For most gym users, the best all-round choice is Beats Powerbeats Pro 2: its ear hooks are designed to resist movement, and cited reviews report active noise cancellation (ANC), a heart-rate sensor and up to 10 hours of playback (eight with ANC). It is rated IPX4, however, so it is splash- and sweat-resistant rather than suitable for swimming. If maximum water protection matters more than ANC, consider JBL Endurance Peak 4; if you want the lowest-cost hook design, look at Skullcandy Push Active True Wireless.

This guide treats “headphones” broadly. Four of the five recommendations are in-ear true-wireless earbuds because they are lighter and easier to stabilize while lifting, running or doing intervals. Over-ear headphones can sound more enveloping, but their pads may become hot and damp during hard sessions. Rankings reflect the cited editorial reviews and manufacturer information, not a controlled test by this article’s author.

How to choose gym headphones that will not fall out

Sound quality is only one part of a workout decision. A model that sounds excellent but shifts during a deadlift or drops during a sprint is a poor gym headphone. Prioritize the mechanical fit, then check water protection, battery behavior, noise control and phone compatibility.

Start with stability, not the codec

Ear hooks wrap around the outside of the ear, while wings press into the concha and different tip sizes seal the ear canal. RTINGS says the Powerbeats Pro 2’s over-ear hooks improve stability, and WIRED reported that the hooks stayed in place during its testing. A secure seal also improves bass response and passive isolation, so you do not need to raise the volume as much.

Before a hard session, try every supplied tip size. The correct tip should seal without painful pressure; if the earbud rocks when you open your jaw or turn your head, change the size or choose a hook or wing design. Wipe tips and hooks after training so sweat does not make the surface slippery.

Match the design to your workout

  • Running, rowing and jumping: ear hooks or stabilizing wings are the safest starting point because repeated impact exposes a loose fit quickly.
  • Strength training: compact earbuds are easy to wear under a cap or around a bench. Strong passive isolation can help you focus, but keep enough awareness to hear people nearby.
  • Busy commercial gyms: effective ANC reduces music and machine noise. Transparency mode is useful when you need announcements or conversation.
  • Outdoor training and group classes: an ambient or open-ear approach can be safer around traffic, instructors and other athletes than maximum isolation.
  • Long sessions: compare claimed playback with ANC enabled, not only the larger number with ANC off.

Water ratings: what IPX4 and IP68 do—and do not—mean

Tom’s Guide explains an IPXY code as two protection digits: the first concerns dust and the second concerns water. An “X” means the cited rating does not state a dust-protection level. IPX4 indicates protection against splashes from any direction. It is a useful baseline for sweat and light splashing, but it is not a promise that seals will withstand every workout, heavy rain or years of exposure.

IP68 is a substantially higher stated water rating, and RTINGS reports that rating for JBL Endurance Peak 4. The code still does not make every use case automatically safe: manufacturer instructions, the test conditions and the condition of the charging contacts matter. Neither rating should be read as permission to swim with earbuds unless the manufacturer explicitly says so. Dry the earbuds and case before charging, and never put wet buds into a closed case.

Five strong Bluetooth picks for different gym priorities

The table separates the reason to consider each model from its documented limitation. Playback figures, ratings and observations below are attributed to the named 2026 guides or manufacturer positioning; they are not measurements made for this article.

Model Best fit for Stated features Important caveat
Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 Best all-round secure workout earbud Over-ear hooks, ANC, heart-rate sensor; up to 10 hours, or eight with ANC, according to WIRED IPX4 is splash resistance, not waterproofing; ANC reduces runtime
JBL Endurance Peak 4 Readers prioritizing the highest stated water rating Ear hooks; RTINGS reports IP68 RTINGS says ANC is much less effective than on the Beats pick and the default sound is strongly bass-forward
Skullcandy Push Active True Wireless Budget shoppers who want hooks Ear-hook design; RTINGS reports IP55 RTINGS notes a possible build concern where the hook meets the bud and no ANC
soundcore Sport X20 Workout-focused fit and sweat features Manufacturer-positioned sport earbuds with fit and sweat-protection features Those are manufacturer claims; the cited material does not establish an independent head-to-head result
Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen) Workout ANC and a comfortable, secure in-ear fit TechRadar reports IPX4 and about six hours of battery life Bulkier than some rivals and shorter-running than the Powerbeats figure

1. Beats Powerbeats Pro 2: the safest default for mixed workouts

Powerbeats Pro 2 is the most balanced recommendation when you alternate between treadmills, weights and circuits. Its over-ear hooks add a second point of contact, making the earbuds less dependent on canal friction. RTINGS and WIRED both identify the hook as a stability advantage, which directly addresses the common complaint that headphones fall out during exercise.

