Best overall low-cost over-ear pick: the Anker Soundcore Life Q20 2024. RTINGS names it both its best cheap Bluetooth headphone and its best cheap noise-cancelling headphone, with a tested 49-hour battery, light comfort and useful reduction of speech-range background noise. Choose the JBL Tune 720BT instead if long claimed battery life, multipoint and a detachable cable matter more than active noise cancellation. For frequent calls, the JBL Tune 760NC is the budget-oriented alternative, while the Sony WH-CH520 is worth considering only if you actually want on-ear cups rather than over-ear isolation.
Prices and stock move by country and retailer. The only dated price in the available product evidence is JBL’s US direct-page price of $89.95 for the Tune 720BT, observed October 13, 2026; it is not a guaranteed current or Amazon price.

Start with the fit: over-ear is not on-ear
Over-ear headphones use cushions large enough to surround each ear. The pads contact your head around the ear, which can improve passive isolation and avoid pressure directly on the outer ear. On-ear headphones sit on the ear itself and are generally lighter and more ventilated, but they let in more outside sound and can become uncomfortable if the clamping force presses on your pinna.

RTINGS classifies it as a budget on-ear model. It is a reasonable choice for someone who prefers airflow, low weight and portability, but it cannot meet a requirement for cups that enclose the ears. Confirm the category in the retailer’s specification rather than relying on a product photo; angled images often make on-ear cups look larger than they are.

Anker Soundcore Life Q20 2024: best low-cost ANC starting point
RTINGS’ 2026 budget wireless and noise-cancelling guides place the Life Q20 2024 at the top of their cheap Bluetooth and cheap ANC categories. It is a closed-back, over-ear wireless headphone with active noise cancellation and a microphone, making it the most straightforward recommendation when you want one inexpensive pair for commuting, work and everyday listening.
What its testing says
- RTINGS measured 49 hours of battery life.
- The lightweight design was judged comfortable for extended wear.
- Its noise isolation handled background chatter comparatively well but reduced low engine rumble less effectively.
- The sound is described as V-shaped: boosted bass and treble with relatively recessed mids.
- Build quality is flimsier than some more expensive comparisons.
- The included case is soft fabric rather than a rigid hard case.
That ANC pattern matters. In an office, café or shared room, reducing voices can make speech and music easier to follow. On a bus, train or aircraft, the lowest-frequency mechanical drone is harder for this model to suppress, so do not interpret “noise cancelling” as silence. A good seal from the ear pads still contributes passive isolation, and fit can change results more than a specification label suggests.
Who should buy it
Choose the Q20 2024 when ANC is a priority and you want to spend as little as practical. It is also the safer general-purpose pick if you do not need a wired fallback or a very rugged case. Consider another model if you routinely pack headphones without protection, need a neutral midrange for voices or acoustic music, or expect excellent low-frequency suppression from an entry-level ANC system.

The Tune 720BT is JBL’s wireless over-ear option for buyers who value endurance and connection flexibility more than ANC. JBL lists Bluetooth 5.3, multipoint connection, a detachable audio cable, app-based EQ and up to 76 hours of playback. JBL also states that a five-minute charge can provide three hours of playback.
Understanding the 76-hour figure
Seventy-six hours is a manufacturer-stated maximum. It is not an independent test result or a guaranteed daily runtime. Actual hours vary with volume, wireless conditions, equalizer settings, call use and battery age. Treat the number as an indication that the 720BT is designed for unusually long intervals between charges, not as a promise that every user will reach it.
Rank #2
- Block the World, Keep the Music: Four built-in mics work together to filter out background noise — whether you're in a packed office, on a crowded commute, or moving through a busy street — so every beat comes through clean and clear. (Not available in AUX-in mode.)
- Two Ways to Hear More: BassUp technology delivers deep, punchy bass and crisp highs in wireless mode — then step it up further by plugging in the included AUX cable to unlock Hi‑Res certified audio for studio-level clarity.
- 40 Hours. 5-Minute Top-Up: With ANC on, a single charge keeps you listening through days of commutes and long-haul flights. Running low? Just 5 minutes plugged in gives you 4 more hours — so you're never stuck waiting.
- Two Devices, Zero Hassle: Stay connected to your laptop and phone at the same time. Audio switches automatically to whichever device needs you — so a call never interrupts your flow, and getting back to your playlist is just as easy. Designed for commuters and remote workers who move smoothly between work and personal listening throughout the day.
- Your Sound, Your Rules: The soundcore app puts everything at your fingertips — dials your ideal EQ with presets or build your own, flip between ANC, Normal, and Transparency modes on the fly, or wind down with built-in white noise. One app, total control.
Why multipoint and the cable matter
Multipoint lets the headphones maintain connections with two devices, such as a phone and laptop, so you can switch between music and a work call without repeatedly opening Bluetooth settings. The detachable audio cable provides a wired fallback for an airplane entertainment system, a device with a depleted battery or a computer where wireless latency is inconvenient. The cited JBL specifications do not establish whether wired playback continues after the battery is empty, so check the manual for that specific situation.
Price and availability
JBL’s US direct product page displayed $89.95 when accessed October 13, 2026. That figure is tied to the US market and that date; it is not a current worldwide price, an Amazon price or a permanent list price. Compare the local retailer total, return policy and stock before buying.

