Best Camera Phones Without Heavy AI Photo Processing (2026 Guide)

There is no verified phone that produces completely unprocessed everyday photos. JPEG and HEIF images are rendered by a computational pipeline, and even RAW options can retain or add processing. The practical choice is how much control you want over that pipeline: restrained default rendering, manual exposure and focus, or a RAW file you can edit yourself.

For hands-on control, look at a Sony Xperia model that supports Photo Pro. For a flagship system with a documented manual-and-RAW workflow, Samsung’s Expert RAW app is an option. For users who prefer the iPhone system but want more editing latitude, a supported Pro iPhone with ProRAW is the relevant route. None should be described as proven to apply the least processing without a controlled, same-scene test.

What “without heavy AI processing” actually means

People use “AI camera processing” to describe several different things. A complaint about an oversharpened image is not the same as a complaint about skin smoothing, merged HDR exposures, automatic night stacking or a generative object-removal tool. Before choosing a phone, identify the effect you want to avoid.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Sharpening and local contrast: Fine edges can look crisp at phone size but become halos or crunchy texture when enlarged.
  • Noise reduction and smoothing: The camera may remove grain by replacing hair, fabric or foliage with a waxy-looking surface.
  • HDR merging: Several exposures can be combined to protect highlights and lift shadows. This can look natural in a static scene but may produce motion artifacts.
  • Scene-based rendering: The camera identifies a subject or scene and changes color, contrast or exposure automatically.
  • Face and skin processing: Smoothing, eye enhancement or portrait separation may be applied even when the photographer did not request an obvious filter.
  • Generative editing: An editing tool can synthesize or remove content after capture. That is different from the rendering applied to the original JPEG.

A phone’s normal JPEG or HEIF is therefore not a sensor dump. It has already been demosaiced, denoised, color-managed, sharpened and compressed, with the exact balance varying by camera, lens, lighting and software version. “Natural” is a preference, not a measurable industry mode.

Apple’s ProRAW documentation makes the distinction explicit: ProRAW combines standard RAW information with iPhone image processing. Samsung’s Expert RAW workflow is described as an HDR RAW workflow, not as a promise that all computational steps disappear. Sony’s manual modes give you more control over capture settings, but Sony’s documentation does not establish that an automatic Xperia JPEG is less processed than a rival’s JPEG.

The best candidates for different kinds of control

Candidate or workflow Documented strength Important limitation Best way to position it
Sony Xperia with Photo Pro Photo Pro documents AUTO, program auto (P), shutter-priority (S), manual exposure (M) and, on relevant models, memory recall (MR) modes. DNG RAW is supported on applicable devices. The support pages are model-specific and do not compare current Xperia JPEG rendering directly with Apple or Samsung. For photographers who want to set exposure and focus themselves; verify the exact model and inspect unedited automatic samples before calling the output natural.
Samsung Galaxy using Expert RAW Samsung lists the Galaxy S26, S26+ and S26 Ultra among supported models and documents JPEG plus linear 16-bit DNG output with ISO, shutter speed, white balance, exposure and focus controls. It is an HDR RAW workflow. The documentation does not show that the ordinary Camera app’s JPEGs are minimally processed. For users who want broad flagship hardware with an editable capture workflow and are willing to develop the files.
Supported iPhone Pro using ProRAW Apple documents RAW capture with editing latitude for exposure, color and white balance. ProRAW incorporates iPhone image processing and is unavailable in Portrait mode. For buyers who like the iPhone system and want more room to adjust a file later, not for a claim of unprocessed capture.

This is a control comparison, not a ranking of image quality. A Tom’s Guide comparison published October 10, 2026, compared a current iPhone Pro Max and Galaxy S26 Ultra, but it was not a controlled test of which phone applies the least computational processing. No available test establishes a universal winner on that question.

How the image pipeline changes your choice

Default JPEG or HEIF

This is the fastest workflow: point, shoot and share. The phone decides exposure, white balance, focus, denoising, HDR blending and tone mapping. It is the right option when consistency and speed matter, but it gives you the least ability to undo a rendering decision after the fact.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Manual capture

Manual exposure or focus lets you replace some automatic decisions with your own. It can prevent a bright window from forcing an overly bright subject, keep a shutter fast enough to freeze motion, or lock focus on a specific plane. Manual capture does not necessarily disable the phone’s rendered-image pipeline; it changes the inputs to that pipeline.