Soundcore V20i by Anker Open Ear Earbuds, Open Ear Headphones True Wireless | Adjustable Hooks, Ultra-Comfort, Snug Fit, Power Sound, Clear Calls, IP55, 36H Playtime, Bluetooth 5.4, Multipoint Connection
  • Ultra-Comfort with Open-Ear Design: Experience matchless comfort even for all-day wear with these non-intrusive, open-ear Bluetooth earbuds.
  • Enhanced Situational Awareness: V20i open-ear wireless earbuds let you stay connected to the world while enjoying pristine playback. Ideal for both urban life and outdoor ventures.
  • Four Adjustable Positions for a Secure, Comfy Fit: Easily rotate to find the sweet spot for your ears with these bluetooth earbuds, boosting stability and comfort. Listen and move freely with V20i open-ear earbuds throughout the day.
  • Powerful Sound with 16mm Drivers: Immerse in rich, resonant bass fueled by V20i's advanced 16mm drivers—featured in these wireless earbuds—with titanium-coated domes and soundcore's proprietary BassUp technology.
  • Clear Calls with 4 Mics and AI Enhancement: Equipped with four mics and an AI algorithm, V20i open-ear Bluetooth earbuds ensure crisp and clear calls wherever you are.

The feature set is unusually workout-specific. The cited reviews describe ANC and a heart-rate sensor, so you can choose between isolating gym noise and monitoring your surroundings. WIRED reports up to 10 hours of playback, or eight hours when ANC is enabled. Treat those as publisher-reported figures: actual runtime changes with volume, Bluetooth conditions, calls and sensor use.

The compromise is the IPX4 rating reported by RTINGS and WIRED. It covers splashes, not submersion, and does not establish swim or shower suitability. Wipe the hooks and charging contacts after training and let them dry before placing them in the case. Choose this model when secure fit and a broad feature set matter more than the highest water rating.

2. JBL Endurance Peak 4: the durability-led option

Endurance Peak 4 is the logical alternative for athletes who worry about sweat and water before they worry about sophisticated noise cancellation. RTINGS reports an IP68 rating and an ear-hook design. That combination gives it the strongest stated protection in this shortlist, although the rating should still be interpreted with the manufacturer’s care instructions rather than as a universal swimming guarantee.

RTINGS also reports two listening compromises: ANC is much less effective than on the Beats pick, and the default sound is strongly bass-forward. Bass can be enjoyable for electronic music or high-energy playlists, but listeners who prefer neutral vocals may need equalizer adjustment if the app provides it. The hooks make the model a natural candidate for running and high-impact classes.

Select this pair when water exposure is your primary risk. Select another model if quiet concentration in a loud gym is the deciding factor.

  • All-Day Fit & Wide Device Compatibility: Designed with adjustable ear hooks that follow ergonomic principles, these bluetooth earbuds adapt naturally to different ear shapes and sizes, ensuring they stay firmly in place during running, cycling, or intense workouts. The secure fit minimizes slippage and maximizes comfort, while universal Bluetooth compatibility allows these ear buds to seamlessly pair with smartphones, tablets, and laptops, providing a smooth audio experience across all devices.
  • Designed for Active Lifestyles & Portability: Compact charging case easily fits into your pocket or bag for travel and daily carry, reducing the risk of losing your earbuds. With a sweat-resistant and dust-resistant build, they are prepared to support your workouts, outdoor runs, or busy commutes without slowing you down. Durable, secure, and convenient, these bluetooth headphones are an excellent companion for people who need reliable audio that keeps pace with their active routine.

