The right buy depends on your activity and the live price in your region. The DJI Osmo Action 4 is the strongest value candidate when discounted, with 4K recording at up to 120fps, 1080p at up to 240fps and 18m waterproofing. The AKASO Brave 8 Lite costs less and adds front and rear screens, but its stabilization and low-light quality are clear compromises. A discounted previous-generation GoPro HERO12 Black is another model worth checking before you commit to a newer low-cost camera.
Use the guide below to compare the complete setup—camera, card, mounts, battery and housing—not just the headline camera price.

What “budget” means for an action camera
“Budget” is a moving target. A camera can fall below the often-used $300 search threshold one week and return to a higher price the next. Older flagship models also enter this category when retailers clear inventory. That is why a lower-specification new camera is not automatically better value than a discounted model from a major camera line.
For a fair comparison, use the price you can actually pay in your country on the day you buy, then add the accessories required for your activity. A camera that needs a separate waterproof housing, proprietary mount or spare battery may cost more than its body-only listing suggests.
#1 Best Overall
- 4K Ultra HD action camera: Professional 4K30Fps & 2.7K30Fps video with 20MP photos at up to 30 frames per second for incredible photos, which is 4 times the resolution of traditional HD cameras.
- Smooth Stabilization: Built-in Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) delivers steady and smooth videos. It can enable excellent footage even you or the object is in fast-moving.
- 131ft waterproof camera: AKASO EK7000 is designed to withstand extreme environments, together with durable waterproof case. With the accessories, transform it for indoor and outdoor activities.
- Wireless wrist remote control sports camera: With a wrist 2.4G remote, you can capture the world in an all-new way. Controlling the camera, framing shots or recording video is convenient. (THE REMOTE IS NOT WATERPROOF)
- Built-in Wi-Fi, edit & share your action in minutes: Just download App(AKASO GO) on your phone or tablet and connect with this action camera. Wi-Fi signal ranges up to 10 meters. MicroSD card is not included.
The phrase “best action camera under $300” is useful for narrowing a search, but it does not identify a single winner. Underwater users, cyclists, runners and casual vacation shooters place different demands on stabilization, water protection, screens and frame rates.
Shortlist: three cameras worth price-checking
| Camera | Why consider it | Evidence-backed strengths | Main compromises |
|---|---|---|---|
| DJI Osmo Action 4 | Older-generation value when discounted | 4K up to 120fps; 1080p up to 240fps; 18m waterproofing, according to TechRadar’s current action-camera guide | 10MP still photos and a minimum-focus-distance limitation make it less attractive for close-up stills; value depends on today’s price |
| AKASO Brave 8 Lite | Lower-cost casual camera | Front and rear displays; vivid 4K in ideal light; TechRadar reports 150 minutes at 1080p in its review | Stabilization struggles during shaky movement, low-light footage is noisy and the construction was described as flimsy |
| GoPro HERO12 Black | Previous-generation flagship to compare against a discounted new budget model | Former flagship positioning can make it compelling when a current listing is heavily reduced | Check the actual regional price, stock, warranty and bundle before treating it as a bargain |
The table deliberately avoids a fixed “winner” price. Promotions, bundles and regional availability change too quickly for an evergreen number to be reliable.
How to evaluate a budget action camera
1. Stabilization for the movement you will record
Electronic stabilization matters most when the camera is attached to a body, bicycle or vehicle. Walking, running and cycling introduce rapid vibrations that can make otherwise sharp 4K footage uncomfortable to watch. Compare stabilization examples recorded during the activity you intend to film, not only smooth panning shots from a tripod.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
TechRadar’s review of the Brave 8 Lite found that stabilization struggles in shaky scenarios. That makes it a poor fit for moving point-of-view footage unless you can accept visible shake or plan to use a separate stabilizing setup.
2. Low-light performance
Small action-camera sensors lose quality as light falls. Check samples from dusk, forests, interiors and shaded streets rather than judging a camera only by bright beach footage. The Brave 8 Lite’s review footage showed substantial noise in low light, so its strongest use case is casual daytime recording.
3. Waterproof depth and housing requirements
“Waterproof” is not a universal specification. Verify the stated depth, whether that rating applies without a separate case, the maximum time at depth and whether the battery door must be fully latched. The Osmo Action 4 is listed at 18m waterproofing by TechRadar. Treat that as a model specification, then confirm the exact configuration in the manufacturer’s current documentation before diving or using the camera in surf.

