Short answer: a Bluetooth keyboard is the most consistently documented choice for coding with Samsung DeX. Samsung supports pairing one through the Galaxy device’s Bluetooth settings. A USB-C HDMI hub is optional: it is useful when you want a wired monitor plus USB accessories, but it is not a universal DeX requirement. Your exact Galaxy model, DeX mode, monitor and hub determine whether a wired setup works; a supported wireless display can eliminate the display hub entirely.
What to buy first
Start with the input device, not the hub. Samsung’s DeX instructions explicitly cover Bluetooth keyboards and mice, and the pairing process uses the Galaxy phone or tablet’s normal Bluetooth settings. That makes a Bluetooth keyboard the clearest category recommendation for a coding workspace. See Samsung’s current setup instructions in Use the Samsung DeX screen on your Galaxy phone or tablet and the technical overview in How Samsung DeX works.

Buy a USB-C HDMI hub only if your desk plan calls for a wired external display and more than one wired peripheral. Samsung documents DeX through a DeX cable or USB-C-to-HDMI adapter, but that documentation is not a certification of every third-party multiport hub. A wireless DeX display, where supported by both the Galaxy device and display, can remove the need for a display hub. Samsung describes the current wireless and Bluetooth-input workflow in its Galaxy S26 DeX setup overview.

There is no single universally compatible third-party hub established by Samsung’s general guidance, and the available documentation does not rank a particular keyboard as “best for coding.” Keyboard feel, key travel and shortcut behavior require product-specific evaluation. The practical recommendation is therefore category-based: choose a Bluetooth keyboard by layout, app shortcuts, battery and device-switching needs; choose a hub only after checking your exact Galaxy model and intended monitor connection.

How Samsung DeX connects your coding workspace
DeX separates the display connection from the input devices. You can connect a monitor by cable, use a supported wireless display, and pair a keyboard independently over Bluetooth. That means a wireless monitor does not force you to use a wireless keyboard, and a wired monitor does not force you to use a USB keyboard.
Bluetooth keyboard path
Pair the keyboard in Settings > Connections > Bluetooth (the exact wording can vary by One UI version), select the keyboard, and complete any pairing-code prompt. After pairing, open DeX and test typing in the coding application you plan to use. Samsung lists Bluetooth alongside USB and RF keyboard and mouse options in its DeX support material.
Wired display path
For a wired monitor, Samsung documents either a DeX cable or a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter. A multiport hub can combine HDMI output, USB ports and charging, but the phone or tablet must support the intended wired DeX mode and the hub must expose the right display and USB behavior. USB-A accessories connected to a USB-C device may need an OTG adapter.

Wireless display path
Wireless DeX is limited to supported Galaxy devices and compatible displays. Samsung’s guidance refers to Miracast-capable displays and provides model-specific qualifications. Check the current compatibility information before purchasing a monitor solely for wireless DeX; support lists can change as devices and software are updated. Samsung’s current tablet and wireless workspace information is in Manage workspaces in Samsung DeX mode.
Choosing a Bluetooth keyboard for coding
A Bluetooth keyboard is usually the simplest DeX input because it avoids occupying a hub port and remains useful when you change displays. The “best” layout depends on the editor, terminal or remote-development app you use, so evaluate the following characteristics rather than relying on a model ranking.

1. Match the physical layout to your code
Full-size boards provide a dedicated number pad and generally keep navigation keys separated, which helps if you enter numeric data or use extensive cursor movement. Tenkeyless layouts remove the number pad to save desk space while retaining function and navigation rows. Compact layouts are easier to carry but may layer arrows, Home/End, Insert/Delete or function keys behind an Fn modifier. Those layers matter when your editor uses multi-key shortcuts.
- Function row: confirm that F1–F12 are directly available or that the keyboard’s Fn mode behaves predictably.
- Navigation cluster: check for dedicated arrows, Home, End, Page Up and Page Down if you work in long files or terminal output.
- Modifier placement: compare Ctrl, Alt/Option, Windows/Command and Fn positions with the shortcuts documented by your coding app.
- US versus regional legends: choose the physical and printed layout that matches the language and symbols you type most often; punctuation positions differ between layouts.
2. Verify shortcut behavior in the actual DeX app
Android, DeX and an individual coding app can interpret the same key combination differently. Test the shortcuts you use daily—copy and paste, multi-cursor editing, search, terminal interrupt, tab switching, code completion and emulator controls—inside the exact app or remote session. Do not assume that a desktop shortcut is implemented identically in every Android editor, browser-based IDE or remote-desktop client.
3. Decide how much portability you need
A compact keyboard fits beside a tablet or in a travel bag. A wider board is steadier for long sessions and leaves room for dedicated navigation keys. If your desk is permanent, prioritize spacing and wrist position; if you move between a phone, tablet and monitor, weight, folded dimensions and a protective case become more important.
4. Plan charging and battery management
Bluetooth boards may use replaceable batteries, a rechargeable internal cell or a USB charging connection. Check whether the keyboard can type while charging and whether its charging connector matches the cables already at your desk. Keep a charging cable accessible: a keyboard with a depleted battery can interrupt a coding session even when the phone and monitor are ready.
5. Consider multi-device switching
If one keyboard will serve a Galaxy device, a laptop and a tablet, look for explicit multi-device pairing and a clear switching control. Pair each device before you rely on the feature, then test switching while DeX is running. A keyboard that only remembers one host may be perfectly adequate for a dedicated DeX desk but inconvenient for a shared workspace.

