There is no single best budget Chromebook for every student. The right choice depends on browser workload, screen and portability needs, the exact RAM and storage configuration, and how many years of ChromeOS updates remain. For a typical school-and-home workload, the Acer Chromebook Plus 515 configuration listed by Google is a sensible starting point: Core i3-1305, 8 GB of RAM, 128 GB of storage and a 15.6-inch Full HD screen for a US starting MSRP of $429.99. Choose the Acer Chromebook Plus 516 instead when its 16-inch 1920×1200 display is more useful than saving $49.01 on the smaller model. Those are catalog examples, not universal winners or guaranteed sale prices.
Use this guide to match a Chromebook to essays, research, video calls, streaming and everyday web apps; identify when ChromeOS is the wrong platform; and check the device’s model-specific automatic-update end date before paying. Google lists a general policy of 10 years of automatic updates, but each model has its own final date.

What a budget Chromebook is good for
Chromebooks run ChromeOS and are designed around the browser, supported Android or web apps, cloud storage and automatic updates. That makes them particularly practical when a student’s work consists of web research, learning-management-system assignments, documents, spreadsheets, email, video meetings and streaming. A modest processor and 8 GB of memory can handle that pattern without the cost and maintenance of a conventional laptop aimed at demanding desktop software.

The word budget describes price, not a fixed performance level. A low-priced model with 4 GB of RAM, a weak display or little update life can be frustrating, while a discounted model with a newer processor and 8 GB of RAM may be a better value. Compare the complete specification and the device’s support date, not a family name printed on a retailer page.

When ChromeOS is a poor fit
Check course and school requirements before buying. A student guide from TechRadar treats essays and online research as good Chromebook tasks, but warns that demanding video editing and 3D rendering may require another class of computer. Specialist desktop applications, proctored exams, engineering tools, local development environments, unusual peripherals or extensive offline work can also change the decision. The compatibility of a particular school system or course is not guaranteed by the Chromebook brand; ask the institution for its required software, browser, extensions and exam rules.
Current budget examples and what they are for
Google’s US catalog provides two useful reference configurations. The prices below are starting MSRPs shown in the catalog accessed in 2026, not promises of a current retailer price. An individual retailer may sell a different processor, screen or storage capacity under the same family name.
| Model and listed configuration | Catalog price | Likely role | Verify before buying |
|---|---|---|---|
| Acer Chromebook Plus 515; Intel Core i3-1305, 8 GB RAM, 128 GB storage, 15.6-inch 1920×1080 display | $429.99 starting MSRP (US catalog) | Mainstream school, work and home use | Exact SKU, live price, weight, ports, update end date and seller availability |
| Acer Chromebook Plus 516; Intel Core i3-1315U, 8 GB RAM, 128 GB storage, 16-inch 1920×1200 display | $479 starting MSRP (US catalog) | Larger-screen option for side-by-side documents and research | Exact SKU, live price, weight, ports, update end date and seller availability |
| ASUS Chromebook CX15 | Not stated in the cited evidence | Lower-cost model to investigate | Current configuration, price, screen quality, RAM, update date and independent review evidence |
| HP Chromebook Plus 15.6-inch | Not stated in the cited evidence | Essays, online research and general academic work | Exact configuration, update date and compatibility with the student’s courses |
The 515 and 516 are examples of how a small price difference can buy a different working area rather than a radically different class of computer. The 516’s 16-inch 1920×1200 panel gives more vertical pixels than the 515’s 1920×1080 panel, which can reduce scrolling or make split-screen reading and writing more comfortable. A student who carries a laptop between classes should check the exact dimensions and weight; the cited catalog does not establish a comparable weight for these models.

Browser-centered schoolwork
For essays, online research, cloud documents, learning portals, email and ordinary video calls, prioritize 8 GB of RAM, a current processor, a comfortable keyboard and a screen you can read for long sessions. Storage is still relevant for downloads and offline files, but ChromeOS workloads often rely on web storage. The 8 GB/128 GB configurations listed for the Acer Chromebook Plus 515 and 516 are therefore useful reference points, not a universal minimum for every Chromebook.
Everyday home use
Streaming, shopping, personal email, photo uploads, web banking and a handful of open tabs generally fit the same class of machine. Choose screen size according to viewing distance and desk space. A 15.6-inch or 16-inch laptop can be easier for documents and media, while a smaller device is usually easier to carry; decide using the exact product’s dimensions and weight rather than assumptions about its series.
Heavy creative or technical work
High-intensity video editing, 3D rendering and software that requires a full desktop operating system are warning signs. ChromeOS may offer a web or Android alternative, but that is a compatibility question, not a performance promise. Confirm the required application, plug-ins, file formats, exam browser and peripheral support with the school or employer before ordering.

