Yes—sole proprietors can often apply for a business credit card without forming an LLC or getting an EIN. The right card depends on where your business spends, whether you can pay the balance in full, and whether its fees, rewards, and application requirements fit your situation. A business card can make expense tracking easier, but it does not create legal separation between you and your business.
Can a sole proprietor get a business credit card?
Often, yes. A sole proprietorship is an unincorporated business run by one person, with no legal distinction between the owner and the business, as Chase explains. You do not necessarily need an LLC, corporation, or EIN to apply. Capital One’s September 1, 2026 guide says sole proprietors can typically apply without a formal business entity or EIN, and that most issuers allow an applicant to use a legal name and SSN. Issuer rules differ, and meeting basic eligibility requirements does not guarantee approval.

Chase says applicants who earn profit from goods or services may qualify, including freelancers and gig workers. Some issuers may also set minimum revenue or time-in-business requirements. Check the rules for the specific card before applying.

What to put on the application
Depending on the issuer, an application may ask for your SSN or EIN, legal or business name, address and contact details, industry, annual revenue, and time in business. An issuer may request financial statements or proof of income or business ownership. If you are an unregistered sole proprietor, use your legal name and report business information as the issuer requests; TD, for example, says unregistered sole proprietors applying for its Business Solutions card should use the owner’s legal name and SSN and report prior-year annual revenue before taxes and expenses. That instruction is specific to TD’s card.

Answer accurately. Do not inflate revenue, invent a business structure, or count income in a way that conflicts with the issuer’s instructions. If you have no business revenue yet, ask the issuer how to report projected or other income rather than assuming that a particular card will accept it.
Business credit cards to compare for a sole proprietorship
There is no universal best card: a high category rate is useful only if you spend in that category, and rewards can be outweighed by fees or interest. NerdWallet’s 2026 roundup positions the cards below for different use cases; those are editorial recommendations, not guarantees that a card is best for every applicant. Terms change, so treat issuer offers as snapshots and confirm the current application terms before applying.

How to choose based on spending and cash flow
Start with your actual spending
Estimate what you spend in a typical year and sort it by category. Compare a flat-rate card with category rewards using your own numbers, including any spending cap and excluded transactions. A higher advertised percentage may return less if your purchases do not qualify or exceed the cap.

Compare the whole cost, not just the welcome offer
Check the annual fee against rewards and benefits you will realistically use. For a welcome offer, compare its value with the required spend and deadline. Count only planned business purchases you can afford; spending extra to earn a bonus can erase its value.
If you might carry a balance, focus on the APR after any introductory period and how long the introductory rate lasts. Rewards do not make a high-interest balance inexpensive. A 0% introductory offer is temporary financing, not a reason to borrow more than you can repay.

Match redemption to how you will use rewards
Cash back is straightforward if you want a statement credit or cash reward. Points and travel benefits may be more useful if you will redeem them strategically, but their practical value depends on available redemption options and your plans. Do not treat a point value or travel perk as cash unless the issuer lets you redeem it that way.

What a business card does—and does not—change
A separate card can make business transactions easier to identify on statements and simplify bookkeeping. It does not turn a sole proprietorship into a separate legal entity or shield the owner from business debts and liabilities. Chase notes that a sole proprietor remains responsible for business taxes, debts, and liabilities. A card issuer may also require a personal guarantee when the business has not established its own credit; Capital One says that can leave the owner personally responsible if the business cannot repay.