6. Check Android-specific keys and remapping options
Some keyboards include keys intended for desktop operating systems. Their labels do not guarantee an Android action. Confirm what the keyboard sends and whether your DeX version or coding app lets you remap it. Treat backlight controls, media keys and programmable layers as conveniences, not evidence of DeX compatibility.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBluetooth keyboard versus USB keyboard through a hub
Both approaches can work, but they solve different problems. Samsung’s documentation supports Bluetooth pairing directly and describes USB peripheral connection through supported ports. It also notes that wired keyboard and mouse devices do not work through its DeX cable path, so do not assume that plugging a USB keyboard into any cable will make it available in DeX. A USB keyboard should be connected through a supported adapter or hub path for the specific device.
| Decision factor | Bluetooth keyboard | USB keyboard via adapter or hub |
|---|---|---|
| Connection | Pairs in the Galaxy device’s Bluetooth settings. | Uses a USB port on a compatible adapter or hub; USB-A equipment may require OTG adaptation. |
| Hub required | No keyboard hub port required. | Usually yes when the Galaxy device has only USB-C and the keyboard uses USB-A; a direct USB-C keyboard may avoid a hub. |
| Power | Runs on batteries or an internal rechargeable cell. | Normally draws power from the Galaxy device or hub; a powered hub may change the behavior. |
| Desk flexibility | Works across wired and supported wireless display arrangements. | Useful when you already have a wired desk hub and want a fixed connection. |
| What to verify | Pairing, shortcut behavior and battery life for your apps. | Exact Galaxy USB support, hub port mode, OTG behavior and whether the chosen DeX cable path supports the peripheral. |
When a USB-C HDMI hub is the right accessory
A hub is most useful when one USB-C connection must carry a monitor, power and several peripherals. A typical desk might use HDMI for the monitor, USB-A for a keyboard or mouse, and USB-C power passthrough to keep the Galaxy device charged. That convenience is conditional, not a universal DeX requirement.
Use a hub for a wired, multi-peripheral desk
Choose this route when you want a predictable cable to a monitor, a wired keyboard or mouse, external storage or another USB accessory, and charging through the same connection. Before buying, confirm that the Galaxy phone or tablet supports wired DeX and that the hub’s display output is compatible with the monitor input you intend to use.
Skip the hub when wireless DeX meets your needs
If your Galaxy model and display support Samsung’s wireless DeX mode, the monitor connection can be wireless and the keyboard can remain Bluetooth. You may still want a small adapter for charging or occasional USB devices, but the display does not require an HDMI hub in that arrangement.

