For curly and coily natural hair, the most reliable choice is a detangling brush designed for curls, or a wide-tooth comb, used on thoroughly wet hair with conditioner or leave-in product. No single brush is proven best for every natural hair type. Fineness, density, curl pattern, comfort in the hand, and the styling result you want all change which tool works well, so treat the options below as a way to narrow your choice rather than a single winner.
How the main tools compare
Three tools come up consistently in dermatology guidance: a detangling brush made for curly or coily hair, a wide-tooth comb, and fingers. The table summarizes what the sources state for each, and where they are silent the cell says so.

| Tool | Hair the sources associate with it | Design and bristle detail | Cautions stated by the source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Detangling brush for curly or coily hair | Curly and coily hair, used when wet (American Academy of Dermatology Association, last updated June 29, 2022; 2025 peer-reviewed review Hairbrushes: A Guide for Dermatologists) | Flexible bristles in varying stiffness; the review describes stiffer bristles as suited to curlier hair (2025 review) | Do not brush dry hair, which the AAD links to breakage and frizz; wet hair is more prone to breakage, so work gently (AAD; 2025 review) |
| Flexible-bristle detangling brush | Fine hair, to minimize breakage (2025 review) | More flexible bristles, per the 2025 review | Not stated beyond the general wet-hair caution in the 2025 review |
| Wide-tooth comb | Curly, textured, or thick hair (2025 review); also named by the AAD as an alternative to a brush | Not stated in the sources | Wet hair is more prone to breakage, so move slowly (2025 review) |
| Fingers | Not stated; the AAD names fingers as a supported method for curly and coily hair | Not applicable | Not stated |
No independently published study that we could find compares detangling brushes head to head for natural hair. The table reflects what dermatology guidance and manufacturer material say, not a measured ranking.

Four factors decide most of the choice. Use them to pick a tool, then test it on a single wash day before committing to a routine.

- Fineness and density. The 2025 review says more flexible bristles suit fine hair, while stiffer bristles may suit curlier, thicker hair.
- When you detangle. Wash-day detangling happens with conditioner in the hair. Between-wash detangling should start with thoroughly wetting the hair and applying a leave-in, as the AAD advises.
- Your goal. Detangling alone is a different job from shaping or defining curls. Some brushes are marketed for defining curls, but that is a product feature rather than independently tested evidence.
- Comfort and dryness. The AAD notes that thick, curly hair is more prone to dryness and breakage. If your hair snags easily or feels dry afterward, slow down and add moisture rather than pushing harder.
What you need before you start
- A spray bottle or a sink or shower to wet hair thoroughly
- A conditioner or leave-in conditioner for slip during detangling
- Your chosen tool: a curl-designed detangling brush, a wide-tooth comb, or your fingers
- Clips or hair ties to hold sections apart
The detangling sequence
The sequence below follows the AAD’s curly-hair guidance and the practical instructions on a detangling brush manufacturer’s product page (LUS Brands). Treat the manufacturer steps as practical guidance rather than clinical proof. For wash-day detangling, skip to step 2 after shampooing and conditioning; for between-wash detangling, start at step 1.
- Saturate the hair. Wet it thoroughly so it is not merely damp.
- Apply conditioner or leave-in. Use enough that the strands feel slippery to the touch.
- Divide into manageable sections. Smaller sections make it easier to finish one area before moving on.
- Hold each section near the roots. Supporting the base of the section reduces pulling on the scalp.
- Loosen the ends first. Work the tool through the tips gently, then ease up toward the roots.
- Move upward only as the lower part clears. If a knot resists, stop and add more product rather than forcing the brush through.
A brush-specific example and its claim limits
Tangle Teezer’s US product page describes The Ultimate Detangler Naturally Curly as intended for 3C to 4C hair and for use on wet hair. The manufacturer describes longer, firmer teeth alongside shorter ones. The page also says the tool can cut detangling time in half. That figure comes from a self-assessment by 102 women after two weeks of use, reported by the manufacturer. It is not independent testing and should not be read as a guaranteed result for your hair.

Editorial round-ups add context but not proof. Allure’s May 13, 2025 round-up names Tangle Teezer, Felicia Leatherwood, Denman, and Bounce Curl among other options, with comments from hairstylists. It is not a controlled comparison and does not establish that any one brush is superior.

- Remove trapped hair from the bristles after each use.
- Clean out product residue that builds up between the bristles.
- Let the brush dry fully before storing it.
- Follow the specific product’s cleaning instructions, since materials and bristle designs differ.
Expect some trial and error
The AAD’s curly-hair guidance states: “Trial and error are often needed to find the best routine for curly or tightly coiled hair, so do not get discouraged if a certain product does not work for your hair type.” If a brush pulls or snags after a fair attempt with the sequence above, switch tools or product before changing the method.
