The best budget capture card depends on what you need to capture and what resolution and refresh rate you want on your play display. For a straightforward 1080p60 setup, compare the NZXT Signal HD60 with the AVerMedia Live Gamer MINI GC311. The NZXT accepts and passes through up to 4K60 but streams or records at up to 1080p; the GC311 passes through and records up to 1080p60. Check the exact modes, computer connection, and source compatibility before buying—“4K” may describe passthrough, not the recording sent to your computer.
Which budget capture card fits your setup?
Start with the signal you need to capture and whether you need to pass a separate signal to a display. Manufacturer specifications distinguish input, passthrough, and capture/recording; these are not interchangeable measures of maximum resolution.

Do you need a capture card?
If you play and stream on the same PC, you can usually capture the screen directly in OBS or similar software; a separate card is generally unnecessary. A capture card is useful when the source is a console, camera, mobile device, or second PC and you want to send its signal to a separate streaming computer. Elgato and NZXT describe direct screen capture for a single-PC setup and card-based capture for external sources.
#1 Best Overall
- 【1080P HD High Quality】Capture resolution up to 1080p for video source and it is ideal for all HDMI devices such as PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Wii U, DVDs, DSLR, Camera, Security Camera and set top box. Note: Video input supports 4K30/60Hz and 1080p120/144Hz. Does not support 4K120Hz/144Hz. Output supports up to 2K30Hz.
- 【Plug and Play】No driver or external power supply required, true PnP. Once plugged in, the device is identified automatically as a webcam. Detect input and adjust output automatically. Won't occupy CPU, optional audio capture. No freeze with correct setting.
- 【Compatible with Multiple Systems】suitable for Windows and Mac OS. High speed USB 3.0 technology and superior low latency technology makes it easier for you to transmit live streaming to Twitch, Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, OBS, Potplayer and VLC.
- 【HDMI LOOP-OUT】Based on the high-speed USB 3.0 technology, it can capture one single channel HD HDMI video signal. There is no delay when you are playing game live.
- 【Support Mic-in for Commentary】Rybozen capture card has microphone input and you can use it to add external commentary when playing a game. Please note: it only accepts 3.5mm TRS standard microphone headset.
AVerMedia’s ELENA beginner guide, published April 27, 2026, says, “1080p60 is still a solid standard for most live streaming.” This is the manufacturer’s qualitative guidance, not an independently measured audience statistic. If you do not need a higher-resolution recording, choosing a card for a 4K label alone may add no benefit.
Check compatibility before you buy
Match input, passthrough and recording modes
- Input: the HDMI signal the card can accept from the source.
- Passthrough: the signal the card sends onward to a display for play or monitoring.
- Capture/recording: the signal the card delivers to the computer for streaming or recording.
For example, NZXT describes the Signal HD60 as accepting and passing through up to 4K60 while limiting streaming and recording to 1080p. Confirm the full mode combination you require, including HDR or variable refresh rate (VRR), instead of treating one maximum-resolution figure as a promise about every output.

Check ports, software and source restrictions
- Confirm the source has a compatible HDMI output and supports the resolution and refresh rate you intend to use.
- Check the capture computer’s USB port against the card’s requirement. NZXT says its Signal cards require USB 3.2 Gen 1 or higher; the GC311 specification lists USB 2.0.
- Confirm your operating system and capture software are supported. NZXT documents OBS setup; Elgato lists supported apps and operating systems for the HD60 X.
- Check for HDCP or other source restrictions. AVerMedia says the GC311 does not support HDCP-protected capture.
- For a camera or phone, verify that it can output a compatible HDMI signal. An adapter may be needed, depending on the device.
Connect and set up a capture card
- Connect the source: run HDMI from the console, camera, mobile-device adapter, or second PC to the card’s HDMI input.
- Connect a play display if needed: run HDMI from the card’s output to the display. Check the card’s passthrough modes against your display and source settings.
- Connect the capture computer: use the card’s USB cable and a computer port that meets its requirements.
- Open your capture software: in OBS, add a Video Capture Device source and select the card. Adjust the source resolution and frame rate to a mode the card, source, and software all support.
- Check picture and sound: confirm the preview and audio in the streaming computer before going live. Extra HDMI cables, a compatible phone/camera adapter, or a console chat cable are only needed when your particular setup calls for them.
For a console, camera, or mobile-device setup, NZXT’s guide covers connection and OBS configuration: Streaming from your Console, Camera, or Mobile Device.

The card may pass a higher-resolution signal to your display while sending a lower-resolution capture feed to the streaming computer. Check the card’s separate capture specification, then confirm the source mode and the Video Capture Device settings in OBS. For the NZXT Signal HD60, 1080p streaming/recording is the documented limit even though input and passthrough can reach 4K60.

Do you need 4K?
Only choose a card based on 4K capture if you need the recording or stream output itself at that resolution. If your priority is playing on a 4K60 display while sending a 1080p feed to the computer, a card with 4K60 passthrough and 1080p capture may fit. Also verify HDR and high-refresh support for the specific mode you plan to use; the words “4K” or “60” alone do not establish either.
Common setup problems and fixes
- No picture in the capture software: confirm HDMI runs from the source to the card’s input, choose the card as the Video Capture Device, and test a source resolution supported by the card.
- No passthrough picture: check the HDMI connection from card output to display and verify that the source and display mode is supported by the card.
- Capture is blocked: check whether the source uses HDCP. The GC311 does not support HDCP-protected capture, according to AVerMedia.
- High-resolution capture is unavailable: distinguish passthrough from recording limits, then check the card, source, USB connection, and software settings for the desired mode.
- OBS does not show the device: verify the USB connection and required port speed, then confirm the operating system and software are supported for the specific model.
- Camera or phone will not output video: confirm that the device supports HDMI output and that any adapter is compatible with that device.
Or let it run in the cloud
A capture card handles getting a live source into a computer; it is not required to keep uploaded videos looping as a YouTube live stream. StreamNeo is a separate option for that use case: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It keeps the stream running from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Your video streams as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
