If you want Theater mode to return automatically, Theater Mode for YouTube is the narrowest solution. For exact player width and aspect-ratio controls, choose Magic Actions for YouTube. For a broad set of player, page-cleanup and pop-out controls, Enhancer for YouTube or Improve YouTube! are stronger fits. BigTube is a focused option for a large theater view with a scrolling miniplayer.
The right extension depends less on a single “best” feature than on how much of YouTube you want to change. A one-purpose extension is easier to troubleshoot; a suite can hide comments, recommendations, chat and end screens, but it also has more settings that can conflict with YouTube’s own layout changes.

What YouTube already provides without an extension
YouTube’s player is responsive: its official help says that, on a computer, the video-player size automatically adapts to the available space in the browser window. That means an extension is not required merely to make a video larger.
Two native modes cover the most common requests:
- Theater mode enlarges the player across the page without entering the browser’s full-screen mode. You can still see the surrounding YouTube page.
- Miniplayer reduces the video to a small floating player so you can continue browsing while playback continues.
Use the player’s Theater-mode button or the T keyboard shortcut when available. Native modes are the safest baseline because they are maintained with YouTube itself and do not require extra permissions. Install an extension when you need behavior YouTube does not expose, such as restoring Theater mode automatically, setting a precise width, hiding page sections, pinning a player while scrolling, or opening a custom pop-up.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Theater Mode for YouTube | Automatically using YouTube’s authentic Theater mode with almost no setup | Automatic Theater mode; supports the player’s T shortcut; no configurable options |
Not presented as a broad cleanup suite | Chrome Web Store listing; works even when the viewer is not logged in, according to the listing |
| Magic Actions for YouTube | Exact sizing and aspect-ratio control | Auto Wide Player, theater-width percentages, custom aspect ratio and Full-Window mode | Independent toggles for comments, related recommendations, end screens, annotations, Shorts shelves, community posts, live chat and the guide sidebar | Publisher says settings are stored locally, no account is required and processing stays on the device; verify the current listing and permissions before installing |
| Enhancer for YouTube | A broad mix of player modes and page controls | Wide Player beyond default Theater mode, full-window viewing without browser full screen, Mini Player and Pop-up Player; custom shortcuts | Can hide recommendations, related videos, chat, comments, end screens and info cards | Available through Chrome/Chromium and Firefox artifacts; Mozilla previously included it in Firefox’s Recommended Extensions program |
| Improve YouTube! | Fine-grained customization of the player and surrounding page | Theater/cinema mode, player resizing, full-window expansion, custom mini and pop-up players, extra player buttons, fixed quality and keyboard shortcuts | Options to hide comments, the header and chat, plus many playback controls | Its listing says it has been independently developed since 2012 and is not affiliated with YouTube; those are publisher statements, not independent audits |
| BigTube | A focused full-size theater view with a scrolling miniplayer | Full-sized theater mode, miniplayer on scroll and pop-out player support | Primarily a layout utility rather than an all-in-one cleanup suite | Listing describes support for newer YouTube grid layouts and a Manifest V3 migration; check current browser-store metadata |
Feature availability can change as YouTube changes its markup and player. Treat store descriptions as the current publisher claims, not as independent performance tests.
Theater Mode for YouTube: the simplest automatic solution
Choose this extension when your only requirement is: “Make YouTube open in Theater mode every time.” Its Chrome Web Store listing says it enables YouTube’s authentic Theater mode by default, including for viewers who are not logged in, and reapplies the mode on later visits.
What it does well
- It targets YouTube’s own Theater mode instead of replacing the player with a separate interface.
- It is designed around one behavior, so there are no width sliders, cleanup menus or playback systems to reconcile.
- It supports the player’s
Tshortcut.
What it does not do
The listing offers no configurable options. You cannot use it to set an exact percentage width, hide individual page components or create a custom pop-up player. If those controls matter, use one of the broader extensions instead.

