Sony’s U.S. store showed $1,799.99 on sale versus a listed regular $2,099.99 in the price snapshot; see the current listing.

- Adjustable focusing speeds and advanced Hybrid AF system provide fast and precise focusing with face detection.
Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro: controlled image-making
The 4.6K G2 and 12K models are best considered for a dedicated camera team, controlled interviews, confessionals or premium inserts where recording latitude and a RAW workflow justify a larger setup. The 12K model offers a Super 35 sensor, built-in ND, interchangeable mounts and Blackmagic RAW; the 4.6K G2 offers a Super 35 sensor, three built-in ND filters and up to 15 stops of dynamic range as specified by Blackmagic. See the technical specifications and product overview.
These cameras are less convenient for lightweight observational coverage because power, media and post-production needs are substantial. Blackmagic listed the 12K at approximately $7,495 on one product page; localized or cached pages differed, so verify local pricing. The 4.6K G2 had an approximately $6,985 price signal on one page, also subject to market and listing differences. Treat both as price checks, not guaranteed quotes.
Sony FR7 and broadcast-style cameras: solve fixed-position problems
For house, competition or venue coverage, a remotely operated PTZ camera can make more sense than placing an operator at every position. Sony describes the FR7 as a full-frame PTZ camera with pan, tilt and zoom control. It needs an appropriate control and monitoring setup, so it is not a substitute for a handheld field camera. For long-lens observation or fast reframing from a staffed position, also evaluate an ENG/broadcast camcorder with a servo zoom. The right category depends on whether the position is remote, continuously monitored or operator-driven.

| Production format | Prioritize | Practical direction |
|---|---|---|
| Observational location documentary | Autofocus, internal ND, stabilized zoom, battery life, audio and low-light handling | Start with FX6 or available C70; use a compact body as a specialty angle. |
| Dating or competition show | Matched cameras, timecode, dependable recording, consistent color and monitoring | Build a tested multi-camera package; use staffed cameras for action and remote/broadcast positions where useful. |
| House or venue coverage | Remote operation, fixed power, long-duration recording, wide coverage and monitoring | Compare PTZ and broadcast systems with cinema bodies rather than assuming interchangeable-lens cameras are best. |
| Confessional or interview | Skin tone, controlled lighting, audio, ND, timecode and reliable AC power | C70 or URSA Mini Pro can fit a crewed controlled setup; use consistent lenses and camera settings across angles. |
| Travel or adventure | Compactness, weather planning, stabilization, versatile zoom and power | FX6 for a full production kit; FX3 or FX30 where size or budget outweighs integrated features. |
| Low-budget or social-first unscripted | Reliable dialogue, simple media workflow, adequate low light and a usable zoom | FX30 can be a starting point, but include the cost and handling of ND, audio, power and support gear. |

- Media and data: cards appropriate for the selected codec and frame rate, readers, verified backup capacity and a proxy plan where useful.
- Operation: handle or cage, monitor, support, weather protection and wireless video if the crew needs them.
- Synchronization: compatible timecode equipment and a documented jam-sync procedure for every body and recorder.
Small bodies such as the FX3 and FX30 can become accessory-dependent once you add audio, ND, power and monitoring. Compare complete packages rather than inferring system value from body-only prices.
Check acceptance and test before committing
Camera approval belongs to the commissioning broadcaster or production partner, not to a universal industry list. A+E Global Media has published acceptable-camera documentation that includes examples such as the FX3, FX6 and URSA, but that document does not establish approval for another network or a current production. Obtain the latest camera list and technical delivery specification for your project; A+E’s documents are available at A+E Global Media and A+E Networks.
Before buying a multi-camera package or starting a shoot, run a test under representative conditions. Check:
- Whether skin tones, highlight handling and noise match acceptably across bodies and lenses.
- Autofocus behavior with crossing subjects, foreground obstructions and the dimmest real location.
- Exposure changes when moving between interior and exterior, including the ND workflow.
- Dialogue levels, wireless reliability, headphone monitoring and sync with the recorder.
- Recording duration at the intended resolution, codec and frame rate, including media changes and power.
- How the chosen files ingest, proxy, edit and finish in the production’s actual post pipeline.
Buy or rent?
Buy when the production will use the same package repeatedly, has staff to maintain it and can budget for matching lenses, media, power and support. Rent for a one-off pilot, a short series, a specialized servo zoom, a multi-camera package that needs to match, or a project whose commissioning partner requires a particular configuration. A rental house can also provide a tested package and support, but confirm local inventory, rates, insurance and availability directly. Renting an FX6 or C70 package for a pilot can be more practical than buying a body and assembling accessories before the format is proven.
