Best Cameras for Beautiful Fish Tanks and Aquariums: What to Look For

There isn’t a proven all-around “best” camera for aquarium photography in the sources available. Choose a camera that lets you control shutter speed and ISO, focuses reliably on moving fish, and works with a lens that can focus at the distance you need. For close-up fish portraits, the right macro lens may matter more than a pricier camera body. For a whole planted tank, reflection control and a steady, level setup matter most.

What makes a camera suitable for aquarium photos?

Look for features that match the picture you want rather than a particular brand or model. Aquarium light is often dim relative to the shutter speed needed to freeze a fish, while glass introduces reflections and can distort an angled view.

  • Exposure control: The camera should let you set or manage shutter speed and ISO. A fast shutter helps keep moving fish sharp; raising ISO can help maintain that speed in low light, though high ISO can add visible noise.
  • Autofocus and handling: You need to acquire a moving fish through the pane and hold the camera square to it, often in a dark room.
  • Lens choice: A close-focusing or macro lens helps when fish swim near the glass. For a full-tank view, choose a field of view that frames the aquarium without forcing the camera into an awkward position.
  • Reflection control: A lens that can sit close to the glass, with a compatible soft rubber hood if needed, can help block room reflections.
  • Support for static scenes: A tripod and remote release are useful for a planted tank composition, but less helpful when tracking fish that keep moving.

The Nikon and Canon guides below offer technique, not a current cross-brand camera comparison or controlled performance test. They do not establish a contemporary camera winner or current prices.

Choose for the kind of aquarium picture you want

Individual fish and close details

Fish may swim only inches from the front pane, so minimum focus distance matters. Nikon recommends a macro or Micro-NIKKOR lens for this situation. Its examples—a 40mm lens for DX and a 60mm for FX—are older Nikon-specific examples, not universal recommendations for current cameras. Check that any close-focus lens is compatible with your camera mount and sensor format.

For moving fish, prioritize a shutter fast enough to control motion blur. Nikon gives Manual exposure, Auto ISO, 1/125 second and f/5.6 as a starting example, not a guaranteed setting. Faster fish, a different working distance, or a need for greater depth of field may call for adjustments. Watch bright scales and other highlights as you change exposure.

Canon’s 2014 guide similarly advises increasing ISO when needed to avoid a slow shutter, while noting that very high ISO can introduce noise. Image stabilization may reduce blur from camera shake, but it cannot freeze a fish’s movement.

The entire planted tank

A full-tank aquascape is comparatively static, so a tripod and release can keep the framing steady while you make an exposure. Aqua Design Amano recommends cleaning both sides of the glass, reducing room light, shading direct light from the lens, and placing the camera level and square to the pane. Its example settings—aperture priority, ISO 800–1600 and f/5.6–8—are not prescriptions: the guide says ideal settings vary with the lighting, camera and lens.

Control reflections and distortion

Reflections are a major obstacle in aquarium photography. Nikon National Training Specialist Paul Van Allen writes, “The single biggest challenge to aquarium image creation is dealing with the external reflections.” A lens hood pressed gently against the pane can block some reflected room light; Nikon recommends rubber so the contact does not harm the glass. Check the edges of the frame, because a wide-angle lens may capture the hood.

Keep the lens axis perpendicular to the aquarium pane. Nikon warns that an angled view through thick acrylic can create a colored fringe through refraction; Canon also recommends shooting at a right angle to reduce distortion. A rubber hood should be compatible with your lens, and its inner edge should not appear in the image.

Set up for moving fish in a public aquarium

  1. Check the rules. Follow the aquarium’s photography policy, especially any restrictions on flash or contacting the glass.
  2. Reduce reflections. Bring the lens close to the pane. If permitted, use a soft rubber hood against the surface; make sure it is not visible in the frame.
  3. Square up. Aim perpendicular to the glass or acrylic to limit distortion and color fringing.
  4. Start with a motion-conscious exposure. Nikon’s example is Manual exposure with Auto ISO, 1/125 second and f/5.6. Adjust shutter speed for the fish, and balance aperture and ISO for available light and depth of field.
  5. Review sharpness and noise. If the fish is blurred, try a faster shutter; if the image becomes noisy, consider the trade-off between ISO, shutter speed and the light available. Stabilization helps with camera movement, not subject movement.
  6. Avoid flash unless it is allowed and appropriate. Flash can reflect in the glass, and reflected light on fish scales can look unnatural.

These settings are starting points from educational guides, not results from a camera test. Nikon’s page uses legacy Nikon bodies and F-mount lenses in its examples; Canon’s advice was published in 2014 and includes historical EOS M equipment. Use the techniques rather than treating those specific products as current recommendations.

Set up for a planted tank at home

  1. Clean the aquarium. Wipe the inside and outside of the glass so smudges and deposits do not distract from the layout.
  2. Remove avoidable visual clutter. Move distracting equipment if practical without disturbing the tank.
  3. Limit competing light. Turn off room lights, close curtains or shoot at night so room reflections are less prominent. Shade direct aquarium light that spills toward the lens.
  4. Level and square the camera. Keep it level and perpendicular to the front pane.
  5. Use a tripod and release. These help hold a static composition steady. Aqua Design Amano’s aperture-priority example uses ISO 800–1600 and f/5.6–8, but calls for trial exposures because the ideal settings depend on the actual light, camera and lens.

Should you use flash?

Usually avoid it for aquarium photographs. Nikon advises against flash because fish scales can reflect it and look unnatural; Aqua Design Amano says built-in flash reflects in aquarium glass. In a public aquarium, follow its rules as well. For a planted tank, controlling room light and stabilizing the camera are better-supported approaches than adding direct flash.

Which accessories are worth considering?

  • Soft rubber lens hood: Can block external reflections when brought against the pane without scratching it. Confirm lens compatibility and check for vignetting, especially with a wide-angle lens.
  • Macro lens: Useful for close fish details when the fish swim near the glass. Confirm close-focus distance and camera compatibility before buying.
  • Tripod and remote release: Helpful for a fixed whole-tank composition; not a substitute for a fast shutter when photographing moving fish.

These are task-based recommendations, not a ranking of specific products. The reviewed guides do not establish current model availability or compatibility for any particular camera system.

Sources and scope

The recommendations here draw on Nikon USA’s aquarium photography guide by Nikon National Training Specialist Paul Van Allen; Canon Asia Snapshot’s guide to capturing swimming fish without blur, published January 23, 2014; and Aqua Design Amano’s planted aquarium photography guide, published April 17, 2020. The camera and lens examples in Nikon’s and Canon’s guides are historical; the aquarium techniques are more broadly useful.
