What “built-in” and “integrated” mean in UK listings
Retailers often use built-in and integrated interchangeably, but the installation result can differ. Teka describes a fully integrated refrigerator as hidden behind the kitchen cabinetry. Other built-in products can leave the appliance door, controls or a portion of the front visible. Read the fitting description and installation diagram for the exact model rather than assuming the two terms describe the same door treatment.

Start with the cabinet niche, not the appliance brand
Measure all three dimensions
Which? says built-in models are usually designed for a 60 cm-wide kitchen cupboard unit, are usually about 55 cm deep, and span roughly 100 cm to 200 cm in height. Those are category-level indications, not a fit guarantee. Cabinet construction, adjacent walls, skirting, pipework and the appliance’s own clearances can reduce the usable opening.
- Measure the opening’s height at the left, centre and right. Record the smallest value.
- Measure width at the top, middle and bottom, again using the smallest value.
- Measure available depth from the front of the cabinet to the first obstruction, including hinges, sockets and pipes.
- Check the floor is level and note any plinth or upper trim that limits the door or ventilation gap.
- Compare every measurement with the model’s installation drawing, which will specify the required niche and clearances.
Do not rely on the external dimensions shown in a search result. The appliance drawing may require additional space for ventilation, cable routing or the furniture door. If the drawing and your measurements disagree, stop and resolve the discrepancy before ordering.
Check door clearance and nearby obstructions
Measure how far the door must open to remove drawers, shelves or freezer baskets. A wall, tall unit or handle on the adjacent cabinet can prevent the hinge from reaching its intended angle. The required clearance depends on the hinge design and the thickness and position of the cabinet door, so use the manufacturer’s diagram rather than a generic rule.

Choose the fridge-to-freezer ratio that matches your shopping
Integrated models commonly advertise 60/40, 70/30 or 80/20 fridge-to-freezer splits, according to Which? The ratio is a planning shortcut, not a guarantee of usable litres: shelves, drawers, insulation and the evaporator layout affect the space you can actually use.
When a 60/40 split makes sense
A 60/40 arrangement gives the freezer a larger share than the other common configurations. It suits households that batch-cook, buy frozen vegetables or meat, or keep several weeks of frozen food. Check that the freezer drawers open fully within the cabinet and that the lower position is practical for the people who use it.

When a 70/30 split is the safer compromise
Seventy per cent fridge and 30 per cent freezer is a middle-ground choice for mixed shopping. It leaves room for fresh ingredients, dairy and prepared meals while retaining a useful frozen section. Compare the actual usable capacities in the model sheet; two appliances with the same advertised ratio can feel very different once shelves and drawers are fitted.
When an 80/20 split is preferable
An 80/20 layout favours fresh food. It is appropriate when you shop frequently, have a separate chest freezer, or freeze only small quantities. It is a poor match for a household that stores large frozen items, because the nominal freezer percentage can hide limited drawer height.
Integrated appliances generally provide less storage than similarly sized freestanding models, Which? cautions. Treat the usable fridge and freezer figures as decision data and leave headroom for packaging, airflow and awkwardly shaped items rather than planning to fill every corner.
Verify the hinge and cabinet-door fixing system
Many built-in models support only one installation system. Bosch’s current catalogue distinguishes sliding-hinge and flat-hinge models, illustrating why the exact model number and fitting method must be checked together. A cabinet door that worked with your old appliance may not transfer to a replacement with a different hinge arrangement.
Sliding hinge
With a sliding-hinge arrangement, the furniture door and appliance door move relative to each other on a sliding connection. Confirm the permitted door weight, fixing positions and opening angle in the installation kit instructions. Do not assume that a familiar cabinet door automatically meets those limits.

Flat hinge (fixed door)
A flat-hinge or fixed-door system attaches the furniture door directly to the appliance door. Check the required drilling pattern, door thickness range and adjustment directions. Alignment is particularly important: a small error can make the door bind against the cabinet or leave an uneven gap.

Before ordering
- Write down the hinge type of the appliance being replaced, but treat it only as a clue.
- Match the new model’s stated system to the cabinet-door hardware and installation drawing.
- Confirm whether a fixing kit, spacers or replacement brackets are included or sold separately.
- Ask the installer to verify compatibility by exact model number; no universal accessory is established for every integrated appliance.
Compare usable capacity, energy and cooling performance
Usable space beats headline litres
Manufacturers can measure capacity differently from the space you can use after shelves, drawers and fittings are installed. Which? says its laboratory work measures how much usable space is actually available, which may not match the manufacturer’s claim. Use the same definition when comparing shortlisted models and note whether a figure includes removable components.
Read the energy label and model sheet
Record the energy class and the annual energy-consumption figure from the current label or product data sheet for each exact model. A class letter alone does not tell you the running cost without the consumption value and your electricity tariff. Labels and specifications can change between markets or revisions, so save the document supplied with the model you intend to buy.
Which? evaluates energy costs over time in its testing. That is useful context, but no model-level independent energy comparison is established in the evidence available for this guide. Do not convert a manufacturer’s efficiency feature into a proven cost saving.
Cooling and food-preservation features
Which? also measures how long food takes to reach a temperature cold enough to be safe to eat. Teka identifies food preservation, capacity, energy efficiency, installation type and day-to-day ease of use as relevant selection factors. Translate feature labels into a practical question: will the system cool a normal weekly shop promptly, keep temperature stable when the door is opened, and avoid maintenance you do not want?

