Best Budget HDMI 2.1 Monitors for PS5 and Xbox: 4K/120Hz Picks

Best strict-console pick: the ASUS TUF Gaming VG28UQL1A. The comparison identifies it as a 28-inch 4K Fast IPS monitor with two HDMI 2.1 ports, up to 144Hz, and ASUS’s claim of 4K/120Hz at 4:4:4 on both PS5 and Xbox Series X. Its reported U.S. ASUS-store price was $449 when checked, so treat that figure as a dated snapshot rather than a live offer.

Do not buy a monitor merely because its box says “HDMI 2.1.” Some HDMI 2.1 implementations use TMDS bandwidth equivalent to HDMI 2.0 and may not provide the FRL link required for full 4K/120Hz. Check the exact model’s bandwidth, FRL, chroma mode, VRR and console documentation before paying.

What makes a budget HDMI 2.1 monitor worth buying?

A useful HDMI 2.1 gaming monitor is a combination of the right input implementation, panel and console behavior—not a badge on the specification sheet. For PS5 or Xbox Series X, the target is usually 3840×2160 at 120Hz with variable refresh and a clean 4:4:4 signal. A display can have an HDMI 2.1-labelled socket yet fall short in one or more of those areas.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use this order when evaluating a listing:

  1. Confirm the console mode. Look for an explicit PS5/Xbox 4K/120Hz statement and whether it is 4:4:4 or 4:2:0.
  2. Check the link type and bandwidth. Full-rate HDMI 2.1 normally uses FRL (Fixed Rate Link). A TMDS implementation may have bandwidth equivalent to HDMI 2.0.
  3. Verify VRR and ALLM. These are separate compatibility features; their presence is not guaranteed by the HDMI version number.
  4. Then compare the monitor itself. Resolution, refresh ceiling, size, panel type, HDR behavior, ports, warranty and local price determine whether the display is a good buy.

This approach prevents a common mistake: paying a premium for “HDMI 2.1” and discovering that the console is limited to a lower refresh rate, reduced chroma or a narrow VRR range.

Our strict-console pick: ASUS TUF Gaming VG28UQL1A

The VG28UQL1A is the clearest fit when your priority is a PS5 or Xbox Series X delivering 4K at 120Hz without sacrificing chroma. The comparison describes a 28-inch 4K Fast IPS panel, up to 144Hz and two HDMI 2.1 inputs. ASUS states that the monitor supports 4K/120Hz at 4:4:4 on both current-generation consoles, which is the strongest console-specific claim among the listed candidates.

That 4:4:4 detail matters for menus, text and fine interface elements. A 4:2:0 signal reduces color-resolution information; many games still look good, but small colored text and high-contrast edges can appear less clean. If you use the monitor for a PC, the 144Hz ceiling also gives headroom above the 120Hz console limit.

Who should choose it

  • PS5 owners who want a documented 4K/120Hz 4:4:4 mode.
  • Xbox Series X owners who want the same target without relying on an unverified chroma setting.
  • Players who prefer a 27-to-28-inch 4K size for a desk rather than a television-sized panel.

What to verify before ordering

The model is not new, and the comparison’s $449 figure was the U.S. ASUS-store price observed at that time, not a guaranteed current price. Check the exact regional SKU, warranty terms, dead-pixel policy, return window and whether the seller is shipping the same VG28UQL1A revision. If a newer display costs less locally, compare its documented FRL and console mode rather than assuming the older ASUS is automatically the better bargain.

Best feature-rich alternative: Gigabyte M28U

The M28U is attractive when your monitor must serve a gaming PC, a console and USB peripherals. It has two HDMI 2.1 inputs, USB-C, a KVM switch and a USB hub, so one keyboard and mouse can be shared between systems. That connectivity can eliminate a separate switch or hub in a compact desk setup.

The trade-off is the console signal. The comparison reports 4K/120Hz at 4:2:0 for console use. That can still produce a sharp gaming image, but it is not the same as the ASUS’s stated 4:4:4 mode. Decide whether the M28U’s workflow benefits outweigh the reduced chroma. If you regularly read console text, browse menus or use the display as a desktop monitor, full-chroma output is more valuable than it is in a sofa-distance gaming setup.

Best use case

Choose the M28U when USB-C video, KVM and the integrated hub will replace equipment you would otherwise buy. Confirm the console’s information screen after setup; the monitor’s on-screen display and the console’s video-output page should agree on 3840×2160 and 120Hz, with the expected chroma mode.

The slim profile and refined design bring a modern touch that complements any workspace or gaming station

Compact option that needs a documentation check: LG 27GR93U-B

The LG 27GR93U-B brings two HDMI 2.1 ports to a compact 27-inch IPS design. That size suits a shallow desk and keeps 4K pixel density high. However, the reviewed material did not establish its exact HDMI bandwidth or chroma mode. “Two HDMI 2.1 ports” alone is not enough evidence for a strict 4K/120Hz console recommendation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before buying, find the manufacturer’s technical specifications or manual for your region and confirm:

  • Whether the inputs use FRL rather than only TMDS signaling.
  • The maximum 3840×2160 refresh rate over HDMI.
  • Whether 4:4:4 is available at 120Hz, or if the console mode is limited to 4:2:0.
  • VRR range and whether ALLM is supported.