JBL Tune 760NC: the call-oriented alternative
RTINGS identifies the Tune 760NC as its best budget wireless headphone for calls. Its microphone can separate your voice from moderate background noise, but louder environments may overwhelm it. The ANC is more effective against mid- and treble-range sounds than against low engine rumble, so it shares the Q20 2024’s basic limitation at the bottom of the frequency range.
Sound and controls
RTINGS characterizes the tuning as bass-heavy. There is no companion-app EQ, which means you cannot use a supported phone app to reshape the response when the default bass emphasis does not suit speech, classical music or podcasts. Pricing is variable, with occasional discounts, so this model can make sense when a local sale places it below other ANC options.
Choose it for calls, not maximum isolation
The 760NC is the most targeted choice here if clear conversations in moderately noisy places are your main reason for buying. For construction noise, aircraft engines or other loud low-frequency sources, neither its ANC nor the Q20 2024 should be treated as a guarantee of quiet. Test the microphone with the calling apps you actually use before depending on it for a critical work environment.

Sony WH-CH520: useful only when on-ear is acceptable
The WH-CH520 appears in budget recommendations, but RTINGS classifies it as on-ear and notes that it has no ANC. Its strengths are low weight, portability, multipoint and sound customization through an app. RTINGS measured 52 hours of continuous battery life.
It can suit listeners who dislike warm, enclosed ear cups or who want a compact headset for walks and occasional travel. It is the wrong answer when your specification says “over-ear,” when passive isolation is important or when you need active cancellation. Treat it as a fit contrast, not as a competing over-ear winner.
Sony WH-CH720N: when the entry-level budget is too limiting
What Hi-Fi?’s 2026 over-ear guide positions the WH-CH720N as a more capable-feeling, ANC-equipped over-ear step above the true entry-level WH-CH520. It belongs in a comparison when you can increase the budget and want a more substantial ANC experience, but the exact price depends on country and retailer. Do not assume it is still “low cost” in every market; check the local street price before treating it as an alternative.
How to compare cheap over-ear headphones without being misled
1. Separate passive isolation from ANC
Closed-back cups and a good pad seal block some sound without electronics. ANC uses microphones and signal processing to counter external noise. Low-cost ANC generally performs unevenly: it can reduce steady or midrange sounds while leaving speech, sudden sounds or deep mechanical rumble partly audible. Ask what type of noise you need to reduce instead of looking for a single “noise blocked” claim.
2. Treat sound tuning and EQ as separate decisions
A V-shaped or bass-heavy signature can make modern music energetic, but it may push voices behind the music. App EQ is valuable when you want to reduce bass, lift mids or create a listening profile. The Q20 2024’s V-shaped tuning and the 760NC’s bass emphasis are reviewer descriptions; the 720BT and WH-CH520 are documented as offering app sound customization, while the 760NC is specifically noted as lacking companion-app EQ.