Best fit
Install it on a browser profile used mainly for YouTube when you want a reliable default and do not want to maintain a large preference set. Because it changes one behavior, it is also a sensible first extension to try when diagnosing layout conflicts.
Magic Actions for YouTube: exact width, aspect ratio and page cleanup
Magic Actions is the strongest cited choice when “wide” is not precise enough. Its listing describes Auto Wide Player, theater-width percentages, a custom aspect ratio and Full-Window mode. Those controls let you decide whether the player should fill a defined share of the page, follow a preferred shape or expand within the browser window without invoking the browser’s own full-screen command.
Player controls
- Auto Wide Player: automatically uses a wider presentation than the standard player.
- Theater-width percentages: choose a defined width rather than accepting a single preset.
- Custom aspect ratio: useful when a fixed shape matters more than the default responsive proportions.
- Full-Window mode: expands the player to the browser window without the browser full-screen API.
Independent cleanup switches
The listing describes separate controls for comments, related recommendations, end screens, annotations, Shorts shelves, community posts, live chat and the guide sidebar. Independent switches are valuable when you want, for example, to keep comments but remove recommendations, or keep the guide but hide end-screen overlays.
Privacy and account claims
The publisher says settings are stored locally, no account is required and processing stays on the device. These are publisher claims rather than an independent audit. Before installing, inspect the current store entry, requested permissions and privacy policy; a future release can change any of those details.

- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
Best fit
Use Magic Actions when exact geometry is the deciding factor or when you want separate switches for most of YouTube’s distracting page elements. Its larger feature set also means more opportunities for a setting to overlap with another extension.
Enhancer for YouTube: broad player and page controls
Enhancer covers the middle ground between a one-purpose Theater-mode switch and a full customization laboratory. It offers a Wide Player that goes beyond YouTube’s default Theater mode, full-window viewing without browser full screen, a Mini Player, a Pop-up Player and custom keyboard shortcuts.
Controls for the video and surrounding page
- Wide Player: enlarges the player beyond the standard Theater presentation.
- Full-window viewing: uses the browser window while leaving browser chrome and the full-screen API out of the equation.
- Mini Player and Pop-up Player: let you continue playback while navigating elsewhere.
- Page hiding: removes recommendations, related videos, chat, comments, end screens and info cards when those elements interfere with viewing.
Scrolling and reading features
Mozilla previously highlighted Enhancer’s ability to pin the player while scrolling, expand descriptions and reorder comments. Mozilla also identified it as part of Firefox’s Recommended Extensions program at that time. Recommendation status and individual features can change, so check the current Firefox Add-ons or Chromium-store listing before relying on a particular control.
Best fit
Choose Enhancer when you want a coherent set of common viewing modes rather than exact percentage geometry. It is especially useful for people who alternate between watching, reading long descriptions and browsing comments.

Improve YouTube! is aimed at viewers who want to modify many parts of YouTube’s interface. Its listing includes theater or cinema mode, player resizing, full-window expansion, custom mini and pop-up players, optional extra player buttons, fixed quality, custom keyboard shortcuts and numerous playback controls.
Interface controls
- Resize the player or expand it to a full-window view.
- Create custom mini and pop-up player behavior.
- Add optional buttons to the player when a control is not visible in YouTube’s default interface.
- Hide comments, the header or chat when you want a less crowded page.
Playback controls
Fixed-quality settings and keyboard shortcuts can reduce repetitive adjustments, while the additional playback controls let you tailor how the player behaves. The exact labels and availability can vary by browser release and extension version.
Publisher disclosures
The listing says the project has been independently developed since 2012 and is not affiliated with YouTube. Those statements describe the publisher’s position; they are not an independent security or ownership audit.