Do not treat “USB-C” as a compatibility guarantee
USB-C describes the connector, not the functions exposed by a particular phone, tablet, cable or hub. Video output, USB data, charging passthrough and OTG support can differ. Samsung’s adapter guidance establishes connection categories; it does not certify every third-party multiport product. Compatibility must be checked against the exact Galaxy model, software and hub specification.
USB-C hub buying checklist
Use this checklist before ordering a hub. If a specification is not stated by the manufacturer, treat it as unknown rather than assuming the port will work in DeX.
- Galaxy model and software: identify the exact phone or tablet model and confirm current wired DeX support in Samsung’s support information.
- Display connector: choose HDMI, DisplayPort or another output only when it matches both the hub and monitor. If the monitor has multiple inputs, select the one you will actually use.
- Resolution and refresh requirements: verify that the hub advertises the resolution and refresh rate your monitor needs. Samsung’s general DeX pages do not establish one universal third-party hub limit.
- USB port type and count: count the peripherals you will connect. USB-A ports suit many existing keyboards and mice; USB-C data ports may be needed for newer accessories.
- Power passthrough: check the hub’s charging input, supported power behavior and whether the Galaxy device can charge while the display and USB devices are active.
- OTG and data mode: confirm that the hub supports USB host operation with your Galaxy device, especially when using USB-A accessories.
- Physical design: compare cable length, strain relief, heat dissipation and portability. A short captive cable may be tidy on a desk but awkward with a tablet stand.
- Return and support terms: use a seller with a practical return path because model-specific compatibility may not be apparent until the complete setup is connected.
Wired versus wireless DeX for a coding monitor
| Setup | Accessories typically needed | Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wired monitor with DeX cable | Supported DeX cable and monitor; separate input device or supported peripheral path. | Simple single-display cable arrangement. | Samsung notes that wired keyboard and mouse devices do not work through its DeX cable path; additional USB connectivity may be needed. |
| Wired monitor with USB-C HDMI adapter | Compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter, monitor and optional USB peripherals. | Direct display connection with fewer hub features. | May leave no convenient USB port or charging passthrough. |
| Wired monitor with multiport hub | Compatible hub with display output, USB ports and optional power input. | Combines monitor, peripherals and charging at one desk connection. | Every function depends on the exact Galaxy model and hub; third-party compatibility is not universally certified. |
| Supported wireless monitor | Compatible Galaxy device and Miracast-capable or otherwise supported display; Bluetooth keyboard if desired. | Less cabling and no display hub required. | Only supported device/display combinations work; verify current Samsung compatibility information. |
Recommended DeX workspace configurations
Minimal portable setup
Use a Bluetooth keyboard and a supported wireless display when available. This avoids carrying a display adapter and keeps the keyboard independent of the monitor connection. It is appropriate for hotel rooms, meeting spaces and temporary coding sessions where a compatible display is already present.
Permanent wired desk
Use a monitor, a verified USB-C HDMI hub with power passthrough, and a Bluetooth keyboard. This combination keeps the keyboard free from USB-port conflicts while the hub handles display, charging and any occasional wired accessory. If you prefer a wired keyboard, verify the hub’s USB host behavior and avoid relying on the DeX cable path that Samsung excludes for wired keyboard and mouse devices.

Tablet-first workspace
A compatible Galaxy Tab can provide a larger built-in screen, and Samsung documents tablet-based DeX options. A keyboard cover or dock may be relevant if you already own the supported tablet, but neither is necessary for every phone-based setup. Confirm the tablet model and current software support before buying an accessory designed for a different generation.

