How to choose a broiler pan that is safe for your oven
Measure the oven cavity
Measure the usable width and depth of the rack or shelf where the pan will sit, and account for any handles or rack edges that affect clearance. Compare those measurements with the product’s outside dimensions, not only its cooking surface. The Nordic Ware Classic’s 12.8 × 8.4-inch figure is an interior measurement; USA Pan lists separate rack and base dimensions. A set can be too large even when its cooking area looks suitable.
Check the temperature rating against the whole set
Read the oven’s broil-mode instructions and compare its maximum temperature with the ratings for both pan and rack. Follow the lower-rated component: the Nordic Ware Compact, for example, is rated to 425°F, while the Classic is rated to 500°F and USA Pan Goldtouch to 550°F. Do not assume that every broiler cycle stays below a product’s limit.

Choose a surface and cleanup routine
Uncoated aluminum avoids a nonstick coating, but Nordic Ware recommends hand washing its natural aluminum pan and discourages dishwasher use because detergent can discolor it. The Compact includes a nonstick carbon-steel rack, so follow the maker’s care and utensil directions for coated surfaces. Broiler pan safety and care
- Check that the pan and rack both fit with adequate clearance inside the oven.
- Respect the lowest temperature rating among the pan and rack, and follow the oven’s broil-mode instructions.
- Nordic Ware’s instructions say, “Always use proper ventilation when broiling,” and advise never leaving broiling food unattended. Nordic Ware use and care instructions.
- Follow the care directions for the exact set. Do not infer dishwasher safety from the fact that a product is metal.
- For a coated rack, use the maker’s utensil guidance to avoid damaging the surface.