If those details are clear and match your console, the 27-inch format can be a sensible space-saving choice. If the documentation remains ambiguous, select a model with an explicit console mode instead.

Specification-led candidates for PC and console buyers

MSI MAG 274URFW

MSI lists this model as a 27-inch Rapid IPS display with 3840×2160 resolution and a 160Hz refresh rate. Its HDMI 2.1 specification is listed at up to 48Gbps with VRR, and the manufacturer advertises 4K at 160Hz. Those figures make it interesting for a high-frame-rate PC and a 120Hz console on the same desk.

They do not establish a current bargain. The available material did not verify its local price, stock, warranty or whether a sale undercuts older models. Treat the 48Gbps figure as a manufacturer specification for this model, not as a guarantee that every HDMI 2.1 monitor offers the same bandwidth.

Philips 329M1RV/89

The Philips product sheet issued January 8, 2025 specifies a 31.5-inch IPS panel, 4K operation up to 144Hz over HDMI and DisplayPort, HDMI 2.1 VRR and FRL, and three HDMI 2.1 inputs. Three high-speed inputs are useful if you keep a PS5, Xbox and PC connected simultaneously.

  • Comes with 3W speakers and audio jack, and supports 75×75mm VESA mount. We offer 30-day return, 1-year warranty and lifelong technical support.

The 31.5-inch footprint is the main practical question. Measure desk depth and viewing distance before choosing it over a 27-to-28-inch screen. The product sheet establishes technical features, but current price and regional availability were not verified, so check those locally.

MSI MAG 322URDF E16

This 31.5-inch model is listed with a 4K 160Hz normal mode. MSI specifies HDMI 2.1 up to 48Gbps, VRR and ALLM, and describes console gaming up to 120Hz. ALLM can let a console switch the display into a lower-latency game mode automatically, while VRR matches refresh timing to frame output.

Because price and availability were not verified, use it as a specification comparison rather than a proven budget recommendation. A large 4K panel can also expose the limits of a midrange graphics card at 160Hz; for PC use, check whether your games can feed the refresh rate you are paying for.

HDMI 2.1 bandwidth: FRL versus TMDS

HDMI 2.1 is an interface specification with multiple implementation details. ASUS’s FAQ warns: “For a full 4K@120Hz experience, please check if the specific model features HDMI 2.1 with FRL (Fixed Rate Link) support.” The same explanation notes that HDMI 2.1 using TMDS can provide bandwidth equivalent to the previous HDMI 2.0 standard and may still support selected features such as VRR or ALLM at compatible resolutions.

FRL is the key term for uncompressed high-throughput modes. A listing that states only “HDMI 2.1” leaves unanswered questions about link rate, color format and refresh limits. Look for a bandwidth figure, FRL wording or an explicit console mode in the manual. The manufacturer’s 48Gbps figures for the MSI models are examples of model-specific specifications; they are not a market-wide performance statistic.

What the bandwidth changes in practice

  • Resolution and refresh: 4K at 120Hz needs substantially more link capacity than 4K at 60Hz.
  • Chroma: 4:4:4 preserves full color detail; 4:2:0 reduces chroma resolution to fit within a lower data rate.
  • Color depth: 10-bit HDR modes can require more bandwidth than 8-bit SDR.
  • Compression: some displays or GPUs may use display-stream compression in PC modes; do not assume a console supports the same path.

Use the monitor’s information panel and the console’s video-output details after installation. A cable rated for the required speed can carry a signal, but it cannot add FRL, VRR or 4:4:4 capability that the monitor lacks.

VRR, ALLM and console compatibility

Variable refresh rate (VRR) reduces tearing by allowing the display to adjust its refresh timing to the console’s frame output. Auto low-latency mode (ALLM) can switch to a gaming picture mode when the console signals that a game is running. Neither feature should be inferred solely from an HDMI 2.1 label.

Check the manufacturer’s specification for the supported VRR range and whether it applies over HDMI, not only DisplayPort. On PS5 or Xbox Series X, enable the console’s 120Hz and VRR options, then verify that the monitor reports the expected mode. If VRR is unavailable, test another HDMI input and review the monitor’s gaming or compatibility menu before changing picture settings.

HDR: useful, but do not overpay for the badge

Entry-level HDR can expand signal compatibility without delivering dramatic highlights or deep blacks. The comparison characterizes DisplayHDR 400 as an entry-level tier, not evidence of OLED-like contrast or high-impact HDR. A monitor with modest peak brightness and ordinary edge lighting may accept an HDR signal while looking only slightly different from SDR.

