Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe HP Envy Pro 6420 is the clearest budget pick for an all-in-one that can also print glossy photos. If you print photos regularly, compare it with refillable-ink tank models such as the Canon PIXMA G620/G650 and Epson EcoTank ET-8500: their higher initial cost may be a better fit for frequent use. The Canon SELPHY CP1500 serves a different need—compact prints on the go—and is no longer sold directly by Canon U.S., so consider it only if a legitimate retailer has stock.
This U.S.-leaning shortlist draws on third-party reviews and manufacturer specifications, not hands-on testing by Freedom251. Prices and availability change; check current listings and confirm the regional model suffix before buying.

How these five printers differ
| Printer | Best suited to | Ink and format | Key trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| HP Envy Pro 6420 | Lower-cost home printing with scanning and copying | Four-ink cartridge system; A4 class | Cartridge replacement costs merit checking if you print often |
| Canon PIXMA G620/G650 | Frequent photo printing | Six dye-based inks in a refillable tank system | Higher initial outlay; model name varies by region |
| Epson EcoTank ET-8500 | Photos and everyday home documents | Six-ink tank system; Letter/A4 class | Higher upfront cost than a basic cartridge printer |
| Epson Expression Photo XP-970 | Home photo features without a tank system | Six-color Claria cartridge system | Check replacement ink costs before treating it as a budget choice |
| Canon SELPHY CP1500 | Compact prints from a phone or memory card | Dye-sublimation; 4×6-inch, square, and mini-sticker formats | Small-format specialist; U.S. direct availability has ended |
These are different kinds of “budget.” A low purchase price can suit occasional prints, while a refillable tank may be worth considering when you expect to print regularly. A compact printer for snapshots is not a substitute for a general-purpose home printer.

Its combination of general-purpose functions and photo capability makes it the most straightforward choice here for a household that wants one device for documents and occasional pictures.

No current price is established here, so treat “budget” as the review’s positioning rather than a promise of a particular street price. If photos will make up a large share of your printing, compare the cost of replacement cartridges with a tank model before deciding.
Best for frequent photos: Canon PIXMA G620/G650
TechRadar’s overall photo-printer pick is the G620/G650, a six-ink tank model. Digital Camera World describes the G650 as a multifunction MegaTank printer that uses six dye-based inks for photos and bottled ink. That refillable setup makes it a sensible candidate to compare when you print often, although it asks for a larger initial investment than a low-cost cartridge printer.

Best mixed-use tank option: Epson EcoTank ET-8500
Digital Camera World describes the ET-8500 as a multipurpose Letter/A4 photo printer with six tanks. It lists USB, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and SD connectivity, making it a flexible fit for a home that prints both photos and documents. Epson says bottled ink can help keep running costs low, but actual costs depend on printing tasks, volume, and conditions.

Epson’s published cost comparisons use replacement-bottle and cartridge MSRP and yield assumptions as of May 2026; the company says actual savings vary considerably. Use those figures as a comparison framework, not a guaranteed saving for your household. Epson’s U.S. EcoTank Photo family page states a one-year limited warranty, but check the terms for the specific model and market.
Best cartridge-based photo alternative: Epson Expression Photo XP-970
TechRadar lists the XP-970 for home photo printing and highlights its compact design, features, and six-color Claria ink system. It is worth comparing if you want a photo-focused cartridge printer and do not need refillable tanks. Its purchase price alone does not establish that it will be economical over time: check the price and yield of replacement ink for the exact model in your region.

Best compact option: Canon SELPHY CP1500
The CP1500 uses dye-sublimation printing for 4×6-inch photos, 2.1×2.1-inch square prints, and mini stickers. Canon lists AirPrint, its app, USB, and memory-card printing. These smaller formats and phone-friendly workflow make it a different category from a desk printer intended for documents or larger photos.
Canon U.S.A. says the model is no longer available directly from Canon. Buy only if a legitimate retailer has current stock, and verify that the listing is for the correct regional version. Canon describes prints as water-resistant and claims “up to 100 years” of print longevity; that is a manufacturer claim, not an independently established result here. Canon also claims up to 54 prints per charge with the optional NB-CP2LH battery, so do not treat that figure as a guarantee for every use.
Best Value

What to check before choosing
- Print size: Decide whether you mainly need standard 4×6-inch snapshots, Letter/A4 output, or larger prints. Larger-format capability can push a printer beyond a tight budget.
- Print volume and ink: Compare cartridge replacement costs with tank-bottle costs using your likely volume. Neither system is automatically cheaper for every household.
- Photo workflow: Consider the detail, color, contrast, speed, and wireless or app workflow that matter to you. TechRadar says its review method considers these areas as well as ownership cost, but the shortlist is not a set of independent tests by this publication.
- Other household jobs: A multifunction printer can scan and copy documents; a compact or photo-first model may be less versatile for general home use.
- Local model and stock: Check regional suffixes, current retailer availability, and compatible supplies before ordering, especially for the Canon variants and the CP1500.
Which budget photo printer should you choose?
Choose the HP Envy Pro 6420 if you want an affordable-positioned all-in-one for home use and occasional glossy photos. Compare the Canon PIXMA G620/G650 or Epson EcoTank ET-8500 if you expect to print photos regularly and can accommodate a higher upfront cost. The XP-970 is the cartridge-based photo-feature alternative, while the CP1500 is only for compact formats and depends on current retailer stock.