Examples of features worth checking in the model sheet include automatic defrosting, frost-reduction or no-frost systems, dedicated freshness drawers, lighting and control placement. These are equipment descriptions, not independent proof of longer food life or lower bills. Check the operating instructions for temperature ranges, alarm behaviour and cleaning requirements.
Set a total budget, not just an appliance price
Which? places the broad UK category range at about £320 to more than £1,600 in its accessed guide. Prices are volatile and that range is not a quote for a particular model. Delivery, installation, door reversal and old-appliance recycling may be charged separately, and availability can vary by postcode.
Build the delivered-cost calculation
- Appliance price for the exact model and finish.
- Delivery to your postcode and any timed or upstairs-delivery charge.
- Installation, including cabinet preparation or door fitting where offered.
- Door reversal or hinge-side changes, if the model supports them.
- Removal and recycling of the old appliance.
- Any required fixing kit, trim, spacers or replacement furniture hardware.
- Warranty terms, call-out coverage and the availability of local service.
Ask the retailer to itemise these costs before payment. Do not assume that a displayed price includes installation or recycling, and do not assume a service is available in every postcode.

These listings demonstrate why a feature or a single dimension is not enough to select an appliance. Obtain the complete model drawing and energy documentation for the version sold in your region.

A repeatable shortlist method
- Define the food pattern. Estimate how much fresh and frozen food your household stores between shopping trips, including batch cooking and seasonal buying.
- Filter by niche. Reject any model whose official drawing does not fit the smallest measured opening and required clearances.
- Filter by door system. Match sliding or fixed-door hardware, hinge side and opening angle to the cabinet.
- Compare usable capacities. Record fridge and freezer space separately and calculate whether the split reflects your routine.
- Record energy data. Copy the label class and annual consumption for each exact model, with the label date or revision.
- Check cooling and convenience. Compare defrost method, freshness storage, controls, lighting, alarms and cleaning access against your priorities.
- Price the complete job. Add delivery, installation, door work, recycling and any hardware before deciding.
- Confirm support. Check warranty length, service coverage and spare-parts or hinge-kit compatibility for your postcode and model.
Installation: what should happen on the day
- Keep the appliance upright for the period specified in its installation instructions and inspect it for transit damage before fitting.
- Confirm the cabinet is level, secure and provides the ventilation path shown in the drawing.
- Position the appliance without trapping the power cable or blocking required air gaps.
- Fit the specified hinge or sliding hardware and attach the furniture door using the model’s template and screw positions.
- Adjust the door so gaps are even and it opens without striking adjacent units.
- Check that drawers, shelves and freezer baskets can be removed with the door at its normal opening angle.
- Set the controls according to the manual, allow the appliance to reach its operating temperature, and only then load food.
- Keep the installation paperwork, energy label and model number for future service or replacement-part enquiries.
If the cabinet needs cutting, the door is unusually heavy, or the drawing conflicts with the existing furniture, use an installer experienced with integrated appliances. For a replacement, confirm the exact fixing system before removing the old door hardware.
Common buying and fitting mistakes
Choosing by external height alone
A nominal 178 cm appliance may require a different niche height once ventilation and hinge clearances are included. Always compare the cabinet opening with the complete drawing.
Assuming every 60 cm cabinet is identical
The 60 cm figure describes a common cabinet width, not a universal tolerance. Out-of-square units, thick side panels and obstructions can make a nominally suitable model impossible to fit.
Ignoring the furniture-door system
A replacement with the wrong hinge type can leave the door misaligned or unable to open far enough. Match the model number, hinge system and fixing instructions before purchase.
Using advertised capacity as usable capacity
Shelves and drawers consume space, and integrated designs often store less than freestanding equivalents. Compare the usable figures supplied for each model and consider the shape of the items you actually store.
Treating a feature label as a performance test
Terms such as “freshness” or “no frost” describe equipment. They do not establish a particular cooling speed, energy saving or food-life result without comparable testing.
Budgeting only for the appliance
Installation, delivery, door work and recycling can change the final cost. Obtain an itemised quote and confirm postcode coverage before committing.
Decision checklist before you order
- Smallest measured niche height, width and depth recorded.
- Ventilation, plinth, cable route and door-clearance requirements checked against the drawing.
- Fridge/freezer ratio chosen from your actual shopping and storage pattern.
- Usable capacities compared, not just headline litres.
- Hinge type, hinge side and cabinet-door fixing confirmed by exact model.
- Energy label and annual consumption saved for the exact regional version.
- Cooling, defrost, freshness, lighting and control features judged against daily use.
- Appliance, delivery, installation, hardware and recycling costs added together.
- Warranty, local service and spare-part compatibility verified.
- Retailer stock and terms checked again immediately before payment.
Following this sequence turns “best built-in fridge freezer” into a measurable fit-and-use decision. Select the model that satisfies every physical requirement first, then use capacity, energy data, cooling functions and total cost to separate the remaining candidates.