Built-in smart gyroscope technology ensures shock-resistant and stable shooting, leading to incredibly smooth, professional-looking footage that stands out from the competition.

- 131FT Waterproof Camera and Dual Screen: Place your action camera into the waterproof case and securely fasten it, then you can dive below 40 meters. This underwater camera is ideal for water sports such as swimming, surfing, diving, etc. Equipped with a 2“ rear screen and 0.96” front screen, you can effortlessly shoot in various scenarios, ensuring you get the perfect shot every time.
- Free Valuable Accessories: This underwater camera comes with a USB Dual Charger and 2 rechargeable 1050mAh batteries, each battery can record up to 90 minutes. We have optimized some accessories for the new version of Brave 4 to make it more suitable for bicycle/motorcycle activities. The kits are available for most kinds of cameras even Gopro. The remote wristband is not waterproof.
4. Resolution and frame rate
4K gives you more detail and room to crop. High frame rates let you slow action in editing: the Action 4 reaches 4K at up to 120fps and 1080p at up to 240fps. High-frame-rate modes usually require more storage and can reduce low-light flexibility, so choose them for motion that benefits from slow playback rather than leaving them enabled for every clip.
5. Screen layout
A front screen helps when you are filming yourself; a rear screen is useful for framing from behind the camera. The Brave 8 Lite has both front and rear displays, a practical advantage for vlogging and group shots. A dual-screen design does not compensate for weak stabilization or noisy night footage, so weigh convenience against image quality.
6. Mounts, microphones and app connections
Check the camera’s mounting interface and the hardware included in the exact bundle. A helmet, chest, handlebar or selfie-stick setup may require a frame, adapter or different screw standard. Verify microphone support and app connectivity if you need an external mic, remote control or quick phone transfers. Compatibility can differ by camera generation and by bundle.
7. Battery and the complete kit
Battery claims depend on resolution, frame rate, stabilization, temperature and screen use. TechRadar reports 150 minutes at 1080p for the Brave 8 Lite in its review; do not assume that figure applies to 4K, high-frame-rate or cold-weather recording. Budget for a spare battery or charging plan if you will film all day.
Top pick: DJI Osmo Action 4 when the discount is real
The Osmo Action 4 is the most convincing value-oriented choice in this shortlist when its current price is close to that of new budget cameras. It combines high-frame-rate options with substantial water resistance, making it versatile for travel, cycling, skiing and water activities.
What it does well
- Records 4K at up to 120fps for detailed slow-motion footage.
- Offers 1080p recording at up to 240fps when you prefer very high slow-motion playback.
- Is listed with 18m waterproofing in TechRadar’s action-camera guide.
- Comes from an established action-camera line, so compare its mount and accessory ecosystem with the bundle you are considering.
Where it falls short
The camera is not an ideal still-photography substitute. TechRadar lists 10MP still-image resolution and notes a minimum-focus-distance limitation, so close-up subjects and detailed stills are not its strongest use. If your priority is extracting high-quality photographs rather than recording action video, account for that trade-off.

