Best Budget 85-Inch TVs: What to Know Before You Buy

For most U.S. buyers, the TCL QM6K is the best budget 85-inch TV to start with. It combines local dimming, 4K at 144Hz, gaming features, Dolby Vision, and Google TV, and it is available in an 85-inch size. If getting the lowest price matters more than dark-scene contrast or high-refresh-rate gaming, consider the Hisense QD6QF; RTINGS reported that its 85-inch version regularly sells for just under $1,000, but that is not a guaranteed current price.

Which budget 85-inch TV should you choose?

Best balance: TCL QM6K

The QM6K is the strongest starting point for a budget-minded buyer who still wants useful picture and gaming features. RTINGS names it its best budget TV and lists an 85-inch version; TechRadar also identifies it as its U.S. budget pick in its 85-inch TV guide. Its local dimming can improve dark-scene contrast, and its 144Hz panel, VRR, Dolby Vision, and Google TV make it a more capable all-around set than a bare-minimum large screen. RTINGS’ budget-TV guide and TechRadar’s 85-inch TV guide support those recommendations.

There is an important price caveat: the cited coverage does not establish a verified live price for the QM6K’s 85-inch variant. Check the exact size and seller listing rather than assuming that a price shown for a smaller model applies.

Lowest-cost route to 85 inches: Hisense QD6QF

RTINGS reports that the 85-inch QD6QF can regularly be found just under $1,000. Treat that as a recurring price observation in its guide, not a guaranteed offer. The trade-off is a simpler picture and gaming feature set: it lacks local dimming, is dimmer in HDR than the QM6K, and its HDMI 2.0 bandwidth limits 4K gaming to 60Hz. It supports VRR and Dolby Vision and uses Fire TV. RTINGS’ QD6QF coverage details these points.

Step-up option: TCL QM7K

If your budget can stretch, the QM7K is worth comparing, though Tom’s Guide places it in an under-$1,500 category rather than the strictest budget tier. Its listed features include 4K, 144Hz, Google TV, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and two HDMI 2.1 ports. Tom’s Guide’s stated drawbacks are off-angle and bright-room viewing limitations, only two HDMI 2.1 ports, and poor built-in audio. Tom’s Guide’s QM7K coverage is the source for this specification and trade-off summary.

What matters most when buying an 85-inch TV

Confirm the price for the 85-inch version

Large-screen models often have size-specific pricing. Before checkout, make sure the listing explicitly says 85 inches and verify the seller, stock, delivery cost, and return terms. A smaller QM6K or QM7K sale price is not evidence of the 85-inch price. Availability and offers vary, so treat any published price observation as a starting point rather than a promise.

Match contrast to your viewing habits

Local dimming on the QM6K can give dark scenes stronger contrast, but RTINGS reports visible glow around bright lights and subtitles. The QD6QF has no local dimming, so black areas can look gray, particularly in a dark room. If you watch movies with the lights low, that difference may matter more than a small price gap.

Consider room brightness and reflections

RTINGS says the QM6K can handle some glare, but its reflection handling is poor in bright spaces. The QD6QF is described as only just bright enough for moderate lighting. For a sunlit room or strong overhead lights, neither set should be assumed to overcome reflections; consider how and when you watch before prioritizing screen size alone.

Check the gaming setup, not just the refresh-rate headline

The QM6K’s 4K/144Hz capability, VRR, and two HDMI 2.1 ports are useful for compatible PCs and consoles. The QD6QF supports VRR, but HDMI 2.0 bandwidth limits it to 4K/60Hz. Count the HDMI 2.1 inputs you need for your devices: the QM6K has two, and the QM7K also has two. A high refresh rate on the spec sheet does not remove port or device limitations.

Choose the streaming platform and HDR formats you use

The QM6K and QM7K use Google TV, while the QD6QF uses Fire TV. The QM6K and QD6QF support Dolby Vision; the QM7K lists Dolby Vision and HDR10+. Check that the apps and format support you care about are available on the chosen set.

Budget separately for sound if needed

A large screen does not guarantee strong built-in audio. Tom’s Guide specifically flags poor built-in audio on the QM7K. If sound quality is a priority, assess audio independently and account for a soundbar only if it fits the total budget.

How to make the final choice

  1. Set a ceiling for the whole purchase. Include any delivery charges and, if relevant, a separate audio upgrade.
  2. Filter for 85-inch listings. Confirm the exact model and screen size before comparing prices or checking stock.
  3. Choose based on the main compromise. Start with the QM6K for the broader feature mix, consider the QD6QF when lowest cost is the priority, or compare the QM7K if you can spend more.
  4. Check your room and devices. Weigh reflections and dark-scene performance against your lighting, and verify that the set has the refresh rate and HDMI ports your gaming devices require.
  5. Review seller, delivery, and returns. Confirm the current terms on the retailer’s listing before placing the order.

What the recommendations and price evidence establish

The recommendations are U.S.-oriented. RTINGS says it verified its budget-TV picks on October 6, 2026, and TechRadar’s 85-inch guide was updated September 4, 2026; TechRadar says it changed its U.S. budget pick to the QM6K in September 2025 based on testing. These sources support the model comparisons above, but prices, stock, delivery, and returns are time- and seller-dependent. RTINGS and TechRadar provide the dated guide context.
