How its cross-play matchmaking works
EA documents cross-play among PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Friends can find one another through EA Connect and send party invitations. Console matchmaking is prioritized for console players; PC players are brought into the pool when there are not enough console players to fill a match. That policy is different from Apex Legends, so a mixed group should understand it before choosing this game.

The PC-console matchmaking rule
Console players normally match with other console players. When a console player joins a party containing a PC player, the entire party is placed into PC matches. This protects the normal console pool while making mixed parties possible, but it also means a console-only group and a console-plus-PC group can face different opponents.
Cost and account considerations
Apex Legends is free to download and includes in-game purchases. Platform account, online-service or subscription requirements can vary by system and region, so check each console storefront’s current terms. Best free competitive alternative: THE FINALS
THE FINALS is a team shooter built for players who want objective-focused competition without returning to Call of Duty. Embark lists cross-play for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S and says it is enabled by default. The game also supports cross-progression through an Embark ID, which is separate from simply allowing friends on different systems into the same match.

You can turn cross-play off, but Embark warns that doing so may increase queue times. A small group should leave it enabled unless everyone has a specific reason to avoid mixed-platform matchmaking. Before inviting friends, confirm that each person has linked the intended platform account to the correct Embark ID; cross-play and cross-progression depend on account configuration as well as hardware.

Who should choose it
- Pick it for a current-generation PC/PS5/Xbox Series group that wants a free-to-start trial.
- Skip it as the first recommendation if someone is on PlayStation 4, Xbox One or Switch; those systems are not listed in the cited support page.

When the group wants a different genre
Fortnite: the most flexible shared platform
Epic identifies Fortnite as a cross-play game and highlights several distinct experiences, including battle royale, racing and LEGO Fortnite. The exact supported platform and mode combination still depends on the current Fortnite support matrix.
Epic announced on September 3, 2026 that Epic Parties can connect voice chat across Fortnite on supported platforms, the Epic Games Store accessed from PC, Mac, iOS and Android, and Epic mobile apps. Epic’s announcement says: “You can now party up and voice chat with friends across Fortnite (on all supported platforms), Epic Games Store (available from epicgames.com on PC, Mac, iOS, Android), and the Epic Games app (available on the iOS App Store and Android Google Play Store).” Accepted invites can place friends in the same Fortnite lobby. Rocket League: competitive, but not a shooter
Rocket League is a useful reset when everyone still wants short competitive matches but is tired of weapons. Epic lists it as cross-play. The objective is vehicle-based football, so communication is simpler and a loss usually feels less like another military firefight. Because the available source is a general cross-play explainer, verify the current platform list and party restrictions for your exact systems before scheduling a session.

Fall Guys: casual party sessions
Fall Guys is another Epic-listed cross-play game, built around obstacle courses and elimination rounds. It is the better choice for a mixed-skill group that wants social play rather than a high-intensity shooter. Platform support and account requirements can change, so use the current in-game invite flow to confirm that everyone can join.

Action-focused alternatives: Destiny 2 and Warframe
Epic’s cross-play explainer names Destiny 2 and Warframe as examples that support both cross-play and cross-save. Those labels are useful starting points, not a guarantee that every activity, expansion or platform pairing behaves identically.
Destiny 2
Destiny 2 fits groups that want cooperative missions, character progression and occasional competitive modes rather than a single battle-royale loop. Check the current platform list, account linking and activity-specific restrictions before promising that a friend can join every session. Expansions and seasonal content may also affect what the party can access together.
Warframe
Warframe is a free-to-play cooperative action option for a group that prefers missions, gear collection and long-term progression. Cross-save is distinct from cross-play: a shared account progression feature does not, by itself, prove that every platform can join the same activity. Confirm the current party and progression rules for each player’s account.

Rainbow Six Siege is the natural genre choice for a group that wants deliberate, round-based tactics rather than fast respawns. Ubisoft confirms cross-play and automatic cross-progression on supported platforms. However, the support page does not expose enough platform detail to state confidently that a particular PC, PlayStation or Xbox combination will work under every matchmaking rule.

Use Ubisoft’s cross-play and cross-progression article as the final check. Do not buy the game on the assumption that “cross-play” automatically covers your group’s exact console generation or PC pairing.
How to choose without wasting a download or purchase
- Write down every platform and generation. “Xbox” is not precise enough; record Xbox One versus Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 4 versus PlayStation 5.
- Remove incompatible games. A title that excludes one friend’s hardware is not a group solution, regardless of genre.
- Choose the desired match shape. Select Battlefield 6 for large military battles, Apex Legends for battle royale squads, THE FINALS for free-to-start objective competition, Rainbow Six Siege for tactical rounds, or Fortnite, Rocket League and Fall Guys for a genre change.
- Check mixed PC-console matchmaking. Apex sends a console player who parties with a PC player into PC matches; Battlefield 6 uses a console-priority approach. Other games can apply different rules.
- Confirm the entry model. Battlefield 6 and Rainbow Six Siege are paid choices; Apex Legends, THE FINALS, Fortnite, Rocket League and Fall Guys have free entry, while Destiny 2 and Warframe can involve separate content or service terms.
- Test invitations before scheduling a long session. Have one player search for another, send an invite and join a lobby. This catches account-linking and privacy-setting problems early.
- Decide how you will communicate. Use built-in voice where it is documented, or agree on a separate voice service if one player’s platform has restrictions.
Cross-play setup checklist

Common problems and practical fixes
“We can see each other, but the invite fails.”
Confirm that everyone is signed into the intended publisher account, has accepted the platform’s online-service terms and is using the same game version. Remove and re-add the friend through the game’s own account search, then restart the game after account linking.
“The console player is suddenly facing PC opponents.”
In Apex Legends, this is expected when a console player joins a party containing a PC player. Decide whether the group prefers that mixed pool; if not, form a console-only party.
“Queues became much longer after we changed a setting.”
THE FINALS warns that disabling cross-play can increase queue times. Restore the default cross-play setting if the group values faster matchmaking more than a platform-restricted pool.
“One friend cannot access the same activity.”
Cross-play does not guarantee shared access to every mode, expansion or account entitlement. Check the game’s current activity, edition and platform rules rather than assuming that a cross-play badge covers all content.
“Voice chat works for some players but not others.”
Check microphone permissions at both the operating-system and game levels, verify that no player is muted, and confirm whether the title’s voice feature covers cross-platform parties. Fortnite’s Epic Parties system has its own app and platform support boundaries even though it connects multiple Epic ecosystems.
What to pick first
For a direct Call of Duty-style replacement, start with Battlefield 6 if everyone owns a supported PC, PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S and is comfortable with a paid game. For the widest documented hardware coverage and a free entry point, start with Apex Legends, while warning console players that joining a PC friend moves the party into PC matchmaking. Choose THE FINALS for a current-generation free-to-start team shooter, and choose Fortnite, Rocket League or Fall Guys when the real problem is shooter fatigue rather than a shortage of cross-play options.