3. Skullcandy Push Active True Wireless: an affordable hook design

Push Active True Wireless gives budget-minded users the basic stability idea that makes sports earbuds practical: a hook around the ear rather than a small bud relying only on a silicone seal. RTINGS reports an IP55 rating, which indicates protection against dust and water jets at the stated test level. It is not interchangeable with IP68 and should not be treated as submersion protection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no ANC, so gym noise is reduced mainly by the physical seal. That can be an advantage for awareness, but it will not create the quiet bubble offered by a strong ANC model. RTINGS also raises a build concern at the connection between the hook and the bud. Inspect that joint periodically, especially if you remove the earbuds by pulling on the hook.

This is the sensible shortlist choice when a secure ear hook matters and you can accept simpler noise control and a documented construction caveat.

4. soundcore Sport X20: a fitness-first feature set

Sport X20 is positioned by its manufacturer as a workout earbud, with fit and sweat-protection features aimed at exercise. That makes it worth considering for people who want a sport-specific design rather than adapting ordinary daily earbuds to the gym.

The evidence supplied for this guide does not establish an independent comparative score against the other four models. Keep that distinction in mind when reading specifications or marketing language: a manufacturer’s claim describes intended design, while a review observation describes a reviewer’s experience under particular conditions. Confirm the exact IP rating, controls, tip options and phone-app compatibility for the version sold in your region before buying.

  • Comfortable fit: The ergonomic, stick-closed design of the JBL Vibe Beam fits so comfortably you may forget you're wearing them. The closed design excludes external sounds, enhancing the bass performance

  • Hands-free calls with VoiceAware: When you're making hands-free stereo calls on the go, VoiceAware lets you balance how much of your own voice you hear while talking with others
  • Water and dust resistant: From the beach to the bike trail, the IP54-certified earbuds and IPX2 charging case are water and dust resistant for all-day experiences

Choose Sport X20 when its stated fit system and controls match your routine. Do not choose it solely on a general “sweatproof” label without checking the model’s precise rating and care instructions.

5. Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen): the ANC-focused workout pick

TechRadar names the QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen) as a workout ANC pick and reports a secure, comfortable fit. This is the model to examine if your gym is dominated by loud fans, music and weight machines and you want active noise reduction without moving to an over-ear headset.

TechRadar reports IPX4 and about six hours of battery life. The earbuds are bulkier than some rivals, so comfort depends more on your ear shape and the supplied tips. Six hours may cover several ordinary sessions, but it leaves less margin for travel or a forgotten recharge than the higher cited figures for Powerbeats Pro 2.

Choose this pair for the comfort and ANC combination, provided the larger housing does not create pressure. If you train near traffic or need frequent conversation, use its awareness mode instead of maximum isolation.

Earbuds versus over-ear headphones in a gym

In-ear models dominate this list because they are compact, easier to secure with hooks or wings and less likely to collide with a bench or hood. They also expose the ear canal to sweat, and some people dislike the plugged feeling. Over-ear headphones can provide a more enveloping fit and sound isolation, but their pads trap heat and moisture during hard efforts. They are often better for stationary cycling or light lifting than for high-heat circuits.

Soundcore by Anker Q20i Hybrid Active Noise Cancelling Headphones, White | Over-Ear, Bluetooth, 40H ANC Playtime, Hi-Res Audio, Big Bass, Transparency Mode, Customize via App, Travel, Home, Office
  • Block the World, Keep the Music: Four built-in mics work together to filter out background noise — whether you're in a packed office, on a crowded commute, or moving through a busy street — so every beat comes through clean and clear. (Not available in AUX-in mode.)
  • Two Ways to Hear More: BassUp technology delivers deep, punchy bass and crisp highs in wireless mode — then step it up further by plugging in the included AUX cable to unlock Hi‑Res certified audio for studio-level clarity.
  • 40 Hours. 5-Minute Top-Up: With ANC on, a single charge keeps you listening through days of commutes and long-haul flights. Running low? Just 5 minutes plugged in gives you 4 more hours — so you're never stuck waiting.
  • Two Devices, Zero Hassle: Stay connected to your laptop and phone at the same time. Audio switches automatically to whichever device needs you — so a call never interrupts your flow, and getting back to your playlist is just as easy. Designed for commuters and remote workers who move smoothly between work and personal listening throughout the day.
  • Your Sound, Your Rules: The soundcore app puts everything at your fingertips — dials your ideal EQ with presets or build your own, flip between ANC, Normal, and Transparency modes on the fly, or wind down with built-in white noise. One app, total control.