- Hybrid Active Noise Cancelling: 2 internal and 2 external mics work in tandem to detect external noise and effectively reduce up to 90% of it, no matter in trains or offices.
- Immerse Yourself in Detailed Audio: The noise cancelling headphones have oversized 40mm dynamic drivers that produce detailed sound and thumping beats with BassUp technology for your every travel, commuting and gaming. Compatible with Hi-Res certified audio via the AUX cable for more detail.
- 40-Hour Long Battery Life and Fast Charging: With 40 hours of battery life with ANC on and 60 hours in normal mode, you can commute in peace with your Bluetooth headphones without thinking about recharging. Fast charge for 5 mins to get an extra 4 hours of music listening for daily users.
- Dual-Connections: Connect to two devices simultaneously with Bluetooth 5.0 and instantly switch between them. Whether you're working on your laptop, or need to take a phone call, audio from your Bluetooth headphones will automatically play from the device you need to hear from.
- App for EQ Customization: Download the soundcore app to tailor your sound using the customizable EQ, with 22 presets, or adjust it yourself. You can also switch between 3 modes: ANC, Normal, and Transparency, and relax with white noise.
3. Read battery numbers with their qualification
Independent test results and manufacturer maxima are not interchangeable. RTINGS reports 49 hours for the Q20 2024 and 52 hours for the WH-CH520 under its test conditions. JBL’s 76 hours for the 720BT is a maximum claim, accompanied by the five-minute/three-hour quick-charge statement. No cited battery figure guarantees the same runtime at your volume or with calls and ANC enabled.
4. Check call performance separately from music quality
A headphone can sound good while its microphone performs poorly outdoors. The 760NC is the call-focused option in this shortlist, but RTINGS still reports difficulty in louder environments. The Q20 2024 includes a microphone, yet the cited evidence does not establish a call ranking for it. If calls are central, test recordings and calls in the exact room, street or office where you will use the headset.
5. Inspect durability and what travels with you
The Q20 2024’s soft case offers less crush protection than a hard shell, and RTINGS describes its construction as flimsier than higher-priced comparisons. A detachable cable, as on the 720BT, can extend usefulness when wireless charging is unavailable. Hinge movement, pad replacement availability and the retailer’s return window are practical checks not captured by a battery or codec specification.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Buying checklist for a low-cost over-ear pair
- Confirm the cup category. Look for “over-ear” or “circumaural” in the specification. Reject listings that say on-ear if surrounding your ears is essential.
- Define your dominant noise. Voices in a shared room point toward the Q20 2024’s tested strength; constant low rumble requires realistic expectations or a higher budget.
- Choose wireless features. Select multipoint if you regularly alternate between phone and computer. Select a detachable cable if wired listening is part of your routine.
- Set a realistic battery target. Use independent test figures as comparisons and manufacturer “up to” figures as ceilings, not guarantees.
- Decide whether EQ is necessary. App customization can correct a bass-heavy or V-shaped preference; the 760NC’s lack of companion-app EQ limits that option.
- Plan for calls. If you work in loud places, prioritize a model with evidence for voice separation and verify it with a real call.
- Check the physical package. Confirm whether a cable and case are included and whether the case is soft or hard if you travel frequently.
- Verify local price and returns. Prices, promotions and inventory change. The dated $89.95 Tune 720BT figure is specific to JBL’s US page on October 13, 2026, not a universal benchmark.
Setup steps that improve results
- Charge fully before judging endurance. Record your listening volume and whether ANC is enabled; those conditions make your own runtime comparable over time.
- Adjust the headband and rotate the cups. Center each cushion around the ear without gaps. A poor seal can make ANC and bass appear weaker than they are.
- Pair the primary device first. Then enable multipoint only if you need simultaneous phone-and-computer connections; extra active links can complicate troubleshooting.
- Run the app update and EQ options. For models that support an app, save a profile for speech or podcasts and another for music rather than changing settings blindly.
- Test ANC with representative sounds. Try voices, traffic or a fan separately. This reveals whether the headphones match your environment better than a generic “ANC on” impression.
- Make a short call recording. Repeat it in a quiet room and in your normal noisy location. Listen for voice level, background pumping and interruptions before relying on the microphone.
- Pack according to the case supplied. A soft fabric case protects against scratches but not the crushing forces a rigid case is designed to resist.
Which one should you buy?
Buy the Anker Soundcore Life Q20 2024 when the central requirement is inexpensive over-ear wireless ANC, especially for speech-range background noise, and you can accept a lighter build and soft case. Buy the JBL Tune 720BT when long manufacturer-rated battery life, multipoint and a detachable cable are more valuable than ANC. Pick the JBL Tune 760NC when budget call performance is the deciding factor and you can tolerate weaker results in loud environments and no app EQ. Choose the Sony WH-CH520 only when you prefer an on-ear fit. Move up to the Sony WH-CH720N if your definition of low cost allows a step-up ANC model and local pricing makes the upgrade reasonable.