- Stunning 4K30FPS Video & 30MP Image – Ultra HD Action Camera 4K Experience: Capture crystal-clear visuals with 4K30FPS video and high-resolution 30MP photos, making this a powerful video camera for POV and helmet-mounted video recording. Whether biking, hiking, or traveling, enjoy pro-level footage in extreme clarity.
- Waterproof Camera for Snorkeling, Surfing & Diving – 131FT Underwater Use: With its included waterproof housing, the Speed10 becomes a powerful underwater camera capable of going down to 131 feet. Perfect for snorkeling, diving, or capturing moments in wet, rugged environments—an ideal waterproof camera underwater for snorkeling and exploration.
- Built-in EIS & 170° Wide Angle – Smooth & Immersive Footage: Enjoy smooth, shake-free recording thanks to Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS), while the 170° ultra-wide-angle lens ensures everything stays in frame. Use it as a motorcycle camera, bike camera, video camera for immersive riding and sports footage.
- WiFi + Smart App Control – Share Instantly Anytime: Easily connect the action cam to your smartphone via WiFi to control, preview, and download videos through the smart app. Instantly share your best clips on social media—perfect for travelers, vloggers, and creators needing a compact 4K camera for video recording.
- Complete Kit with Remote & 64GB Card – Ready for Action Anytime: Includes 64GB card, remote control, supporting up to 256GB expansion. Whether you're using it as a sports camera, pov camera, bike camera, helmet camera, or action cam for long journeys, it's fully equipped for uninterrupted recording.
It is also an older generation. That is not automatically a disadvantage, but it means the price must be genuinely lower than newer alternatives with comparable accessories. A dated deal report from TechRadar recorded a temporary US price of $169 and a UK price of £159 in 2026; those figures describe a past promotion, not a current offer.
Who should buy it
Choose the Action 4 when you find a current, like-for-like deal and need a balanced camera for moving footage, high-frame-rate recording and water use. Confirm the seller, warranty, included battery and mounting hardware before ordering.
Lower-cost compromise: AKASO Brave 8 Lite
The Brave 8 Lite is aimed at buyers who want a lower initial outlay and a straightforward camera for bright outdoor scenes. Its front and rear screens are useful for self-recording, framing a group and checking composition without turning the camera around.

- Dual front and rear displays make self-framing easier.
- TechRadar describes its 4K footage as vivid in ideal light.
- TechRadar’s review reports 150 minutes at 1080p; treat that as a review result for that mode, not a universal runtime for every setting.
Compromises to accept
Stabilization is the decisive weakness for movement. TechRadar reports disappointing results in shaky situations such as walking or cycling. If your clips will be mounted to a helmet or handlebar, this limitation is more important than the dual-screen convenience.
Low-light footage also shows substantial noise, and the review describes the construction as flimsy. Use it for daylight vacations, occasional family clips or a low-cost secondary camera rather than assuming it will match a more expensive model after sunset.
Who should buy it
Consider the Brave 8 Lite if the lowest upfront cost and dual screens matter more than polished stabilization, night image quality or premium construction. Compare the complete bundle with discounted older models before deciding.