How much processor and memory do you need?
Model names hide important differences. A Chromebook with a Core i3 processor and 8 GB of RAM can behave very differently from a cheaper version with a lower-tier processor and 4 GB. More open tabs, video meetings, large spreadsheets and Android apps increase memory pressure. The available evidence does not establish a universal RAM floor, so treat 8 GB as a practical target for a student who expects to multitask rather than as a guarantee of speed.
Read the complete listing for processor model, RAM, storage type and capacity. Do not assume that every Chromebook Plus 515 or CX15 has the same parts. Retailers sometimes use a family name for several screen resolutions, processors and storage options. Record the product number or SKU and compare that identifier with the manufacturer’s specification page and the seller’s return policy.
Storage decisions
128 GB, as listed on the two Acer examples, gives room for ChromeOS, downloads, offline documents and some media. If a student keeps large video files, downloaded course material or Android apps locally, more capacity may be worthwhile. Cloud storage can reduce the need for a large drive, but it does not remove the need to plan for flights, outages or school locations with unreliable internet. Check whether storage is user-expandable; do not assume it is.
Screen size, resolution and portability
A 15.6-inch 1920×1080 display is a conventional workspace. The 16-inch 1920×1200 panel in the catalog’s Chromebook Plus 516 adds vertical space, which can help when a citation page and a draft are visible together. Larger panels can also make text and video more comfortable at a desk, but they increase the footprint you carry and may draw more power depending on the design.
Look for the exact panel resolution, brightness information, finish and viewing angles. The supplied model data does not provide a controlled brightness comparison, so avoid declaring one screen superior without a measured test. A glossy, dim display can be harder to use in a classroom even when its diagonal size looks attractive. Check keyboard layout, trackpad size, webcam placement, USB ports, headphone connection and any included charger in the exact SKU.

Google Chromebook Help states: “Chromebooks receive 10 years of automatic updates.” That is a general policy, not a promise that every used Chromebook has ten years left. Google also explains that after a device reaches its final software update, it no longer receives ChromeOS or browser updates, including security updates, bug fixes and new features; some apps that require newer versions may lose support.

Use Google’s Chromebook update-schedule page and the Chrome Enterprise and Education Auto Update policy table to check the exact model identifier. Search by the full model and board or SKU where available. A family label can cover several devices with different end dates. This check matters especially for clearance and used listings: a low purchase price is less attractive if only a short support period remains.
What the end date means in practice
- Before purchase, write down the model’s automatic-update expiration date from Google’s table.
- Compare that date with how long the student expects to use the laptop.
- Allow for the possibility that an app, browser extension or school service will require a newer ChromeOS or browser version.
- Keep the seller’s return window and warranty information in case the delivered SKU does not match the listing.
Battery claims need context
Battery life is not a single comparable number. Google says actual battery life varies with model, configuration, processor, display, apps, settings, operating conditions and features. A manufacturer estimate therefore describes a test condition, not a promise that a student will get the same runtime while using video calls, high brightness and many tabs.
When comparing listings, record the stated test method if one is provided, then look for the battery capacity and charger details in the exact specification. A controlled, cross-model battery test for the examples in this guide is not established, so there is no defensible claim that one lasts longer than the others. Students who spend all day away from outlets should prioritize a reliable return policy and carry the supplied charger or a compatible replacement rather than relying on an estimate.
A practical buying process
- List the required software. Ask the school or employer about desktop-only applications, exam browsers, extensions, offline access, file formats and peripherals. Eliminate ChromeOS if a required tool has no supported alternative.
- Set a total budget. Include tax, delivery, a possible external drive or sleeve and any required adapter. Use the $429.99 and $479 catalog MSRPs only as US reference points; check the live price and configuration at checkout.
- Choose the working size. Select a smaller chassis for frequent carrying or a 15.6-inch/16-inch class screen for side-by-side reading and writing. Confirm dimensions and weight from the exact product page.
- Filter the hardware. Compare processor model, RAM, storage, display resolution and brightness, keyboard, webcam, ports and wireless specification. Treat 8 GB RAM as a sensible multitasking target, not a blanket rule.
- Check support life. Copy the full model identifier into Google’s update table and record the final automatic-update date before paying.
- Validate the seller listing. Make sure the title, photos and specifications describe the same SKU. Verify warranty region, return period, keyboard layout, charger and whether the device is new, refurbished or used.
- Test immediately. On arrival, confirm the processor, memory, storage and display in ChromeOS settings; install required school software; test the webcam, microphone, keyboard, trackpad, ports, Wi-Fi and sleep/wake behavior while the return window is open.
How the example models fit different buyers
Acer Chromebook Plus 515
The catalog’s 15.6-inch 1920×1080 configuration combines a Core i3-1305 processor, 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage at a $429.99 starting US MSRP. It is the clearest mainstream reference for a student who wants a large conventional screen without moving to the 16-inch option. Confirm the exact SKU, weight, ports, live price and update date because another 515 listing may not share these specifications.
Acer Chromebook Plus 516
The listed 516 uses an Intel i3-1315U, 8 GB of RAM, 128 GB of storage and a 16-inch 1920×1200 display, with a $479 starting US MSRP. Its additional screen area is the reason to choose it over the 515, not an assumption that every 516 is faster in every workload. Verify dimensions, weight, panel details and support date for the particular listing.
ASUS Chromebook CX15
TechRadar identifies the CX15 as a wallet-friendly budget option, but the cited material does not establish one configuration, current price, screen quality, RAM amount or update end date. Treat it as a candidate for further checking rather than a confirmed cheapest or best choice. Compare its exact SKU against the same workload and support criteria used for the Acer examples.