Computational modes

Night, portrait, high-dynamic-range and scene modes deliberately combine multiple frames or apply subject-specific rendering. They can solve difficult lighting problems, but they also make it harder to predict which pixels came from which exposure. If your priority is a simple, repeatable file, use these modes only when their benefit outweighs their visual signature.

RAW and RAW-derived formats

RAW preserves more sensor data and gives an editor more control over exposure, color and white balance. It still is not a guarantee that every stage is untouched. Apple says ProRAW keeps iPhone image processing, while Samsung describes Expert RAW as producing an HDR RAW file. RAW also creates a second job: storing, reviewing and developing the file in compatible software.

Sony Xperia: the clearest route to hands-on capture controls

Sony’s support page titled “There is no manual mode in Camera app,” last modified January 20, 2026, explains that Xperia Photo Pro provides several capture modes. Depending on the model, you can select AUTO, P, S, M and MR (memory recall) rather than relying solely on the standard automatic camera interface.

What the modes let you decide

  • AUTO: The phone makes the principal exposure choices for you.
  • P (program auto): The camera remains largely automatic while allowing a more camera-like shooting workflow.
  • S (shutter-priority): You choose shutter speed and the camera balances the remaining exposure parameters.
  • M (manual exposure): You take direct responsibility for exposure settings within the controls the model provides.
  • MR (memory recall): On relevant models, saved settings can be recalled for repeatable situations.

The presence of these modes is useful when your objection is primarily to automatic decisions. It does not prove that the AUTO JPEG uses less sharpening, denoising or HDR than another phone. Sony’s documentation is model-specific, so check the exact Xperia model, regional software and Photo Pro version before buying for a particular control.

RAW format and a Sony-specific caveat

Sony’s separate support note says Xperia phones use DNG RAW rather than the ARW files used by Sony Alpha and Cyber-shot cameras. That distinction matters if your desktop workflow, presets or cataloging system was built around Sony’s interchangeable-lens cameras. DNG is broadly supported, but the camera’s metadata and the way an editor interprets the file can still vary by device.

A practical Xperia test

  1. Photograph the same stationary scene in AUTO, P, S and M where the model permits all four modes.
  2. Keep the lens and framing consistent. Include skin, fine fabric, foliage, a hard edge and a bright light source so sharpening, smoothing and highlight handling are visible.
  3. Make one set as JPEG or HEIF and another as DNG RAW if the model supports it.
  4. Inspect the files at 100 percent and at the size you normally share. Look for halos, smeared texture, clipped highlights and color changes rather than judging only the phone’s display preview.
  5. Repeat the test in low light and with a moving subject. A mode that looks restrained on a tripod may use stronger denoising or stacking when the light falls.

Samsung Expert RAW: manual parameters plus editable files

Samsung Japan’s Expert RAW support page, updated August 18, 2026, lists support for a range of Galaxy phones including the S26, S26+ and S26 Ultra. It documents an output consisting of a JPEG and a linear 16-bit DNG, along with controls for ISO, shutter speed, white balance, exposure and focus.

Why the JPEG-plus-DNG pair matters

The JPEG is immediately shareable; the DNG gives you a substantially more adjustable source for an editing workflow. Keeping both lets you compare the phone’s rendered interpretation with your own development. It also means every press of the shutter can create two files, so storage and backup requirements rise quickly.

What “linear 16-bit DNG” does not mean

Linear 16-bit describes the data structure and tonal representation, not a promise of untouched sensor output. Samsung identifies Expert RAW as an HDR RAW workflow. HDR capture can involve computational combination before the DNG is written, which may improve highlight and shadow detail while reducing the idea that the file is a completely neutral single exposure.

Using Expert RAW when you dislike automatic rendering

  1. Confirm that your exact Galaxy model appears in Samsung’s current Expert RAW support list; availability is not identical across all Galaxy devices or software versions.
  2. Open Expert RAW instead of assuming the standard Camera app has adopted the same controls.
  3. Set ISO, shutter speed, white balance, exposure compensation and focus deliberately for the scene.
  4. Capture the JPEG and DNG together, then compare the phone-rendered JPEG with a developed version of the DNG.
  5. Save an editing preset only after checking several lighting conditions. A setting that protects daylight skin tones may not suit tungsten light or a night scene.

Expert RAW is a good fit if you want to make the final rendering yourself. It is not evidence that a Galaxy’s everyday automatic JPEG is the least processed in its class.

iPhone ProRAW: more editing latitude, not no processing

Apple’s support guide “Take Apple ProRAW photos with your iPhone camera,” accessed October 13, 2026, documents ProRAW on supported Pro iPhones. Apple says the format combines standard RAW information with iPhone image processing and can provide latitude for adjusting exposure, color and white balance.

