Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe best crash pad depends on the landing, the approach and the pads you can bring—not on a single overall ranking. For broad coverage, consider a large pad such as the Metolius Magnum or Black Diamond Mondo; for a long walk in, a lighter medium pad such as the Black Diamond Erratic may be a better fit; and a compact pad can work as a starter or supplemental layer. Compare footprint, thickness, foam, hinge design and carry comfort, then plan how the pad will sit on the actual landing. No pad removes the risk of injury.
How to choose a crash pad for outdoor bouldering
Start with the landing zone and approach, then compare the pad’s construction. A bigger footprint may cover more ground but can add weight or come with less thickness. A light, compact model may be easier to carry yet provide less coverage or cushioning. Match the tradeoffs to the boulder and the way you climb rather than assuming one model is right for everyone.

- Landing coverage: Check the open pad’s dimensions against the area that needs covering, including where a climber could move or fall.
- Thickness and foam: Consider the pad’s structure as well as its footprint. A wide landing zone is not necessarily a thick or highly cushioned one.
- Hinge and fold: The fold affects how a pad sits on uneven ground and how its landing surface behaves at the seam.
- Carry system and weight: A large pad can be useful at the boulder but burdensome on a long approach. Fit and carry comfort matter if you must haul it far.
- Terrain and pad role: Think about rocks, slopes and gaps under the landing, and whether this will be your main pad or an additional one.
Crash pads worth considering by use case
These are use-case examples drawn from published reviews, not universal rankings or firsthand testing for this article. OutdoorGearLab reports testing 14 pads side by side and names its own editorial picks; those awards reflect that review’s judgments, not a guarantee that a model is best for every climber. OutdoorGearLab’s crash-pad comparison was updated October 13, 2025.
| Use case | Model | Reported tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Large landing zone | Metolius Magnum | Climbing.com describes a large footprint with relatively thin pad structure, a coverage-versus-cushioning tradeoff. OutdoorGearLab names it its large-pad pick. |
| Large coverage with substantial foam | Black Diamond Mondo | Climbing.com describes substantial coverage and foam, with more weight and a relatively minimalist carry system that may be less appealing on long approaches. |
| Long approaches | Black Diamond Erratic | Climbing.com describes a lighter, medium-size pad with a carry system and stiff landing surface suited to larger falls; that stiffness may make it less adaptable to variable landings. |
| Starter or supplemental pad | Metolius Session II | Climbing.com characterizes it as light and lower-price, while cautioning that it may not suit falls from greater heights. |
| OutdoorGearLab’s overall editorial pick | Organic 5-inch Thick Big Pad | OutdoorGearLab’s review designation; it is not a universal safety or performance ranking. |
| OutdoorGearLab’s value editorial pick | Organic Simple | OutdoorGearLab’s review designation; current prices and availability are not established here. |
| OutdoorGearLab’s feature-rich editorial pick | Mad Rock Duo | OutdoorGearLab’s review designation; consider its construction and fit for your landing rather than relying on the label alone. |

How hinge design and terrain affect pad placement
A pad’s fold is more than a packing detail. OutdoorGearLab notes that tri-fold models such as the Metolius Magnum and Black Diamond Circuit Z can be folded over larger rocks. The review also notes that some hybrid-hinge pads use a continuous top foam layer, which is intended to help prevent bottoming through the seam. These are design considerations, not guarantees about how a landing will feel or whether it will be safe.
On irregular ground, look for rocks, depressions, slopes and gaps that could affect where the pad rests. Coverage is useful only if the pad can be positioned to cover the landing area and sit appropriately on that terrain. If you have more than one pad, consider how they overlap and whether seams or gaps fall within the expected landing zone. A pad cannot make a hazardous fall safe by itself.

Choose a primary pad or a supplemental pad
For a primary pad
Prioritize suitable coverage and construction for the expected landing, then make sure the weight and carry system are realistic for the approach. A large pad can bring more ground coverage, but the Magnum’s reported thinner structure and the Mondo’s reported weight illustrate why footprint alone should not decide the purchase.
For a supplemental pad
A lighter or more compact model may be easier to carry alongside another pad or on a longer walk. The Session II is one example Climbing.com describes as a starter or supplemental option. Treat that role as a tradeoff: a smaller or lighter pad should not be assumed to provide the coverage or structure needed for every fall.

What to check before buying
- Confirm the open dimensions, thickness, foam construction and fold arrangement for the exact model and version being sold.
- Assess whether its landing surface and hinge make sense for the terrain you expect, rather than relying on a general award or category label.
- Try or carefully assess the carry system with the load and approach you expect; a pad’s landing benefits do not help if its weight makes the approach impractical.
- Check current regional availability and price with the retailer or manufacturer. The comparisons cited here do not establish current stock or a price valid at publication.
