That flexibility has costs: account for the lens as part of the purchase, as well as the extra size and weight compared with a fixed-lens compact. RTINGS says the R50 brings meaningful autofocus and video improvements over the cheaper R100 for a relatively small price premium; actual prices vary, and no live prices were verified.
When is the Canon EOS R100 a better fit?
The R100 is the lower-cost new mirrorless alternative if keeping the initial outlay down matters more than the R50’s screen and video advantages. Its RF mount leaves open a future body upgrade, but the body alone is not a complete camera kit: check whether a lens is included and budget for one if not. Its fixed, non-touch screen and limited 4K video are practical compromises, and its current RF lens selection is smaller than that of more established systems.

When does a compact superzoom make more sense?

Screen articulation helps with framing
A fully articulated or tilting screen can make it easier to frame a child from a low angle or take a photo above a crowd. The R50 has an articulated screen; the SX740 has a tilt-up screen. The R100’s fixed screen offers less flexibility.
Indoor photos depend on more than the camera name
Sensor size is one consideration for indoor and low-light photography, but the lens and shooting conditions matter too.
