Fortnite is the best free online substitute for Call of Duty on Nintendo Switch 2. It combines competitive shooting, cross-platform play, 60 fps performance on Switch 2, higher TV and handheld resolutions than the original Switch version, and optional Joy-Con 2 mouse controls. If you want a traditional first-person shooter instead, choose DOOM; for a retro-style campaign with co-op and competitive modes, choose Prodeus; for co-op and loot progression, choose Borderlands Legendary Collection; and for a darker, story-led campaign, choose Metro 2033 Redux.
Nintendo’s current upcoming-games catalogue also lists Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 for Switch 2 with a 16 October 2026 date. Because release listings, regional storefronts and compatibility information can change, check Nintendo’s listing for your region before treating that date as confirmed availability. The alternatives below are useful either while you wait or if you want a different kind of shooter.

Which Call of Duty alternative should you choose?
The right replacement depends on the part of Call of Duty you miss. No single Switch 2 game duplicates its competitive multiplayer, campaign, weapon progression and tone at the same time. Use this quick match before reading the detailed breakdown:
| If you want… | Choose… | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Free competitive online shooting | Fortnite | Free-to-play battle royale, cross-platform play, 60 fps on Switch 2 and optional Joy-Con 2 mouse controls. |
| Direct first-person gunplay | DOOM | A first-person shooter built around fast, brutal arcade action. |
| A replayable retro-FPS package | Prodeus | Hand-crafted campaign, co-op, competitive multiplayer and a built-in community map browser. |
| Co-op and loot progression | Borderlands Legendary Collection | A campaign-focused loot shooter designed for cooperative play. |
| A dark, story-led campaign | Metro 2033 Redux | First-person survival-horror atmosphere rather than colorful competitive play. |
Perspective and structure matter. Fortnite is a third-person battle royale, while DOOM, Prodeus and Metro 2033 Redux are first-person games. Borderlands Legendary Collection is also built around first-person shooting, but its defining feature is cooperative loot progression rather than a competitive military match format.

Fortnite: the clearest free online substitute
What makes it the closest free multiplayer option?
Fortnite is the strongest answer to “Is there a free multiplayer shooter like Call of Duty on Switch 2?” Nintendo lists it as free-to-play with online multiplayer and cross-platform play. That means you can compete with people on other supported platforms instead of being limited to Switch 2 owners. Its battle-royale structure is not the same as a traditional team deathmatch or round-based military shooter, but it provides the same broad reasons many players return to Call of Duty: short competitive matches, weapon handling, positioning, squad coordination and a large online population.
The major difference is perspective and presentation. Fortnite is a third-person battle royale, so you normally see your character on screen rather than looking through a first-person view. Matches emphasize survival, movement, looting and the closing play area. Choose it when “online competition” matters more than reproducing Call of Duty’s exact military tone or first-person camera.
Switch 2-specific features
- 60 fps: Nintendo’s current Switch 2 product listing states 60 frames per second.
- Higher display resolutions: Nintendo lists higher TV and handheld resolutions on Switch 2 than on the original Switch version.
- Cross-platform play: You can play online with users on other supported platforms.
- Joy-Con 2 mouse controls: Nintendo lists optional mouse-style controls, giving you an alternative to conventional stick aiming.
The 60 fps figure is the only performance number established for this comparison. It is a product-listing specification, not a promise that every mode, visual setting or network condition will behave identically. Connection quality, matchmaking and online-service availability can still affect how a match feels.

Fortnite is a poor fit if your priority is a linear campaign, a strictly first-person camera or a gritty military presentation. It is also not a paid, self-contained campaign purchase: the core game is free-to-play, while optional in-game content follows its own model. If you mainly want to progress through missions alone, start with DOOM or Metro 2033 Redux instead.
DOOM: the most direct first-person replacement
Why it matches the gunplay request
Among these choices, DOOM is the cleanest answer to “What is the best FPS on Switch 2?” Nintendo’s eShop explicitly identifies it as a first-person shooter. Its design is centered on aggressive movement, close-range encounters and constant shooting rather than battle-royale survival or loot collection. That makes it the most direct substitute when the part of Call of Duty you miss is simply being inside a fast first-person firefight.
Nintendo’s eShop describes it as “a brutally fun and challenging modern-day shooter experience” and credits id Software as the developer. That wording captures the game’s tone: it is intentionally intense and arcade-like, not a realistic military simulation. Expect demons, exaggerated weapons and a more relentless rhythm than a conventional contemporary-war campaign.
How its campaign differs from Call of Duty
DOOM is campaign-led rather than a documented free online competitive replacement in this comparison. Its appeal is a focused solo experience with the first-person perspective and immediate weapon action that Call of Duty campaigns are known for. The trade-off is that you should not buy it expecting the same suite of seasonal multiplayer systems, cross-platform matchmaking or military loadout progression associated with Call of Duty.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoose DOOM when your decision is based on first-person shooting feel. Choose Fortnite when your decision is based on free online competition. Those are different needs, and the games serve them differently.

