For a self-managed VPS in India, compare the transfer quota in the exact region—not just the monthly headline price. At an illustrative 4.5 Mbps continuous stream, StreamNeo estimates roughly 1.4 TB of outbound transfer per month. DigitalOcean’s listed $12/month Basic Droplet includes 2,000 GiB, while its $4/month option includes 500 GiB and is too small for that example. Amazon Lightsail lists a $7/month, 2 TB bundle generally, but Mumbai receives half the listed transfer allowance, so it would not cover the example there. These are provider-listed figures, not tested streaming recommendations; verify current regional terms and total cost before choosing.
Which budget VPS is the practical starting point?
If you are comfortable maintaining a Linux server, DigitalOcean’s listed $12/month Basic Droplet is the more plausible starting point of the two examples for a 4.5 Mbps, always-on stream: the 2026 listing includes 2,000 GiB of transfer. The $4/month plan includes 500 GiB, which falls short. Lightsail’s general $7/month bundle lists 2 TB, but AWS says Mumbai and certain other regions receive half the listed transfer allowance, making it insufficient for the example in Mumbai. This is conditional guidance based on published quotas, not a reliability endorsement or an uptime guarantee.

| Provider and plan | Published monthly price and resources | Transfer fit for the 4.5 Mbps example |
|---|---|---|
| DigitalOcean Basic Droplet | $4/month in 2026; 512 MiB memory, 1 vCPU, 500 GiB transfer, 10 GiB SSD. DigitalOcean pricing. | Not enough for the roughly 1.4 TB/month illustrative estimate. |
| DigitalOcean Basic Droplet | $12/month in 2026; 2 GiB memory, 1 vCPU, 2,000 GiB transfer, 50 GiB SSD. DigitalOcean pricing. | Plausible listed quota fit, subject to actual usage, region, tax, and plan terms. |
| Amazon Lightsail Linux/Unix bundle | $7/month in 2026; 1 GB memory, 2 vCPUs, 40 GB SSD, 2 TB transfer in the general table. Lightsail pricing. | Not enough in Mumbai if the allowance is half the general listing; check the exact region. |
StreamNeo’s roughly 1.4 TB/month figure is its illustrative calculation for a 4.5 Mbps stream, not an independent measurement. The actual total depends on bitrate and how continuously the stream runs. DigitalOcean states that additional outbound transfer is billed at $0.01 per GiB; confirm how the provider counts usage and whether the stated rate and allowance apply to your account and region in DigitalOcean’s pricing documentation.
Calculate the transfer quota before renting
A VPS sends one continuous stream to YouTube, but that upload still consumes the server’s outbound transfer allowance. Viewers watching the YouTube broadcast do not change the VPS-to-YouTube bitrate, though the continuous push can add up over a month. Size the plan from the actual encoded output, runtime, and provider’s quota rules.
- Estimate monthly transfer from your bitrate and the hours streamed. A higher bitrate or uninterrupted operation requires more allowance.
- Check whether the quota is measured in GB or GiB and whether the provider uses a monthly pool, region-specific limits, or separate overage billing.
- Include tax and possible overage costs in the total. Do not treat an advertised bundle as suitable until you have checked the chosen region.
- Check that the disk can hold the source media, operating system, logs, and any temporary files. The listed DigitalOcean plans provide 10 GiB and 50 GiB SSD respectively; the general Lightsail bundle lists 40 GB SSD.
For an initial estimate, StreamNeo’s comparison article gives the 4.5 Mbps example at about 1.4 TB monthly. Treat it as an illustration rather than a guaranteed usage figure; calculate against the bitrate you actually plan to send.
Choose a stream format YouTube accepts
YouTube’s official live encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. For H.264, its recommended bitrate guidance includes 4 Mbps for 240p–720p at 30 fps, 6 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps, and 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. Those are recommendations for the stated format and frame rates, not a requirement to stream sleep artwork at the highest resolution. Choose settings appropriate to the source and visual quality you need.
Rank #2
- Use a two-second keyframe interval where possible; YouTube recommends two seconds and says the interval should not exceed four seconds.
- Use CBR rather than a variable target bitrate for the encoder output.
- Prefer RTMPS, YouTube’s recommended secure extension of RTMP. YouTube says, “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.”
- Test the output and monitor YouTube’s stream health rather than assuming that a running FFmpeg process means a healthy broadcast.
For a compatible, already encoded loop, sending the file without live re-encoding should generally require less compute than encoding video continuously. That is an engineering expectation, not a benchmark: actual CPU demand depends on the media, FFmpeg command, and output settings. Verify the exact workflow on the plan you intend to use before relying on a small instance.

A VPS gives you control, but you are responsible for the streaming process and the server around it. A typical self-managed workflow is:
Rank #3
- Confirm the media and output settings. Check that the source file is compatible with the planned FFmpeg workflow. Decide on codec, audio format, bitrate, frame rate, resolution, and keyframe interval before selecting a small server.
- Provision a Linux VPS in the region you intend to use. Check the current price, outbound allowance, storage, and any regional quota difference for that exact location.
- Place or fetch the source media and install FFmpeg. Make sure the file is available after a reboot and that disk space is sufficient for the media and operational files.
- Create a YouTube live stream and configure the encoder destination. Use RTMPS where available. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it in scripts, logs, screenshots, or public repositories. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio.
- Run the loop under a service manager. Configure the process to restart if it exits, and arrange log rotation so logs do not fill the disk.
- Add monitoring and a recovery path. A process supervisor can restart a failed local process, but it does not by itself prove YouTube is receiving a healthy stream. Monitor the broadcast and configure a watchdog or alert appropriate to your setup.
- Test the whole system, including reboot recovery. Confirm the stream starts, plays as intended, survives a process failure, and returns after a server reboot. Check YouTube stream health during the test.
These are operational tasks, not a pre-tested setup recipe for a particular provider. A VPS provider’s general availability figures, if published, would not establish that a specific YouTube broadcast will never disconnect.
Check channel eligibility, rights, and monetization separately
A working VPS and an accepted live encoder do not establish that a channel is eligible to livestream or that a sleep-sounds broadcast can be monetized. They also do not grant rights to the audio, artwork, or video. Check YouTube’s current channel requirements and policies, and make sure you have permission for every audio and visual element used. The material available here does not establish a specific eligibility outcome, licensing status, or monetization result for a sleep-sounds channel.

Or let it run in the cloud
If your priority is a looping YouTube stream without administering a Linux server, StreamNeo is the managed alternative to consider first: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from its cloud; it does not stream from a camera or to platforms other than YouTube.
