If you need dependable speech, event sound, or a mixer feed as well as high-resolution video, choose a camcorder for its complete audio workflow—not an unverified claim about its built-in microphone. Panasonic’s HC-X20, HC-X1500, HC-X2000 and AG-CX350 provide dual XLR inputs with selectable line, microphone and 48 V phantom-power modes, while Canon’s XF605 adds four-channel linear PCM and independent channel controls. The right choice depends on your microphone, power requirements, monitoring, video outputs and shooting situation.
What “excellent microphone features” actually means
Camcorder specifications can establish how a camera accepts, powers, monitors and records audio. They do not, by themselves, establish that an internal microphone sounds excellent. The manufacturer pages for the models covered here do not provide standardized frequency-response curves, self-noise measurements or controlled speech comparisons for their built-in microphones.

Separate these two questions when shopping:
- Capture quality: How well a microphone handles the subject, distance, room noise and handling.
- Connectivity and control: Whether the camera accepts the microphone or mixer output you already use, supplies the required power, lets you set levels correctly and provides headphone monitoring.
An internal stereo microphone is useful for quick clips and reference sound. For interviews, ceremonies, stage events or production dialogue, the ability to connect a suitable external microphone close to the subject usually matters more than the presence of a built-in stereo capsule. XLR terminals are valuable because they accept common professional microphones and balanced feeds; selectable 48 V is relevant only to microphones that require phantom power. Check the microphone’s own power specification before enabling it.

Camcorder choices in detail
Panasonic HC-X20: a straightforward dual-XLR handheld
The HC-X20 combines a stereo internal microphone with two XLR inputs. Each input can be switched among LINE, MIC and MIC+48 V, so you can connect a professional microphone or a compatible line-level source and provide phantom power when the microphone calls for it. A headphone output supports live monitoring.
Its HDMI specifications include 4:2:2 10-bit output formats, including 2160p modes. These are output capabilities; do not interpret them as proof that every internal recording mode is 10-bit 4:2:2. If your workflow records to an external device, confirm the exact frame-rate and output combination you need in the current regional specification.
The HC-X20 is a sensible fit when one operator wants a relatively compact camcorder but does not want to give up balanced audio inputs. Plan for the microphone, XLR cable, headphones, batteries and media in addition to the camera.
See Panasonic’s complete model specification for connector and format details: HC-X20 features and specifications.
Panasonic HC-X1500: compact production connectivity
The HC-X1500 lists two XLR inputs with selectable line, microphone and 48 V modes, plus a headphone output. Its video specifications list HDMI 2160p output formats and SDI output, which can be important when the camera must connect to a field monitor, switcher or longer cable run.
Accessory configuration deserves special attention. A package sold under the same model name may not include every handle or audio accessory you expect. Verify the exact regional bundle, detachable handle, microphone holder and other hardware before ordering. If you intend to mount a shotgun microphone on the camera, make sure the holder and handle arrangement in your package supports that setup.
The HC-X1500 suits a shooter who values a small body and production-style outputs. It is less suitable if you need a self-contained studio camera with extensive built-in routing; check the actual connector and control layout against your operating position.

Panasonic HC-X2000: the bundled-handle question
The HC-X2000 has the same listed dual-XLR workflow as the HC-X1500: line, microphone and 48 V selections, with headphone monitoring. Its HDMI specifications list 2160p formats and its connections include SDI output.
The practical distinction may be the supplied equipment. Panasonic’s accessory list for the HC-X2000 includes a detachable handle unit and microphone holder. Those pieces can save a separate purchase and make a top-mounted microphone easier to use, but confirm the contents of the exact package offered in your country.

Panasonic AG-CX350: a production-oriented UHD option
The AG-CX350 is aimed at more demanding production and live workflows. It has two XLR inputs with line, microphone and 48 V settings and a headphone output. Panasonic lists UHD recording, selectable 4:2:2 10-bit recording formats, dual card slots and live-streaming protocols in its professional specifications.
Those features matter when you need robust media handling, higher-bit-depth acquisition options or direct integration with a live system. Check the precise recording mode, frame rate, card requirement and output behavior for your project; “4:2:2 10-bit” is not a blanket description of every mode.
The AG-CX350 is a better starting point than a basic handheld when your checklist includes two-card recording, live delivery or a production chain that already uses SDI and networked video. It can be unnecessary complexity for casual family footage or short social clips.