Prioritize 4K/120Hz, VRR and correct chroma before treating HDR certification as a deciding factor. If two otherwise equivalent models differ in HDR, inspect the stated brightness, local-dimming behavior and panel contrast rather than assuming the higher label guarantees a better picture.

How to choose the right size and panel

27 to 28 inches

At 4K, 27-to-28-inch screens provide high pixel density and fit most desks. They are the natural size for the ASUS, Gigabyte and LG candidates. You may need operating-system scaling for comfortable desktop text, but game imagery is detailed at typical desk distances.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

31.5 inches

The Philips and MSI 31.5-inch options make games feel larger and are easier to read from farther away. They need more desk depth and may reveal uneven viewing distance if you sit very close. Measure the stand footprint as well as the panel diagonal.

IPS versus other panel types

The listed candidates use IPS variants. IPS generally provides wide viewing angles and consistent color across a desk. Fast IPS and Rapid IPS are manufacturer terms for tuned response behavior; compare independent response measurements only when they are available for the exact model. Do not assume the label alone eliminates motion blur or inverse ghosting.

Ports and desk setup decisions

Count the devices you will connect before choosing. Two HDMI 2.1 inputs cover a console and a second source; three inputs, as on the Philips model’s specification, can avoid swapping cables. USB-C on the M28U can carry video and USB data for a compatible laptop, while KVM and a USB hub simplify switching one keyboard and mouse between systems.

Check whether USB-C supports the power-delivery wattage you need; a USB-C video input is not automatically a laptop charger. Also verify whether the monitor’s high refresh rate is available on every input or only DisplayPort. A monitor may advertise 160Hz overall while a particular HDMI mode is limited to 120Hz.

Buying checklist for a real budget deal

  1. Set your console target: write down 4K, 120Hz, VRR and preferred 4:4:4 output before comparing prices.
  2. Open the exact manual: confirm HDMI bandwidth, FRL, chroma and input-specific refresh limits.
  3. Check the regional SKU: suffixes can identify different stands, tuners, firmware or port specifications.
  4. Compare total cost: include delivery, taxes, a suitable cable if your existing one is inadequate, and any stand or arm you need.
  5. Review warranty and returns: confirm dead-pixel coverage, return duration and who handles service in your country.
  6. Check stock at checkout: a cached product page or marketplace listing may not represent current inventory.
  7. Save the specification page: keep a copy of the model’s HDMI and VRR claims in case the listing changes.

Setup steps for PS5 or Xbox Series X

  1. Connect the console to a port identified as HDMI 2.1 on the monitor, using a cable rated for the required high-speed mode.
  2. Open the console’s video settings and enable 120Hz output and VRR where available.
  3. Set the resolution to 3840×2160 and run the console’s compatibility or information check.
  4. Open the monitor’s information screen and confirm 3840×2160 at 120Hz. Check the reported color format if the display exposes it.
  5. If 120Hz is missing, try the other HDMI 2.1 input, disable an incompatible picture mode, and update the monitor firmware if the manufacturer provides an update.
  6. If the console reports 4:2:0 on a model advertised that way, that is a mode limitation rather than a cable defect. Decide whether the chroma trade-off is acceptable or return to a full-chroma model.

Common problems and fixes

The console shows 60Hz only

First verify that the console is connected to an HDMI 2.1 input and that the monitor’s input mode is not set to a compatibility or HDMI 1.4 option. Check the manual for the maximum refresh rate on that input. If the model does not document 4K/120Hz, no cable can create that mode.

VRR is greyed out

Enable VRR in both the console and monitor menus, then test another input. Some displays require a specific gaming mode. Confirm that VRR is supported over HDMI for the console resolution you selected.

Text looks colored or fuzzy

Inspect the console’s color format. A 4:2:0 mode lowers chroma resolution and can soften small colored text. Use a 4:4:4-capable input and mode when documented, or choose a monitor whose console specification explicitly supports full chroma.

HDR looks washed out

Entry-level HDR may have limited brightness and no effective local dimming. Compare the game’s HDR calibration screen with SDR, reduce the console’s HDR output if the monitor’s image is consistently worse, and do not mistake HDR signal acceptance for OLED-level contrast.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which monitor should you buy?

Buy the ASUS TUF Gaming VG28UQL1A when documented PS5/Xbox 4K/120Hz at 4:4:4 is your first priority and its current local price, warranty and stock are reasonable. Choose the Gigabyte M28U when USB-C, KVM and a hub materially simplify your desk and you accept the reported 4:2:0 console mode. Consider the LG 27GR93U-B only after verifying its bandwidth and chroma documentation. The MSI and Philips models are compelling specification candidates, but their value depends on current regional pricing and availability that were not established here.

Recheck retailer pricing, stock, warranty, returns and the exact regional SKU immediately before purchase. These factors can turn a technically excellent monitor into a poor budget choice—or make an older model the better deal when it is discounted responsibly.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