What to check before buying
- Open the Nintendo eShop listing for your region and confirm the Switch 2 compatibility status.
- Check whether the edition shown is the one you intend to purchase; regional storefronts can present different listings.
- Confirm that the game’s current update is installed before judging performance or controls.
Prodeus: the deepest retro-FPS package
What is included?
Prodeus is the best choice if you want more than a short campaign. Nintendo’s listing states: “Prodeus is a first-person shooter of old, re-imagined using modern rendering techniques and technology.” The same listing describes a hand-crafted campaign, co-op, competitive multiplayer and a built-in community map browser.
That combination gives Prodeus the broadest replay structure documented here. You can work through the authored campaign, replay it with another player in co-op, compete in multiplayer, and then move to community-created maps. It is still a retro-inspired shooter, so its visual style and challenge are deliberately different from Call of Duty’s modern presentation.
When it is a better fit than DOOM
DOOM is the cleaner recommendation for a straightforward, high-impact first-person campaign. Prodeus is the better recommendation when you want a package that keeps generating things to play after the campaign. The community map browser is especially important: it gives the game a user-created-content layer that the more linear alternatives do not document.
Its competitive and co-op modes also make it more flexible for a household that wants both solo and shared play. However, no current official listing establishes player counts, matchmaking population, frame-rate figures or regional pricing. Treat those as publication-time checks rather than assumptions.
How to decide if the retro style works for you
- Pick Prodeus if you enjoy fast movement, old-school level design and replayable combat arenas.
- Pick DOOM if you want the most direct modern first-person shooter identity.
- Pick Fortnite if playing with a broad cross-platform audience matters more than campaign structure.
Borderlands Legendary Collection: co-op and loot progression
Why it suits Call of Duty players who play with friends
Borderlands Legendary Collection is the strongest alternative here for players who associate Call of Duty with cooperative sessions and long-term weapon progression. It is a loot shooter: you fight through campaign content, collect equipment and improve your character and arsenal over time. That progression loop creates a different reason to keep playing than Fortnite’s match-based battle royale or DOOM’s direct arcade campaign.
Co-op is the central recommendation. If your ideal evening is joining friends, clearing missions and comparing drops rather than competing in a shrinking battle-royale arena, this collection is the natural fit. Its tone is also distinct: expect a stylized, colorful world rather than Call of Duty’s military realism or Metro’s oppressive survival-horror atmosphere.
What it does not replicate
The collection is not a like-for-like replacement for competitive Call of Duty multiplayer. The documented fit is co-op and loot progression, not a confirmed package of ranked team modes, cross-platform play or Switch 2-specific performance figures. Do not infer those features from the fact that the game is a shooter.
It is also a paid software choice. Exact regional prices and physical-card availability were not established, so check the Nintendo eShop or a current retailer listing in your country before purchase.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

Best use case
Choose Borderlands Legendary Collection when your priority order is friends first, campaign second, loot progression third. If your priority order is competitive matchmaking first, Fortnite is the better match. If it is solo first-person intensity first, DOOM or Metro 2033 Redux will be more focused.
Metro 2033 Redux: a darker story-led campaign
Why it belongs on this list
Metro 2033 Redux is the alternative for players asking, “Which Switch 2 game has a Call of Duty-style campaign?” Its fit is not military multiplayer; it is a first-person, story-led campaign with a darker survival-horror atmosphere. The game is better suited to someone who wants tension, exploration and narrative progression than to someone seeking quick competitive rounds.
Compared with DOOM, Metro is slower and more atmospheric. Compared with Fortnite, it is not a free online battle royale. Compared with Borderlands, it is not primarily a loot-progression co-op shooter. Its value is concentration: a campaign you play for its setting and mood as much as for its weapons.

Comparison: perspective, modes and tone
| Game | Perspective | Primary structure | Campaign or replay focus | Online features documented | Price model |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fortnite | Third-person | Battle royale | Competitive matches and squad play | Online multiplayer, cross-platform play, optional Joy-Con 2 mouse controls | Free-to-play |

| Prodeus | First-person | Retro FPS | Hand-crafted campaign plus community maps | Co-op and competitive multiplayer | Paid software |
| Borderlands Legendary Collection | First-person | Loot shooter | Co-op campaign and gear progression | Co-op | Paid software |
| Metro 2033 Redux | First-person | Story-led survival horror | Dark, narrative campaign | Campaign-led play | Paid software |
The table separates documented features from assumptions. For example, “paid software” does not imply a particular regional price, and “online multiplayer” does not imply that every title offers cross-platform play. Only Fortnite’s cross-platform feature is specifically established here.
How these games compare with Call of Duty’s main attractions
Competitive multiplayer
Fortnite is the closest match because it is built around online competition and supports cross-platform play. Its battle-royale rules change the pacing: survival, looting and the closing play area replace the fixed objectives and round formats associated with many Call of Duty modes. Prodeus offers competitive multiplayer, but its retro-FPS identity and documented community-map support make it a different kind of online experience.
First-person gunplay
DOOM is the most direct replacement. Prodeus also stays firmly in first person, but it intentionally recreates an older shooter style. Metro 2033 Redux uses the first-person perspective for a slower, more atmospheric campaign. Borderlands uses first-person shooting as part of a larger loot-and-progression loop.
Campaign play
DOOM and Metro 2033 Redux are the clearest campaign-led choices, with sharply different tones. DOOM is brutal and arcade-like; Metro is dark and survival-oriented. Prodeus adds a hand-crafted campaign while also supporting co-op, competitive multiplayer and community maps. Borderlands Legendary Collection adds co-op and loot progression to its campaign structure.