Best fit
Use Improve YouTube! if you are willing to spend time configuring a large preference set and want control over both layout and playback. It is less suitable when you want one switch and no maintenance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBigTube: a focused theater view with a scrolling miniplayer
BigTube concentrates on the watch-and-scroll experience. Its listing describes a full-sized theater mode, a miniplayer that appears while you scroll so playback continues as you read comments, pop-out player support, compatibility work for newer YouTube grid layouts and a move to Manifest V3.
Why its focus matters
BigTube is not presented as an all-in-one settings suite. That narrower scope can be an advantage if your main requirement is a large player that remains available while you move down the page. It is not the first choice for extensive hiding rules covering every recommendation, shelf and overlay.
Best fit
Choose BigTube when scrolling miniplayer behavior is more important than dozens of independent toggles. Because YouTube’s grid and player layouts change, confirm that the current store version supports the layout you use.
Which extension should you choose?
| Your priority | Most suitable starting point | Why | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Always open authentic Theater mode | Theater Mode for YouTube | Single-purpose automatic behavior with no configuration burden | No exact sizing or cleanup controls |
| Set a precise width or aspect ratio | Magic Actions for YouTube | Width percentages and custom aspect-ratio controls are explicitly listed | More settings increase the chance of overlap with another extension |
| Hide recommendations, comments, chat and overlays | Enhancer for YouTube | Broad hiding controls plus Wide, Mini and Pop-up Player modes | Feature availability must be checked against the current browser listing |
| Customize nearly every part of the page and player | Improve YouTube! | Combines resizing, custom players, extra buttons, fixed quality and shortcuts | Requires more setup and ongoing preference maintenance |
| Keep a large player while scrolling | BigTube | Focused scrolling miniplayer and full-sized theater presentation | Not positioned as a comprehensive page-cleanup suite |
Do not install several extensions simply because each has one attractive feature. Pick the smallest set that covers your actual workflow. A single broad suite is usually easier to reason about than multiple tools that all attempt to resize or relocate the same player.

How to install and verify an extension safely
- Use an official distribution channel. Open the official Chrome Web Store, Firefox Add-ons site or the project’s official release page. Avoid reposted installers and download mirrors.
- Check the identity. Compare the extension name, publisher, icon, description and update date with the project you intend to install. Similar names can belong to unrelated software.
- Read permissions before selecting Add. A layout extension may need access to YouTube pages to modify the player. Make sure the requested access matches that purpose and be cautious about permissions that are broader than your use case.
- Read the privacy policy. If the publisher makes a local-processing or no-account claim, verify how that claim is described in the current listing and policy rather than assuming it applies to every version.
- Install one layout tool first. Open a normal video, a live stream and a page with comments. Test Theater mode, scrolling and returning to a later video before adding another extension.
- Record your working settings. If the extension provides an export or backup function, use it before making extensive changes. Keep the original settings available so you can restore a known-good configuration.
- Test in a separate browser profile when possible. A clean profile helps determine whether a problem belongs to the extension, another add-on or YouTube’s own interface.
Configuration patterns that avoid conflicts
Choose one extension as the authority for player size
Do not enable automatic Theater mode in one extension, Auto Wide Player in a second and full-window maximization in a third. They can repeatedly rewrite the same player dimensions, causing flicker, incorrect margins or a player that snaps back after navigation. Select one authority for width and disable equivalent controls elsewhere.
Separate layout from cleanup when the suite allows it
Keep the player-size control enabled in one place. Then enable only the hiding rules you actually need: for example, comments and live chat, or recommendations and end screens. Every additional rule is another point that can break when YouTube changes a page component.