Canon XF605: four-channel audio flexibility
The XF605 accepts audio through two XLR terminals, a stereo mini-jack or its internal stereo microphone. Canon specifies four-channel linear PCM recording and says that level, input sensitivity and limiter settings can be configured independently for each channel. This is useful when you need, for example, a camera-mounted microphone on one pair of channels and a second source or feed on another.
Canon also describes a 1.0-inch sensor, 15x optical zoom, HDR support and 12G-SDI and HDMI workflows. Those are relevant to professional acquisition and live connections, but they do not establish a comparative image-quality winner. Match the camera’s output and recording modes to your editor, switcher or archive requirements.
The XF605 is the strongest fit here when channel separation and per-channel control are more important than keeping the smallest possible handheld package. Confirm how your chosen mini-jack source is wired and whether its level is appropriate before connecting it alongside XLR inputs.

Match the audio workflow to the camera
Interviews and spoken presentations
Put the microphone as close to the speaker as practical. A lavalier connected to an XLR input can keep the voice consistent while the subject moves; a camera-mounted shotgun is more convenient but becomes less effective as the distance increases. Use the camera’s headphone output during a rehearsal and while recording. Listen for clothing rub, air-conditioning noise, cable crackle and overload rather than relying on meters alone.
For a single speaker, one clean channel is usually more valuable than filling every available channel. You can reserve a second channel for a backup source if your camera and microphone arrangement support it. On the XF605, independent channel settings make that split workflow explicit. On the Panasonic models, set each XLR input to the correct source type and use 48 V only for a microphone that requires it.
Stage events and ceremonies
A venue mixer may provide a line-level output, while a microphone connected directly to the camera produces a microphone-level signal. Select LINE for a genuine line feed and MIC for a microphone-level source. If the venue feed is unusually hot or uses a connector adapter, ask the sound operator for its nominal level and test before the event.

Everything you need to start creating, right out of the box
Live production and streaming
Audio is only one part of a live chain. Check the camera’s video output, the switcher’s accepted signal, cable length, power plan, media behavior and network requirements. The HC-X1500, HC-X2000 and AG-CX350 list SDI or live-streaming-related capabilities, but compatibility still depends on the rest of the system.
Use headphones at the camera position or at the mixing point. A clean meter reading does not reveal a dead microphone, wrong source selection or a delayed feed. If the destination needs embedded audio over SDI or HDMI, verify the routing and channel count in the camera and downstream equipment.
Run-and-gun and travel recording
For fast-moving work, the internal stereo microphone may be adequate for notes, reference sound or informal clips. The moment the camera is farther from the subject, wind protection, microphone placement and monitoring become more important than a model’s marketing description.