Important restriction

ProRAW is unavailable in Portrait mode. If you depend on Portrait mode’s depth effect, you cannot assume that enabling ProRAW will preserve that capture path. Choose between the portrait workflow and ProRAW for the particular image rather than expecting both at once.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When ProRAW is the sensible choice

  • You routinely correct white balance or recover exposure in an editor.
  • You prefer the iPhone’s camera, accessories and sharing workflow but find its automatic rendering difficult to fine-tune.
  • You are comfortable keeping larger files and spending time on development.

When it is the wrong expectation

Do not choose ProRAW because you want a file with every computational decision removed. Apple’s own description rules that out. ProRAW gives you more editing room while retaining iPhone processing; it does not turn the phone into a conventional camera recording an untouched sensor feed.

Default rendering, manual modes and RAW compared

Workflow Control over capture Control after capture Typical trade-off
Automatic JPEG or HEIF Lowest; the phone selects most exposure and rendering decisions. Limited to what the compressed rendered file retains. Fast sharing and small, convenient files versus less ability to undo sharpening, smoothing or tone mapping.
Manual JPEG or HEIF Higher; shutter, ISO, white balance, focus or exposure may be user-selected depending on the app. Still limited by the rendered file and the app’s processing pipeline. More predictable capture without the storage and editing burden of RAW.
RAW or RAW-derived capture Often paired with manual controls, but the phone may still apply computational steps. Highest latitude for exposure, color and white-balance adjustments. Larger files, editing time and no guarantee of a neutral, unprocessed image.

How to choose based on the effect you dislike

If you mainly dislike sharpening

Compare fine edges and hair in unedited files from the exact phone and software version. Use a camera mode that allows you to control capture, then inspect whether the JPEG still shows halos. If the rendered file remains too crisp, RAW gives you the option to apply gentler sharpening during development.

If you mainly dislike skin smoothing

Use a real person rather than a mannequin or a static test chart. Compare pores, hair, eyelashes and fabric under even light. Check both the normal camera and any portrait or face-focused mode. A phone can have restrained general rendering but a stronger face pipeline in a specialized mode.

If you dislike HDR “flatness” or glowing shadows

Photograph a scene with a bright window and a shaded subject. Look at highlight texture and shadow color. Manual exposure can reduce the camera’s tendency to lift every dark area, but it cannot guarantee that the app will stop merging frames. A single-frame or RAW workflow may give you a more predictable starting point, at the cost of clipped highlights or more editing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you dislike night-mode artifacts

Test a moving person, leaves or traffic rather than only a stationary building. Multi-frame night processing can create ghosting or repeated edges. A faster shutter and higher ISO may look grainier but preserve motion more honestly; whether that option is available depends on the phone and camera app.

If you want to avoid generated edits

Keep capture and post-capture editing separate. A phone can produce a conventional JPEG without you using a generative removal tool, while an editor can later add or remove content. Check the app’s editing screen before exporting and keep the original capture so you can distinguish rendering from a later alteration.

A repeatable comparison method before you buy

Because no controlled ranking establishes which current phone applies the least processing, your own sample comparison is more useful than a slogan such as “natural camera.” Ask a retailer, friend or reviewer for files from the exact model and software version, or make your own samples during a return period where local rules allow it.

  1. Match the scene: Use the same subject, distance, focal length and lighting. Include skin, fabric, foliage, text, a high-contrast edge and a bright highlight.
  2. Record the mode: Note whether each file came from the default camera, a manual mode, a computational mode or RAW. Do not compare a phone’s RAW against another phone’s automatic JPEG and call it a camera ranking.
  3. Check motion: Photograph a walking person or moving hand. This reveals frame-merging artifacts that a static chart hides.
  4. Inspect two viewing sizes: Check the image at normal sharing size for overall rendering and at 100 percent for texture, halos and smearing.
  5. Evaluate lenses separately: A phone may render its main camera naturally but use more aggressive processing on its ultrawide or telephoto camera. Compare each lens you expect to use.
  6. Repeat after updates: Camera software can change rendering. Record the operating-system and camera-app versions with your samples.
  7. Judge the file you will actually keep: If you never edit, prioritize the default JPEG or HEIF. If you always develop RAW, compare the RAW workflow, compatible software and time required.