If you prefer over-ear headphones, look for breathable, replaceable pads and a headband that does not slide when you look down. Do not assume a premium over-ear model is gym-safe: the water rating and care instructions matter more than price.

How to set up and wear workout earbuds

  1. Charge before the session. Check both earbuds and the case; a partially charged case can leave one side disconnected later.
  2. Install the phone app if required. Pair through the app or the phone’s Bluetooth menu according to the model instructions, then install available firmware updates before relying on the earbuds for a class.
  3. Try all tip sizes. Start with the smallest size that seals, then test a larger tip if the bud moves. A seal should block some room noise without pain.
  4. Lock the stabilizer in place. Rotate each earbud as directed and seat the hook behind the ear. Walk, nod and perform a body-weight squat before starting heavy or fast work.
  5. Select the right listening mode. Use ANC for concentration in a noisy room; use transparency or ambient mode when you need announcements, a training partner or environmental awareness.
  6. Set a safe volume. Raise volume only enough to overcome background noise. ANC can help you listen at a lower level, but it does not make loud playback harmless.
  7. Dry before storing. Remove visible sweat, leave the contacts and buds dry, then place them in the case. Charging wet equipment can accelerate corrosion or cause a connection failure.

Fixes for common gym-headphone problems

They keep falling out

Change tip size first, then reseat the earbud with a small twist. If movement continues during jumping or running, switch to a hook or wing model. A loose fit is not solved by turning up the volume.

One earbud is quieter after training

Check for moisture or debris at the mesh, let the earbud dry fully and clean it only as the manufacturer permits. Confirm the phone’s left-right balance and accessibility settings before assuming the driver has failed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Battery life is shorter than the headline number

Compare like with like: ANC, heart-rate sensing, high volume, calls and repeated reconnection all consume power. The cited Powerbeats figure falls from up to 10 hours to eight with ANC, while TechRadar reports about six hours for the Bose model. Treat both as guide-reported estimates, not guarantees for every session.

Controls trigger accidentally

Reposition the earbuds so the hook, not your fingers, bears the removal force. If the app allows control customization, disable gestures you activate while adjusting a cap or touching your ear.

Bluetooth drops in a crowded gym

Keep the phone on your body rather than on the far side of a metal machine, remove unused paired devices and update firmware. If only one earbud drops, place both in the case, close it, then reconnect according to the model’s reset procedure.

A practical decision guide

  • Choose Powerbeats Pro 2 for the best balance of hook stability, ANC, sensor features and the highest cited battery figure.
  • Choose Endurance Peak 4 when the reported IP68 rating is more important than ANC quality or a bass-heavy default sound.
  • Choose Push Active True Wireless when you want a budget hook design and can live without ANC and with the build caveat noted by RTINGS.
  • Choose Sport X20 when its manufacturer-stated fit and sweat features match your needs, after checking the exact regional specification.
  • Choose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen) when workout ANC and a secure, comfortable fit outweigh bulk and roughly six-hour battery life.

Check compatibility with your phone before purchase, especially if you rely on app-based equalizer, heart-rate or control features. Availability and pricing vary by country and date; the cited material does not establish a current universal price.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

For a single recommendation, start with Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 because its hooks address movement, its ANC suits noisy gyms and its cited playback is strong even though ANC reduces it. Choose JBL Endurance Peak 4 for the shortlist’s highest stated water rating, and choose a different model when your priority is lower cost, manufacturer-focused sport features or Bose’s workout ANC profile. Whatever you buy, fit the earbuds before the workout, use awareness mode when surroundings matter and treat every IP rating as a defined limit—not a guarantee against all sweat, rain or submersion.