| Factor | Question to answer | Why it changes the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Total price | What is the delivered price for this exact SKU in your country? | MSRP and sale prices change, and a cheap old model may have less support left. |
| Processor and RAM | Which processor and how much memory are installed? | They affect tab-heavy work, video calls and multitasking. |
| Storage | How much is available, and can it be expanded? | Local media and offline files need more room than browser-only work. |
| Display | What are the diagonal size, resolution, brightness and finish? | They determine reading comfort, split-screen space and classroom usability. |
| Portability | What are the exact weight and dimensions? | A large screen is useful at a desk but costly to carry all day. |
| Input and connectivity | Are the keyboard, trackpad, webcam and required ports suitable? | Adapters and poor input hardware can undermine an otherwise adequate laptop. |
| Battery evidence | What test conditions produced the quoted runtime? | Real use varies with display, processor, apps, settings and operating conditions. |
| Support | What is the exact automatic-update end date? | It determines how long security and browser updates are expected. |
| Warranty and returns | Who provides service, for which region and for how long? | It reduces risk when a listing’s configuration or condition is wrong. |
Common buying mistakes and fixes
Buying the family name instead of the SKU
Symptom: the delivered laptop has less RAM, a different screen or a different processor than expected. Fix: save the product number before checkout and match it across the seller, manufacturer and update-policy pages.
Choosing a clearance model without checking support
Symptom: the laptop is inexpensive but reaches its final update soon. Fix: check the model-specific date first and compare the remaining years with the student’s planned ownership period.
Assuming every Chromebook handles specialist software
Symptom: a required exam browser, desktop editor, engineering package or peripheral will not install or function. Fix: obtain the institution’s compatibility requirements before purchase; browser access alone is not proof of support.
Using battery estimates as guarantees
Symptom: real runtime is much shorter during video calls or bright-screen use. Fix: read the test conditions, keep the return window available and plan charging around the student’s timetable.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Overspending on screen size while ignoring ergonomics
Symptom: the laptop is awkward to carry or does not fit the student’s desk. Fix: compare measured dimensions and weight, then decide whether the extra workspace is worth the portability cost.
Bottom line: make the support date and workload the tie-breakers
Start with the applications the student must run, then compare complete configurations. The Acer Chromebook Plus 515 listed by Google is a balanced reference at $429.99 US starting MSRP, while the $479 Acer Chromebook Plus 516 buys a larger 16-inch 1920×1200 workspace. The ASUS CX15 and HP Chromebook Plus 15.6-inch are reasonable candidates to investigate, but their exact configurations and support dates must be verified. Whichever model you choose, confirm the SKU, test hardware during the return period and check Google’s model-specific automatic-update table before treating a discount as a bargain.