- Superior Low-Light Performance with 1/1.3-inch Sensor - Struggling with grainy footage in low light? Osmo Action 4 action camera 4K uses 2.4μm pixel size for crisp results. Auto white balance adjusts color for true-to-life, flicker-free shots, even underwater.
- Pro-Grade Color Science - Worried your videos lack real-life colors? 10-bit color depth captures subtle shades, while D-Log M preserves more detail and dynamic range for professional editing later. Osmo Action 4 vlogging camera helps you enhance vibrant scenery.
- See More, Feel More - Want to capture more action and scenery? Shoot in 4K at 120fps with a 155° ultra-wide field of view. Minimal cropping means immersive FPV footage. Use it as a motorcycle camera or underwater camera and enjoy stunning sceneries!
- Cold-Resistant, Long-Lasting Battery - Tired of your travel camera dying in the cold? The 1770mAh battery lasts up to 150 minutes [6] and works in temps as low as -20°C (-4°F). Plus, with waterproofing up to 18m [3], DJI Osmo Action 4 is ready for outdoor adventures.
- Effortless Perspective Shifts - Frustrated by slow setup? The magnetic quick-release system lets you mount, switch angles, and go vertical in seconds [2]. The self-locking design keeps your action camera secure, so you can create without limits.
Previous-generation alternative: GoPro HERO12 Black
TechRadar lists the HERO12 Black among former flagship cameras worth considering for value. Its relevance to a budget shortlist comes from depreciation: a previous flagship can offer a stronger overall experience than a brand-new entry-level camera when the two listings are close in price.
The available product information does not establish a current universal price, stock position or bundle for the HERO12 Black. Check a live listing in your region and compare the contents of the box, warranty and accessory requirements with the Action 4 and Brave 8 Lite. Do not pay a flagship-era price simply because the model name is familiar.
How to choose the best action camera under $300
- Define the activity. Write down whether you will film underwater, while cycling or running, on a tripod, or mainly during daytime travel. This determines which compromises are acceptable.
- Set a complete-kit ceiling. Reserve money for a memory card, mount, spare battery, protective frame and any required housing. Compare totals, not body-only prices.
- Filter for stabilization. For moving point-of-view footage, eliminate cameras whose stabilization reviews show unacceptable shake. The Brave 8 Lite’s reported weakness is a warning sign for this use.
- Confirm water protection. Read the exact depth rating and whether it requires a case. The Action 4’s 18m figure is useful only when your planned setup meets the same conditions.
- Choose the frame-rate target. Select 4K120 or 1080p240 only when you need slow motion; otherwise use a mode that balances detail, storage and battery life.
- Check the screens. If you film yourself frequently, a front display can save time. If you operate the camera from behind, a rear screen may be sufficient.
- Verify accessories and connectivity. Confirm mount standards, microphone support, app compatibility and what is actually included in the selected regional bundle.
- Compare live, like-for-like listings. Check the final delivered price, seller, warranty, stock and return policy on the same day. Recheck older models because promotions can change their value overnight.
Best fit by activity
| Use case | Priority | Shortlist guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Underwater trips and surface water sports | Verified depth rating and housing requirements | Start with the Action 4’s listed 18m rating, then confirm the exact setup before submersion. |
| Cycling, running and walking POV | Stabilization and secure mounting | Favor a model with proven shake control; the Brave 8 Lite’s reported stabilization problems are a serious caution. |
| Daylight vacation and family clips | Simple framing, screens and low total cost | The Brave 8 Lite’s dual displays suit casual daylight use if its image-quality compromises are acceptable. |
| Slow-motion sports | High frame rates and sufficient storage | The Action 4 supports up to 4K120 and 1080p240; plan for larger files and faster battery drain. |
| Discount-focused buyers | Current price compared with previous-generation flagships | Check the Action 4 and HERO12 Black alongside new budget cameras instead of assuming the newest model is the best value. |
Budget for the accessories that make the camera usable
A camera body is only one part of an action setup. Before checkout, price the following items for the exact model and activity:
- Memory card: Match the card specification recommended for the selected resolution and frame rate.
- Mount or adapter: Verify helmet, chest, handlebar and tripod compatibility rather than assuming all action-camera mounts fit directly.
- Spare battery and charger: Useful for full-day recording, especially when using 4K or high frame rates.
- Protective frame: Some mounts and microphone arrangements require a camera-specific frame.
- Waterproof housing: Buy one when your depth or activity exceeds the camera’s bare-body rating, and confirm that it preserves access to the controls you need.
- Microphone accessories: Check whether the camera needs an adapter and whether the chosen frame leaves the connector accessible.
Bundle contents vary by retailer and region. Read the contents list line by line and compare equivalent bundles before calling one camera cheaper.
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming every “waterproof” camera has the same protection
Depth ratings differ, and some require a housing. Treat the number as a specification tied to a configuration, not as permission for unlimited underwater use.

Buying a camera before checking the mount
A camera that cannot attach securely to your existing helmet, chest harness or handlebar creates extra cost and can produce unusable footage. Confirm the interface and included adapters first.
Comparing body prices instead of complete setups
Add the card, battery, frame, housing and mount. A discounted older model may become more expensive after accessories, while a bundle with the right hardware may be the better value.
Treating a temporary promotion as a permanent price
Historical deal prices are useful evidence that a model can become affordable, not a promise that the same offer still exists. Recheck the live listing immediately before purchase.

Final buying advice
Start with the DJI Osmo Action 4 if its current price makes the older model meaningfully cheaper than newer alternatives and you need strong frame-rate options plus substantial water resistance. Choose the AKASO Brave 8 Lite only when its lower cost and dual screens outweigh weak stabilization, noisy low-light footage and less reassuring construction. Put the GoPro HERO12 Black on the comparison list when a current discount brings it into the same budget, then judge the complete bundle rather than the badge.
The best budget action camera is therefore the one that meets your activity’s non-negotiable requirement—stabilization for movement, verified water protection for immersion or usable screens for self-framing—at a live, complete-kit price you can verify.