Long-term progression
Borderlands Legendary Collection is the clearest fit for collecting gear and developing a character over repeated sessions. Prodeus extends replayability through its community map browser. Fortnite’s replay loop is competitive matches and online seasons rather than a conventional campaign. DOOM and Metro are better selected for the quality of a focused campaign than for an endless progression system.

Legacy Switch ports can behave differently on Switch 2 depending on the title and its updates. No current official listing establishes confirmed Switch 2 performance for every game in this list, so use the following process before spending money:
- Open the regional Nintendo listing. Search for the exact game and edition in the eShop for your country, not a listing from another region.
- Read the compatibility and update notes. Check whether the page identifies Switch 2 support, an upgrade path or a required update.
- Confirm the edition. Collections and Redux versions can have different listings from standalone releases. Make sure the title on the purchase screen matches the version you intend to play.
- Check the mode you need. Look for the specific wording that matters to you: online multiplayer, cross-platform play, co-op, competitive multiplayer, campaign or community maps.
- Verify the current date and availability. Store pages, release dates and physical stock are volatile. A game listed in one region may not be listed in another.
- Install updates before evaluating it. A launch build or unpatched legacy port may not represent the current Switch 2 experience.
Fortnite is the exception to the paid-purchase decision because Nintendo lists the core game as free-to-play. The other listed campaign games are paid software, but exact regional prices are not confirmed by current official listings.

What about Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 on Switch 2?
Nintendo’s upcoming-games catalogue lists Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 for Switch 2 with a 16 October 2026 date. This article is dated October 2026, so the listed date has arrived; however, a catalogue date alone is not a substitute for checking the live regional store page. Confirm whether the game is actually available in your country, whether the listing changed, and whether a day-one update or specific edition is required.
That listing changes how to interpret the alternatives. Fortnite, DOOM, Prodeus, Borderlands Legendary Collection and Metro 2033 Redux are not being presented as permanent replacements for a game that is already confirmed everywhere. They are practical choices for the interim, for regions where availability differs, or for players who prefer a free battle royale, a pure arcade FPS, retro replayability, co-op loot progression or a darker campaign.
A decision path for five common player types
You want to spend nothing first
Start with Fortnite. It is the only free-to-play option documented here, and Nintendo lists online multiplayer, cross-platform play, 60 fps on Switch 2, higher TV and handheld resolutions and optional Joy-Con 2 mouse controls.
You want the closest first-person shooting sensation
Choose DOOM. Nintendo explicitly categorizes it as a first-person shooter, and its design is built around direct, aggressive gunplay rather than battle-royale survival or loot collection.

You want one purchase with the most replay modes
Choose Prodeus. Its documented combination of a hand-crafted campaign, co-op, competitive multiplayer and a community map browser gives it the broadest variety of ways to play in this group.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
You mainly play with a regular co-op partner
Choose Borderlands Legendary Collection. Its defining fit is cooperative campaign play combined with loot progression, making it more suitable than the competitive-first options for a shared, ongoing run.
You want a serious single-player atmosphere
Choose Metro 2033 Redux. Its value is a dark, story-led first-person campaign rather than a free online service or an arcade score chase.
Common buying mistakes
Assuming every shooter is a Call of Duty substitute
A first-person camera does not guarantee similar pacing or modes. DOOM, Prodeus, Borderlands and Metro all use first-person shooting, but they serve different purposes: arcade combat, retro replayability, co-op loot progression and survival-horror storytelling.

Fortnite is the free competitive option, not the campaign replacement. Its third-person battle-royale structure is the central difference you should accept before downloading it.
Using performance claims from one game for another
Nintendo’s 60 fps statement applies to the current Fortnite Switch 2 listing. It does not establish a frame rate for DOOM, Prodeus, Borderlands Legendary Collection or Metro 2033 Redux. Verify each title’s current compatibility and update information separately.
Relying on a release date without checking the store
The 16 October 2026 Modern Warfare 4 date comes from Nintendo’s catalogue and should be rechecked against the live regional listing. The same caution applies to digital editions, physical stock and compatibility notices for older ports.
Bottom line
For most Switch 2 owners, the recommendation is simple: download Fortnite for free online competition, buy DOOM for direct first-person action, choose Prodeus for the richest retro-FPS feature set, pick Borderlands Legendary Collection for co-op loot progression, and select Metro 2033 Redux for a dark campaign. Check Nintendo’s regional listings and current updates before buying, and verify the status of Modern Warfare 4 rather than relying on its catalogue date alone.