Low-light, lens and workflow trade-offs

Reducing visible processing often means accepting another imperfection. A darker exposure can preserve highlight shape but hide shadow detail. A faster shutter can preserve motion but increase noise. A single frame can avoid ghosting but show more grain than a multi-frame night mode. A RAW file can preserve editing latitude but still contain HDR or other computational decisions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Lens consistency also matters. A phone’s main camera, ultrawide and telephoto modules have different apertures, sensors and optical designs. Comparing only the main lens can conceal the processing you will see when you zoom, photograph architecture or work in dim light. Include the focal lengths you actually use in your test.

Editing ability is part of the purchase decision. ProRAW and Expert RAW are useful only if your computer, tablet or phone editor can open the files and you are willing to make the adjustments. If you want to share immediately, a slightly more processed JPEG may be preferable to an unedited RAW file that looks flat or inconsistent.

Common mistakes when shopping for a “natural” camera phone

  • Treating megapixels as a processing measurement: Resolution does not tell you how much sharpening, denoising or HDR blending the camera applies.
  • Assuming manual equals unprocessed: Manual exposure changes capture decisions; it does not automatically disable rendering.
  • Assuming RAW equals untouched: Apple explicitly describes ProRAW as retaining iPhone processing, and Samsung describes Expert RAW as HDR RAW.
  • Comparing screenshots: A phone display, social network or messaging app may resize and recompress the image. Request the original file.
  • Ignoring software versions: Camera output can change after an update, so identify the version used for every sample.
  • Testing only an easy daylight scene: Strong processing is often most visible in faces, foliage, night scenes, high-contrast lighting and moving subjects.
  • Expecting one setting to suit every scene: A rendering that looks subdued in daylight may become muddy in a dark room, while a low-light mode may introduce motion artifacts.

Which phone should you buy?

Choose a Sony Xperia with Photo Pro if…

Your priority is direct control over exposure and focus and you are prepared to verify model-specific features. The documented AUTO, P, S, M and, where available, MR modes make Xperia the clearest candidate for photographers who want a camera-like operating model. Choose it for control, not as proof of the least processed automatic JPEG.

Choose a Galaxy that supports Expert RAW if…

You want a broad flagship system and a documented workflow that records a JPEG plus linear 16-bit DNG while exposing ISO, shutter, white balance, exposure and focus controls. The S26 series is listed by Samsung as supported in the August 18, 2026 documentation. Expect to edit the DNG if you want a different rendering, and remember that Expert RAW is an HDR RAW workflow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a supported iPhone Pro if…

You prefer Apple’s ecosystem and sharing experience but want more control over exposure, color and white balance after capture. ProRAW is the relevant format, with the specific limitation that it is unavailable in Portrait mode and still includes iPhone processing.

Choose none of them on marketing language alone if…

Your requirement is literally “no AI.” That phrase is too broad to map to a camera specification. First decide whether you object to sharpening, smoothing, HDR, scene recognition, night stacking or generative editing, then compare original files from the exact phones and software versions you are considering.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a phone that takes completely unprocessed photos?

No documented candidate here makes that promise. Ordinary JPEG and HEIF files are rendered outputs, and the documented RAW formats can retain computational processing. The realistic goal is more control and a rendering you prefer.

Does turning off an AI or scene feature make a JPEG natural?

It may remove one visible effect, but it does not establish that sharpening, denoising, HDR or tone mapping have stopped. Evaluate the resulting original file rather than relying on a feature label.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Are Xperia DNG files the same as Sony camera ARW files?

No. Sony’s support documentation says Xperia phones use DNG RAW, while Sony Alpha and Cyber-shot cameras use ARW. Confirm compatibility with your editing software before building a workflow around the files.

Can I use ProRAW in Portrait mode?

Apple’s support documentation says ProRAW is unavailable in Portrait mode. Use the appropriate capture mode for the image you are making.

Why does my RAW file still look processed?

RAW can include demosaicing, lens corrections, HDR combination or other computational steps, and your editor applies a preview profile when it opens the file. RAW gives you more latitude; it does not guarantee that every stage before the file was written was bypassed.

Bottom line

Buy for the degree of control you will actually use. Sony Xperia Photo Pro is the strongest fit for hands-on exposure and focus control; Samsung Expert RAW is a documented JPEG-plus-DNG workflow for Galaxy users willing to edit; and iPhone ProRAW offers editing latitude inside the iPhone system while explicitly retaining processing. None is a proven “least AI” phone. Compare original samples for the specific artifacts you dislike, using the exact model and software version, and choose the workflow whose trade-offs you can live with.