Comparison checklist before you buy
| Feature to verify | Questions to answer | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Audio inputs | How many XLR inputs are present? Is there a 3.5 mm input? Can you choose line or microphone level? | Determines whether the camera connects directly to your microphone, receiver or mixer. |
| Phantom power | Is 48 V available, and can it be enabled for the required input? | Some professional microphones need phantom power; others use batteries or do not tolerate it. |
| Channel control | Can levels, sensitivity and limiters be set independently? How many channels are recorded? | Separate control helps when sources have different loudness or you want a safety track. |
| Monitoring | Is there a headphone output, and can you select the channels you hear? | Lets you detect faults while there is still time to fix them. |
| Video recording | Which UHD or 4K frame rates, bit depths, chroma formats and HDR modes are available internally? | Ensures the files match your editor, delivery specification and grading needs. |
| Video outputs | Does the camera provide the HDMI or SDI format your monitor, recorder or switcher accepts? | Output capability affects live production and external recording, and may differ from internal recording. |
| Operation | Will the body, viewfinder, display, zoom range and manual controls suit the way you shoot? | A feature-rich camera is not useful if it slows framing or audio adjustments. |
| Media and power | How many card slots are there, which media speed is required and how long will batteries last in your use? | Events and long takes need a reliable recording and power plan. |
| Included accessories | Are the handle, microphone holder, battery, charger and cables included in this exact regional SKU? | Missing hardware changes the real setup cost and whether you can mount a microphone immediately. |
Set up an external microphone safely
- Identify the source. Write down whether it is a microphone output, wireless receiver output or mixer line feed. Confirm the connector and nominal level.
- Choose the input. Use an XLR input for a balanced professional connection. Use the stereo mini-jack only when the source and wiring are designed for it.
- Select the level mode. Set LINE for a line-level feed and MIC for a microphone-level feed. Use MIC+48 V only when the connected microphone requires phantom power.
- Connect with the camera and source levels low. Insert the cable fully, then raise the camera input level while watching meters and listening on headphones.
- Set a conservative peak level. Leave headroom for loud words, applause or music. If the camera offers a limiter, understand its behavior before relying on it for an entire event.
- Monitor a test recording. Play back a short clip through headphones and check both channels, not just the meter display.
- Secure the cable and power plan. Tape or route the cable so it cannot strike the microphone or controls. Carry charged batteries and a tested spare cable for long sessions.
Never enable phantom power indiscriminately. Some microphones use their own battery, and some adapters or consumer accessories are not designed for 48 V. When in doubt, check the microphone and adapter documentation first.
Video specifications that affect the audio decision
Audio and video choices are coupled in real projects. If you are recording for a broadcaster or a live switcher, an SDI connection may be more useful than a higher internal recording specification. If you are grading footage, a selectable 4:2:2 10-bit mode can matter more than the internal microphone because it affects how much color information survives the workflow.
The HC-X20 lists HDMI output formats including 4:2:2 10-bit 2160p modes. The HC-X1500 and HC-X2000 list HDMI 2160p formats and SDI output. Panasonic lists UHD recording and selectable 4:2:2 10-bit formats for the AG-CX350. Canon describes the XF605 with a 1.0-inch sensor, 15x optical zoom, HDR and 12G-SDI/HDMI. Treat each item as a compatibility point: confirm the exact frame rate, bit depth, chroma format and connector behavior for the mode you intend to use.

Troubleshooting common audio failures
No audio on one channel
Check the cable, connector seating, channel assignment and whether the source is plugged into the input you configured. On a two-source setup, test each input separately and play back the recording before changing several settings at once.
Severe distortion
The input may be set to MIC while receiving a line-level feed, or the source may be too loud for the selected sensitivity. Switch to the correct level mode, lower the source output and repeat a headphone-monitored test. A limiter can reduce peaks but cannot restore clipped audio.
Hiss or weak speech
The microphone may be too far from the subject, the input gain may be excessive or a low-output source may need an appropriate preamp or powered adapter. Move the microphone closer first, then adjust gain while monitoring. Do not assume that turning up the camera gain will produce clean speech.
Hum, buzz or intermittent crackle
Inspect the cable and adapters, separate audio cables from power supplies where practical and test on battery power to isolate a grounding issue. If the noise follows one cable or channel, replace that component before the event.
External microphone is silent with 48 V enabled
Confirm that the microphone actually requires phantom power, that the camera input is set to MIC+48 V and that the cable is wired correctly. Battery-powered microphones and some adapters have different requirements; follow their documentation rather than leaving phantom power on by default.
Which camcorder should you choose?
- Choose the HC-X20 if you want a compact 4K-capable handheld with two XLR inputs and straightforward line, mic and phantom-power selection.
- Choose the HC-X1500 if compact size plus HDMI 2160p and SDI connectivity fits your production kit, and you have confirmed the handle and accessory arrangement.
- Choose the HC-X2000 if the detachable handle and microphone holder included in the documented accessory list are useful to your operation, subject to local package contents.
- Choose the AG-CX350 if UHD production, selectable 4:2:2 10-bit formats, dual-card operation or live-streaming connectivity justify a more production-focused body.
- Choose the XF605 if four-channel linear PCM and independent per-channel controls are central to a multi-source workflow, and you need the documented 1.0-inch, 15x-zoom and 12G-SDI/HDMI feature set.
The dependable purchase is the one that matches your microphone’s connector and power, the level of your audio feed, your monitoring practice and the video format accepted by your destination. Built-in microphone convenience is useful, but the camera’s input modes, channel controls and complete production compatibility determine whether you can obtain consistently usable sound.
