There is no single cheapest Azure VM configuration that can be recommended for every 24/7 YouTube stream in India. The right budget choice depends on your encoder, resolution, codec and bitrate, the Azure India region, and your account’s current rates. Compare a general-purpose D-family VM against your actual encoding workload, price outbound bandwidth as well as compute, and confirm the full monthly estimate in Azure’s pricing calculator before deploying.
What determines the right budget configuration?
A VM that can keep an encoder running is not automatically an economical streaming setup. Your monthly bill depends on more than the VM’s hourly compute rate: continuous outbound video traffic, storage, a public IP and any applicable OS licensing or other selected services can add to the total. Azure says estimates vary by agreement, purchase date and currency conversion, so a generic starting price is not a reliable India-specific monthly quote.

Start with the stream you actually intend to send. Record its resolution, codec, sustained bitrate and hours of operation; then determine whether the encoder will use CPU or a compatible GPU. Compare candidate VMs by their ability to encode that exact workload, not by a family label or advertised entry price.
Which Azure VM families should you compare?
Start with a general-purpose D-family VM for CPU encoding
Microsoft positions D family for general-purpose workloads. It is a sensible comparison point for a sustained CPU-encoding test, but that does not establish that any particular D-series size can encode your chosen format. Run a representative workload at the target resolution, codec and bitrate, and check that it sustains encoding without unacceptable CPU pressure or dropped frames.

Do not assume a B-family VM is best because it is economical
Microsoft describes B-family instances as burstable and suited to low-to-moderate baseline CPU use with occasional bursts. A 24/7 encoder may need sustained CPU capacity rather than occasional bursts. Consider B family only after verifying its behavior with your actual stream; its economical positioning alone does not show that it is the cheapest workable configuration.
Use an N-family VM only when GPU encoding justifies it
Microsoft identifies N family as GPU accelerated and lists a high starting price on its family page. A GPU VM is not the default budget choice: use one only if your chosen encoder supports the available GPU and a workload test or credible benchmark indicates that acceleration is worth the added cost. The available Azure information does not establish a YouTube-specific performance result for any VM size.

Estimate the complete monthly cost
Use Azure’s pricing calculator with the exact region, VM size, operating system and deployment resources you plan to use. Treat the result as an estimate, not a guaranteed quote; rates can depend on your agreement, the date you price the service and currency conversion.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPrice outbound video data, not just compute
Estimate monthly outbound data from the stream’s sustained bitrate and planned streaming hours, then select the applicable current egress route and usage tier in Azure’s calculator or bandwidth pricing information. Check the calculator’s units and tier thresholds rather than applying a headline bandwidth rate without confirming the relevant route, region, usage and currency. Azure lists Central India, South India and West India in Zone 2 for bandwidth pricing.

Include the resources the deployment needs
- VM compute for the full period you expect it to run.
- Outbound bandwidth for the actual stream bitrate and operating hours.
- Managed disk and any additional storage; Azure’s Linux VM pricing page recommends managed disks for optimal performance.
- A public IP and any other billable resources required by your deployment.
- Applicable OS licensing and any other selected services shown by the calculator.
Use a workload-and-cost comparison
| Candidate | When to evaluate it | Budget check |
|---|---|---|
| D family | General-purpose VM to test for sustained CPU encoding. | Check actual encoding performance and calculate compute plus egress and supporting resources. |
| B family | Potential option if the workload fits its burstable, low-to-moderate baseline CPU profile. | Verify sustained encoding behavior; economical positioning does not establish suitability for continuous encoding. |
| N family | Only where the encoder can use its GPU acceleration. | Compare the higher VM cost with measured or credible workload evidence; do not assume GPU makes the all-in setup cheaper. |
These are family-level comparisons, not a ranked list of proven sizes. The information available does not establish a cheapest all-in India configuration or a VM size that will encode a particular YouTube format.
Configure and validate before relying on a VM
- Choose the stream specification. Set the intended resolution, codec, bitrate and continuous operating schedule before choosing a VM.
- Select the Azure India region and candidate VM sizes. Compare a general-purpose D-family option with any other candidate only if its workload characteristics fit your encoder. Check regional availability for the specific VM size.
- Test encoding under representative conditions. Run the actual encoder and stream settings long enough to observe sustained CPU or GPU behavior, output stability and dropped frames. Do not infer encoding capacity from the VM family name.
- Build the full estimate in Azure’s pricing calculator. Enter the region, VM size and OS, expected runtime, egress usage, managed disk, public IP and other required resources. Recheck the current tariff and your account’s pricing conditions.
- Validate the complete streaming path. A VM selection alone cannot guarantee an uninterrupted stream. Confirm that the encoder, network connection, stream configuration and YouTube ingestion path work together, and plan how you will detect and recover from an interruption.
Common budgeting and reliability mistakes
- Choosing by hourly compute price alone: add outbound bandwidth and all required supporting resources to the monthly estimate.
- Assuming burstable means suitable for continuous encoding: test B-family behavior under the intended sustained workload.
- Paying for a GPU without an encoder benefit: verify compatibility and compare workload evidence against the larger VM cost.
- Using a generic starting price as an India quote: price the chosen region and exact resources in the calculator under your own pricing conditions.
- Treating VM choice as an uptime guarantee: no VM size alone guarantees an uninterrupted end-to-end YouTube stream.
Or let it run in the cloud
If managing an Azure VM and encoder is more work than you want, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams what you upload at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