Phone plus external monitor
For a phone-based setup, decide first whether the display will be wired or wireless. With wired output, select the appropriate DeX cable or USB-C video adapter, then add a hub only if you need more USB ports or charging passthrough. With wireless output, pair the keyboard separately and test the display before committing to a permanent arrangement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Step-by-step: pair a Bluetooth keyboard
- Charge the keyboard or install its batteries, then switch it on and enter pairing mode according to its instructions.
- On the Galaxy phone or tablet, open Settings > Connections > Bluetooth.
- Enable Bluetooth and select the keyboard from the available-device list.
- Enter the displayed pairing code if prompted, then wait for the status to show as connected.
- Launch DeX, open the coding app or terminal, and type a short test line.
- Test the shortcuts you use most, including the editor’s save, search, navigation and terminal commands.
- If you plan to switch between devices, pair the other hosts now and confirm that the keyboard’s switching control returns to the Galaxy device reliably.
Step-by-step: build a wired monitor setup
- Confirm in Samsung’s current support information that your exact Galaxy model supports the wired DeX mode you intend to use.
- Check the monitor’s available input and required resolution, then choose a DeX cable, USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or hub with a matching output.
- If you need USB-A peripherals, verify the hub has USB-A data ports or obtain an OTG-compatible adapter for the Galaxy USB-C port.
- If charging is required, connect the Galaxy-approved or manufacturer-specified power source to the hub’s power input and confirm its passthrough rating.
- Connect the monitor to the hub, connect the hub to the Galaxy device, and select the monitor’s correct input.
- Allow DeX to start, then connect the Bluetooth keyboard through the Galaxy Bluetooth settings. Add USB peripherals only after the display is stable.
- Open the coding application and test typing, pointer input, display resolution and charging simultaneously. A setup that works with only the monitor attached may fail when all ports are populated.
Step-by-step: use a supported wireless display
- Verify that both the Galaxy model and the display support Samsung’s wireless DeX requirements.
- Place the Galaxy device and display on the same local network when the display’s instructions require it, and enable the display’s wireless-screen or Miracast mode.
- Open the DeX or screen-sharing control on the Galaxy device and select the compatible display.
- Accept the connection on the display if prompted and wait for the DeX desktop to appear.
- Pair the Bluetooth keyboard separately and test the coding app. Wireless video does not automatically provide keyboard input.
Common problems and fixes
The keyboard pairs but does not type in DeX
- Confirm that Bluetooth shows the keyboard as connected, not merely remembered.
- Turn the keyboard off and on, then reconnect it before opening the coding app.
- Test in a basic text field. If it works there but not in the editor, inspect that app’s keyboard-shortcut or input settings.
- Check the selected physical keyboard layout in the Galaxy language and input settings if punctuation appears in the wrong places.
The hub shows no picture
- Recheck that the Galaxy model supports the intended wired DeX mode; USB-C alone does not prove video output.
- Select the monitor’s correct HDMI or DisplayPort input and test with a known-good display cable.
- Disconnect USB accessories and power, connect only the display path, and add devices one at a time.
- Confirm that the hub’s output matches the monitor and that its advertised resolution is suitable for the display.
The monitor works, but USB devices do not
- Check whether the hub’s ports are data ports rather than charging-only ports.
- Verify OTG or USB-host support for the Galaxy model and the adapter.
- Try the keyboard through Bluetooth to isolate a hub or USB-path problem.
- Remember Samsung’s qualification that wired keyboard and mouse devices do not work through its DeX cable path; use a supported adapter or hub path instead.
The setup disconnects under load
- Connect the hub’s power input if the design supports passthrough and use the required charger.
- Reduce the number of attached USB devices and test whether one accessory is drawing excessive power.
- Inspect the captive USB-C cable for a loose connection and avoid placing sideways force on the phone or tablet port.
- Update the Galaxy software and hub firmware when the manufacturers provide an applicable update, then retest the complete setup.
Wireless DeX is unavailable
- Confirm that the Galaxy device and display are on Samsung’s supported lists; wireless DeX is not available on every combination.
- Enable the display’s compatible wireless-screen mode and follow its on-screen acceptance prompt.
- Use a wired DeX connection if the display lacks the required wireless capability or the model is not supported.
How to make the setup comfortable for long coding sessions
Once connectivity works, the keyboard’s physical design has more effect on productivity than the presence of a hub. Place the board so your wrists stay neutral, keep the monitor at a readable height and use the editor’s own shortcut reference rather than assuming desktop conventions. If a compact keyboard hides navigation keys behind Fn, document those combinations near the desk until they become familiar.
Keep one input method as a fallback. A Bluetooth keyboard can remain available when the hub is disconnected, while a wired keyboard can be useful for diagnosing Bluetooth pairing or battery problems. Do not buy both merely for redundancy if your workspace is portable; choose the backup that solves the failure you are most likely to encounter.
How to check compatibility before purchase
- Write down the exact Galaxy model number and current One UI or Android version.
- Choose wired or wireless display first; that decision determines whether an HDMI adapter or hub is needed.
- For wired DeX, read Samsung’s current model-specific support page and note any mode limitations.
- List every accessory you will connect: monitor, keyboard, mouse, storage, network adapter and charger.
- Match the hub’s stated display output, USB data ports, power input and physical cable to that list.
- Confirm the seller’s return policy and retain the packaging until the complete DeX setup passes typing, display, charging and peripheral tests.
Samsung’s official pages are the authoritative starting point because device support and software behavior can change. The technical background is documented at Samsung Developer, while the consumer setup and model qualifications are maintained in Samsung Support and Manage workspaces in Samsung DeX mode.
Bottom-line buying advice
For most DeX coding desks, buy a Bluetooth keyboard that has the layout, shortcut access, battery system and device switching you actually need. Add a USB-C HDMI hub only when a wired monitor and additional USB accessories justify it, and verify the exact Galaxy-and-hub combination before purchase. If a supported wireless display meets your requirements, it can remove the display hub from the setup while leaving the Bluetooth keyboard as a separate, dependable input device.