Be deliberate with pop-up and miniplayer modes
Pop-up, Mini Player and scrolling-miniplayer features can all respond to navigation or scroll events. Use one of them as your default and turn off competing automatic behaviors. Manual activation is preferable if you only need the mode occasionally.
Review keyboard shortcuts
Extensions can add shortcuts that overlap with YouTube’s own keys or with browser commands. Keep the shortcuts you use, remove redundant bindings and note that the T key is already associated with YouTube’s Theater mode.
Troubleshooting a broken or unstable YouTube player
The player keeps changing size
- Open the extension settings and disable all automatic width, Theater, full-window and maximize features except the one you want.
- Temporarily disable every other YouTube layout extension from the browser’s extensions manager.
- Reload a video and test navigation. If the problem disappears, re-enable extensions one at a time until the conflicting rule is identified.
- Restore your saved settings or remove the extension if the conflict returns after an update.
Theater mode does not persist
Check that the extension is enabled for the YouTube site, that its automatic Theater option is turned on and that another extension is not forcing a different mode. Test while signed out if the tool claims to support signed-out use; this distinguishes account state from extension behavior.
Comments, recommendations or chat reappear
YouTube can load these sections dynamically after the initial page. Confirm that the relevant hide switch is enabled, then navigate to another video and back. If the behavior changes after a YouTube redesign or extension update, check the store listing for a compatibility release before adding another cleanup tool.
Pop-up or miniplayer fails after a browser update
Verify that the extension supports your browser’s current release and that it has not been disabled after an update. BigTube’s listing, for example, specifically discusses newer YouTube grid layouts and Manifest V3 migration; similar compatibility notes may appear in other projects’ release histories.
The browser becomes slow or the page flickers
Disable automatic processing features one at a time, beginning with custom CSS, repeated player resizing and multiple page-hiding suites. If performance returns to normal, keep the smallest set of rules that solves your problem and remove redundant extensions.

Browser compatibility and maintenance
Chrome-targeted extensions generally use Chromium-compatible APIs, so the same package may work in Microsoft Edge and other Chromium browsers such as Opera and Vivaldi. Compatibility should still be checked in the current store listing and against your browser version; “Chromium-based” does not guarantee identical behavior.

The YouTube-Enhancer project publishes Chrome, Chromium, Edge and Firefox artifacts. Its version 1.34.0 release, dated August 20, 2026, documents fixes for conflicts between automatic Theater mode and automatic player maximization, along with compatibility work for YouTube layout changes. That release history illustrates why maintenance matters: an extension can work perfectly until YouTube changes its page structure.
Firefox users should prefer the Firefox Add-ons listing or the project’s official Firefox release over an unofficial port. Store update dates, release notes and permission changes are more useful indicators than a feature list copied from an old article.
Privacy, permissions and rollback checklist
- Install from a first-party channel: use the official browser store or the project’s official release page.
- Match permissions to function: a tool that changes YouTube pages needs site access, but you should understand whether access is limited to YouTube or extends to other sites.
- Prefer local settings when that is important to you: Magic Actions’ publisher states that settings and processing remain local; verify this in the current policy.
- Do not treat a privacy claim as an audit: statements about local processing, independence or affiliation come from the publisher unless an independent source verifies them.
- Keep a rollback path: export settings where supported, know how to disable the extension in the browser’s extension manager and remove it if the player becomes unstable.
- Review updates periodically: YouTube layout changes can require a compatibility fix, but an update can also add permissions or change defaults.

Exact monitor-dependent sizing
Use Magic Actions for YouTube, set the theater width or aspect ratio that fits your browser window and avoid enabling a second extension’s automatic maximization. Recheck the setting after changing monitor orientation or browser zoom.
Watching while reading or browsing
Use Enhancer’s pinning or Mini/Pop-up Player features, or BigTube’s scrolling miniplayer. Choose one scrolling behavior; two simultaneous miniplayer systems can compete for the same navigation events.
Bottom line
YouTube’s native Theater mode and Miniplayer remain the lowest-risk choices. Add Theater Mode for YouTube for automatic authentic Theater mode with no configuration. Pick Magic Actions for YouTube when exact width or aspect-ratio control is central. Choose Enhancer for YouTube or Improve YouTube! for broader player and page customization, and BigTube for a focused full-size theater view with scrolling miniplayer behavior.
